Studying at ULIP

The full-time programme lasts 52 weeks, withteaching spread over the Autumn and Springterms.

Each term is 11 weeks, with a reading week inthe middle. Annual term dates are made availableon the ULIP website.

Induction takes place during the first week ofthe Autumn term.

Study Resources & SupportThe Institute’s central location on the Rive Gauche(Left Bank) of the Seine means it is within easyreach of all corners of the city. All facilities,including classrooms, MA study space, and a caféare located on site. Students benefit from studyingin a supportive and friendly environment.

Learning Resources Centre (LRC)Postgraduate students have full access to ULIP’sLRC which combines a library with computingand other facilities. On the 1st floor, overlookingthe Esplanade des Invalides, the LRC housesvarious film and literary resources, and offers aquiet place for study. Electronic journal resourcesare available, and the Internet can be accessedboth via a wireless Internet connection, as well asthrough the computer room. Students also haveaccess to printers and photocopiers.

Parisian LibrariesULIP students have ready access to several nearbygeneral and specialist university, government, andprivate libraries suitable for graduate study. All ofthese libraries have substantial holdings inEnglish, and guidance on making use of them isprovided by the LRC when you register for yourdegree.

Electronic supportULIP provides all MA students with access to itsMoodle virtual learning environment. Thisfacilitates the dissemination of both academic andadministrative information, as well as presentingan additional medium for study support.

French languageMany students wish to take advantage of theirtime in Paris to learn French. Languageinstruction is available through various Parisianinstitutions, depending on student competenciesand requirements.

The ULIP notice boards are also commonlyused for advertisements by French native speakerswho offer private lessons and/or informal Frenchconversation, or indeed who will exchangeinstruction in their language for lessons inEnglish.

OverviewThis exciting Masters programme offers students theopportunity to explore key areas of the cultural andintellectual life of Paris. All teaching takes place atULIP, within an historic building in the 7tharrondissement in central Paris. The aim is for studentsto develop practical and theoretical skills whilstdeepening their knowledge of Paris through taughtcourses and directed research.

Paris has been a thriving student city since theSorbonne was established in 1253. It is an ideal placeto immerse yourself in French history and culture. Asone of the most exciting and stimulating cities in theworld, it provides a unique context for directintellectual engagement with the realities of Paris,both past and present.

Applying to ULIPEntry RequirementsStudents should have a good upper second-class honours degree or equivalent. Those for whom English is a secondlanguage must provide satisfactoryevidence of proficiency in English. There isno French language requirement butstudents are encouraged to take appropriatelanguage courses according to the levelthey have attained. Students with a highlevel of French are encouraged to readbilingually.
