Students will also be encouraged to focus on the writing process: brainstorming, organizing, peer-editing, proofreading and publishing. The course provides a balance between freedom and creativity with discipline and structure Learning Outcome: Reading Objectives The students will demonstrate an ability to read for comprehension. The students will be able to recognize and employ various rhetorical strategies such as being aware of the authors’ arguments, backgrounds, ideological perspectives, purposes, etc. The students will extend their knowledge of rhetorical strategies to help them learn how to read critically. Writing Objectives The students will utilize different writing strategies such as summarizing, note-taking, outlining, etc, to help them comprehend a wide array of texts. The students will plan, organize and write persuasive, creative and scholarly writing to address a specific audience and purpose. The students will revise writing for clarity, coherence and unity. M.6 English for Critical Thinking 5 Course Description Instructor: Ajarn Stephen McGhee Matayom: 6 Academic year: 2012 Semester: 2 Code: 33207 Subject: English for Critical Thinking 4 Periods/ Week / Semester Credit: 2.0 G 43101/43102 Basic English Michael Subject Description: The purpose of this course is to further develop students’ knowledge of and familiarity with British Literature. Students will become acquainted with more sophisticated references and nuances of both written and spoken English. Acquiring a broad understanding of British Literature will help them to become a truly educated English language speaker. The course will follow the development of English Literature from an historical perspective. The second semester covers the 1500s to the 19th century. The English Renaissance celebrates Britain’s greatest writer, William Shakespeare. This will be followed by a look at the Restoration through the diaries of Samuel Pepys. The writings of Mary Shelley shall guide the students through the Romantic period. Objective:

The course is expected to be appropriately challenging for M6 students studying this year.

Through this historical approach, students are expected enhance their critical reading skills.

The historical and literary aspects of this course will help students to develop their analytical skills.

Writing being the other major course component, will focus on various forms of essay writing.

In order to prepare students for university entrance, they shall develop their writing skills so that they are able to produce quality work within a set time limit.

It is expected that after completing this course students shall possess a finer knowledge of and appreciation for British Literature.

Course Content:

1. Glencoe Readers’ Choice Literature: World Literature 2. Various independent sources such as reading extracts, critical appraisals, the internet,

Reading Through guided instruction, students will develop their analytical skills towards various forms of literature be it poem, play, novel or non-fiction. They will be taught how to make inferences, draw conclusions and evaluate critically the readings they follow. Historical background building shall be presented to aid comprehension and focus students’ attention. Students will be encouraged to think about themes and connect them with their own lives. They shall be taught and given models of essential reading and thinking skills (including summarizing, questioning and predicting). Students will be given opportunities to practice, reapply and connect these skills to other skills both within and beyond this course. They will be encouraged to read widely and eagerly. Vocabulary building shall be developed through classroom discussion and practice by using context-clues and looking at figurative language and other language devices such as idioms and analogies. Writing Students will be encouraged to keep a journal for writing their responses to their reading, for note taking and making sense of details. Also, students will be encouraged to produce their own creative writing. The writing activities will reinforce students’ understanding of form and function. This will be achieved through writing essays, sonnets, narratives, dialogues, summaries and other distinctive forms. Through activities and assessments, students shall have practice in developing their writing skills. Essay writing will include various approaches such as compare and contrast, cause and effect. analysis, paraphrase & summary, descriptive, and argumentative/persuasive writing. The writing process shall include prewriting, drafting, revising, editing/proofreading and publishing/presenting. Students will be given guidelines on how to write within a time limit. Course Description:

M6 English for Careers is a course designed to prepare M6 students for university and their future careers. In the first semester, the course will focus on self-evaluation of personality, skills/abilities in order to help the students learn more about themselves as individuals . Additionally, the students will conduct research on university faculties and/or careers which interest them. Once they have a better idea of who they are and what they plan to study/do in the future, we will then work on incorporating what they have learned into three main areas: 1) Writing a Personal Statement, 2) Writing a Resume and 3) Practicing Interviewing Techniques . Lastly, some time will be allotted in class to provide an overview of the major standardized exams, i.e., GAT/PAT/O-Net and SAT and the students will be given opportunities to take practice versions of these exams.
