Text Chat of Lainy Voom's PUSH

    Premiere in Second Life

    October 25, 2009

[9:25] Love Perfferle: I think the screen is the wrong aspect to thefilm

[9:25] Love Perfferle: I am going to adjust[9:25] Love Perfferle: the screen

[9:25] Sol Bartz: It's letterboxed into a 4:3 aspect ratio.[9:25] Sol Bartz: The actual aspect ratio was an irregular one.[9:26] Sol Bartz: 1440 x 900 or some such.

[9:26] Love Perfferle: yes, my old screen and render - I factoredthat down

[9:26] Sol Bartz: so I just encoded it thru Quicktime using 320x240,with letterboxing to pad it.

    [9:26] Love Perfferle: better

    [9:26] Love Perfferle: welcoem Scout!

    [9:26] Scout Kukulcan: yo

[9:27] Sol Bartz: so a 4:3 screen should look okay... unless youwanted to try to crop the letterbox.

[10:00] Lainy Voom: I'm sorry about not being able to do a voicechat, I feel a bit of an idiot

  • 8/14/2019 Machiniplex Premiere of "Push": Text Chat

    10/43

[10:21] Wytchwhisper Sadofsky: its greatly surrealist u did wickedjob

[10:21] Lainy Voom: thanks very much

[10:21] GToon Jun: couple questions to start us off[10:21] GToon Jun: Where did the idea for this film come from?

[10:22] Rysan Fall is Online[10:22] Peachy Ballyhoo is Offline

[10:22] Lainy Voom: had just finished making "The Stolen Child" andI felt as though I'd been stuck in a little box creatively, because Iwas trying to stay true to the poem, to try to interpret the poem ina particular way, without resorting to cliche. So when I had finishedI felt this sudden whoosh of freedom, and that gave me a push ofcreative energy.

Usually when I get these creative moments, I usually waste thembecause I'm trying to overthink something. This time for whateverreason I just said "Oh, stuff it, just do it" so even if an idea wassilly or cliche or didn't make any sense, I just created it, andfilmed it.So the film didn't come from any conscious thoughts, it was justpulled from some unconscious thoughts, it must have been from what Iwas feeling at the time. It doesn't use the left side of the brain,so in some ways it feels very dreamlike (to me).

"Stolen" was very structed, very strict, I spent a lot of timecreating the sets, paying attention to technical aspects, reading thetext, o

    [10:23] Wytchwhisper Sadofsky: thats awesome

[10:23] Lainy Voom: Stolen" was very structed, very strict, I spenta lot of time creating the sets, paying attention to technicalaspects, reading the text, over thinking things. "Push" is creativelyfree, I spent no time at all making sets, or thinking about what Iwas doing. The 2 tilms were created within a couple of weeks of each

other, and they are probably direct opposites of each other.

[10:23] Beans Canning: so it was a reaction against the imposedstructure of stolen child?

[10:23] Rosco Teardrop: both ways have their merits, and both workedfor you

[10:24] Lainy Voom: yeah it was a reaction, which is why I called it

    [10:27] Pooky Amsterdam: brilliant

[10:27] GToon Jun: Did one set up lead to the next?

    [10:27] Lainy Voom: yes

[10:27] Sol Bartz: Whoa! Sequentially filmed, this? I'm stunned.

[10:27] Wytchwhisper Sadofsky: that is wicked

[10:28] Lainy Voom: Not all of it, but just about all of the edit isexactly how it went into the editor

[10:28] Rohan Fermi: the story unfolds itself

[10:28] GToon Jun: Where did you find the music for the film?

    [10:28] Sol Bartz: Wow.

    [10:28] Peachy Ballyhoo is Online

[10:28] Lainy Voom: I never thought about that, that is differentthan how I sually work, its all over the place usually

[10:28] Wytchwhisper Sadofsky: the subconcious is anamazing thing:)especially when u let it roam free like that imho

[10:28] Lainy Voom: its never chronological

[10:29] Lainy Voom: Yeah I think I just caught it at the right timeWytch[10:29] Lainy Voom: luck

[10:29] Pooky Amsterdam: you gave yourself the freedom to do this[10:29] Wytchwhisper Sadofsky: u were in da zone

[10:29] Beans Canning: but this film is very chronological[10:29] Beans Canning: in theme as well as in method

[10:29] GToon Jun: I think it's a bit more than luck, Lainy.

[10:29] GToon Jun: Talent is the largest part, I think

[10:29] Sol Bartz: Oh I agree, Beans. Just amazed it was filmed so.

[10:29] Lainy Voom: its lucky I grabbed that elusive creative spurtof energy

    [10:29] Beans Canning: yes

  • 8/14/2019 Machiniplex Premiere of "Push": Text Chat

    13/43

    [10:29] GToon Jun: ah, yes

[10:29] Lainy Voom: they come and go really quickly

[10:30] Sol Bartz: Yes they do.

[10:30] Beans Canning: I noticed previous to film

    [10:30] Lainy Voom: ?

[10:30] Beans Canning: some fo your sreenshots had similar themes

[10:30] Lainy Voom: Oh they did?

[10:30] Beans Canning: wondered if it was something building up

[10:30] Rohan Fermi: we are lucky as well you grabbed that enery andformed it into that film for us

[10:30] Beans Canning: there was a shot of a woman with clocks inher back

[10:31] Sol Bartz: A great shot.

[10:31] Pooky Amsterdam: beautiful and surreal-[10:31] Pooky Amsterdam: the music was fantastic[10:31] Pooky Amsterdam: teh bongos music was perfect

[10:31] Sol Bartz: At what point in the production timeline was the

    music decision made, Lainy?

[10:31] GToon Jun: yes, tell us about the music, Lainy

[10:32] Lainy Voom: I found the music before I started editing[10:32] Lainy Voom: oo hang on I've got a prepped answer for this

[10:32] Wytchwhisper Sadofsky: i loved the music

    [10:32] GToon Jun: Me, too

[10:32] Lainy Voom: I'm always playing music from Magnatune, thereare some really amazing musicians on there. Music, the film, and theedit are always integral to each other. I couldn't take a film editand then place any music on top of it, the music dictates how thefilm will be and the film changes and adapts to what the music is, somusic is extremely important. So with "Push" the music dictated thespeed of the edit, and the shots that were chosen.[10:32] Lainy Voom: Yeah I'd been playing that music for a while[10:32] Lainy Voom: I'ts a great album

  • 8/14/2019 Machiniplex Premiere of "Push": Text Chat

    14/43

[10:33] Wytchwhisper Sadofsky: i have that chanel on too

[10:33] GToon Jun: It reminded me of a modern dance performance

    [10:33] Gala Charron: worked perfectly

[10:33] Beans Canning: I know you usually spend a lot of timegetting your edits in exactly the right place, was this the case withPush?

[10:33] GToon Jun: And there are images of people moving, dancing?walking in teh film

[10:33] Beans Canning: it seemed absolutely right to me[10:34] Beans Canning: witht he music

    [10:34] Sol Bartz: Indeed. Inseparable.

[10:34] Wytchwhisper Sadofsky: i think the greatest thing about itis its like stepping into a mind

[10:34] Lainy Voom: I'm a little bit obsessive with my edits I guesslol

[10:34] Pooky Amsterdam: its so great

[10:34] GToon Jun: How often it is in machinima that the music seemspasted on to the film

[10:34] GToon Jun: instead of being an integral part

[10:34] Sol Bartz: Has the music artist seen your movie, Lainy?

[10:34] GToon Jun: like in PUSH[10:34] Lainy Voom: I dont thin so Sol?

[10:34] Wytchwhisper Sadofsky: music is really important they shouldmesh an this does nicely

[10:34] Sol Bartz: I'll bet they'd be flabbergasted (in a good way).

    Worth dropping them a line.

[10:34] Rosco Teardrop: or music makes a crap film have some merit[10:35] Rosco Teardrop: cherting

[10:35] Lainy Voom: Yeah I agree totally with all these comments

[10:36] GToon Jun: Here is the link to Ahsas album by Solace

[10:36] Wytchwhisper Sadofsky: aww they rock

[10:36] Beans Canning: I'm sorry to go on about Lainy's film Kickwhen some of you might not have seen it

[10:36] GToon Jun: Magnatune is really a great place for music. Somerecent classical music added is wonderful. Chopin, Brahms

[10:37] Beans Canning: but the way the music works for that filmreminds me so much of how this one came together

[10:37] Wytchwhisper Sadofsky: no its good beans it makes those whohavent wanna refrence it

[10:37] Beans Canning: the music is more thna just a tune, it ispart of the meaning of the piece

[10:38] GToon Jun: BTW Lainy's website is[10:38] GToon Jun: http://www.voom-machine.com/[10:39] GToon Jun: Lainy, I know most people here are aware of yourfilm career, but can you tell us a little about your background as afilmmaker?

[10:39] Sol Bartz: And I'll go ahead and mention that this film isup at Machiniplex too: http://www.machiniplex.net/?id=34 Streaming in

good quality there, and three HQ download types. The WMV is Lainy'soriginal encode and probably the best quality of the three.

    [10:39] GToon Jun: Thanks, Sol

[10:39] Pooky Amsterdam: wonderful Sol thank you!

[10:40] Lainy Voom: As a Machinimist? I started in late 2004 when Isaw that the Sims2 came with a record function. Then when I bought acomputer good enough to run Second Life, I came in here and was inlove immediately, that was Feb 2007

    [10:40] Wytchwhisper Sadofsky: whoot

[10:40] GToon Jun: What drew you into machinima filmmaking?

[10:40] Rosco Teardrop: did you make filmns before machinima?

[10:40] Pooky Amsterdam: remarkable platform yes

    16/43

[10:41] Lainy Voom: I used to make crappy flash films from about2000 onwards, but they were pretty crappy.[10:41] Lainy Voom: I don't know what made me stick with Machinima,I guess being able to tell visual stories in a 3d space[10:41] Lainy Voom: something about 3 dimensions I really love

[10:41] GToon Jun: Were you a fan of animation?

[10:41] Lainy Voom: being able to walk around a scene

    [10:41] Wytchwhisper Sadofsky: agreed

[10:42] Lainy Voom: Yeah Ive always loved animations

[10:42] GToon Jun: Who are some of the filmmakers that haveinfluenced you?

    [10:42] Lainy Voom: Machinima?

    [10:42] GToon Jun: any

http://www.youtube.com/user/piercep#p/u/12/MQPlZGR7hp0They take influences from traditional animation and not video cultureor cinema culture, which are the categories that most Machinima, generally as a whole, would fall into.I like these guys because they do their own thing, and they do itwith great technical skill and panache. They seem to have somethingto communicate, which goes outside of wanting to be popular orwhatever. When I watch their films I get the feeling that they arecraftsmen, tinkering away at their craft (if that makes any sense).

My favourite mach films would probably be "The Days After" fromApollo or "Anna", which I think are just perfect films.http://www.youtube.com/user/albi84#p/a/u/1/7SuYWoEm-Nw

[10:44] Lainy Voom: I love the Cohen brothers too!

[10:44] GToon Jun: Those are filmmakers I admire too and for most ofthe same reasons[10:44] GToon Jun: BTW, I received an email from Daniel recently

[10:45] Sol Bartz: If any of you haven't seen Pierce Portecarrero's"Game Over" from a few years ago, it's some really wonderful use ofSL. Totally unique.

[10:45] GToon Jun: he's been going through hard times and wanted meto know that he still plans

[10:45] GToon Jun: on putting together a new film in the future

    [10:45] Wytchwhisper Sadofsky: awww

[10:45] Lainy Voom: Yeah hel get there Im sure

    [10:45] Pooky Amsterdam: great

[10:45] GToon Jun: he sent me some short bits which were marvelous

[10:46] Beans Canning: how much did the machinima community play a

part in you wanting to keep involved in film making?

[10:46] GToon Jun: About Second Life, Lainy; what was it that drewyou away from Sims 2 into SL?[10:46] GToon Jun: go ahead with Beans first if you like

[10:46] Lainy Voom: k[10:46] Lainy Voom: I guess it played a big part Beans, I remembergetting my first review on my first movie and being hooked ever since

[10:48] GToon Jun: By the way, everyone..feel free to ask questionsor comment as this session is more open ended than other premiere'swe've had.

[10:48] Lainy Voom: In answer to Gtoon, I'd really outgrown Sims2after about a year, it wouldnt do what I wanted it to do,

[10:49] GToon Jun: So what led you to SL?

[10:49] Sol Bartz: Yeah, I'm curious what first drew your attentionto its potential.

[10:49] Lainy Voom: I'd been curious since early 2006 but I couldntget it to work on my old system

[10:50] Lainy Voom: I walked about for a bout 2 weeks not reallygetting it, then I left it for about a month and when I went backdecided to film something, then I understood it's potential

[10:50] Pooky Amsterdam: the tech waited for you to be ready for it

[10:50] Lainy Voom: I jsut thought "crikey, I can do anything, anything, wow"

[10:54] Wytchwhisper Sadofsky: i liked dumb man too

[10:54] GToon Jun: Just hit your old play key

    [10:54] Rohan Fermi: and 'Fall'

[10:54] Peachy Ballyhoo: They are all among the best machinima hasto offer

[10:54] Beans Canning: the shadows make a difference

PUSH is screened a 2nd time

    [10:54] Pooky Amsterdam: brilliant

[10:55] Sol Bartz: Absolutely. Fall is gorgeous.

[10:55] Lainy Voom: I don't personally like fall, its my leastfavourite film

[10:55] Sol Bartz: Hah, I just love that sheep shearing scene.

[10:55] Pooky Amsterdam: this is such a great film

[10:55] Gala Charron: that my favorite part as well

[10:55] Rosco Teardrop: when I first saw Push, I wasnt even thinkingabout SL, just amazed. Most machinima scream awful game engine

[10:55] Rohan Fermi: brilliant work with SL , that masters to workaround the 'weak' parts of it

[10:56] Lainy Voom: what would you say were the week parts Rohan?

[10:56] Rohan Fermi: amd shows it's potential

[10:56] Pooky Amsterdam: there are no weak parts in this film

[10:56] Lainy Voom: facial movements are a major projbem with sl

[10:56] Sol Bartz: Rik Riel (another SL blogger) said he couldhardly believe Push was made in SL, because it was just so good.

[10:56] Rohan Fermi: the standard animations, walking

[10:57] GToon Jun: I agree. This is one of those films thattranscend the game engine it was made in

[10:57] Beans Canning: I'm always amazed at how Lainy makes any

    engine look

[10:57] Lainy Voom: you can buy walk animations though[10:57] Lainy Voom: speach still looks a bit crappy

[10:57] Beans Canning: I think you pay so much attention to textures

[10:57] GToon Jun: Most personal vision films do that because thedirectors tend to see the engine as a means to an end creatively

[10:57] Rohan Fermi: yes you can do it but most filmmakers don't

[10:57] GToon Jun: I love how the film just starts

[10:57] Love Perfferle: variable fps in SL is the biggest challengereally - can ruin a shot

[10:58] Beans Canning: aww i like hollywood credits[10:58] Beans Canning: specially when thy catch fire ?smiles ?

[10:58] GToon Jun: But... the credits at the end are wonderful

[10:59] Rohan Fermi: this film can easily go into any animationfestival, have you thought about an entry ?

[10:59] GToon Jun: clean clear and in the style of the rest of thefilm

[10:59] Lainy Voom: Push has problems with bad fps on the sky scenes

[10:59] Rohan Fermi: I guess Tom Jantol didi that with success

[10:59] Lainy Voom: variable fps is a problem

[10:59] Peachy Ballyhoo: Are all these shorts building to a biggerproject?

[11:00] Lainy Voom: I've kind of got in my head where I want to bein about 5 movies time, but no plans for a big project

[11:00] Lainy Voom: more development aims really[11:00] Lainy Voom: trying to get better

[11:00] GToon Jun: Lainy, all of your films seem to be "personalvisions" meaning they are efforts to express your feelings our ideas

[11:00] Pooky Amsterdam: wow great and we are really so lucky tomake this journey wiht you too to see it

[11:00] GToon Jun: why aren't more machinima directors working likethis?

[11:01] GToon Jun: Of course[11:01] GToon Jun: but why aren't there more experimental films[11:01] GToon Jun: personal visions[11:01] GToon Jun: personal poetry

[11:01] Beans Canning: I think there's a lot of cannibalism withworld of machinima

[11:01] Wytchwhisper Sadofsky: too many work inside the box

[11:01] GToon Jun: poetic imagery in machinima

[11:01] Beans Canning: instead of inspired by, more attempts to copy

[11:01] Wytchwhisper Sadofsky: do whats expected

[11:01] Lainy Voom: I have a deap rooted need to communicate Iguess?

[11:02] Beans Canning: sounds like an artist

[11:02] Rohan Fermi: most is still 'inside out' Machinima

[11:02] Lainy Voom: Which is one of the reasons I couldnt talk inchat today, because written word and visual imagery Im quite good atcommunicating but verbally I have a problem thinking and talking atthe same time

    [11:02] Wytchwhisper Sadofsky: awww

[11:02] Lainy Voom: So in groups of people I find it difficult toexpress myself successfully, but through film, and the internet Ifeel I can communicate

    [11:02] Wytchwhisper Sadofsky: right on

[11:03] Lainy Voom: That is what is ultimately driving me I guess

[11:03] GToon Jun: Ah...just what I was going to ask

[11:03] Sol Bartz: Just throwing this out there, but maybe noteveryone's personal visions take them out of "the box"? Maybe theyignore the box as well, but it's just where they land?

[11:03] Pooky Amsterdam: isn't where we ladn in the nature of thestory we wish to tell

[11:03] Beans Canning: some people are naturally more mainstream?

[11:04] Wytchwhisper Sadofsky: thats a good thing[11:04] Wytchwhisper Sadofsky: agreed[11:05] Wytchwhisper Sadofsky: lol

    [11:05] Lainy Voom: yep

[11:05] Rohan Fermi: I guess more will jump out of the box in thefuture[11:05] Beans Canning: maybe, maybe not[11:05] Beans Canning: I ma so grateful wehn people do

[11:05] Love Perfferle: why is always 'a box'? Joke

[11:05] GToon Jun: There are some specific images in PUSH I'd liketo ask you about

[11:05] Sol Bartz: I can only speak with certainty about myself...but, yes I think i am. It's where I land. I could work for four yearsand NEVER create something that looked like this. It's just not whereI'm pulled.

[11:05] Wytchwhisper Sadofsky: they may just pop out an suprise ya

[11:05] Rohan Fermi: with inspiring examples like 'Push' maybe morepeople get interested to finmd their own machinima style andexpression

[11:06] Lainy Voom: why would you want to try phil, you already haveyour own style

[11:06] Sol Bartz: And I think someone going outside the box for theSAKE of going outside the box is just as disingenuous as someonestaying in it for equally artificial reasons.

[11:06] GToon Jun: Styles of creating: working in a different waywill produce a different result[11:06] GToon Jun: Lainy decided to work with brain unplugged. Justcreate it without analyzing it

[11:06] Sol Bartz: Yeah, I don't want to, I'm cool with it. I'm justhappy I get to see someone else go there, because I wouldn't have aclue! :)

[11:06] Beans Canning: I also appreciate those people who subsumetheir style and let the characters speak

[11:06] Wytchwhisper Sadofsky: any artist should just enter theirzone an go with their flow imho

[11:07] GToon Jun: Another way is to control everything and fit ittogether

[11:07] Beans Canning: it is a different reaction

[11:07] GToon Jun: reaction is the right work, I think, Beans

[11:07] Lainy Voom: I did switch off my left side of brain, which iswhy it feels a little dreamlike I think

[11:07] GToon Jun: reacting to what?

[11:07] Pooky Amsterdam: its such a great film

[11:07] GToon Jun: to the material in your head? The images? Thefeeling you want to express?

[11:07] Lainy Voom: It was the same feeling of zoning when someonepaints or creates music

[11:07] GToon Jun: Images: so where did the monkeys come from, Lainy

    [11:08] Wytchwhisper Sadofsky: right on

[11:08] Love Perfferle: interesting Lainy, I try to use the samesensitibity I developed as a musician an dlook for that feeling whenI am making films

[11:08] Sol Bartz: I'm losing track of the conversation a bit....all I wanted to say was, I think that some films with land inside thesocially constructed "box" are wholly personal / unplugged visions aswell. I guess I think the box is B.S., but I don't know.

[11:08] Lainy Voom: It was exactly the same feeling as drawing apicture, of zoning out
