    Participation in ancient Olympics

    Herodotus mentions:

"I happen to know, and I willdemonstrate in a subsequentchapter of this history, that thesedescendants of Perdiccas are, as

they themselves claim, of Greeknationality. This was, moreover, recognized by the managers of theOlympic games, on the occasionwhen Alexander wished to competeand his Greek competitors tried toexclude him on the ground that

foreigners were not allowed to takepart. Alexander, however, proved hisArgive descent, and so wasaccepted as a Greek and allowed toenter for the foot-race. He came inequal first".

Alexanders famous speech The speech of Alexander I, when he was

admitted to the Olympic games"Men of Athens...Had I not greatly at heart the commonwelfare of Hellas I should not have come totell you; but I am myself Hellene by descent, and I would not willingly see Hellas exchangefreedom for slavery....If you prosper in this war, forget not to do

something for my freedom; consider the risk Ihave run, out of zeal for the Hellenic cause, toacquaint you with what Mardonius intends, and to save you from being surprised by thebarbarians.I am Alexander of Macedon."(Herodotus, The Histories, 9.45)

    Asia

Alexander the Great managedto unite the many Greek citystates, such as Athens and

Sparta, under his rule and toconquer the Persian empire, including Egypt and lands asfar east as the fringes of India

Alexander's adoption of thestyles of government of theconquered territories was

accompanied by the spread ofGreek culture and learningthrough his vast empire

Although the empirefractured into multipleHellenic regimes shortly afterhis death, his conquests left alasting legacy, not least in thenew Greek-speaking citiesfounded across Persia'swestern territories, heraldingthe Hellenistic period.

    Map of Macedonia

The borders of Macedonia havechanged since ancient Macedon

Prior to its expansion under Philip II,the ancient kingdom of Macedonia,to which the modern region owes

its name, lay in its entirety withinthe current Greek province ofMacedonia

Geographically, the term Macedoniarefers to a broader region thatincludes portions of the territoriesof various Balkan countries (mainly

Greece, FYROM and Bulgaria). The greater part of geographical

Macedonia coincides with the areacovered by the ancient GreekMacedonia, which lies within theboundaries of modern Greece.

    Further background information

    FY

    RO

M is exercising a policy of irredentism andterritorial claims fuelled by the falsification ofhistory and the usurpation of Greece's historicaland national heritage

Historically, the Greek name Macedonia refers tothe state and civilisation of the ancientMacedonians, which beyond doubt is part ofGreece's national and historical heritage and bears

no relation whatsoever with the residents ofFYROM

The name issue originated in the aftermath of theSecond World War, when Josip Broz Tito separatedthe area then known as Vardar Banovina (nowFYROM) from Serbia, granting it the status of aRepublic within the new federal Yugoslavia, under

the name Socialist Republic of Macedonia, concurrently promoting the doctrine of a separateMacedonian Nation.

The reason for promoting Macedonianism inFYROM was Titos desire to gain access to theAegean Sea by cultivating the notion ofreunification of all Macedonian territories...

Name dispute Current recognized name by the UN: Former

    Yugoslovia Republic of Macedonia

    Self-recognized name: Republic of Macedonia

    Compromisable names: "New Macedonia",

    "U

pper Macedonia", "Slavo-Macedonia", "NovaMakedonija", "Macedonia (Skopje)" and so on.However, these had invariably fallen foul of theGreek position that no permanent formulaincorporating the term "Macedonia" isacceptable

Athens had counter-proposed the names "VardarRepublic" or "Republic of Skopje", but the

government and opposition parties in Skopje hadconsistently rejected any solution that eliminatesthe term "Macedonia" from the country's name.

Following these developments, Greece hasgradually revised its position and demonstratesits acceptance of a composite appellation, with ageographical qualifier, erga omnes (i.e. the

incorporation of the term "Macedonia" in thename, but with the use of a disambiguating namespecification, for international andintergovernmental use)

Greece states that FYROM should genuinelyrenounce the usurpation of historical andnational heritage of the Greek people
