MACARTHUR NEWS
The next General Meeting of the Macarthur Advancement & Development Association Inc.
Wednesday 13th July 7.30pm at the Macarthur Senior Citizens rooms
The papers and television news programmes have
been full of the current crisis in the CFA for about a
month now. CFA volunteers and the stations they
man are an integral part of country Victoria and the
heroism of the men and women of this organization
has been proved many times in the past. The current
situation became public because of demands made by
the United Firefighters Union in their current negotia-
tions for a new pay and conditions agreement.
Some of the demands would allow the union to
veto management decisions on operational matters
and also basic decisions on equipment purchase, right
down to minor decisions on supplies in stations. Paid
firefighters only operate out of stations in larger re-
gional towns and outer urban areas around Melbourne
and regional cities such as Geelong. To put this in
perspective, there are approximately 800 paid fire-
fighters and 60000 volunteers. It is absolutely beyond
comprehension that any union should be able to inter-
fere in day to day operational matters and have the
power of veto over the elected board and senior man-
agement staff of a Government Authority.
What does this all mean for the country towns and
particularly those of us who live in and around Mac-
arthur? On a day to day basis it won’t affect us at all.
For the volunteers of the CFA it is business as usual.
If a call comes in they will respond as they always
have, dropping everything to man the trucks and
attend fires or accidents as needed. In the longer term
they need us to support them. The Government is
determined to force the CFA board to accept the
conditions in the EBA so the fight is far from over.
Unfortunately, Lucinda Nolan, the CEO and Jane
Garrett (Emergency Services Minister), were forced
out of their positions. Both women stood firm and
refused to bow to pressure and sign off on the EBA.
The Board also stood firm and were sacked. Send a
letter or email to the Premier and new Emergency
Services Minister, James Merlino. Let them know
their support of the union is unacceptable. As a com-
munity we need to continue to apply pressure until
reason is restored.
Victorian communities have always supported the CFA, today they need us to stand with them more than ever.
The CFA in Crisis
Nancy Sparrow, a young 90,
shares a moment with a
guest at a party to celebrate
her birthday. Family and
friends turned out in force to
share the big day with Nancy
and, as expected, the
Sparrow clan put on a good
feed with a cake baked and
decorated by Nola to top off
the party. We hope you had
a great day Nancy and that
there are many more to
come!

WANTED: KINDER KIDS!!
ENROLMENTS NOW OPEN FOR
MACARTHUR KINDER 2017
Enrolments are now open for our 3 and 4 year old
programs in 2017. Please drop in to the kindergarten
to collect an enrolment form or call 55761296 to have
one posted to you.
The committee is currently reviewing our program
and we’re inviting input from current and prospective
parents to ensure we are delivering a model that best
suits our community.
At present our 4-year-old program runs three 5 hour
days a week from 8.45am to 1.45pm. We’d like to
hear from you if in 2017 you would prefer us to run
two 7.5 hour days per week (possibly 8.30am-
4.00pm) to fit in with work or other commitments?
Macarthur Kindergarten offers an engaging, interac-
tive and caring program which is unique in that chil-
dren are encouraged to engage with their local com-
munity and environment. Smaller classes mean that
children are given individual attention to help them
develop at their own pace. We also have a dedicated
and energetic kindergarten committee that is commit-
ted to keeping fees well below comparable services
(current 2016 fees are $185/term).
If you have or know of any kindergarten aged children in the area please contact us with your
thoughts on 0459 149 280.
Boosting your memory- A Naturopathic
perspective
Most of us have trouble finding the right word
sometimes or occasionally forget appointments, others may forget things more often and not re-member them at all. Memory loss could be a tem-
porary behavior which requires no medical treat-ment, to a more defined, subtle form of dementia, and to Alzheimer's, a form of degenerative disease
that requires medical attention. At least 1 in 10 Australians aged 65 and above are affected by dementia and Alzheimer's (Australian Institute of
Health and Welfare 2012 Dementia). Any persis-tent symptom warrants a medical check to rule out any underlying medical condition.
To cope with frequent memory loss such as
dementia and to avoid drastic memory deteriora-
tion, a diet that contains fish (high in DHA) and
soya (high in lecithin) will provide the nutrition
that the brain needs to maintain healthy brain cells.
Having 1 - 2 cups of freshly brewed coffee daily
may help to stimulate its function. Playing mind
games such as chess, crosswords & cultivating a
regular reading habit as well as being socially
active may help to actively maintain the brain
functions.
Holistically, relaxation therapy such as meditation,
classical music and taking a flower remedy pre-scribed by a Flower Therapist may also helpful in maintaining your memory and avoid deterioration.

EUMERALLA LANDCARE
NEWS
On 31st May we had a well-attended Landcare
meeting which was very encouraging. The group
has been inactive for several years prior to this.
The Landcare organization is a great one to be
in if you are interested in the land, the environ-
ment and how it all connects for us (people and
animals) to be able to exist in harmony. We can
enjoy what it has to offer, and learn the best ways
to protect it and thus pass it on to the next genera-
tion to do the same.
Our next meet will be on Tuesday 12th July at
Macarthur hotel at 7.30 pm. We would love to
have more local people as part of our group, so
come along with your ideas and questions. This is
for everyone, farmers and townsfolk!
ALL WELCOME
