Replacing a bridge which had fallen into disrepair, the prominent location of this structure midway between Edinburgh and Glasgow ensured that it would become a focal point, viewed by thousands of motorists each day. Our response was to create an eye-catching, highly visual design which provides a striking landmark both by day and night. Working with contractor Raynesway Construction Ltd and steel fabricator SH Structures, we designed a light weight helical truss frame with approach ramps and stairs. This fully enclosed, well lit crossing enables safe passage across the busy traffic corridor for both able bodied people and those with impaired mobility. Prefabrication was used at every stage on this project to ensure the most efficient construction programme possible and minimise disruption to traffic flow. The main span was delivered to site in six sections, which were welded together to create one unit, then lifted into place overnight. This challenging process saw the new span raised above the existing bridge, then lowered onto new piers. The footbridge was a finalist in the British Construction Industry Awards 2009 and was highly commended in the Engineering Excellence Awards 2009. BuroHappold Engineering was commissioned to provide detailed design for this bridge across Scotland’s busiest motorway, connecting sections of the Heart of Scotland motorway services.
