    40 I/Os controller

The Modicon M218 logic controller is a compact, expandable controller that offers

all-in-one solutions in a compact unit.

Twelve models are available, from 16 to 60 I/Os.

The offer range has been design to provide optimized configurations:

depending on the model, analog I/Os, fast inputs for high speed counters and

pulses train outputs, serial links and EtherNet connection are embedded in the

    controller.

The mix of embedded digital I/Os, analog I/Os, fast inputs for high speed counters,

pulses train outputs and EtherNet connection, allows to cover most of the needs.

b These controllers have a power supply between 100 and 240 Vac or 24Vdc.

b Each of them has two serial links RS485 to connect with modbus devices.

b One run/stop switch is integrated on each controller to toggle its status

b The I/Os are connected with robust and removable screw terminal blocks

b For an easy wiring, only one type of screw is available on the controller

b To avoid any wrong wiring, the screws have different colors depending on their

    usage

    M218 Architecture

    M218 controller with expansions

M218 controllers connect with their expansion through a soft ribbon cable. Thanks to a simple accessory extension dock - M218 can also connect with the expansions modules TM2 system , shared with Twido controller, M238 controller and XBTGC HMI controller.

M218 expansions and TM2 system expansions can be mixed on a very same M218 controller. Thus offering to the user the flexibility of a full system. b 16I/Os controller TM218LDA16DRN can be expanded with up to 4 expansion modules b 24 I/Os controllers TM218LD..24...N can be expanded with up to 4 expansion modules b 40 and 60 I/Os controllers TM218LD..40...N and TM218LDA60DRN can be expanded with up to 7 expansion modules

Design and installation of Modicon M218 applications

    Functions

    Analog functions

For machines that require functions to process analog signals, the model TM218LDA40DR2HN embeds 2 voltage or current analog outputs, and the model TM218LDA40DR4PHN embeds 2 voltage or current analog inputs and 2 voltage or current analog outputs , both of them with 12-bit resolution. Thanks to these embedded analog I/Os, the number of product references to be used is optimized and the choice of I/O mix is simplified.

    High-speed counter (HSC)

In order to meet requirements for machine productivity, the models TM218LD...HN embed two fast inputs for high-speed counters with a counting frequency up to 100KHz. These HSC have four main functions: b Up/down counter with 5 different mode of operations. b Up/down 2-phase counter (AB phase). b Event counter. b Frequency meter. Linked to HSC, thresholds and reflex outputs can be easily and quickly set-up to create cost-effective solution in fast counting applications.

    Pulses train output (PTO)

M218 controller : Zoom on the serial link connectors

M218 controller : Zoom on EtherNet connector

In addition to the HSC, the models TM218LD...PHN offer 2 PTO channels associated

    with 4 transistor outputs.

These two channels can be separately configured either in PTO or PWM function.

The Pulse Train Output (PTO) function provides a square wave output for a

specified number of pulses and a cycle time.

The Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) uses a square wave whose duty cycle is

modulated resulting in the variation of the average value of the waveform.

Applications requiring motion functions, speed control and position control can be

    easily achieved :

The servos, being hardwired to the M218 PTO outputs, receives a defined number

of pulses during a defined cycle time. This pulses signal is converted into motion

and then controls speed and position of the driven axis.

    Communication function

    Modbus serial link

Each M218 controllers has as standard two RS485 serial link and incorporate with

    industry standard protocol :

v Modbus TRU and ASCII (Slave or Master)

    v Free ASCII

    Ethernet

The models TM218LDAE..DR..N have an embedded Ethernet port and support Ethernet TCP Modbus as service.

    Principle

In order to protect against external interference, cables and cord sets carrying the signals below must be shielded: b Incremental encoders and sensors connected to the fast inputs and used in counter mode (> 100 Hz). b Actuators with PTO/PWM signals connected to the fast outputs for TM218LD...P.N b Sensors and actuators connected to the analog I/O

    b Serial links

The use of shielded cables requires compliance with the following wiring rules:

b Shielding 360 connected to earth at both ends of the cables. Metal

conduit or ducting can be used for part of the shielding length provided that

there is no break in the continuity of the earth connections.

b Keep cables carrying signals of different categories as far apart as possible.

Installation diagram for Modicon M218 controller

1 Metal plate or metal panel (earthed casing) connected to the device's

    protective earth (PE)

    2 Modicon M218 logic controller

3 Shielding connection clamp TM200 RSRCEMC: Attach and earth the

    shielding

of cables 4 and 8 as close as possible to the controller base:

    - Strip the shielding (on the clamp)

    - Attach the cable to the metal support 1 by attaching the clamp to the

    stripped part of the shielding.

The shielding must be clamped tightly enough to the metal support to

    ensure good contact.

4 Shielded cables for connecting the fast outputs to the actuators with

    PTO/PWM signals

5 Shielded cord set for connecting serial links SL1 and SL2 (cord sets

    include the earthing lug)

6 Shielded cable for connecting the analog I/Os

7 Unshielded power supply wires or cable (2 conductors + Earth)

8 Shielded cable for connecting the encoder and sensor signals used on

the fast inputs in counter mode

Note: These shielding connections do not remove the need to connect the PE protective conductors (green-yellow) to the appropriate terminals

    on each unit or product.

    Description

    1 2

    3

The TM2USBABDEV1 application loader is an accessory which is designed to simplify updating and duplication of applications on Modicon M218 or M238 Logic Controller without the need for a programming terminal.

4 p For updating: an application generated by SoMachine, stored on a USB memory stick, will be transferred by the application loader to an M218 or M238 controller. p For duplication: an application is transferred from an M218 or M238 controller to the application loader. The application is stored on a USB memory stick, then transferred from the application loader to another M218 or M238 controller.

The front panel of the TM2USBABDEV1 application loader features:

1-A USB port (marked PLC) for the connection cable to the mini-B USB port

(marked Prg. Port) on the Modicon M218 or M238 logic controller.

2-A USB port (marked key) for the USB memory stick (holding the application).

3-An On/Off button to the start the transfer.

4-Four operation LED indicators (PWR, COM, ERR, STS).

    Presentation, Modicon M218 logic controller

description TM2 Discrete I/O extension modules

    Presentation

The offer discrete I/O extension modules includes input modules, output modules

and mixed input/output modules. With the 15 I/O modules offered, in addition to

the I/O integrated in 24 I/O compact base controllers and modular base controllers,

configurations can be adapted to best suit application requirements, so optimising

    costs.

The following discrete I/O modules are available:

    b Four c 24 V discrete input modules comprising an 8, 16 and a 32-channel

module, equipped with either removable screw terminal blocks or HE 10 connector,

depending on the model. These modules can be either sink or source .

    b One a 120 V discrete input module, 8 channels, equipped with a removable

    screw terminal block.

b Eight discrete output modules comprising two output modules with 8 and 16 relay

outputs, output modules with 8, 16 or 32-channel sink or source transistor

outputs, equipped with either removable screw terminal blocks or HE 10 connector,

    depending on the model.

b Two mixed discrete input and output modules, comprising one 4-channel input/

4-channel relay output module with removable screw terminal block and one

16-channel input/8-channel relay output module with non-removable spring terminal

    block.

The narrow width of these I/O modules (17.5 mm, 23.5 mm, 29.7 mm or 39.1 mm)

makes it possible to build Modicon M238, Twido or Modicon OTB configurations of

    up to 248 I/O with a minimal overall size of L 364.9 mm x H 90 mm x D 81.3 mm.

Discrete I/O extension modules and the analogue I/O modules are connected to the

different base controller according to the following rules:

    b Modicon M218 24 I/O compact base controllers, TM218LDAp24DRpN: 4 modules max.

    b Modicon M218 40 I/O compact base controllers, TM218LDAp40DppHN: 7 modules max.

    b Modicon M238 24 I/O compact base controllers, TM238Lpppppp : 7 modules max.

b Twido 24 E/S compact base controllers, TWD LCpA 24DRF: 4 modules max.

b Twido 40 E/S compact base controllers, TWD LCpp 40DRF: 7 modules max.

b Twido 20 E/S modular base controllers, TWD LMDA 20DpK: 4 modules max.

    b Twido 20 E/S and 40 E/S modular base controllers, TWD LMDA 20DRT/40DpK:

    7 modules max.

b Magelis HMI Controller, XBT GC1100p: 2 modules max.

b Magelis HMI Controller, XBT GC2pp0p: 3 modules max

    b Modicon OTB Interface 20 E/S, OTB 1p0 DM9LP: 7 modules max.

All the discrete I/O modules are electrically isolated with the use of a photocoupler

between the internal electronic circuit and the input/output channels.

Description Discrete I/O extension modules comprise: 1 An extension connector for electrical connection to the previous module (1). 2 One or two blocks for displaying the channels and module diagnostics. 3 One or two connection components of varying type, depending on the model:

removable screw terminal block (1 or 2) for modules whose reference ends in T, HE 10 connector (1 or 2) for modules whose reference ends in K, non-removable spring terminal block for module TM2 DMM 24DRF.

4 Latching mechanism for attachment to the previous module.

These modules are mounted on a symmetrical 5 rail. Fixing kit TWD XMT 5 (supplied in lots of 5) allows plate or panel mounting. For modules with removable screw terminal block, the terminal blocks are supplied with the module.

The OTB 9ZZ 61JP supply common distribution module (2 isolated groups of 10 terminals) simplifies the wiring of supply commons of sensors or actuators via 2 removable screw terminal blocks.

    (1) A connector on the right-hand side ensures continuity of the electrical link with the next I/O module.
