East Central Machine & Tool Co, St. Clair, Missouri, is prepar-ing for its 30th anniversary and has recently installed a new FANUC a-C400ia RoboCut EDM machine.

The family-owned firm is a full-service tool & die shop with production stamping and produc-tion machining. The new FANUC EDM, purchased from McClain Tool and Technology, replaces an older machine. “The new EDM is a major improvement in efficiency and productivity,” stated Danny Moss, son of the founder. “We had purchased equipment from McClain before and have been pleased with their service. They have always treated us very fairly. The new FANUC can do so many things that we could not do before. The controls were so easy that our operator was up and running in a few days.” The new C400ia model features several enhancements including reduced wire usage and better energy efficiency.

Other equipment at East Cen-tral Machine includes CNC and manual mills/lathes, grinders and stamping presses up to 250-tons.

The firm’s seven employees operate in a 10,000-sq.-ft. facility. Materials worked with include tool steel, mild steel, stainless steels, aluminum, brass, and copper. In-dustries served include rail, energy distribution, agriculture, trucking, and commercial goods. As he con-sidered the firm’s 30-year history, Dan Moss, founder, said, “The keys to our success over the years has been hard work in bringing our customers parts and products to their market place, paying par-ticular attention to their quality

requirements and delivery. Having diversity and being able to adapt to an ever changing market place increases our chances for contin-ued success in the future.”

ISM-Kansas City, an affiliate of the Institute for Supply Manage-ment, held a meeting on April 16th at the headquarters of Ash Grove Cement Company in Lenexa, Kansas.

The featured speaker for the event was economist Chris Kuehl, managing director of Armada Corporate Intelligence. The firm provides strategic and business analysis and economic forecasting for corporate clients. He is also the chief economist for the Fabri-cators and Manufacturers Associa-tion.

Kuehl discussed global and national economic trends as well as those more local in nature. He emphasized that trying to rely on national numbers such as unem-ployment can be so diluted that they may not be of much use.

He spoke at length about the importance of growth for the U.S. economy. “The easiest way to deal with the debt and deficit is to grow,” commented Kuehl. He noted that our economy is driven

by small business and that the U.S. needs to make sure we do not have policies that limit small business-es.

MPI, a world leader in wax-room equipment, has donated a 25-ton wax injector to the manufacturing program at Pittsburg State University (PSU). The new state-of-the-art wax injection machine is being in-stalled in the metal casting lab at the Kansas Technol-ogy Center and is expected to be ready for operation in late May.

The donation fits with PSU’s mission to create a Center of Excellence in Metal Casting (CEMC). The goal is to develop a state-of-the-art laboratory which will produce top graduates in the metal casting indus-try.

Russ Rosmait, PSU Professor of Engineering Technology, said the injection press will be “fully in-tegrated” into the investment casting curriculum. The new equipment will bring real-world application to the classroom from tooling design and wax injection right on to final wax assembly.

Rosmait praised MPI for its generosity. “This is the type of industry-leading machine we’ve wanted for quite some time,” Rosmait said, “but its $160,000 price tag meant it was out of our reach financially. We’re incredibly fortunate and grateful that MPI

decided to invest so substantially in our program and donate this equipment to us.”

“The program at Pitt State is excellent and needs the best equipment to aid in training tomorrow’s lead-ers in Investment Casting. MPI has the best equipment, so when asked if I would contemplate making such a significant donation I considered it my responsibility to the industry,” says Bruce Phipps, President MPI, Inc.

PSU is a Foundry Educational Foundation (FEF) Certified school and is home to the only Investment Casting Institute (ICI) Certification program in the world. For more information visit www.pittstate.edu.

“Collecting more taxes than is absolutely necessary is legalized robbery.” – Calvin Coolidge, U.S. president Aug. 1923 - Mar. 1929

As our national debt mounts and our governments are exert-ing more power over our lives, it appears obvious we need leaders that will fight for fewer laws and regulations and less borrowing and spending.

With that in mind, some histo-rians are re-examining the 1920s and believe that Calvin Coolidge might offer some insight on how to handle today’s financial problems.

Amity Shales, author of The Forgotten Man, writes that while researching that book on the 1930s, she discovered our “for-gotten president:” “Silent Cal” Coolidge. Most presidential heros

have been generals or war leaders, but Coolidge was mainly a man of work, she says. “Coolidge was a minimalist president, an economic general of budgeting and tax cuts.”

“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Tal-ent will not; nothing is more com-mon than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Educa-tion will not; the world is full of educated failures. Persistence and determination alone are omnipo-tent.” - CC

In her book, Coolidge, Shales notes that under his administration: “the federal debt fell; the federal budget was always in surplus; unemployment was 5% or 3%; the top income tax rate came down by half, to 25%, and wages rose and interest rates came down so that the poor might borrow more easily.”

This wasn’t as easy as it sounds. After World War I, our na-tional debt was $27 billion, or nine times the pre-war level. Coolidge, and Harding, too, cut this figure to only $17.65 billion. By cutting tax-es, they caused economic growth which brought in surplus dollars for the government. Much of this happened because Coolidge was willing to be unpopular and his rather harsh upbringing allowed him to stick to his convictions.

“I have found it advisable not to give too much heed to what people say when I am trying to accomplish something of conse-quence. Invariably they proclaim it

can’t be done. I deem that the very best time to make the effort.” - CC

Coolidge was born on July 4, 1872 in Plymouth Notch, Vermont, where the family farmed some rocky acreage and ran a country store. His father served in the Ver-mont legislature, providing an in-sight into politics for this very shy son. His mother died when he was 12, and his sister six years later.

He graduated from Amherst College with honors, and entered law and politics in Northampton, Mass. Slowly, methodically, he went up the political ladder from councilman in Northampton to governor of Massachusetts. One of the most important lessons Coolidge learned early in life was to avoid debt...and he never forgot it.

“There is no dignity quite so impressive, and no one indepen-

dence quite so important as living within your means.” - CC

Coolidge may have been silent at times and a man of few words, but his success in college, law and politics came from his thorough research and his public speaking ability. The voters learned to trust this thoughtful, soft-spoken and un-pretentious man.

He once explained to Bernard Baruch why he often sat silently through interviews: “Well, Baruch, many times I say only ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to people. Even that is too much. It winds them up for 20 minutes more.”

According to The White House Historical Association: “At 2:30 on the morning of August 3, 1923, while visiting in Vermont, Calvin Coolidge received word that he was president. By the light of a kerosene lamp, his father, who was a notary public, administered the oath of office.” Warren G. Harding had died and left behind a scandal-ridden office.

Alfred E. Smith, a Democratic admirer of Coolidge, wrote that “His greatest task was to restore the dignity and prestige of the presidency when it had reached the lowest ebb in our history...in a time of extravagance and waste.”

“To live under the American Constitution is the greatest politi-cal privilege that was ever accord-ed to the human race.” - CC

According to columnist Walter Lippman, the political genius of Coolidge was a talent for effec-tively doing nothing. “This active inactivity suits the mood and cer-tain needs of the country admira-bly...It suits all business interests which want to be let alone...And it suits all those who have become convinced that government in this country has become dangerously complicated and top-heavy.”

Coolidge was working hard. Putting the brakes on run-away spending, which included farm subsidies, and repealing bad laws, was highly unpopular.

While Coolidge was con-sidered Victorian in his ways, he was the first president to use the radio to talk to the nation and was always an advocate for the avia-tion industry and transportation in general.

Amity Shales writes that “To put his achievement more simply, Coolidge kept the government out of the way of commerce.” When he left office in 1929...”the federal government was smaller than when he had become president in 1923.”

“No enterprise can exist for itself alone. It ministers to some great need, it performs some great service, not for itself, but for oth-ers; or failing therein, it ceases to be profitable and ceases to exist.” - CC

Coolidge died January 5, 1933. At the funeral there was no eulogy, no address and only two hymns. The service lasted 22 minutes. Coolidge would have been pleased.

Mid-States Supply Co.’s Valve Modification Facility in Kansas City, Missouri, is using technology to dramatically improve its opera-tion.

The 52-year-old firm provides pipes, valves and fittings (ranging in size from ½” to 42” in diameter) to customers across the country from its 33 locations. Industries such as oil, gas and food are served.

The 120,000-sq.-ft. Kansas City plant modifies the pipes or valves with fittings, hangers, extensions and grease fittings as needed for each customer, or any other custom attribute needed. Services offered at the facility in-clude design, machining, welding, fabrication, full custom modifica-tion and testing.

The plant had recently hired a technical director, Cameron Fulton, ME, to upgrade and improve its operation. He has taken the firm from “paper & pencil” designs and plans to full-blown computerized CAD/CAM designs, programs and documentation with Solidworks and Mastercam for Solidworks.

“Cameron has really improved our quality and efficiency,” stated Owen Cudney, plant manager and 30-year veteran. “With this soft-ware, we can turn around custom projects for our customers in a few days. We can provide drawings ahead of time for approval. He has also designed and programmed some of our own custom equip-ment and tooling for use in our plant. We now have QR codes to track our work.”

Fulton, a nine-year industry veteran, with experience ranging from machine design to data acqui-

sition, was already familiar with Solidworks. He brought in QTE Manufacturing solutions to pro-vide a turn-key solution including Mastercam for Solidworks. QTE’s Reece Gibson provided individual training to Fulton to get him up to speed on the design software. Ful-ton has designed numerous fixtures

and pieces of testing equipment used in the plant’s daily operations.

“The QTE crew really knows what they are doing,” commented Fulton. “I can’t wait for Mastercam X7 to come out.”
