The word is “character.” One of Merriam-Webster’s definitions for this word is “the complex of mental and ethical traits marking and often individualizing a person, group, or nation.” Someone said, “Character is who you are when no one is watching.” Proverbs 21:3 tells us, “To do what is right and just is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.” This verse (like many others in Bible) captures the importance of good character, especially for those of us who claim Jesus’ name! I shared a quote about character from Billy Graham that stood out to me: The greatest legacy one can pass on to one's children and grandchildren is not money or other material things accumulated in one's life, but rather a legacy of character and faith. Billy Graham Most of us have no doubt that Billy Graham exhibits that kind of character and faith. But, what about us? Do we? As I said in the sermon, “God is more interested in our character than our comfort.” It’s more important to Him than the very best sacrifice we could ever offer Him. If it’s that important to God, then shouldn’t we do all we can to build the kind of character that is worth leaving to our children and grandchildren? One of the obstacles to having that kind of character is what I described as our “core sin.” The one that keeps showing up in our lives. Not sure what that might be for you? Here’s a way to identify it. Simply notice which of the Fruit of the Spirit is the weakest in your life. Is it love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness or self-control? The one that is the lacking is probably where your core sin will be found. Once you identify it, ask Jesus and others to help you deal with it. If you do, you are on your way to building the kind of character and faith that is worth leaving to others! Blessings,

WHO ARE YOU BECOMING?

I have another word for you this week that comes from yesterday’s sermon. The word is “character.” One of

Merriam-Webster’s definitions for this word is “the complex of mental and ethical traits marking and often

individualizing a person, group, or nation.” Someone said, “Character is who you are when no one is watching.”

Proverbs 21:3 tells us, “To do what is right and just is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.” This verse

(like many others in Bible) captures the importance of good character, especially for those of us who claim Jesus’

name!

I shared a quote about character from Billy Graham that stood out to me:

The greatest legacy one can pass on to one's children and grandchildren is not money or other

material things accumulated in one's life, but rather a legacy of character and faith.

Billy Graham

Most of us have no doubt that Billy Graham exhibits that kind of character and faith. But, what about us? Do we?

As I said in the sermon, “God is more interested in our character than our comfort.” It’s more important to Him

than the very best sacrifice we could ever offer Him. If it’s that important to God, then shouldn’t we do all we can

to build the kind of character that is worth leaving to our children and grandchildren?

One of the obstacles to having that kind of character is what I described as our “core sin.” The one that keeps

showing up in our lives. Not sure what that might be for you? Here’s a way to identify it. Simply notice which of

the Fruit of the Spirit is the weakest in your life. Is it love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

gentleness or self-control?

The one that is the lacking is probably where your core sin will be found. Once you identify it, ask Jesus and

others to help you deal with it. If you do, you are on your way to building the kind of character and faith that is

worth leaving to others!

Blessings,

Churches looking for new ideas, networking opportunities and practical, quality training for their pastors, parishioners, staff and leaders need look no further than this year’s Pathways leadership training event.

Scheduled for Saturday, August 26 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Warner Robins, the training event will offer participants more than 30 workshops to choose from, each designed to help congregations become healthier and to fulfill the mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ. The event will begin with a time of worship and gathering time around creativity in ministry.

The training, which starts at 9:30 a.m. and lasts until 4 p.m., features workshops on a variety of subjects, from children and youth-focused workshops to spiritual discipline workshops to those focused on missions and outreach. The design team urges local church leaders to carpool to the event to minimize travel costs and to maximize the benefits of the day by continuing the learning conversation during the return trip.

The conference cost $25 per person. A boxed lunch from Chick-fil-A is included in the registration fee. Safe Sanctuaries compliant childcare is available for newborn to fifth-grade children at a cost of $10 per child which covers the cost of their lunch. Pre-registration is required for childcare. .5 CEU credits are available for this event.
