If I told you that part of my BraggJam was spent defending a possi-ble home intrusion somewhere in

the Shirley Hills area of Macon witha cab driver and a 50. Cal DesertEagle handgun, you’d be wrong notto believe me. While many wereshaking their behinds to MixmasterMike I was establishing a beachheadwith an overzealous taxi driver at afriends house who had a “late nightknocker” going on with her newbaby inside and her husband out oftown. We didn’t’ find anyone, butwe almost certainly scared the hellout of the neighbors. I can’t tell you

how wonderful Bragg Jam was, nothaving to run around and put outfires during it. And the board, whichhas its fair share of newbies, did agreat job putting the event on.While numbers probably won’t beannounced for a few more weeksyet, I think it’s safe to say that thisyears’ Bragg Jam event was up therewith the best of them and you can betthey are already thinking about howto top it next year. Be thankful thereare people like them among you.And to the baby I potentially saved, you can thank me later.

The things making our world just a little bit better | by brad evansWe LikeMy mother just turned 70 years old,and we went to our favorite localrestaurant the Downtown Grill tocelebrate. A lot of relatives who Ihadn’t seen in a long time werethere, some of whom were reallyclose with our cousin, SherriffBuford Pusser. He’s the guy por-trayed in the movie Walking Tall, and though he was of very question-able characther, he was one meanson of a bitch. After the Dixie Mafiahad killed his wife and shot him inthe face with a shotgun, all four gun-men and the guy who paid for the hitwere found dead. Pusser was never

charged, but I got some really juicydetails on what happened to themfrom a favorite uncle of mine whogrew up with Buford. It was so fun Ialmost forgot to sing “HappyBirthday.”

I just downloaded Donald RayPollack’s new book which has beenpretty damn good so far.If Pollock’s powerful short story col-lection Knockemstiff, named afterhis real life hometown, was a punchto the jaw, his follow-up, The Devilall the Time, a novel set in the vio-lent soul-numbing towns of southernOhio and West Virginia, feels closer

to a mule’s kick, and how he drawsthese folks and their inevitably hope-less lives without pity is what thekick’s all about. Willard Russell isback from the war, on a Greyhoundbus passing through Meade, Ohio, in1945 when he falls for a pretty wait-ress in a coffee ship. He has a son,Arvin, but is still haunted by thePacific. And while Willard teaches hisonly son some serious survival skills(“You just got to pick the right time,”he tells him about getting back atbullies. “They’s a lot of no-goodsonofabitches out there"), happinessis still elusive. I love the South.

LISTEN UP TO DEAN BROWNName a song you’ve listened to in the past 24 hours.A live recording of my Saturday night set.

What was the first album you bought with your ownmoney? 'The 50 Pound Dub Plate' by Dean Brown. Itsavailable at our local shows and will soon be available @reverbnation & CD Baby. Why? Support independentmusic, innovative original artists and Macon music!

Name a band our readers should know about. Deeproots reggae because I see the need to fill a void, and I wantto reawaken something ancient in all of us. But its obviousthat I love all kinds of music and its embraced by all musiclovers. The music becoming even more organic, fiery andunpredictable but always timeless and anchored by greatarrangements and catchy songwriting and could go elec-tronic at any moment and does every now and then.

What band T Shirt do you wear proudly? I am in need of cool T-Shirts and would wear anybody's shirt. But I actu-ally being wearing the 'STAY SUPERIOR' T-shirt by TommySuperior who plays guitar with me, records his own projects and tours with several local artists including Floco Torres.

Where do you like to hang out in Macon? My favoritehang out spot in Macon is downtown, and then theOcmulgee National Park.

Reggae artist Dean Brown fronts the Macon band, DubShak, and takes a little timeto talk to us about his love of music, his first album and the Indian Mounds.

BY SEAN PRITCHARD

Post Bragg Jam was more of a blur then I expected.I've spent the past 7 months preparing for one singleday, and the moment it was over I was left wonder-

ing what I would do with my time. So, I spent a few hourssearching around on Facebook, reading Out & About,Macon Magazine, and the 11th Hour and was quicklyreminded that Macon is a town that really never sleeps(despite what people might think). You just have to knowwhere to look and be able to keep up. That all being said,I'm fairly sure I'll be taking part in all these great localevents in the next two weeks.

On Friday, get your earplugs out and lace up yourdancing boots because two of the largest shows featuringhardcore, metal, and grind, plus tons of other genres will beDowntown. At The 567, you can check out national touringacts Greeley Estates on tour with The Plot In You and 7other bands, all for only $13.00. This is sure to be a hugeshow so if it's up your alley, be here. If you want to checkout something a bit different though, head down to CentralCity Skatepark for Summer Fest, which features over 12bands from all around the region. Both shows will be loud, sweaty, and packed so get there early and plan to stay late!

The following night will be something completely dif-ferent but possibly as entertaining. Macon Arts Alliancehosts their annual celebration "Taste of the Arts" at theTerminal Station. The event features "celebrity" chefs, astocked bar, a silent auction and much more. I missed outon Taste of the Arts last year and I'm not going to make thesame mistake this time around. I hear it's one of the liveli-est parties in town.

Get your fill of food and drink Saturday night butremember that one of Macon's fastest growing eventsSecond Sunday at Sunset starts at 7:00pm in WashingtonPark. This month Back City Woods (who will be playingwith Sequoyah Prep School for a special Double Bill onSept. 3rd at The Hummingbird) provides the soundtrack toyour evening. Remember that you can bring a picnic bas-

ket of your own or purchase a lunch for $5.00 at the park. Iurge you not to consume more then you can managebecause as soon as Second Sunday is over, the entire park(yes, I mean it) will be migrating to The Rookery as localOG (some might say that) Roger Riddle will be hosting aparty alongside Macon's Shawty Slim, who just returnedfrom a tour in ASIA with B.O.B. !

As all the schools start back in the next week, Maconwill receive a burst of energy and activity that we haven'tfelt all summer. I know that everyone at Mercer will bethrilled at the newest additions in the College Corridor inthe lower level of the new lofts (Designer Tan, Fountain ofJuice, and Margaritas). With the return of students comeeven more events for you to choose from and a larger, more diverse crowd for you to socialize with.

I'm sure everyone will be busy the next week withpreparing for the year to come but that's not to say therearen't fun things to do around town. Without a doubt, I'll beheaded to The 567 to catch the latest tunes from Macon'sfavorite songstress Oh Dorian as she takes the stage withlocals Whale Bone and two up-and-coming Atlanta acts,Oryx & Crake and Spirits and The Melchizedek Children.Oh Dorian will be playing a set of brand new songs, aswill Whale Bone so that's more then enough reason tomake it out and support local and regional talent.

Mag Tard writes and plays original songsof the Rock and Roll variety right here fromMacon, Georgia. Chris is the lead vocalist andplays the electric guitar. Justin plays bass andhas his own band Trendlenberg. Vinnie is left-handed and often likes to release his rage on abackwards drumset. And last but not least Danplays the sax, while Miles is on the drums andJustin on the bass.

Soulshine @ The Hummingbirdoulshine, Macon Ga's Allman Brothers TributeBand, was founded by musician StanKillingsworth to recreate the awe and majestyof the Allman Brothers live performances. Bycombining the talents of some MiddleGeorgia's finest musicians, Soulshine, hasreceived praise from fans and critics alike. Notonly do they perform the more popular AllmanBrothers tunes, they perform the more lengthyand experimental pieces. Soulshine's perform-ances are characterized by blistering guitarsolos, soulful singing, a tight rhythm section, and wild improvisation

Back ‘N Black @ Wild Wing CaféBack N Black are on a mission. These badboys have one goal. To drive the adrenalinefueled hellride that is an AC/DC concert rightup in your...face. Angus ripping through hissolos in his schoolboy uniform (UNTIL THESTRIPTEASE!), Brian's larynx shreddingvocals, Malcolms sledgehammer riffs and theclockwork thunder of Cliff and Phil's relentlessrhythm section. These boys deliver the goodswith... a set list that spans over 3 decadesserved up loud, hot and nasty! All the favorites

from Back In Black, Highway To Hell, TheRazors Edge , Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap,For Those About To Rock We Salute You...

SAT. AUG 13Echospeed @ The HummingbirdWhen you need your 80’s fix and only the bestwill do, echospeed is the band you need!Playing the hits of the 80’s for nearly 20 years. The Godfather of 80’s cover bands. Simpleenough.... No costumes, wigs or gimmicks!

The Skeeterz @ AP’s HideawayCollectively, The Skeeterz have played exten-sively throughout Georgia. They have honed their craft and operate as a very tight, nearly flawless unit. They leave excited, happyfans wherever they play. The band also just wonthe “Battle of the Baddest Bands” to win a cov-eted spot at September’s Heroes Music Fest.

FRI. AUG 19Scott Little Band @ Friday Fest,Third Street Park6-9 pm. Free event! Dine, shop and sip down-town and enjoy a free concert in Third Street

Park. This storytelling four piece band has morethan succeeded in their goal of making realmusic. Pulling from influences such as Haggardand Parsons, they make music the old-fashionedway, they live it…then they play it.

Tokyo Spa @ Billy’s ClubhouseTOKYO SPA is a group of seasoned musiciansplaying an eclectic mix of rock cover songscovering the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and NOW.Everything from Peter Gabriel to 311, Billy Idolto U2, Pink Floyd to The White Stripes!!They're a great party band; and a happy endingis guaranteed.

SAT. AUG 20Oh Dorian @ The 567 with WhaleBone Oh Dorian seemingly crept out ofnowhere, moving quickly from tiny dive bars tofamed listening rooms like Eddie’s Attic andopening gigs for acts like The Indigo Girls andModern Skirts. The power of her voice ismatched only by her seriousness and dedicationas an artist. At first sound, she’s as morose asinger as we’ve ever heard. Then comes herlaugh, boomingly loud like a human foghorn, and we knew for sure she’s our kind of people.

18 AUGUST 11 - 25, 2011

Icertainly learned some valuable lessonsfrom the most recent City elections. Firstand foremost, I am grateful not to have

had an opponent since that would have mademe part of a divisive and tension-chargedseveral weeks of campaigning. Second, Imay need to hang up my hat as a politicalprognosticator. Citing the racial breakdownof registered voters in the City, I predictedthat, after election day, Robert Brown wouldbe in a run-off with Robert Reichert andRobert Brown would end up as Mayor. Ofcourse I also predicted that two incumbentCouncil members would lose their seats.Only one did while two others came close.

So what happened to Robert Brown?First, he told me afterwards that he had noone to blame but himself. He didn’t resort toallegations of conspiracies or vote-buying orconvoluted explanations that point the fingerat someone else. In short, he was gracious indefeat. I had political friends in Atlanta whocalled me on election night for some kind ofexplanation of what happened to RobertBrown who has, for decades, been the best

political tactician and vote-counter in middleGeorgia. After a great deal of contempla-tion, I think I have an answer – RobertBrown hasn’t changed but the electorate has.

Even taking into considera-tion several self-inflicted gaffeswhich hurt him, those alone wouldnot have cost him victory in priorelections. But in previous years, his elec-torate still relied heavily upon opinion lead-ers, ministers, block captains, and the tradi-tional way of getting voters to the polls. Inthis day of social media, instant newsreports, blast emails, and the constant barrageof news both local and external, we’ve cometo expect a personal invitation to vote. If wecan’t shake the candidate’s hand, we at leastexpect him or her to ask us personally for ourvote in an expensive television ad, a full-colorbrochure in our mailbox, a recorded robo-call(which I detest), or an earnest Facebookappeal re-posted from our friends and family. It is no longer sufficient to have severaldegrees of separation between us and the can-didate. So, if you can’t afford all those elec-tronic advantages, chances are you aren’tgoing to be elected. The days are over whena populist candidate such as Jimmy Carter (nomatter what you think of him) could rise from

obscurity to the White House with littlemoney but lots of volunteers. Althoughmoney alone won’t elect a candidate (remem-ber Steve Forbes and Mitt Romney?), now thelack of money will make it almost impossible(e.g., Ralph Nader and Dennis Kucinich).

One of my neighbors told me that Imust be embarrassed to have backed RobertBrown after he didn’t even make the runoff, and I replied honestly that I don’t offer my

support based only upon who the eventualwinner might be. After all, I endorsed mygood friend Dubose Porter for governor lastyear and he trailed considerably on primaryday. But of all the candidates, as a Dublinresident whose sons went to school here inMacon, Dubose was the candidate most like-ly to help middle Georgia (with the currentGovernor and Lieutenant Governor fromGainesville and the Speaker of the Housefrom Ellijay, look for lots of economicdevelopment in Georgia’s mountains). Thesame reasoning held true for my support ofRobert Brown. When the GeorgiaDepartment of Transportation threatened tobuild a super highway through my neighbor-hood, while others talked about signing peti-tions and organizing committees, RobertBrown went directly to GDOT and stoppedthe project in its tracks. I don’t forget thatkind of service even if others do. So was I

embarrassed? Not on your life. I’m stillproud to call him my friend.

One thing that kicked up a lot of print-ing ink in this election was a raunchy cam-paign flyer which was obviously directed atblack voters and distributed by unnamedpersons who were probably also black. Theidea of that kind of literature is certainlynothing new. The first time I ran for office Iopposed a black incumbent and had exactly

the samekind ofb r o c h u r edistributed

against me. When you print a photo of menext to a photo of someone who is black, it’spretty obvious the point you are trying tomake. What made this one different was thelewd nature of the drawing that was meant todepict the Telegraph officials who also hosta television and radio show whose personalpolitical preferences are never a secret.

I wouldn’t even hazard a guess as to thevictors in the two run-off races. About aweek after election day, I asked RobertBrown what the Mayor said when he calledto ask for his support. He replied that, notonly had the Mayor not called him, butReichert announced that he didn’t wantRobert Brown’s support or the support ofvoters who cast their vote for Brown. I sup-pose the Mayor can afford to scoff at 9% ofthe vote in the assumption he won’t need itin the run-off. But then, as the readers of the11th Hour know, I’ve been wrong before.

Take a big deep breath Middle Georgia!Tuesday, August 16th, the day of thehighly anticipated runoff in two hotly

contested races that can mean the life or deathof Macon and Bibb County is finally upon us.As I have said in previous columns, I as theFirst Vice-Chair of the Bibb CountyRepublican Party cannot endorse any of thecandidates that are running as our party doesnot have a horse in these races. We do have acommon goal with the community in large:Government that is run ethically and morallycorrect for our people no matter which partythey happen to belong to.

Two of the candidates running haveshown themselves to have the common inter-est at heart and have shown they can crossparty lines in a cooperative manner: MayorRobert Reichert and former City CouncilPresident Miriam Paris. Further, they have runtheir individual campaigns in this cycle basedon facts, agenda and platform, not on fear, hateand dishonesty as the other two candidateshave: former Mayor C. Jack Ellis and formerState Representative David Lucas. Now in

defense of Mr. Lucas, it has been his wife Elainewho has been his hatchetwoman, spewinghatred and false innuendo continuously. (If hehad a shred of dignity, he would distance him-self from her statements.) Ellis on the otherhand has been spreading his own propaganda, claiming that the city finances under his watchwere in his words “nothing short of genius”.Hmmmm….I guess it could be considered“genius” in the sense of a plan devised by AlCapone or Bernie Madoff. Quite honestly thefact that he thinks that since when he started inoffice with $28 million in the general fund andleft with $16 million is nothing short of geniusshould in itself disqualify him from office.Thomas Thomas, Macon’s ChiefAdministrative Officer also states that whenEllis took office the fund balance of the city, which is the sum total of the city’s assets minusthe liabilities, was $10.6 million dollars in 2000and was in the hole $3.5 million dollars by thetime Ellis whisked himself away to Ghana. Tothis, Ellis says Mr. Thomas is “dead wrong. Hedoesn’t know what he’s talking about.” So thepeople of Macon are supposed to take yourword for it Jack? Fool us once…shame onyou….Fool us twice…shame on us. Fool usthree times we’re all just fools.

In past articles I’ve addressed the fact that

we, the Bibb County GOP, have been accused, primarily by Mrs. Lucas and former MayorEllis, of being the prime motivators and moneybehind the candidacies of Mayor Reichert,Miriam Paris and also Chris Horne. Thesecharges are out and out lies formulated to “rallythe troops” of unknowing voters who blindlyfollow candidates whose whole platforms arebased on weak and shifting sand and lackingany substance. However, is it not in the bestinterest of our community to stand behind thelogical choices to govern us and encouragepeople to vote for can-didates who haveintegrity and haveshown that they havethe best interest of thepopulace in mindinstead of their ownselfish agenda basedsolely on getting elect-ed so that they can takeour money and give usnothing in return butempty promises, cor-ruption and moreproblems that the next poor candidate has tomop up? If the Republican Party had candi-dates in these races I would certainly not beencouraging voters to cross party lines. Wehave no other dogs in the hunt so why notinsure that the candidates who are elected arethose who will compromise with people of ourparty while not robbing us blind?

In the future, we as a party must correctthe problem that we have in this election cycle:lack of candidates. There is no question of this.We must encourage people to do their civic

duty and step up to the plate and run for publicoffice. But let us look at why people are hesi-tant to put their necks on the line. Most peoplethink a Republican can’t win but in a fewprecincts in Bibb County, but Charlie Bishopproved them wrong when he won Bibb CountyCommission Chairman. The other main rea-son that people are skittish about running iscontinuing to be shown in the elections that willbe decided on the 16th: some candidates willdo anything to win at the expense of someoneelse. They will lie and say anything just for a few

votes, just as ElaineLucas did in her raceagainst fellowDemocrat ChrisHorne. Some willeven cheat. (I’vebeen told that absen-tee ballot requests arerunning at twice thenormal rate. I highlyencourage someoneto look into this asthis usually meansthat some candidates

are doing very well within the corpse communi-ty.) Something else can be remembered: Theunbeatable can be beaten as Horne almostdethroned Queen Elaine of Shurlington onlylosing by 126 votes, most of which might havebeen suffering from rigor mortis.

The future of Macon and Bibb Countyliterally hinges on this election and the deci-sions that you as voters make at the ballot box.I sincerely hope that you keep that in mindwhen you vote and take your responsibility toour community seriously.

Bragg Jam was debaucherous anddepraved. In a good way. I woke upSaturday morning (early afternoon)

with a phone full of texts instructing me not toput the pictures I had taken up online. Thenight before had been the kick off party for allthe sponsors and contributors of the event. For me the night had been a blur of cateredfood, Newcastle and mischievous antics. The highlight of the event had been the sexysmooth music provided by Yacht RockSchooner. Later that afternoon I had lunchwith DJ VH1 at The Rookery, we'd met thenight before. He was an interesting guy, Ifound out he has a degree in literature andwrites for Esquire. I also learned the phrase"disco nap."

The rest of my day was spent runningaround taking pictures of the various musicalacts that Bragg Jam brought us. I felt impor-tant because I had an all access pass with"official event photographer" written on theback in blue sharpie. I started the day offwith Delta Saints at the Capitol and then fol-lowed it up with the amazing line up at The567. The Delta Saints were an astoundingmix of blue-eyed soul and dive bar blues. I'dlove to see more music like this come toMacon, I'm actually in the works to bookAtlanta Neo-Cabaret darlings Blair Crimminsand the Hookers sometime in the future. Ifyou saw the Saints and liked what they weredoing check out the return of Megan Jean andthe KFB at The Rookery on the 26th.

In following with their flawless record ofbooking amazing indie coolness, The 567 wasthe place to be for Bragg Jam if you were withyour family or just wanted to hear the futureof Indie Rock. In attendance was myfavorite local singer-songwriter Amy Godwinas well as Nashville's Parachute Musical. Igot some great shots from The 567, but could-n't even get in the door at The Hummingbird. The place was packed! The day had beenrelatively relaxed, I was gearing up for thatevening and I was probably going to need adisco nap…

If you're into Hip-Hop, like real Hip-Hop, like robots and sneakers and turntablesand New York Fat Caps on Krylon Icy Grapespray paint; then you know who Mix MasterMike is. If you don't then you missed theabsolute dopest thing to go down in Maconthis year. The greatest turntablist sinceGrandmaster Flash, the backing DJ for theBeastie Boys played at Asylum. I shouldtake this moment to thank Jamie Weatherfordfor actually talking Mike into letting me onstage during his set. Mike's contract statedthat only security was allowed on stage dur-ing his performance, but somehow Jamieworked his magic and at the last minute gotMix Master Mike to let me take pictures fromthe stage. I almost fell out. Then Mikedropped "We Are Your Friends" by Justiceand I almost passed out. It was on the top 5of the "Craziest Things That Ever Happenedin Dylan's Life" list.

The set was insane, the whole thing wasthe perfect end to an amazing day. AfterMike's set was over my friends and I dancedto DJ VH1 who played until 3AM. If youknow me, or if you read my column regularlyyou know that two of my favorite genres ofmusic are Hip-Hop and Electro. Downtownneeds more of both, which is why a huge

highlight after Bragg Jam was the followingFirst Friday when local emcee Al K!ng playedat The Rookery. The show was awesome,Al's level of energy and lyrical ability issomething all emcees should aspire to.Thanks to Flocco Torres and MagTard's ChrisNylund for keeping the show organized andkeeping the levels balanced, we couldn't havedone it without you guys. The only criticismI had for the show was Al's DJ; if I wanted to

see some skinnyhipster messing with a record player I'd havestayed in Atlanta.

On a more serious and less self-deprecat-ing note, it seems as though some local mediaoutlets have been taking a sensationalisticapproach to the recent murder in our town. Iam not downplaying, by any means, thetragedy of a young and beautiful life lost atthe hands of a heinous animal. However,

allowing a personal and isolatedincident to keep you from enjoying life ischeating yourself. Investigators involvedwere quick to act and handle the situation. As the weather cools more amazing showsand parties and businesses and things to dowill be happening in Downtown Macon, notallowing yourself to enjoy it is letting themonster win. Just remember what Mos Defsaid about fear.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Q: If I didn’t vote in the July 19 primary, can I vote in the August 16 run-off electionfor mayor and the state senate seat? A: Why didn’t you vote? Okay, sorry. I shouldn’t answer a question with a question. (But ifyou live in East Macon… nevermind… I’m over it…) The short answer is yes. And you canvote again on November 8. By then, however, the attention will be ballot questions to approveSunday alcohol sales, and whether to approve a new SPLOST (i.e. – a “penny tax”). The cityand county have until August 15—the day before the run-off—to agree on a (heh, heh) con-solidated list of projects that the SPLOST would pay for, like recreation, repairing our stormwater system, and upgrading to a 800mhz radio system for emergency personnel. The ques-tion here is whether the county will insist on building a new courthouse again—likely the rea-son the last proposed SPLOST was defeated—or if they’ll go for renovations or moving toanother facility. But that’s another question for another column.

ANTI-SOCIAL MEDIA

There’s now a “Faux Miriam Paris” on Facebook and anti-Miriam Paris fan page (ironic,eh?) that makes a number of false allegations about the state senate hopeful and even mocksher physique. It seems to come from the same camp that produced the inflammatory andardently racist pamphlets in mid-July. Well, no matter who is behind it, if David Lucas hasan ounce of integrity, he’ll denounce it. Why? That’s the right thing to do. Whenever some-one who claimed to support me tried to make personal attacks or launch insults at his wife,Councilwoman Elaine Lucas, I shut it down, removing the comment and reminding folksto leave the name-calling to people who can’t do better.

THE LIST: ON THE ROAD...

The Mrs., Maddy and I spent the last week visiting friends in New York City and Easton,Pennsylvania. Just as before, I left jealous of Easton, which isn’t even a third our size. Theirdowntown area—aided by the same type of Main Street program that’s taking place inMacon now—is gorgeous and booming with shops, restaurants, a major tourist attraction

(it’s the Crayola Crayon Factory, which brings in 350,000 people a year), and a flourishingweekend farmer’s market. Here’s what I want to steal from them.#1) Think regionally. Easton is one of the three bigger cities in the Lehigh Valley, Allentonand Bethlehem being significantly larger, and about as far away from Easton as WarnerRobins and Milledgeville are from Macon. Instead of trying to go it alone, the LehighValley is marketed as an attraction—not just for tourists but for businesses, families, enter-tainment, etc. #2) Build a huge roundabout. They turned an old town square into a huge roundabout toslow traffic and create a central gathering area in the shadow of a Union soldier memorial.Could we do something like that with the intersection of MLK and Cherry Street? A round-about would make it safer for pedestrians to cross, connecting the other side of the road—Terminal Station, GA Sports Hall, GA Children’s Museum, Cherry Street Plaza, Tic Toc,etc—with downtown proper. We could even erect a memorial to honor our creative greatsof the past. Mayor Reichert wants to redirect truck traffic down on Seventh Street and aroundabout would almost certainly force that and give us a place to host more events, likethe growing market on Mulberry. #3) Print more lit. I love picking up rack cards, flyers, newspapers, brochures, maps andwhatever other free crap I can get when I’m in another city. Easton had tons of it from aguide to their downtown to marketing for their Riverfront Arts Festival to the localSustainable Business Network. Yeah, on one hand it’s clutter, but on the other, better-look-ing hand that has all the friends, you inform people and promote the perception that there’sa lot to do in this little berg. #4) We need a hero. Former heavyweight world champion Larry Holmes is a lifelongEaston resident, and he’s still their champion, investing in his hometown. He’s the celebri-ty face of their city, a subconscious bee in the bonnet of all Eastonians: “Hey, if we’re goodenough for Larry Holmes, we’re good enough for everyone.” He reflects that civic prideAND creates incentives for people to visit.

For all the famous people Macon has spawned, we haven’t really kept any here to repus. Our odes to our creative icons have been few and slow to come. We have a restaurantnamed Molly’s in a nod to Little Richard but where does a Little Richard fan go to reallyexperience the Architect of Rock n Roll in Macon? Not to the Douglass where they havehis face on the sidewalk. He never played there.

The same dilemma is true for almost all our greats. You wouldn’t know that JamesBrown ever set foot here, let alone cut his first demo, owned a recording studio or multiplerestaurants here. There’s no trace of Oscar-winning actor Melvyn Douglass or anything thathighlights the summer Tennessee Williams spent in Macon, inspiring the characters for“Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.”

At least now the Allmans now have the Big House. Otis Redding fans have a statueand this year’s (exciting) 70th birthday celebration in September, but I’d love to see more.(Why don’t we have a Soul Music Café?) We do have the Redding family, thank good-ness, and we’ve been blessed by the involvement of world class violinist Robert McDuffie, who has built a top notch conservatory at Mercer, hosted great concerts and brought hisMacon childhood buddy, REM’s Mike Mills. It’s a start, right?
