Although primarily intended forpublic librarians, the book includes materialthat might be of interest to librarians of alltypes. For example, there are discussions ofrelationship marketing, planning, customerservice issues, signage, promotion, the costsof library use, educating staff aboutmarketing, and getting organizationalsupport for marketing efforts.

Ruth Fraley, former Assistant Deputy ChiefAdministrator of the New York StateUnified Court System and Consultant inLegal Information and Record Management,facilitated a one day session with JCLL’sboard of directors and library staff todevelop a strategic plan for JCLL on January26, 2002.

The workshop began with an environmentalscan of world and local events impactingJCLL’s future role to the 16th Circuit Courtof Jackson County, MO and librarymembers. It concluded over a late lunchwhere board members and staff articulatedtheir visions for the Library’s future.

Linda Roser, Reference Librarian,presented a CLE program for the KansasCity Metropolitan Bar Association on March

07, 2002. QuickNet: Statutes, Regulations& Ordinances was offered in the computertraining classroom at the KCMBA andoffered participants tips and tricks for usingthe Internet to locate primary law. Theprogram is approved for CLE credit inMissouri and Kansas.

Roser will present a CLE class to the judgesand clerks of the 16th Circuit Court ofJackson County, MO in late March. Shewill demonstrate the electronic researchresources available to court users and offersuggestions and strategies regarding theappropriate resource for specific researchquestions.

Debbie Steele, Technical Services Librarian,is enrolled in “Legal Bibliography andReference” an online course via the Internetoffered through the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Shook, Hardy & Bacon, LLP

Evalyn Bollinger, former MAALL member,is working as a part-time contract employeefor SHB’s office located in Houston, Texas.

Bollinger worked at the Jackson CountyLaw Library, the law library at the law firmof Gage & Tucker, now Lathrop & Gage,and the Leon E. Bloch Law Library at theUniversity of Missouri-Kansas City. Bollinger volunteered on the 1999 MAALLLocal Arrangements Committee beforemoving to Houston in 2000.

Janet McKinney, Computer ServicesLibrarian at SHB, published an article onLLRX.com on February 01, 2002 entitled“Shaking Up Shook: A Case Study inImplementing Lawport Portal” athttp://www.llrx.com/features/lawport.htm. It reviews a commercial intranet product andpresents a case study of its implementationat Shook, Hardy & Bacon.

University of Missouri-Columbia School ofLaw Library

Randy Diamond, MU School of Law,Trish Cervenka, Saint Louis UniversitySchool of Law, and Jeff Sewell, Shook,Hardy & Bacon LLP, are teaching Legal Bibliography and Reference for the MUSchool of Information Science & LearningTechnologies in winter semester 2002. Thecourse is offered through MU Direct usingBlackboard course software and ERES (theElectronic Reserve System at MU). A totalof twenty-seven students are enrolled insections in Columbia, Kansas City and St.Louis. The class includes both MLSstudents and practicing librarians who aretaking the course for continuing education. Students have access to Lexis and Westlaw. The course meets in four Saturday face-to-face sessions and online for weeklyassignments and discussion forums.

University of Missouri-Kansas City -- Leon E. Bloch Law Library

Lissa Lord, Director of ElectronicCommunications, reports that the law schoolsearch committee is nearing completion ofthe search for a library director. PatriciaHarris O’Connor vacated the position toaccept a full-time faculty appointment.

The staff’s congratulations and welcomewill accompany a brief biography of the newdirector in the next issue of MAALLMarkings.

The UMKC Law Library staff worked withfaculty to produce an online index of facultyscholarly writings and activities. Lordstates that “it is truly impressive to see thenumber and quality of articles, books,presentations and professional opportunitiesin which our law faculty engages.” Thisresource is an excellent tool for librarians touse when ordering new research materials

Access for the Hearing and SpeechImpaired

“Maryland State Law Library HeightensAccess to Its Services for the Deaf, Hearingand Speech Disabled,” LLAM News, vol. 20.no. 1-2, Sept./Dec. 2001, p. 5. The ChiefJustice of the Maryland state courts has beena proponent of providing access to the statecourts for the disabled. Part of this effort hasresulted in better access to legal informationby the hearing and speeched impaired. Thestate law library now has special equipmentfor outside callers and for people in thelibrary that allows them to communicatemore effectively with the library staff.

Information in Electronic Format

Lawless, Helen, “The Incredible ShrinkingLaw Library?” LLAGNY Law Lines, vol. 25,no. 2, Dec. 2001. This author points out thevarious challenges in moving from print toelectronic only sources. These challengesinclude having staff, patrons, supportpersonnel (like information technology staff)involved in the decision making, in thetraining and sharing of information.

The Virtual Law Library was the title of aspecial section of the Chicago Area LawLibraries newsletter last year. The specialsection was a compilation of articles byvarious information professionals. The menus from the Peabody Hotelin Orlando are summarized below. The cost is higher this year, so we

thought the members might like tocomment on the selections and possiblyhelp us decide. Each of the choices cancontain vegetarian selections. How doyou feel about a box lunch–or would yourather have a buffet? MAALL hashelped with the cost in the past, but thisyear even with help our cost will behigher. Let us know what you think!

The annual conference menu choicesvary in selection and pricing. I haveonly listed those menus which haveprices under $40.00.
