D r. William (Bill) Scroggins took office as the ninth President & CEO of the College on July 1, 2011. He has “hit the ground running” since, and worked closely with Senate and CSEA leadership to bring professional development

breakout sessions for our Classified staff on August 25, Convocation Day. Classified staff have been impressed with Dr. Scroggins’ transparency in leadership, noting that they appreciate information he shares regarding Cabinet meetings and reports to the

Board of Trustees via campus-wide emails.

The Classified Senate welcomes Bill Scroggins to the campus, and we look forward

to working with him in serving our students.

T o say that Mt. SAC has been a part of Marchelle’s life since childhood would only be the half of it. Growing

up in Walnut a few blocks away from the college, Marchelle dreamed of attending and working at Mt. SAC since the age of six. “I feel as if I’ve come full circle,” Marchelle shares. As a work study student, Marchelle worked in the C.A.L.L. Center (Community Adult Learning Lab), now known as Adult Basic Education. She was hired full time in 2000 as secretary in the ESL department of

the Continuing Education division.

Marchelle took the helm of Classified Senate this past July, and looks forward to working closely with both CSEA units to further the inclusion of Classified staff on governance and participatory college committees. Other goals she hopes to achieve during her tenure include the New Classified Employee Mentor program, and a successful fund-raising year for our Professional Growth Scholarship

fund.

“The Classified Senate's mission is to provide Classified employees with a formal participatory voice in supporting

the College’s mission, vision and core values.”

As Fall begins, CSEA 262 begins preparing for their Executive Board Elections in December. This is

a great opportunity for each of YOU to become actively involved in the running of YOUR Chapter.

This year we will be electing the following positions: 1st Vice President, Secretary, Chief Job Stew-

ard, and Site Representative Coordinator. The election process begins at our October Chapter Meet-

ing, where we begin accepting nominations for these positions from the membership. Nominations

remain open until the conclusion of our November Chapter Meeting. The official elections of these

officers will take place at our December meeting.

To nominate and vote you MUST be a Chapter 262 member. To be eligible to hold office, you MUST be a Chapter

262 member “in good standing.” That means, having been a local Chapter member for at least six consecutive calendar

months immediately proceeding the month in which you are nominated. You should verify your eligibility to nomi-

nate, vote, and hold office, by contacting Linda Tackett, x5532 or via email, [email protected].

To learn more about the duties of each office, please attend the Executive Board orientation meeting on Wednesday,

October 5, 1:00 – 2:00 pm, in Building 6, Room 144.

Most classified on campus are Chapter 262 members. However, there are a few who think they are Chapter 262 mem-

bers, but are actually “Fair Share Fee Payers.” (Again, call Linda Tackett to verify your standing.) Being a Chapter

262 member is very affordable. For a mere $1 per month for ten months of the year, you are eligible to fully participate

in our elections process, vote on contract matters, and receive a variety of discounts through CSEA.

Convocation Day for Classified

At the Fall Opening Meeting for Classified, held August 26th, Classified staff were brought up to speed on current budget, facilities and staffing issues. Questions were submitted to a panel that included Vice Presidents and CSEA leadership. This year, Dr. Scroggins asked that CSEA and Senate plan professional development breakout sessions specific to Classified con-cerns. President Nairne-Proulx commented, “I was pleased that feedback regarding the day was predominantly positive. It was unfortunate that the response was not greater in numbers; I was told by some that it was quite difficult to get away from their offices. Regarding the breakout sessions, the events that I heard the most about were the Microsoft Word/Excel, EEO Training and the Office Ergonomics. I would have to say the only nega-tive that I heard was that there were not enough sessions of-fered.”

The annual Welcome Back BBQ was held August 26, following both opening meeting sessions. The Mt. SAC family enjoyed an excellent lunch served up by

Sodexo, our new food services/catering company. Sodexo staff prepared, cooked and served this year, providing the opportunity for all faculty, staff and managers

to relax and reconnect with each other after the long summer.

“Baby, we’re The Classified!”

The 2011 Classified Service Recognition awards (The Classys) ceremony was held May 25 in the Sophia B. Clarke Theater. Joan and Melissa “Shivers” (Caitlin Rodriguez and Jill Dolan) got us Red Carpet Ready before the big show began. Our wonder-

ful emcee, Clarence Brown, kept the show upbeat with his improv skills, and Cliff Notes kept us entertained. We recognized service years, retirement, and awarded $2400 in scholarships. We introduced the Senate’s Excellence Awards, given to Clas-sified staff that best exemplified the standards set in each category. Awards were pre-

sented to: Laura Martinez, College Leadership; Jose Briceno, Campus Improvement; Darlene Vale, Citi-zenship; Jeff George, Best Attitude; Dena Schumaker, Creativity & Innovation; Karen Naveda, College Appreciation; Marlene Ward, Rookie of the Year; Anna Acosta, Outstanding Achievement; Caridad Oppen-
