Meet Simon Allen, CEOA life in educational publishing has taught me many things, but the most vital is that when the content is right, when it has captured the imagination of a primary school child or helped a student pass that entrance exam, then we’ve succeeded as a publisher.

The integrity of Macmillan’s authors and publishing teams has driven the content we’ve produced for many years. We’re proud of the epic range of Macmillan materials that can be found in classrooms and staffrooms the world over. The content may be changing shape; you may be logging on to it or downloading it, but what will never change is the level of time and commitment we spend preparing those materials so they answer the questions you ask of them.

We have a shared goal – to inspire and educate students of English to achieve that simplest aim: to communicate in English. And we know that it’s easier said than done in many teaching situations. This is why alongside the expert content, Macmillan’s support network of teacher trainers, sales teams, field editors and educational advisors are all focused on helping make that happen for teachers. We will make sure that all our pieces are in place to inspire and engage students to get that goal achieved.

History and heritageMacmillan has been a forward-thinking publisher for more than 165 years.

When brothers Daniel and Alexander Macmillan founded Macmillan in 1843, they created a company that recognised and valued great contemporary writing. They made a mark on the literary world by publishing a range of extraordinary works by authors such as Lewis Carroll, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Thomas Hardy and Rudyard Kipling that quickly became part of the internationally recognised canon.

As the company grew, so did the brothers’ belief in the importance of learning, resulting in the launch of scientific research journal Nature and the Palgrave imprint, promoting education and academic scholarship around the world.

When former Prime Minister Harold Macmillan became Chairman, he also recognised that education should become a key investment area for Macmillan. With his vision, the company established itself as a world-leading educational publisher with an outstanding reputation.

Macmillan Education builds on these strengths and has continued to educate generations of communities by developing ground-breaking English Language Teaching (ELT) and curriculum materials for markets worldwide.

This global presence is true today, with Macmillan Education represented in 120 countries. The company is proud of its tradition of working together with local experts to provide relevant educational materials, both digital and in print, from pre-primary through to adult education.

I love working for Macmillan because I get to work with open-minded and friendly people, but they’re also very professional and creative. I also have the privilege to travel around the country to meet amazing teachers with different experiences and different ideas to share.

Teacher support and beyondMacmillan believes that support for teachers is fundamental to the success of any new publication.

Macmillan’s services extend beyond delivering content. Macmillan empowers teachers not only through intensive product training but also through wide-ranging seminars at conferences, online and in-house on practical teaching skills, trends and methodologies.

Macmillan has established strong relationships with Ministries of Education, such as in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Georgia, and Spain, where the company takes part in ministry-led training programmes to encourage teacher development. When implementing bespoke publishing and training programmes, Macmillan respects and takes into account any cultural sensitivities to develop the most suitable educational materials and training programmes for that region.

As a forward-looking publisher, Macmillan regularly explores new educational avenues along with teachers by opening public debates and seminars to see what works. Whether it be a panel discussion on MLearning, a forum post on onestopenglish.com or a blog post on blendedmec.com, Macmillan is very much part of the teaching community and is always keen to grow and learn alongside its customers.

Macmillan’s commitments to improve education and teaching are evident in various other regional and global initiatives, such as Macmillan Training Services (MTS), The Macmillan Partnership Program, and RedNova Consultants (Mexico). These training programmes offer practical courses and credentials for teachers and educational organisations and give Macmillan the opportunity to create long-lasting and beneficial relationships with educational professionals.

13

Whenever Macmillan asks me to do training for them I know that I will always be fully informed and really well looked after while doing something genuinely ground-breaking. They have a very human, personal approach that makes trainers feel valued.

Teresa Doguelli, Teacher Trainer, Turkey.

Digital productsMacmillan continuously invests in cutting-edge digital and online materials for the educational market.

As an experienced publisher, Macmillan has the insight and resources to take advantage of rapid technological changes, but without risking the integrity of its content. Macmillan understands that learning no longer only takes place in the classroom, and has successfully launched several innovative digital and online products that can be used as stand-alone materials or alongside print products.

Macmillan’s print content is increasingly becoming available across a widening number of digital media: through digibooks, Interactive Whiteboard material, eBooks, apps, online resources, learner management networks, DVD material and eWorkbooks.

This extensive range of state-of-the-art digital learning tools ensures that Macmillan’s content can be accessed in the way that best meets the requirements of the user, and will continue to be at the forefront of innovation as the digital environment evolves. An example of this is the repackaging of the Global eWorkbook (DVD-ROM) as digital content that can be used on an institutional network, providing increased flexibility for schools and businesses.

The transition from print to online of the Macmillan Dictionary further illustrates how Macmillan has adapted in line with user expectations and how it will continue to forge digital pathways going forward, providing new opportunities through content licensing and provision of granular data on demand.

Whether in print, digital or a combination of both, Macmillan Education is committed to delivering the most effective and appropriate resources for communities, to a consistently high level.

The Global eWorkbook represents an evolution in self-study materials for students. Within a rich multimedia environment, it provides a wealth of resources for learners, enabling them to continue their studies at their own pace, and in their own time.

Blended learningMacmillan Education enables teachers to experience a fully blended-learning experience by combining online, digital and classroom learning.

Macmillan’s expanding use of available channels, from print textbooks to smartphone applications, offers an integrated approach that makes learning more streamlined, flexible and personalised for both teachers and students.

By combining these products, educational institutions can adopt a more flexible learning programme. Additional courses and materials can be offered remotely so that students can choose to study at their own pace while at the same time develop their independent learning skills without missing out on the support of a teacher.

Macmillan’s flagship blended-learning environment is the Macmillan English Campus (MEC), an online practice area for learners of English. MEC offers a comprehensive solution that combines crucial face-to-face teaching with over 4,300 interactive online support materials in a controlled learning environment.

Macmillan Practice Online, a practice environment for learners on the go, offers a practical solution for institutions taking their first step into blended learning.

Teacher-centred publishingThe process of every Macmillan publication starts with our listening to the markets.

Working together with teachers and educational institutions is crucial to understanding what course materials are most required in the different markets. That’s why Macmillan’s editorial teams and sales representatives spend vital time with teachers and students researching what learning materials and delivery methods will work best for them.

One of Macmillan’s strengths lies in its long-lasting relationships with Ministries of Education, universities, directors of studies, and educational leaders who provide vital feedback and work closely with Macmillan to develop the most effective and suitable resources for the local ELT markets.

Macmillan’s innovative approach to the changing technologies in education means that new digital materials are constantly developed and launched. Through regular classroom testing and focus groups these products are adjusted and fine-tuned to ensure they are suitable for their intended setting.

Every final product, whether digital or in print, is realised thanks to Macmillan’s highly skilled authors and editorial teams, many of whom have years of either teacher or teacher-trainer experience behind them.

Via the design, production, sales & marketing and distribution teams, Macmillan brings these new products to teachers and students around the globe, ensuring the successful completion of the publishing cycle.

A writer’s relationship with his or her publisher is very important, and I’m so glad to have had such a good relationship with Macmillan over the past ten years. They have nurtured and developed my writing from the beginning, and my career would not be what it is today without their support.

The ELT communityMacmillan’s reputation for being ‘the friendly publisher’ is not without basis.

The bright red Macmillan stand at conferences has become a meeting hub for teachers, students and other learning enthusiasts. As former teachers, many of Macmillan’s representatives know exactly what it is like to be in the classroom, and they are always ready to help teachers find a product that suits their needs.

Often teachers have come across our products and services through our extensive sales network. Macmillan’s representatives are the face of the organisation and provide up-to-date information and support to teachers with all levels of experience.

Many of Macmillan’s authors are frequent speakers at events and conferences and travel into schools to meet the teachers and students who are using their courses. They also regularly deliver unique interactive webinars which are available anywhere in the world.

It’s not just on the stand at a conference or at an author talk that Macmillan connects with its teachers. Macmillan is a strong part of the online ELT community with regional and product-specific Facebook pages, Twitter feeds, a YouTube channel and regular practical newsletters. Macmillan is behind one of ELT’s biggest online communities – onestopenglish.com, a teacher resource site where every year more than one million teachers meet, discuss and share best practice and new learning methods.

I love running interactive webinars as it gives me the opportunity to get to know our teachers and customers on an international scale. They know that they have a contact point – a living, breathing person – and we get honest feedback and learn what our customers really want. Running live sessions with hundreds of participants is very exciting and every single webinar leaves me with a buzz!

When I visit our Macmillan teams in the markets it gives me a clear understanding of our commitments as publishers, to listen and absorb what’s needed in the classroom of today. It’s vital that we spend time in the reality of the classroom to feed that back in to how we publish and what we publish. Whether digital or in print, our content aims to inspire and make a positive difference to a student’s learning experience.Helen Melia (above), Managing Director, Europe & the Middle East, Macmillan Education.
