0.0 INTRODUCTION

DESIGN BRIEF

Design a sleep ‘pod‘ for 1 person. While sleep in the work place is seen as counterproductive, recent research has shown that power-nap can increase brain function and productivity at work. The pod or device will allow 1 person to take a powernap in the university campus; either at the dest, library or student union house.

My object is a tail of a wooden alligator toy.

When drawing the series of measured drawings, I measured different elements of the object first (total length and width, length of each wooden block and distance of each gap). Then I traced the object onto paper to portray its main outline because the size of the object can be drawn in scale 1:1. The whole object is formed by repeating geometric wooden blocks. Those blockes distributed staggered in left and right (asymmetric) in order to allow more spaces in the gap to twist. There is a fabric in between to glued blocks in both side together. Due to the softness of fabric and use it as a central axis, it allows the object to twist.

Inspiring by the object, I have three different sketch designs for sleeping pod based on its ability of twist of the object and personal space.

Inspired by straws which are streched easily. It closely fitted the human body shape, created as a boundary. Us-ing the spinning-top shape wrapping around body ro create a sense of secu-rity and protection.

Formed by the spinning-top shape rounded the body. And the spinning-top shape connected by wires.

Inspired by hedgehog. By using the helmet shape to cre-ate a sense of privacy.

REFLECTION

Module one of ideation aims on finding inspiration from the object assigned at tutorial which is a tail of a wooden toy. I’m more focusing on extract-ing and transforming the main shape and struc-ture system and trying to keep focus on creating designs that fit human body instead of order inner space. In the reading ‘Personal space : the behavioral basis of design’, Robert Sommer has points out that boundary might vary on different crowdedness and different relationship between the person who stands beside you. After reading

this, I started thinking what personal space means to myself. I think personal space is not how much space you have for yourself, but how much space you have between you and others. People might not mind to be alone (it’s ‘personal’afterall), but they must need to feel safe and be protected, so the key concepy of my designs is focusing on safety, protection and sense of security.

The process of measuring and model making in rhino provided me opportunities to take a good look at my object with more care. The layout of the wooden toy was inspirited by the reading of

‘how to lay out a croissant’ by Miralles and Pinos.

Compare the rhino model virsion one (left) with virsion two(on cover), we changed the central part of it. In virsion one, central part (which is also the part protecting human body at front) is lack of connection, so we changed it into a series central connection, for better protection for human body, also for seperate the weight load evenly.

For protoytpe making, we used plastic sheet and plastic bag sealer, sealer can heat and melt the plastic in order to seal it. First we tried to inflate it, but the plastic sealer cannot seal it compeletly, so we used wools as infill.

REFLECTION

We mainly focus our sleeping pod on ‘sleep’, we need to make it to be comfort-able, so softness of it is cruicial. After trying inflation in out prototype, we found out that using wools as infill is more efficient and comfortable for human body. As we de-cided that our model is mainly focusing on sleeping on ground or leaning on the wall, the shape of our model has been decided

as our rhino model shown. The series central connection could seperate the weight load evenly and also protect our chest, which is one of the most sensitive part of human body, also provide more sense of security. When making our prototype, we founa that the plastic bag sealer is not reallyefficient for compeletly sealing the plastic sheet we use, after discussion we think using sewing ma-chine or soldering iron will be better ideas since they could seal the plastic sheet

better and fater. The Sleep Suit by Forrest Jessee is primarily made out of EVA foam, which is also used for padding and shock absorption in spots equipment. The material is in a textile pattern, with a structural logic to support the weight of the human body. For our model, we are aiming on creating a sleeping pod like this.

After last week’s feedback, we decided to change our shape from wrapping around whole body to cover the top body. We changed the rhino model into polysurfaces, then unroll them and labled every piece. After unrolling the sur-faces we printed every unrolled piece out. Then we cut our fabric along the unrolled surfaces and connected them by using soldering iron. In the end we sew some fragile con-nection to reinforce it.

REFLECTION

In this module, we finally finished the whole physical model. During the making process, firstly we used soldering iron to connect only, but some of the connection parts cracked and splited easily, and there were some solering iron marks on the model which looks ugly and not neat. After that we tried to sew all the connection parts, which could tight all the connection together more secure, but this way was too wasting time. Finally we decided to use soldering iron first and sew some main connection and fragile parts. Although we only have two people in team, the working load was quite heavy, happily we finally completed it.

REFLECTION

This project was a really interesting and challenging one. It not only test our designs but also our both digital and physical model making ability. We have encountered varies of difficulties such as firstly our shape was not satisfied, then we cannot find a suitable material, and the physical model making progress was quite tough, but after all these we finally compeleted our Sleeping Pod. Our tutor, Lyle, he gave us a lot of help with resolving our problems and pointing out what we need to improve.

With the project has done, it has really imparted me a lot of knowledge and understanding. It also makes me learning and unlocking my design taste and skill. I’m quite proud that I have suc-cesded in creating something I once only could see about.
