Negative economic effects of tourism• Entrance to Machu Picchu, hotels and train lines are

owned by Orient-express hotels group therefore a lot of the profit from tourism leaves the country because the hotels are not owned by Peruvians. • The best jobs with high payment are done by foreigners

not local people so the locals do not earn a lot of money.

Positive economic effects of tourism

• Tourist spend a lot of money which has a positive impact on the local residents. At the local market in Pisac on a Sunday morning for example a handicraft market has developed just for tourist. • Porters are paid $10 a day for the four day trip, more reputable tour

companies request a tip $12 which is given by each member of the tour party which is shared between the porters.• Machu picchu generates $40 million a year in income for the Peruvian

government

Negative environmental effects of tourism • Garbage is thrown into rivers or left close to the trail. This includes

human excreta • Erosion is beginning to occur due to 500 tourist a day and in 1998

53,500 tourist walked the trail.• The rubbish bins are picked up by park wardens and simply dumped

in an open pit about 50m away from the trail.

Negative social effects of tourism

• Local villagers who are employed as porters are not treated well by tour companies and some tourist. They are made to carry bags weighing up to 50kg this can give them a false impression of all visitors.• The local villagers are affected by the clothes of the western visitors

and wish to dress like them rather than in native garments. This causes a breakdown in the local culture

Positive social effects of tourism

• Numbers on the trail are limited to 500 this should allow for areas of quiet reflection due to fewer visitors. • Porters since 2000 have been limited to carry a load of 25kg • The extra income coming into the area as tourism provides jobs and

opportunities to sell souvenirs this has improved a standard of living for local people.
