Sila ay sina Defence Secre-tary Fidel V. Ramos, Trade Sec-retary Jose Concepcion Jr., Natu-ral Resources Secretary Fulgen-cio Factoran, Health SecretaryAlfredo Bengson, Social WelfareSecretary Mita Pardo-De Taveraat Cabinet Secretary Ping DeJesus.

* * *Sa pagpanaw ng dating pa-

ngulong Cory Aquino, nagluluksarin ang mga Bulakenyo. Mana-natili siyang nasa puso at diwa ngmga Bulakenyo.

Paalam, Tita Cory.

— Patnugot

FIRST of all let me thank Father Robert Reyes for inviting meto join you in this evening of prayer for peace and enlighten-ment.

During these difficult times it is fitting that we Filipinos cometogether at the spiritual level. Individually and collectively, weneed to re-affirm — before God, before ourselves and before ourfamilies — the fundamental values that we hold and cherish, the values that define us as Christians and as Filipinos.

In the current state of social conflict, we hear many voicesand viewpoints. To see through the confusion, we have to beclear about “what” we believe before we can determine “who” tobelieve. Unfortunately. This is not as simple or as easy as it soundsthese days. Discerning right from wrong, good from evil, is nolonger as clear as telling black from white. For example, in asituation where several choices present themselves, how manyof us would be content with opting for the “lesser evil.” Whenmany people routinely do something that we know to be wrong.Does that make it right? If we believe that an objective is good, would we accept any means — including vile methods — toachieve it?

If we resign ourselves to a value system where everything isrelative, then our nation is condemned to perdition. Forget aboutpolitical stability or economic progress. As Rizal said over a hun-dred years ago, any society built on weak moral foundations can-not last.

Through gatherings such as this, let us aspire to achieve moralclarity through prayer, introspection and discernment.

The days of EDSA 1 and EDSA Dos are glorious moments toremember in our recent history, but we have to move forward.People Power would be meaningless unless the poorest Filipinosare empowered to uplift their lives and thereby strengthen ourdemocracy at its roots.

Unfortunately, some quarters insist that I am trying to whipup another “People Power” revolution to oust the President. Thisis a gross misreading of my intentions.

As I have said over and over again, I am not demanding thePresident’s resignation.

Kaya kanya-kanya sila ngmamamatay-tao. Taong bayanang nahihirapan. Pati inosente aynadadamay.

The making of salted eggsSAN FRANCISCO — Filipino-Americans fret over a stark irony.Martial law fears have resurgedprecisely when Corazon Aquino, who sparked “People Power” intosmashing Marcos dictatorship, battles cancer.

This irony will dog PresidentGloria Macapagal Arroyo whenshe meets President BarackObama on July 30. So will Fil-American activist Melissa Roxas’abduction.

Under Leila De Lima, theonce-flabby Commission on Hu-man Rights pieced together thesix-day snatch and torture ofRoxas. The evidence confirms theState Department’s annual hu-man rights reports of impunitythat cloaks abductors and tortur-ers, both military and insurgents.

Majority (58%) of Fil-Ameri-cans voted for Obama. The 2007census tallied 3.1 million Filipi-nos in the U.S. They’re the sec-ond largest Asian Americangroup. Almost half of Filipino im-migrants cluster in this state.Hawaii, New York, Illinois andNew Jersey account for smaller

THIS is still a dream strugglinghard to become a crisp reality.Imagine if our celebrities, insteadof showing off their inanities, fri-volity and the like, become mod-els of virtues, showcasing themany aspects of these ideal hu-man qualities!

At the moment, it sounds veryunbelievable, quixotic, even im-possible, but there’s always hopein our world. We need to put teethinto that hope by making a con-certed and sustained effort to cre-ate a culture of virtues in ourworld of media, entertainmentand showbiz.

Of course, all this should bepursued on the basis first of allof spiritual and supernaturalmeans of prayer, sacrifice, sacra-ments, doctrine. But all the hu-man means, like the virtues andall the way to the art and skill ofmaking war, should not be ne-glected either.

I AM very much inspired by thewarm response of my readers tomy offer of teaching local commu-nities about computerizing thedelivery of public services by wayof low cost hardware and soft-ware. To those who are not tech-nologically savvy, I would like toexplain that in my offer, I wastalking about using open sourcesoftware like Linux, and free ap-plications software that will bedonated by some advanced localgovernment units (LGU).

In reality, the computerizationof public services delivery doesnot really require rocket science. Most of the LGUs could actuallyafford it, except for those at thelow end, the fourth class and thethird class municipalities. Most ofthe barangay units could not af-ford it however, and this is wherelow cost machines and freewarecould be most useful.

Linux and all the otherfreeware have been around for along time, but it was previouslyvery difficult to maintain thesesystems, because these were nottoo user friendly. Over the yearshowever, these freeware haveevolved to a point wherein ordi-nary users could actually main-tain these on their own. In addi-tion to that, online tech supportis now available.

No, sir! These rights and free-dom need a clear foundation oftruth and sense of responsibilityto spring from. Otherwise, theybecome a spout of licentiousness,a source of malice and evil in alltheir varied expressions andsubtle forms.

There has to be a better un-derstanding of these human pow-ers and privileges that have of-ten been misused and abused. Atthis time, with all that we haveaccomplished as well as the direlessons learned from sad experi-ences, we should already knowthe delicate character of theseprivileges.

They have at least dual effects, good or bad, and in betweenthem, endless possibilities andvariations and combinations thatwe should try our best to rein in,control and direct properly.

There are signs we have lostcontrol of these crucial humanelements, and we just allow our-selves to be at the mercy ofchance. This latter thinking isnaïve, because things are never

happen purely by chance. Theyare ruled, if not by us, then byhigher spirits, that is, either byGod or the devil, to be simplisticabout it.

I cannot understand, for ex-ample, why everyday newspapersshould highlight the escapades ofso-called sex-kittens and brutehunks, their strange peculiaritiesand idiosyncracies, etc.

They seem to glorify vanityand to flaunt a certain disturb-ing notion that at some point, certain people, precisely the ce-lebrities, can be above moral con-siderations. They can do any-thing in public and for public con-sumption without having to ac-count for it.

One time, while in a taxi, Iheard over the radio the driverwas listening to, songs withclearly risqué lyrics embedded indouble-meaning words. And theannouncer was reeking with flip-pant commentaries soaked withsexual innuendoes. All this, donewith an air of impunity!

Ok, it’s all very easy to com-plain, and we should not stopthere. We need to build, to con-

we had no helmets. (Not to men-tion the risks we took hitch-hik-ing.) As children, we would ridein cars with no seatbelts or airbags. Riding in the back of apickup truck on a warm day wasalways a special treat. We drankwater from the garden hose andnot from a bottle. Horrors! We atecupcakes, bread and butter, anddrank soda pop with sugar in it,but we were never overweightbecause we were always outsideplaying. We shared one soft drinkwith four friends, from one bottle, and no one actually died fromthis.”

“We would spend hours build-ing our go-carts out of scraps andthen rode down the hill, only tofind out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes afew times, we learned to solve theproblem. We would leave home inthe morning and play all day, aslong as we were back when the

streetlights came on. No one wasable to reach us all day.”

“NO CELL PHONES!!!!! Un-thinkable! We did not have Playstations, Nintendo 64, X-Boxes,no video games at all, no 399channels on cable, movies on vid-eotape or DVD, surround sound, personal cell phones, personalcomputers, or Internet chatrooms. We knew how to chatwithout the Internet. We hadfriends! We went outside andfound them.”

“We played dodge ball, andsometimes, the ball would reallyhurt. We fell out of trees, got cutand broke bones and teeth, andthere were no lawsuits from theseaccidents. Computerization is not the beall and end all of local public ser-vices delivery. Computers aresimply just tools for people to use,so it is very important that theusers of these tools are alsoequipped to use these tools, andthat should start with the appre-ciation of what these tools coulddo. The fact is, there should ac-tually be manual systems inplace. If there are no manual sys-tems, there is nothing to comput-erize.

Due to the response that I gotfrom my offer to help, I am goingto make sure that we could sus-tain this upgrade program assoon as we start it. Yes you readme right; this is really just a pro-gram to upgrade the quality ofgovernance in the LGUs, down tothe lowest level of the barangay.I think however that the key tothe sustainability will be thepeople, the people who will usethese systems, and the peoplewho will maintain these.

Having identified people asthe key, I will now talk to the or-ganizations that will be helpingus in this upgrade program, mak-ing sure that the time tested bal-ance of resources in computeriza-tion will be in place, referring tothe balance of manpower, infra-

They oppose scrubbing 2010elections, martial law or panickycharter change. They scoffed atthe idea of installing Ms. Arroyoas caudillo in a “transition revo-lutionary government”.

Security Advisor NorbertoGonzales peddled the transitoryjunta idea to the Supreme Courtchief justice. But Justice ReynatoPuno rebuffed him and, by impli-cation, Gonzales’ shadowy prin-cipal — the President.

How deeply do Fil-Americansfeel about these issues? Scientificstudies are few and far between.Kids here are like youngstersback home. They have no memo-ries of martial law. Their worldis of anchored freedoms. A des-aparecido, like Jonas Burgos, isbeyond them.

Ranks of those who foughtMarcos are thinning. Those who

sign up with the Overseas Absen-tee Voting Secretariat are few butarticulate. Ex-defense secretaryAvelino Cruz’s July 22 warning, before the Integrated Bar, how-ever, stoked concerns of many.

Leading presidential aspirantsvow “to prosecute President Ar-royo and First Gentleman MikeArroyo after she steps down,”Cruz noted. A president, whostays too long, is tempted to re-sist leaving. She fears losing con-stitutional immunity. What aboutthe First Gentleman’s de-factoimmunity? Cruz didn’t delve intothat.

Will the President snip termsfor today’s heads of key ArmedForces services?, Cruz asked. That’d “pave the way for the riseof PMA Class of 1978. They could“run the security apparatustasked to secure the 2010 elec-tions?”

Armed Forces leaders assureus PMA class 1978 will be spit n’polish professionals. Did they for-get the “Rolex 12”? Or MilitaryCommission No 1?

ALTHOUGH it ranks secondonly to chicken for egg and meatproduction, duck is also an impor-tant sub sector of the Philippinepoultry industry. It provides em-ployment and income-generatingopportunities for Filipinos, par-ticularly those in the rural andmarginal areas.

Among the avian species, ducks are considered the mostadaptable because they thrivewell on almost all kinds of envi-ronmental conditions. They needsimple, less expensive, and non-elaborate housing and rearingfacilities.

Ducks can be fed a variety offoods, such as rice, cassava, copra, corn and fruits; they have thenatural tendency on foraging ongreen legumes, algae, aquaticweeds, fungi, snails, earthworms, maggots and insects, which re-duce feed cost. They can also beused to control golden applesnails, which serve as pest to riceplants in some parts of the coun-try.

And, since they live longerthan chicken, farmers can al-ready make a profit in the secondyear of laying (the Mallard duckor itik lays an average of 250 eggsin one year of laying). Anotheradvantage is the longer intervalrequired for the replacement ofstock.

Duck production is one of themost profitable livestock indus-tries in the Philippines mainlybecause of its egg which can bemarketed through differentchannels. But one disadvantageof duck eggs is that the have afishy odor and flavor which mostpeople don’t like. This is the rea-son why most duck eggs are pro-cessed into two major Filipinodelicacies: balut (a fertilized eggwith a nearly-developed embryoinside that is boiled and eaten inthe shell) and salted egg (itlog namaalat).

Although balut is very popu-lar not only in the Philippines but

in other parts of the world as well, salted egg is now well accepted byconsumers. In fact, it is a com-mon feature in Filipino diningtable especially during breakfast. It can be eaten along or withsteamed rice or mixed in saladstyle with diced tomatoes and on-ions.

Salted egg is also used as aningredient in pastries and top-pings on breads and other bak-ery products, especially bibingka. In China (where it is eaten withcongee), the yolk of salted egg ishighly prized as it is used inmooncakes to symbolize themoon.

Eggs contain nutrients essen-tial to our body’s growth and de-velopment. Salted egg is packedwith nutrients. Compared tofresh egg, balut, penoy, or centuryegg, salted egg is highest in cal-cium (120 milligrams), carbohy-drates (4.4 milligrams), ash (202milligrams), and thiamin (0.74milligram).

So popular is salted egg thatFilipinos who are now living orworking abroad are looking for it.A study conducted by Dr. JovitaM. Datuin, of the Don MarianoMarcos State University showedthe Philippines is already export-ing processed duck products in-cluding salted eggs to Kuwait,Arabia, Peninsula, Bahrain, andeven the Trust Territory in thePacific Islands.

Traditionally, salted eggs aremade from duck eggs and couldtake up to 3 weeks to prepare. They may be processed using asalt and brine solution, or saltand clay. In brine solution, themixing proportion is one and one-fourth cups of table salt dissolvedin one liter of water.

Salted egg makers boil thewater with salt. After boiling, they allow the solution to cool. Then, they pour it over the duckeggs in a container until all theeggs are submerged. They then

Atty. By the way, hi! kay Atty.Marissa. More power din.

Nariritoang sinasabi ng pangalawang talatang Art. 213 ng Family Code: No childunder seven years of age shall beseparated from the mother, unless thecourt finds compelling reasons to or-der otherwise.

[email protected]: Maraming salamat at

structure and content. In the response that I got, it became even clearer to methat the priority of which function or service to focus onwill really depend on the prime movers of the upgradeprograms in each locality. Some of those who respondedhave identified the primary and secondary schools, whileothers have identified health centers and computer cen-ters.

For those who are reading my column for the first time,I would like to say again that my offer was to teach localcommunities what it takes to upgrade their local publicservice delivery systems. The plan is for them to solicitold computers from local and foreign sources. I will startby teaching them how to re-format these old machinesby installing new Linux operating systems. I will also helpthem look for free applications software.

The use of Linux is really nothing new. What is new isthat new versions of Linux have come up, making it prac-tically user friendly. As a matter of fact, Google will sooncome up with a version that is still Linux, but will betweaked to make it more seamless with the popular searchengine.

The choice of connecting these upgraded machines tothe Internet should also be the decision of the local primemovers. Nowadays however, it is not very difficult to con-nect any machine to the Internet, old or new. In my pre-vious column, I suggested that local communities shouldinterconnect their computers so that they could buildtheir own Virtual Private Networks or VPNs.

Technically speaking, an Intranet is just one of theapplications that could be run within a VPN. Over theyears however, these two terms have become synonymous. In layman terms, an Intranet is in effect a private net-work within another network such as the Internet.

Looking at the long term, it would be good to plan forlocal Intranets that could eventually connect to theInternet in general, and to the Intranets of national gov-ernment agencies in particular, for upgraded connectiv-ity.

The other constitutional path, theimpeachment process, was unfortu-nately cut short. There went the onlylawful way to evaluate forms of evi-dence of electoral fraud allegedly com-mitted by or in behalf of the President, which cast serious doubt on the legiti-macy of her mandate.

Today we celebrate the feast of

Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary. We all know that October is also des-ignated as the month of the HolyRosary. Let us all pray the rosary ev-ery day for peace in our country andin the whole world.

Ever since the imprisonment ofNinoy during martial rule, the rosaryhas become my favorite prayer. I be-lieve that praying the rosary everyday has helped me through my mostdifficult times, as in the time ofNinoy’s assassination and in thetimes of the coup attempts against myadministration. My day is not com-plete if I do not pray the rosary and Itry my very best to pray four rosa-ries a day.

Thank you again for inviting meto pray with all of you. Let us prayfor each other and ask Our BlessedMother to intercede for us with herDivine Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Magandang gabi at marami pongsalamat!

from Page 1into the other letters that I have to answer, I do my let-ters myself.

I have been chairperson [of the Benigno S. Aquino, Jr.Foundation] from the very beginning since 1983 and Icontinue to be that. We had put up the Aquino Center inTarlac. … So the idea first of all was to make sure thatpeople will not forget Ninoy and our very concern, espe-cially after his assassination, that people would get tothe truth. Because in the beginning, the Marcos dicta-torship was saying that it was Galman who shot Ninoy,so we want to have everything documented and also therole of People Power in the restoration of democracy …

… Then, after my presidency … well, exactly a yearafter my presidency, I said that we would like to put upan Aquino Center, so that was in 1993 when I firstlaunched the campaign. And we were finally able to in-augurate in 2001, so it took me eight years to go around,to solicit funding and … anyway I’m very happy that I’vebeen able to do this, not only for Ninoy’s sake and mysake, but more importantly for our young people to knowabout our history. And also, I always tell them that Ninoywas ready to offer his all for the country and it was justnot a matter of … of words but he did it, I mean he cameback, even though there was much risk to his life, and infact, he was killed. But, then for my part I vowed that Iwould continue his work. And so, I hope that all of usFilipinos will try to look within ourselves and find outwhat it is that we are asked to do or we feel we can do forour country. In other words, I want people to know …nobody’s excused, if you are Filipino, you do somethingfor your country. You don’t have to die for the countrybut there are so many things that you can do and youdon’t wait for the country. Kamukha nung kay John F.Kennedy, “Ask not what your country can do for you, butwhat you can do for your country.”

Learning how to paintWell, I started painting in 1996. I like painting except

I know my limitations. Anyway, I visited a friend of mine,si Marites Lopez, and she invited me to have a look-seeat their painting lesson in her house. At that time, theywere already two years into painting so, of course, I wassaying, “Oh, no way can I join this group …” They reallyseem to me as having so much talent but then she said,“No, no. Our teacher is very patient and he’ll be able toteach you.” And she was telling me, “Everybody canpaint.” Of course, I wasn’t sure about that. But anyway,it was my oldest daughter Ballsy who told me, “Mom, goahead. Anyway, with your name your painting willamount to something.” So I did, and I organized a group… we were about 10 in the beginning. We’d have lessonsevery Wednesdays, three hours each time, and we had ayoung teacher, Jeffrey Consumo, who didn’t even takeformal lessons but he was so patient, and I think thathelped, and very encouraging. And for my first lesson, Iwas able to finish a painting in three hours, and I wasjust so amazed and I was happy. And so I took lessonsfrom him for three years but since that time I’ve beendoing it on my own and I tried different things. As I said,I’m lucky I have a name. But normally, it’s the other wayaround. Artists really struggle hard in order to have aname. So I’m doing it backwards. Start with the name, and then do the paintings.

… There are days when everything comes easy, and itcomes on the way you’d like it too. But, there are dayswhen you’re not too happy. But anyway, I’m really grate-ful to my teacher that because of him I’ve been able to dothese paintings and I give them as gifts, well … first, tothe donors of the Aquino Foundation, and then to peoplewho have everything, like when President Kim Dae Jungwas elected, for his inauguration as president I gave hima painting. George Schultz who used to be Secretary ofState, because he was so good to me when I was presi-dent, I gave him a painting when he got married for thesecond time. To the Sultan of Brunei, I told him, I knowyou have everything, you manage a state. And then hesaid, “But I don’t have a Cory Aquino painting, yaaah….” So that made me feel good. Then, when I’m ninangfor weddings, so that’s what I give. And one of myinaanaks was joking and said, “Can this be retroactivefor the time that you have … you were ninang but youdidn’t know how to paint yet. So I said, I have to thinkabout that.

… I like paintings and it’s something that I thought Icould never do. But, apparently, all of us can paint. Whocares whether it’s a masterpiece or not!

Childhood dream and being privateI wanted to be a teacher. … It’s just when I got mar-

ried I knew Ninoy, you know, was aiming for that (thepresidency) and that he really loved politics and he was apublic person. I’m really a private person. I value my pri-vacy, in fact, I still value my privacy. Once, first, whenNinoy was imprisoned it was a incumbent for me to havea more public stance.

Cory as a wifeWell, I always say that Ninoy and I were able to bring

the best in each other. And I think that’s all that’s neces-sary for a married couple: To try to bring out the best ineach other.

Cory as a motherWell, you ask my children, I think they’re very happy

with the way I brought them up. I certainly spent muchtime with them and I was a full-time wife and mother. Ofcourse there were times that it was boring pero that wasmy commitment when I got married: That I vowed that Iwould be a good wife and mother.

NinoyWell, anyway, people ask when we first met. Ok, the

earliest I remember was we were both nine years old.You must remember Ninoy and I both came from Tarlac, both the Aquinos and Cojuangcos were and are in poli-tics. My father was congressman on the first district of

Tita Cory: In her own words

The Author with the late President

Tarlac and Ninoy’s father was congressman of the sec-ond district. It was inevitable that we would meet. Infact, my first cousin married the older brother of Ninoy, and my father was the Godfather of Lupita Aquino(Kashiwahara). So, inevitable ’yon. We met, I rememberit was the birthday of Ninoy’s father and nung araw fami-familia kung magpunta … so my parents took all of usthere. … And that was it, and I didn’t see him again ... Iwent to the United States to study when I was 13. So Ididn’t get to see him until I was 16, when we came backfor a vacation.

… I have to say, before Martial Law Ninoy’s worldwas all politics and ... well, that was the style then, nabahala ang mother. But Ninoy, I would insist that at leastwe would go to mass together every Sunday and that wewould go out for lunch or dinner at a Chinese restaurantin Chinatown. Nung araw wala pa itong mga classy Chi-nese restaurants. And then we go to a movie with thechildren. And then once a year, or twice a year, we go toHong Kong. So that would be the treat na Ninoy wouldtake all of us and that would be the time that we wouldat least have time for each other.

… We enjoyed yung Moonlight Serenade. … It was aGlenn Miller thing. … Miller had an orchestra or a bandand it was more for the music rather than for the lyricsthat we liked it. At that time, nung hindi pa kami kasal,it was very popular in the Philippines ... the Glenn MidlerStory had been shown and everytime they play that wereally danced to the tune.

Incident with young NinoyActually, we had come from a movie and, you know, at

that time I got my chaperone. So my chaperone was myolder sister Josephine. So we were driving on EDSA,which was Highway 54 before, and this had happenedparang two or three months, or maybe a month, afterNinoy had worked for the surrender of Luis Taruc. So wewere on Highway 54 and suddenly there was a jeep com-ing from the ricefields — on both sides nung araw mayricefields d’yan sa Highway 54 — just bumped us. So thecar door flew open. My sister was thrown out first ... thenI fell out. And my sister at that time was in fact threemonths pregnant. She lost her baby. We were taken tothe hospital, sa Lourdes Hospital, by an American whohad played golf. Kasi I couldn’t get up and because, youknow, you’re thrown out and then you just land flat onyour back. Ninoy was not hurt because he was holdingon to the wheel. I stayed overnight in the hospital. Luck-ily there were no injuries, I mean, no major injuries, butI was black and blue all over and my older brother said,“Cory, you have to go to Baguio tomorrow” because I wasreally expected by my parents to go to Baguio but I askedif we could go the following day because my younger sis-ter and I will go to a party. And, of course, with Ninoy. Iwanted to stay behind for that but of course we’d still goto the movies before going to the party. So in spite of myfeeling — whooo! — really bad and the long ride fromManila to Baguio I went and when we got there mymother was really furious and she was telling Ninoy,“From now on Cory will not ride in your car, she’ll justride in our car! And that was the first time I saw Ninoyreally scared and, yeah, because he knew while it wasn’tdirectly his fault but the fact is that we were in his car.

Her U.S. Congress speech[After People Power, President Cory’s speech was citedas one of the best speeches ever heard in that augustchamber.]

Actually, the speaker who said that was Speaker TipO’Neill. I’m sorry, I may sound like I’m bragging but, anyway, it doesn’t happen often that after I finished myspeech, Senator Dole said, “Mrs. President, you’ve hitthe home run …” So I said, “I hope the bases wereloaded!” And he was so surprised and he mentioned thisto the media people there, so it was written about andthey said I’m knowledgeable on baseball! And that after-noon after my speech, the House of Representatives votedto give $200 million to the Philippines as assistance. Ittook some time for the Senate to approve it but they did.So again Senator Dole was quoted as having said, “Thisis the biggest honorarium ever.” But anyway, I was happythat I could do that and that really the wonderful partwas I was never … I was never nervous, and I was say-ing, “My God! This is the first time I’m doing this andwhy wasn’t I nervous. It helped that the Speaker wasfrom Massachusetts and parang he considered me siguroa constituent or what ’cause we’ve lived in Boston. Plus

the fact that two years before I became president, we wereboth given honorary doctorates in Stonehill College whichis in Massachusetts. So parang … we’re friends, ok! ButI was really happy I could do this for our country.

“Cory Magic”Well, I don’t know. Alam mo matanda na tayo, and

then for the little kids, you know. This is what, I guess, reminds me to be humble, because when I see them, youknow, anywhere, shopping or whatever, then the momsalways say, “Siya ang mommy ni Kris Aquino.” And sabiko, ok! Oo, so I just say na what for the little kids, howthey know me. Oo. Until they go to school. … Like let metell you this, my youngest grandchild, she’s almost seven. She goes to school in Poveda and one day, — every Sun-day they come to my house for lunch — she said, “Lola, you know, my classmate her grandfather is SenatorFlavier!” And parang she was so impressed ano. Sabi ko,“Teka muna. Sabihin mo … sabihin mo dun sa kaklasemo that YOUR grandmother …” But then, my daughterwas explainin’, “Mom, kasi because she was old enoughto repeat …” Hindi ba yung there was a song about andyou repeat all the names of the senatorial candidates andshe has memorized them. So, Flavier stuck in her headand to meet the granddaughter parang, “Wow!” So I hadto tell her, “Sabihin mo …”

After the presidency[Why did Cory continuously serve the country after thepresidency?]

Well, so many things. Well, first I’m so glad that I pray, and so many people pray for me and with me and I knowthat I could not have done any of these things if it werenot for prayer. So when people ask me na parang youseem to be happy, sabi ko, “I think, I hope I’ll continue tohave that inner peace,” na I’ve come to this stage na andI hope that I would be able to continue doing things forour country, and hopefully, to be a source of inspirationnot only for women but also for men that all of us can dosomething. Like I was just a housewife before and I leftall of these public acts to Ninoy, but the time came whenhe could not do that because he’s imprisoned. So it wasincumbent upon me to at least do my share.

How she wanted people to remember NinoyWell first, I’m glad that in school, even in grade school,

the students read about Ninoy and they know aboutNinoy. But more than just that, I want them to knowthat Ninoy, first of all, was so proud to be a Filipino. Andwhen we were living in the States people were just amazedthat we never applied for permanent residence and thatwhen we went there we knew it was temporary and thatwe would come back here. But more importantly, I thinkNinoy was ready to sacrifice everything for the sake ofhis country. So I hope this is what people will rememberabout him and will try to maybe even do better than whathe did.

How she wants to be remembered by historyWell, first of all, I’d like to be remembered for having

helped in the restoration of our democracy. For you youngpeople who didn’t know what it was like living underMartial Law, maybe it will not mean as much. But whenyou see other countries still not, you know, enjoying free-dom, then you would have an idea or a sense of what itwas like here before. Where anybody would just be ar-rested without any charges, put into prison and somewould be tortured, and some were never seen again. Imean people as young as you.

Tita Cory’s challenge to all young peopleWhat I would like from you is that you would try your

best to find out what it is that our country needs of you. Imean, all of us will have different things … to do but eachone of us can do something to better life in our country.

I hope that the great lessons and legacies of the life andwords of the former president continue to live in ourhearts long after she’s gone. Let’s bring and accompanyher to her rest as a people, as she joined with our strugglewhen we needed a leader who would lead us back to free-dom and democracy.— Michael Charleston B. ment of DeLa Salle University, while working on a master’sdegree in history at the University of the Philippines, Diliman. He is also the vice president of the Philippine Historical As-sociation.

GMA’s 8th State Of the Nation AddressFollowing is the full text of the State Of the NationAddress President Arroyo delivered on July 27, 2009at the Batasan Pambansa in Quezon City.— Editor

THANK you, Speaker Nograles, Senate PresidentEnrile, Senators, Representatives, Vice President deCastro, President Ramos, Chief Justice Puno, Ambas-sadors, friends:

The past twelve months have been a year for thehistory books. Financial meltdown in the West spreadthroughout the world...

Tens of millions lost their jobs; billions across theglobe have been hurt—the poor always harder than therich. No one was spared....

It has affected us already. But the story of the Phil-ippines in 2008 is that the country weathered a succes-sion of global crises in fuel, in food, then in finance andfinally the economy in a global recession, never losingfocus and with economic fundamentals intact...

A few days ago, Moody’s has just announced theupgrade of our credit rating, citing the resilience of oureconomy. The state of our nation is a strongeconomy. Good news for our people, bad news for ourcritics...

I did not become President to be popular. To work,to lead, to protect and preserve our country, our people, that is why I became President. When my father left thePresidency, we were second to Japan. I want our Re-public to be ready for the first world in 20 years...

Towards that vision, we made key reforms. Our eco-nomic plan centers on putting people first. New tax revenues wereput in place to help pay for better healthcare, more roads,a strong education system. Housing policies were de-signed to lift up our poorest citizens so they can liveand raise a family with dignity. Ang ating mga puhunansa agrikultura ay naglalayong kilalanin ang ating mgamagsasaka bilang backbone ng ating bansa, at bigyansila ng mga modernong kagamitan to feed our nationand feed their own family....

Had we listened to the critics of those policies, hadwe not braced ourselves for the crisis that came, hadwe taken the easy road much preferred by politicianseyeing elections, this country would be flat on its back.It would take twice the effort just to get it back again onits feet—to where we are now because we took the re-sponsibility and paid the political price of doing the rightthing. For standing with me and doing the right thing, thank you, Congress...

The strong, bitter and unpopular revenue measuresof the past few years have spared our country the worstof the global financial shocks. They gave us the re-sources to stimulate the economy. Nabigyan nila angpinakamalaking pagtaas ng IRA ng mga LGU na P40billion itong taon, imparting strength throughout the coun-try and at every level of government...

Compared to the past, we have built more and bet-ter infrastructure, including those started by others butleft unfinished. The Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway isa prime example of building better roads. It createswealth as the flagship of the Subic-Clark corridor.

We have built airports of international standard, up-graded domestic airports, built seaports and the ROROsystem. I ask Congress for a Philippine Transport Se-curity Authority Law....

Some say that after this SONA, it will be all politics.Sorry, but there’s more work....

We need to amend the Common-wealth-era Public Service Law. And we need to do itnow....

Kung noong nakaraan, lumakas ang electronics, today we are creating wealth by developing the BPOand tourism sectors as additional engines of growth.Electronics and other manufactured exports rise andfall in accordance with the state of the world economy. But BPO remains resilient. With earnings of $6 billionand employment of 600,000, the BPO phenomenonspeaks eloquently of our competitiveness and produc-tivity. Let us have a Department of ICT....

In the last four years tourism almost doubled. It isnow a $5 billion industry...

Our reforms gave us the resources to protect ourpeople, our financial system and our economy from theworst of shocks that the best in the west failed to antici-pate....

They gave us the resources to do reforms parapalawakin ang suportang panlipunan and enhancespending power....For helping e raise salaries throughjoint resolution, thank you Congress.

Cash handouts give the most immediate relief andproduce the widest stimulating effect. Nakikinabangang 700,000 na pinakamahihirap na pamilya saprogramang Pantawid Pamilya.

Our preference is to invest in projects with the samestimulus effects but also with long-term contributions tonational progress....

Napapanahon dahil it willunfreeze the rural property market.

Our average inflation is the lowest since 1966. LastJune, it dropped to 1.5%. Paano nakamit ito? Properpolicies lowered interest rates, which lowered costs tobusiness and consumers.

Congratulations, Tarnati. We will help more fisherfolkshift to fish farming with a budget of P1 billion...

Our efforts prod-ded the pharmaceutical companies to come up with low-cost generics and brands like RiteMed. I supported thetough version of the House of the Cheaper MedicineLaw. I supported it over the weak version of my critics. The result: the drug companies volunteered to bringdown drug prices, slashing by half the prices of 16 drugs.Thank you, Congressman Cua, Alvarez, Biron andLocsin....

Pursuant to law, I am placing other drugs under amaximum retail price. To those who want to be Presi-dent, this advice: If you want something done, do it hard,do it well. Don’t pussyfoot. Just do it. Don’t say bad wordsin public.

EPIRA dismantledmonopoly. But minana natin iyong power purchaseagreements under preceding administrations, so hindipa natin makuha iyong buong intended effect. Thenext generation will benefit from low prices from ourEPIRA. Thank you...

We increased indigenous energy from48% to 58%. The huge re-duction in fossil fuel is the biggest proof of energy inde-pendence and environmental responsibility. Further re-duction will come with the implementation of the Re-newable Energy Act...and the Biofuels Act....again, thankyou.

The next generation will also benefit from our lowerpublic debt to GDP ratio. It declined from 78% in 2000to 55% in 2008. We cut in half the debt of governmentcorporations from 15% to 7. Likewise foreign debt from73% to 32%. Kung meron man tayong malaking kaawayna tinalo, walang iba kundi ang utang, iyong foreign debt.Past administrations conjured the demon of foreign debt.We exorcised it....

The market grows economies. A free market, not afree-for-all...

To that end, we improved our banking system tocomplement its inherent conservatism. The BangkoSentral has been prudent. Thank you, GovernorTetangco, for being so effective. The BSP will be evenmore effective if Congress will amend its Charter....

We worked on the Special Purpose Vehicle Act, re-ducing non-performing loans from 18% to 4% and im-proving loan-deposit ratios....

Our new Securitization Law did not encourage therecklessness that brought down giant banks and insur-ance companies elsewhere and laid their economies towaste. In fact, it monitors and regulates the new-fangledfinancial schemes. Thank you, Congress....

We will work to increase tax effort through improvedcollections and new sin taxes to further our capacity toreduce poverty and pursue growth. Revenue enhance-ment must come from the Department of Finance plug-ging leaks and catching tax and customs cheats. I callon tax-paying citizens and tax-paying businesses: helpthe BIR and Customs spot those cheats…

Taxes should come from alcohol and tobacco andnot from books. Tax hazards to lungs and livers, do nottax minds.

Pardon my partiality for the teaching profession. I

was a teacher....Kaya namuhunan tayo ng malaki sa edukasyon at

mabuting buhay, the great equalizer that allows everyyoung Filipino a chance to realize their dreams...Nagtayo tayo ng 95,000 na silid-aralan, nagdagdag ng60,000 na guro, naglaan ng P1.5 billion para sa teachertraining, especially for 100,000 English teachers.

We assist financially half of all students in privatehigh schools....

We have provided 600,000 college and post-gradu-ate scholarships. One of them Mylene Amerol-Macumbal, finished Accounting at MSU-IIT, went to lawschool, and placed second in the last bar exams—thefirst Muslim woman bar topnotcher. Congratulations...

In technical education and skills training, we haveinvested three times that of three previous administra-tions combined. Now, as an independent contractor and lecturer for tran-scriptions in Davao, kumikita siya ng P18,000 bawatbuwan. Good job.

The Presidential Task Force on Education headedby Jesuit educator Father Bienvenido Nebres has comeout with the Main Education Highway towards a Knowl-edge-Based Economy. It envisions seamless educationfrom basic to vocational school or college....

It seeks to mainstream early childhood developmentin basic education. Our children are our most cherishedpossession. In their early years we must make sure theyget a healthy start in life. They must receive the rightfood for a healthy body, the right education for a brightand inquiring mind—and the equal opportunity for ameaningful job....

For college admission, the Task Force recommendsmandatory Scholastic Aptitude Tests. It also recom-mends that private higher education institutions andstate universities and colleges should be harmonized. Italso recommends that CHED will oversee of local uni-versities and colleges. For professions seeking interna-tional recognition—engineering, architecture, accoun-tancy, pharmacy and physical therapy—it recommendsradical reform: 10 years of basic education, two yearsof pre-university, three years of university...

Our educational system should make the Filipino fitnot just for whatever jobs happen to be on offer today, but also for whatever economic challenge life will throwin their way....

I know that this is not a sacrifice joyfully borne. Thisis work where it can be found—in faraway places, amongstrangers with different cultures. It is lonely work, it isvery hard work....

Kaya nagsisikap tayong lumikha ng mga trabahongmaganda ang bayad dito sa atin so that overseas workwill just be a career choice, not the only option for ahardworking Filipino in search of a better life...

Meanwhile, we should make their sacrifices worth-while. That means strongerconsumer protection for OFWs investing in property andproducts back home.

Pinuno nila angisang buong eroplano at umuwi kasama ko....Mula sa ating State Visit to Spain, it has become ourbiggest European donor.

For overseas workers, maramingsalamat.

Our vigorous international engagement has helpedbring in foreign investment. Net foreign direct invest-ments multiplied 15 times during our administration.Kasama ng ating mga Together with our OFWs, theymore than doubled our foreign exchange reserves.Pinalakas ang ating piso at naiwasan ang lubhangpagtaasng presyo. They upgraded our credit becauseour reserves grew by $3 billion while those of our peershave shrunk.....

Our international engagement has also correctedhistorical injustice. The day we visited Washington,Senator Daniel Inouye successfully sponsored benefitsfor our veterans as part of America’s fiscal stimulus pack-age...

I have accepted the invitation of President Obamato be the first Southeast Asian leader to meet him at the

White House, this week....That he sought us the Philippines testifies to our

strong and deep ties....High on our agenda will be peace and security is-

sues. Terrorism: how to meet it, how to end it, how toaddress its roots in injustice and prejudice—and mostand always how to protect lives....

We will also discuss nuclear non-proliferation. ThePhilippines will chair the review of the nuclear weaponsnon-proliferation Treaty in New York in May 2010. Thesuccess of the talks will be a major diplomatic achieve-ment for us....

There is a range of other issues we will discuss, including the global challenge of climate change, espe-cially the threat to countries with long coastlines. Andthere is the global recession, its worse impact on poorpeople, and the options that can spare them from theworst.

In 2008 up to the first quarter of 2009 we stoodamong only a few economies in Asia-Pacific that didnot shrink. Compare this in 2001, when some of mycurrent critics were driven out by people power, Asiawas then surging but our country was on the brink ofbankruptcy....

Since then, our economy has posted uninterruptedgrowth for 33 quarters; more than doubled its size from$76 billion to $186 billion. The average GDP growth from2001 to the first quarter of 2009 is the highest in 43years.

GNP per capita rose from a Third World$967 to $2,051. Lumikha tayo ng walong milyongtrabaho, an average of a million per year, much, muchmore than at any other time....

In sum:1. We have a strong economy in a strong fiscal po-

sition to withstand political shocks....2. We built new modern infrastructure and completed

unfinished ones.3. The economy is more fair to the poor than ever

before....4. We are building a sound base for the next gen-

eration....5. International authorities have taken notice that

we are safer from environmental degradation and man-made disasters....

As a country in the path of typhoons and in the Pa-cific Rim of Fire, we must be as prepared as the latesttechnology permits to anticipate natural calamities whenthat is possible; to extend immediate and effective reliefwhen it is not….The mapping of flood- and landslide-prone areas is almost complete. Early warning, fore-casting and monitoring systems have been improved, with weather tracking facilities in Subic, Tagaytay,Mactan, Mindanao, Pampanga....

We have worked on flood control infrastructure likethose for Pinatubo, Agno, Laoag, and Abucay, whichwill pump the run off waters from Quezon City and Tondoflooding Sampaloc. This will help relieve hundreds ofhectares in this old city of its age-old woe....

The victims of typhoon Frank in Panay should re-ceive their long-overdue assistance package. I ask Con-gress to pass the SNITS Law....

Nahulinoong 2006. She is now involved in an LGU-supportedhandicraft livelihood training of former rebels. We loveyou, Leah!

There is now a good prospect for peace talks bothwith both the Communist Party of the Philippines andthe MILF, with whom we are now on ceasefire....

We inherited an age-old conflict in Mindanao, exac-erbated by a politically popular but near-sighted policyof massive retaliation. This only provoked the other sideto continue the war....

There is nothing more that I would wish for thanpeace in Mindanao. It will be a blessing for all its people,Muslim, Christian and lumads. It will show other reli-giously divided communities that there can be commonground on which to live together in peace, harmony andcooperation that respects each other’s religious beliefs....

At sa lahat ng dako ng bansa, kailangan natingprotektahan an gating mamamayan kontra sa krimen— in their homes, in their neighborhoods, in their com-munities.

How shall crime be fought? Through the five pillarsof justice. We call on Congress to fund more policemenon the streets....

Real government is about looking beyond the vestedto the national interest, setting up the necessary condi-tions to enable the next, more enabled and more em-powered generation to achieve a country as prosper-ous, a people as content, as ours deserve to be....

The noisiest critics of constitutional reform tirelesslyand shamelessly attempted Cha-Cha when they thoughtthey could take advantage of a shift in the form of gov-ernment. Now that they feel they cannot benefit from it,they oppose it.

As the process of fundamental political reform be-gins, let us address the highest exercise ofdemocracy...voting!

In 2001, I said we would finance fully automatedelections. We got it, thanks to Congress....

At the end of this speech I shall step down from thisstage...but not from the Presidency. My term does notend until next year. Until then, I will fight for the ordinaryFilipino. The nation comes first. There is much to do ashead of state—to the very last day....

A year is a long time. There are many perils that we must stillguard against....

A man-made calamity is already upon us, global inscale. As I said earlier, so far we have been spared itsworst effects but we cannot be complacent. We onlyknow that we have generated more resources on whichto draw, and thereby created options we could take.Thank God we did not let our critics stop us....

As the campaign unfolds and the candidates taketo the airwaves, I ask them to talk more about how theywill build up the nation rather than tear down their oppo-nents. Our candidates must understand the complexi-ties of our government and what it takes to move thecountry forward. Give the electorate real choices andnot just sweet talk....

Meanwhile, I will keep a steady hand on the tiller, keeping the ship of state away from the shallows someprefer, and steering it straight on the course I set in2001....

These qualities are epitomized in someone like MannyPacquiao....Manny trained tirelessly, by the book, withiron discipline, with the certain knowledge that he hadto fight himself, his weaknesses first, before he couldbeat his opponent. That was the way to clinch his victo-ries and his ultimate title: ang pinakadakilang boksingerosa kasaysayan..........Mabuhay ka, Manny!

However much a President wishes it, a national prob-lem cannot be knocked out with a single punch. A Presi-dent must work with the problem as much as against it,and turn it into a solution if I can…

There isn’t a day I do not work at my job or a wakingmoment when I do not think through a work-related prob-lem. Even my critics cannot begrudge the long hours Iput in. Our people deserve-a-government that works justas hard as they do...

A President must be on the job 24/7, ready for anycontingency, any crisis, anywhere, anytime....

Everything right can be undone by even a singlewrong. Every step forward must be taken in the teeth ofpolitical pressures and economic constraints that couldpush you two steps back-if-you flinch and falter.. I havenot flinched, I have not faltered. Hindi ako umaatras sahamon....

And I have never done any of the things that havescared my worst critics so much. They are frightenedby their own shadows....

In the face of attempted coups, I issued emergencyproclamations just in case. But I was able to resolvethese military crises with the ordinary powers of my of-

Ipinagmalaki niya na, “in 2008 up to thefirst quarter of 2009, we stood among only afew economies in Asia Pacific that did notshrink.

Sinabi pa ni Mara Bautista na “sure shedid her best but her best is not enough. Sahusay ng credentials niya naging masmaganda marahil ang resulta, if she ruledwith the purest heart and noble intentions.”

Ayon kay Estrada, pawang “kasinunga-lingan ang State of the Nation Address niya,”at “kung sinu-sino pinatamaan.

Inayunan naman ito ni Bautista nanagsabing, “I am not an economist so thatfigures are not significant to me. Realityspeaks for itself. There are more poor peoplethese days.”

fice. My critics call it dictatorship. I call it determination....We know it as strong government....

But I never declared martial law, though they arerunning scared as if I did. In truth, what they are reallyafraid of is their weakness in the face of this self-imag-ined threat....

I say to them: do not tell us what we all know, thatdemocracy can be threatened. Tell us what you will dowhen it is attacked....

I know what to do:I know what to do, as I have shown, I will defend

democracy with arms when it is threatened by violence;with firmness when it is weakened by division; with lawand order where it is subverted by anarchy; and always,I will try to sustain it by wise policies of economicprogress, so that a democracy means not just an emptyliberty but a full life for all....

I never expressed the desire to extend myself be-yond my term. Many of those who accuse me of it triedto cling like nails to their posts....

I am accused of misgovernance. Many of those who

accuse me of it left me the problem of theirmisgovernance to solve. And we did it....

I am falsely accused, without proof, of using my of-fice for personal profit. Many of those who accuse meof it have lifestyles and spending habits that make themwalking proofs of that crime....

We can read their frustrations. They had the chanceto serve this good country and they blew it by servingthemselves....

Those who live in glass houses should cast nostones. Those who should be in jail should not threatenit, especially if they have been there....

Our administration, with the highest average rate ofgrowth, recording multiple increases in investments, withthe largest job creation in history, and which gets a creditupgrade at the height of a world recession, must bedoing something right, even if some of those cocoonedin corporate privilege refuse to recognize it....

Governance, however, is not about looking back andgetting even. It is about looking forward and givingmore—to the people who gave us the greatest, hardest

gift of all: the care of a country. From Bonifacio at Balintawak to Cory Aquino at

EDSA and up to today, we have struggled to bring powerto the people, and this country to the eminence it de-serves....

Today the Philippines is weathering well the stormthat is raging around the world. It is growing strongerwith the challenge. When the weather clears, as it will, there is no telling how much farther forward it can go.Believe in it. I believe...

We can and we must-march-forward-with-hope,optimism and determination.

We must come together, work together and walktogether toward the future.

And to the people of our good country, for allowingme to serve as your President, maraming salamat.Mabuhay ang Pilipinas.

keep the treated eggs in a cool place at room tempera-ture for 12 to 15 days.

The length of the treatment period depends on theuse or consumer preference. If the eggs are to be con-sumed immediately, 12 days in the brine solution is goodenough. But if the eggs will be stored for a long time, they are treated for at least 15 days.

The processors take the eggs out of the brine solutionand hard boil them. They add a few drops of granite foodcoloring during the boiling to impart a red color to theshells. The red color has become a permanent identifica-tion mark of salted eggs (which is why it is sometimescalled as itlog na pula).

Finally, the eggs are air-dried and stored in contain-ers where they can last for several months without spoil-ing. (Salting, if you care to know, lengthens the shelf lifeof eggs.)

The clay mixture is composed of two parts clay soiland one part table salt. The salted egg makers moistenthe clay (which are taken from ant hills or termitemounds) and gradually mix the salt to it until it becomemuddy.

The processors then coat selected and properly cleanedeggs with the clay mixture and arranged these in layersin earthen or wooden containers. They cover the contain-ers with cloth and keep these in a secluded place at roomtemperature.

The eggs are ready for cooking on the 15th day. Eggspreserved in clay develop an oily core in their yolk.

The salted egg makers scrape the clay off the eggs andwash off the remaining mud. Then, they boil the eggslike brine-treated ones.

Duck eggs that are processed into red salted eggs areeither fresh eggs collected from ducks without drakes orinfertile eggs. In addition, eggs that are cracked, rottenor containing embryo should not be used for salted eggs.

By the way, salted eggs can also be made from chickeneggs though the taste and texture will be somewhat dif-ferent, and the egg yolk will be less rich.

By the way, according to the Health Promotion Boardof Singapore, one salted duck egg yolk weighing about 70grams contains 359 milligrams of cholesterol. The rec-ommended cholesterol intake for a healthy diet shouldbe less than 300 milligrams a day. A single salted eggyolk exceeds the recommended cholesterol intake and iftaken regularly, there might be a greater risk of elevat-ing blood cholesterol level. However, many health expertsin the United States and in the rest of Asia believe not allthe cholesterol in an egg can be absorbed, thus the actualnegative impact is much less.

It sentenced Benigno Aquino to “death by musketry.PMA Class 71 became the “mailed fist” of the dicta-

torship, notes a Yale University study, “Closer ThanBrothers.” Five among 85 graduates were torturers. Sixwere murdered. Others were coup plotters. Look atPanfilo Lacson and Gregorio Honasan. And Jose SanMartin’s words ring in your ears: “How poor the countrythat must suffer gloriously triumphant generals.”

Retirements whittled down the Supreme Court ma-jority who thrashed Arroyo’s “People’s Initiative”, Cruznotes.“The Court will soon have all its justices appointedby one President.

Recall the Chief Justice who’d trot after Imelda Marcosholding her parasol. Among other things, that Court thensurrendered the power to rule on habeas corpus petitions.Benigno Aquino’s airport tarmac speech challenged thatcapitulation. But an assassin’s bullet beat him to it.

“The martial law bogey is being used to turn peopleagainst the government,” screamed everybody the Pal-ace press-ganged into service: from Senator Juan MiguelZubiri to Secretary Ronaldo Puno and presidential ad-viser Gabriel Claudio. “That was cheap of Cruz.”

Hypocrisy is unlike bread. There is never a short sup-ply. Thus, Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro purrs:“President Arroyo would not use her power for her ownpolitical gains. Take it from the “Brat Pack” bouncer forEduardo Cojunagco’s coconut levy. Juan Ponce Enrile

spark-plugged the “God Save the Queen” coups againstPresident Aquino. He now cites the Constitution he triedto scrap on limits of presidential terms.

President Aquino came to the U.S. and addressed ajoint session of the U.S. Congress. She led Asia’s first non-violent revolution, since Mahatma Ghandi’s marchagainst the Salt Tax. That example spiraled intoCzechoslovakia’s Velvet Revolt and Lebanon’s CedarRevolution, among others. With integrity unquestioned, she ensured peaceful transition of power.

President Arroyo comes as a diminished figure. She’llposture as “leader”. Indeed, U.S. and Philippine inter-ests coincide in areas like terror’s protracted conflict. Butlike Marcos and Estrada before her, she is necklaced bysleaze. There is a Faustian desperation for a little moretime.

But this Oval Office doesn’t work by the old “she-is-our-s.o.b.” rule. “No country is going to create wealth ifits leaders exploit the economy to enrich themselves, orpolice can be bought off by drug traffickers,” PresidentObama told Ghana’s Parliament.

“No business wants to invest in a place where the gov-ernment skims 20 percent off the top, or the head of thePort Authority is corrupt. No person wants to live in asociety where the rule of law gives way to the rule of bru-tality and bribery. That is not democracy, that is tyranny,And now is the time for it to end.”

MISA’T PANALANGIN — Sandaling nanahimik paramanalangin sina Fr. Romy Sasi at Gob.

lac noong 1896, ngunit na-nanatili hanggang ngayonang kanilang lumang ba-hay o ancestral house saMalolos.

Jose-lito “Jonjon” Mendoza.

“We prayed for the recov-ery of former PresidentCory Aquino because weowe a lot from her,” aniMendoza matapos angmisa.

— DINO BALABO
