Macmillan Secondary Teachers’ Day
Dear Teachers,
Macmillan ELT have the pleasure of inviting you to the Secondary Teachers’ Day which will be held at the Hotel Silken Puerta de América, Madrid, on Saturday 27th April.
At the Macmillan Teachers’ Day our principal aim is to offer you practical training workshops that are designed to reflect current teaching contexts, enabling you to keep up-to-date with the latest innovations. You will take away with you sound activities and ideas that you can use directly in your classrooms.
We are very pleased to welcome back Simon Ward, Senior Practitioner Educational Psychologist based in England, who will deliver the plenary on how to engage and motivate teenagers. This will be followed by a series of workshops. Susan Dreger will be giving a talk on the use of digital media to develop students’ language skills and promote collaboration. Fiona Mauchline, co-author of Macmillan’s course for ESO, Interface, will focus on ways to make learning memorable and meaningful. Her second talk will focus on the use of images and visuals to promote language learning with students. Kieran Donaghy will explore ways of using film to promote creativity and communication and finally, Donna Fields will present ideas for using comics and cartoons to support subject-based learning at Secondary level.
As the Macmillan Teachers’ Day is extremely popular, we encourage you to reserve your place as soon as possible. To make registration easier, we have an online registration process. You can reserve your place by visiting Events on the Macmillan website: www.macmillanelt.es/teacher-development/events/ and submitting the online registration form. Once you have registered you will receive an email confirmation.
Alternatively, you can phone or send an email to the local office, stating your full name, school and the sessions you would like to attend or complete the attached coupon and fax it to the office.

Simon Ward
Simon is a Senior Practitioner Educational Psychologist in England where his specialism is positive behaviour and well-being. For a number of years, Simon has been running a variety of projects to develop the attitudes, skills and experiences which allow individuals and organisations to thrive and lead to success and achievement. As a regular trainer, he has delivered seminars on a range of topics including: motivation and learning, positive behaviour management and solution oriented approaches.
Susan Dreger
Susan has been teaching English in Barcelona since 1991 and has experience teaching all ages. Along with teaching EFL, she has also taught Science, Geography and ICT at Primary level. She holds a Masters degree in Technology and Tesol from the University of Manchester and is currently working at the ‘Departament d’Ensenyament’ in the TAC (Technology for Learning and Knowledge) unit. Part of her duties are finding ICT resources for foreign language classrooms and disseminating them amongst teachers.
Kieran Donaghy
Kieran has taught in the UK, Italy, Portugal and Spain. He works at UAB Idiomes, Barcelona. Kieran is particularly interested in the use of film for teaching English. He is the co-author of Films in Health Sciences Education and has an award-winning blog on the use of film http://film-english.com/.
Donna Fields
Donna has a doctorate in folktales, is a professor at the Valencian International University, and is a teacher trainer for the Department of Education in Valencia. She is coordinator for the English courses sponsored by the Diputación of Valencia, has taught all levels, from Primary to Bachiller both in the United States and in Spain, and is currently working on a series of multi-language children’s books.
Fiona Mauchline
A teacher, teacher trainer and materials writer based in Cáceres, Fiona has been writing for Macmillan since 2005, including Interface 1 & 2 and teachers’ books and resources for Voices & Upgrade. She writes a blog on learner-centred teaching for teachers of teenagers and is co-curator of the ELTpics online teachers’ resource.
ROOM 2
Fiona Mauchline Picture this (ESO)
Images in the coursebook, images created by students, images in the mind’s eye – all part of a teacher’s box of magic tricks to help make classes more motivating. But do we use them enough? This workshop will look at some activities exploiting illustrations, mobile phone images and visualisation to support skills and language work in the classroom. After all, as the song say, language is ‘more than words’.
Fiona Mauchline Me’ is for memorable, meaningful: the learner-centred coursebook
(ESO & Bachillerato)
Current coursebooks have moved away from the ‘describe your house/last holiday format of earlier materials as content/culture-based learning and model texts take pole position. The content may be more challenging, but is it memorable? How do we personalise it all? Where do the ‘Me Moments’ come in? Fiona’s workshop will look at a wealth of creative, learner-centred activities to the put the ‘Me’ back into memorable and meaningful lessons for teens and adults alike.
ROOM 3
Kieran Donaghy Short and sweet: using films to promote creativity and communication
(ESO & Bachillerato)
In this hands-on workshop we’ll explore how short films can be used in the classroom. We’ll look at how we can use short films to promote creativity, and both oral and written communication by doing communicative activities based around a variety of short films. The session will be very practical and involve a lot of teacher participation. Teachers will come away with practical activities to use with their own students.
Donna Fields Comics & cartoons for the CLIL classroom (ESO)
We will look at comics and picture stories from various sources which outline sequential tasks or actions that can be used as scaffolding materials, in any CLIL (or non-CLIL) classroom. We will then look at cartoons in videos, and ways in which they can also be used as educational tools. We’ll talk about how these venues can be designed to introduce vocabulary, new themes, and/or review material in interactive manners, including speaking, reading and writing. The presentation will be participatory as much as possible.
Speakers Sessions
ROOM 1 – PLENARY
Simon Ward Increasing engagement and motivation in the Secondary classroom
In this plenary we will explore how you can encourage your students to try new things, be more open to learning, relish challenging tasks, risk making mistakes, express themselves as individuals and become engaged and absorbed in the challenges of the classroom. We will focus on four key areas to success: the surprising truth about what motivates us, MINDSETS or the new psychology of success, building resilience and well-being and engagement and flow.
ROOM 1
Susan Dreger Setting up virtual learning environments (VLE) and evaluating with rubrics
(ESO & Bachillerato)
Setting up your own virtual classroom has never been easier thanks to the many free educational platforms that are now available for teachers. They can be set up according to your needs and you can be assured that students are working within a safe online environment. But how can work done in these VLEs be evaluated? Try using rubrics and start evaluating the learning process and progess, not only the results!
Susan Dreger Collaboration? Let’s do it the wiki way! (ESO & Bachillerato)
This talk is an introduction to Wikis and Web 2.0 Tools and the ways in which they are being used to enhance collaborative work and language learning. Many ideas and examples of how to use wikis will be shown, along with specific examples of how Web 2.0 tools can be used to practise English both in and out of the classroom.
