ETHIOPIA, HORN OF AFRICA

God brings the Amhara people to us from Ethiopia, in the Horn of Africa. The Amhara people living in the U.S. maintain close ties to the Amhara people living in and around Washington, D.C. Most Amhara embrace either Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity or Islam. Over the years, the Amhara people have mixed Christianity with the worship of deceased saints and have embraced an

unorthodox view of Christ. Most have no real knowledge of the Scriptures. In North Carolina, the majority of the men work in limo, taxi

or convenience store businesses, while the women work in restaurants and salons or grocery and retail stores. The Amhara people highly value their unique food and culture, so even if their population is very small, they quickly establish a grocery store and restaurant to meet the needs of the Amharic-Ethiopian community. The central influence of these Amharic-Ethiopian stores and restaurants makes them a good location to meet the Amhara people.

God brings the Arab-Levant people to us from the Fertile Crescent, the land along a northward arc between the Persian Gulf and the Mediterranean Sea. The people of the Arab-Levant live along the route Abram and Sarai took on their journey to the land of Canaan. The Levant includes parts of Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Israel and Palestine. As with most Arabs, they practice

Sunni Islam and show a genuine hospitality to strangers. Many of the Arab-Levant people have lived in North Carolina for 20 years or more

and have well-established businesses. As a result, our Arab-Levant neighbors invest deeply in North Carolina’s communities. Their hospitality and their close proximity in many of our neighborhoods present many opportunities to develop genuine friendships.

God brings the Arab-Sudanese people to us from the Sudan in Africa. The majority of the Sudanese Arabs come from a region in Africa known as a desert wasteland. As a result, the Sudanese Arabs living in Africa tend to protect their own and exclude the outsider. In North Carolina, most of the men drive taxis or limos while the women tend to work in grocery stores or care for the

children at home. The Arab-Sudanese love community, particularly with one another. In fact, you will often see a group of Sudanese men

in local coffee shops on the weekends drinking tea and coffee while discussing current political or religious topics of interest. Their love for coffee and tea, along with their interest in religious topics, offer great opportunities to learn about the Arab-Sudanese community and share the good news of the gospel.

God brings the Bhutanese people to us from the country of Bhutan in South Asia. For years, the Bhutanese people have experienced religious and ethnic persecution. This persecution has scattered them throughout the world. Many of the Bhutanese who arrive in North Carolina come through refugee resettlement agencies. Typically, these agencies can provide for their immediate physical

needs upon arrival. However, after that, the majority have to fend for themselves. Most of the Bhutanese have lived in refugee camps for

years before arriving in the U.S. They have a limited education, low literacy levels and no job skills. Almost none of them speak English. The Bhutanese arrive in North Carolina as a vulnerable and needy people. Their profound needs present us with many opportunities to demonstrate the love of God in word and deed.

God brings the Hausa people to us from West Africa. The Hausa represent one of the largest ethnic groups in West Africa, originating primarily from Nigeria and Niger. More than 25 million people speak the Hausa language worldwide. The Hausa have a reputation as a very relational, hospitable and gracious people. Most Hausa practice a religion that mixes traditional animistic

(superstitious) rituals with Islam. In their home context, many work hard as farmers, shepherds or merchants. In North Carolina, they have

a reputation for hard work in convenience stores, small African goods stores, or as taxi and limo drivers. One of the largest populations of Hausa in North America lives in Greensboro. Their friendly nature combined with their many animistic fears offer believers natural opportunities to make regular visits to convenience stores, build rapport and offer to pray for their felt needs.

God brings the Hindi to us from India. As one of the official languages of India, an estimated 180 million people speak the Hindi language throughout India and around the world. In fact, most of the Asian Indian people in North Carolina will have some ability to speak the Hindi language. As the different Asian Indian people groups come to North Carolina, many will use the

common language of Hindi to identify with other Asian Indians living in the same area. Large numbers of Hindi speakers have formed

enclave communities in cities like Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh and Morrisville. They often purchase homes in similar apartment complexes and neighborhoods so that they can live in close proximity to one another. In most major North Carolina cities, the Hindi population has grown so much that they have developed their own socio-economic structure. Believers living in one of these neighborhoods have a great opportunity to befriend their Hindi neighbors, especially through special events celebrated in the home such as birthdays and holidays.

God brings the Nepali-Pahari people to us from Nepal where they live along the Himalayan mountain range. There are many dif-ferent people groups among the Nepali-Pahari people. Many of these people groups speak Pahari. Typically, they practice Hinduism or Buddhism. By and large, the Nepali-Pahari people show a deep devotion to their faith and tend to remain faithful

to their respective temples once they arrive in the U.S. Many of the Nepali people who migrate to North Carolina come as refugees after

years of persecution in Nepal and years of life in refugee camps. The Nepali-Pahari typically arrive with few job skills. Because Nepal has some affinity with India, they often open small shops and restaurants near their Asian Indian neighbors. Regularly visit these shops and restaurants to build gospel-centered relationships with these broken-hearted people.

God brings the Punjabi people to us from northwestern India and southeastern Pakistan. Our Punjabi neighbors are a little bit unique because they have so much diversity among their religions. Many Punjabi people practice Hinduism, many practice Islam, and others are Sikhs. Punjabi men are well-educated businessmen, working in many of the technology

jobs in North Carolina. And the Punjabi people make up one of the fastest-growing international populations in North Carolina. Meet and

befriend our Punjabi neighbors by shopping at a South Asian store, eating at one of their restaurants or going to one of their many festivals throughout the year.

God brings the Urdu people to us from Pakistan and parts of northwest India. The Urdu people make up some of the more prominent Muslims in the Islamic world as well as some of the more affluent internationals arriving in North America. Because of their prominence and affluence, they often own the mosques in their communities throughout North Carolina, though they

often do not make up a majority of the people who worship there. Even with a reputation as the spiritual elite, the Urdu people welcome

interfaith dialogue. Visit local mosques and Islamic groceries, develop genuine friendships, and accept the invitation to share the gospel in interfaith dialogue with our Urdu neighbors.

God brings the Vietnamese people to us from the country of Vietnam in Southeast Asia, occupying the entire eastern seacoast of the Indochinese Peninsula. The Vietnamese people mostly speak the Vietnamese language and practice the Mahayana tradition of Buddhism or Roman Catholicism. In North Carolina, the Vietnamese people have a great entrepreneurial

spirit. They will open local nail salons, Vietnamese cuisine restaurants and local Asian grocery stores. One of their favorite

pastimes is billiards. Consider how you might use your time at a local nail salon or billiard hall to build friendships and share the good news of the gospel with our Vietnamese neighbors.
