VibrationSome power tools create vibration.Over exposure to vibration caused by long periods of use orusing tools with excessive levels of vibration can lead tovarious medical conditions.

These injuries are classed as Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome(HAV’s). All Manufacturers will have tools that vibrate. Thelevels will vary.

For even lower vibration and noise use Makita ‘Y’ cutter SDSMAX brill bits. Tests show up to 20% less vibration whenusing the Y cutter compared with the 2 cutter bit and up to10% less vibration when compared with the 4 cutter bit.For full details and information see page 03.

Noise Noise can be a nuisance and continued exposure can lead tohearing loss etc. All Makita tools are designed to produce lowerlevels of noise.

All Makita Tools are tested to the latest strict Standards andsome tools such as demolition hammers are testedto the “Outdoor Noise Directive”.For full details and information see page 03.

DustDust is potentially harmful to the operator and the machine.Makita tools are designed to minimise risk to both.

Working with dust can be very harmful. There are some dustswhich are even Carcinogenic.

Whether you are working with wood, Concrete and Sandproducts, dust collection or suppression is a must. For full details and information see page 08.

Makita is the power tool industry leader providing professional power toolsranging from electric to outdoor powered equipment. Makita not onlyproduces machines of high-quality, but also takes safety as a number onepriority. Manufacturing tools that can work harder and safer for longer hasbeen a goal of Makita since the first electric tool was made in 1958.

Makita have been pioneers since 1994 in designing and producing low vibrationmachines following a Makita technology called Anti-Vibration Technology or AVT.The first products to have their vibration figures cut were drills, brush cutters, strimmers and diamond core drills.

/// VIBRATION /// NOISEWhen using a power tool, vibrationis produced as a by-product of thatprocess. Vibration used to be somethingthat was overlooked by employers andemployees alike. However, with theeffects of vibration exposure beingrevealed, it was necessary formanufactures and employers to take aserious stance to protect the workforce.Vibration levels are normally recordedby looking at the amount of kineticenergy produced in a certain timescale– e.g. meters per second m/s.

If steps are not taken to limit theamount of vibration a machine producesand the level of exposure an individualreceives, then injuries such as VibrationWhite Finger (VWF) will occur throughHand-Arm Vibration (HAV). This canpotentially leave contractors opento legal issues.

In July 2005 the Physical AgentsDirective became law. The new lawmeant that all power tools had to havetheir vibration levels measured andthat information to be made available toanyone. This information helps towardseducating the operator to understandhow long they can safely operatea machine. However, it is not onlyimportant to produce a machine whichlimits or even eliminates any dangerto the operator, but it is also vital thatthe operator and contracting companiesare educated in the risks and preventiontechniques surrounding vibration hazards.

Makita provides the right tool for the jobwhilst making that tool as safe to useas technologically possible. It is vital youequip your workforce with the safestproducts available. A safe productmeans a longer operational time thanksto reduced vibration figures. Workingwith a safer machine makes theoperator confident which in turn willenable them to perform to the maximumof their abilities resulting in a superiorfinish at the end of a task.

Makita is constantly adding to the rangeof AVT machines available, please seewww.makitauk.com for the mostrecent releases.

Protect your workforce and companymake sure your machine has AVT.

VIBRATION WHITE FINGER

This is a condition that can affect thearms, hands, wrists or fingers, whichis related to or contributed to byexposure to vibration.

Symptoms of Hand Arm VibrationSyndrome can include; blanching ornumbness of the fingers, pins andneedles and can lead to reduceddexterity of the fingers and hand.

Vibration exposure can also result incarpal tunnel syndrome, which causespain in the wrists, together withnumbness and tingling. The conditionis often found in people who haveused hand held or vibratory toolsand equipment.

Tools likely to cause vibrationinjury include:

:: Percussive tools e.g. rivetting, caulking, fettling and swaging.

:: Grinders, including pedestal and hand-held grinders.

:: Pneumatic drills and hammers, including percussive and rotary hammers.

Power tool operators are not just at riskfrom vibration. Noise also poses a hazardto your workforce. Excessive noise fromusing a machine can put the operatorunder a high level of discomfort and evencause permanent damage to hearing.

The Control of Noise at Work Regulations2005 came into force for all industrysectors in Great Britain on April 6 2006.This regulation was set in place to ensurethat employees’ hearing is protected fromexcessive noise at their place of work.

All Makita products are designed to be asquiet and efficient as physically possibleto protect your workforce. A rangeof protective clothing such as safetyglasses, ear protectors and durable workware is available from Makita.

As the anti vibration grip receives movement from themachine through the shaft the vibrations are dissipatedwith help of ball joint functioning as fulcrum. The rubber damper between GRIP and SHAFT absorbs thevibration from the ball joint.

ANTI VIBRATION REAR HANDLE

As the handle receives vibration from the motor housing the handleis shifted in all directions with the help of the ball joint functioningas a fulcrum, the rubber dampers soak up this movementlowering the vibration transferred to the operator.

/// SOFTWARE SOLUTIONSToolMINDER is a total managementsolution for all site equipment. By usingthe easy to navigate ToolMINDERsoftware you can not only choose theright tool to do the best job, but youcan work out how long the operatorcan use that machine before potentiallyrisking injury.

Measuring vibration levels is vitallyimportant to protect the operator fromHand-Arm Vibration (HAV) which canlead to injuries such as VibrationWhite Finger (VWF).

The Physical Agents Directive becamelaw in July 2005. This directive requiredall power tools to have their vibrationlevels measured and that informationto be made available to anyone. This information helps towards educatingthe operator to understand how long theycan safely operate a machine.

Measurement of vibration should not bethe only deciding factor in choosing theright machine for a job. It is not alwaysbetter to select a tool with the lowestvibration. When comparing two tools, atool that has a marginal increase invibration but also has an increase in

output power over the other, will prove tobe a good choice as it will take less timeto do the same amount of work, so theincrease in the vibration figure does notnecessarily effect the amount of workthat can be completed.

The noise produced by a machine alsoposes a risk for its users. ToolMINDERdisplays the level of sound created byeach tool so steps may be taken toavoid discomfort and injury.

Protecting your team from injury, makingthem feel comfortable and safe on siteshould be of the highest priority.

10Vibration hotline: 01908 214004

Secondly, if adequate measures are nottaken to evaluate risk and inform theworkforce, it leaves your businessvulnerable to legal repercussions.

ToolMINDER provides a single point ofreference to find the best machine fora particular application whilst showingtechnical data, safe usage limits andnoise levels. ToolMINDER will then adviseyou which protective items the operatorshould be provided with as well as giving

you the option to print out a vibrationdata label that can be attached to themachine meaning no excuses fordangerous use. All information fromdifferent jobs can be stored and keptfor later reference which shows yourcompliance with the Physical AgentsDirective.

With ToolMINDER a contractor can workout what tools are required, which safetyprecautions need to be implemented and

can inform the workforce even beforelabour begins.

ToolMINDER is expandable and all yourmachine data can be added irrespectiveof source? Manufacturer? And will allowyou to add your existing plant if required.
