Installation and Operation

MBMC Portable Boring System Installation

NOTE: Before attaching the boring system to the workpiece clear your work area of all obstructions. Do not connect the power supply until the boring system is securely attached and ready for use.

Installation and Operation Precautions:

• The MBMC Portable Boring System is a precision, hand-fi tted machine. With proper use and maintenance it will give many years of trouble-free service. Do not hit any part with a hammer or other metal object. Do not try to force mating parts together. Do not over-tighten bolts and screws.

• Before setup and during operation of this machine, make sure all parts are properly lubricated. Fill the drive unit with 2 to 3 quarts (1.9 to 2.8 liters) of non-foaming 90W gear oil. Coat the bar, lead screw and bores of the components mounted on the bar with 90W gear oil. Lubricate all fi ttings and feed box gears with high-quality bearing grease.

• During operation keep chips and other material away from machine components. It is very important to keep the feed screw and feed screw slot clean. Chips and metal dust can cause excessive wear of the cutter head feed nuts.

• Whenever possible, use jack stands or other means to support the boring system components to assist in setup.

Installation

1. Before installing any boring system components, select the feed box gear setup for your application. The feed gear setup is dependant on your desired feed rate, rotation direction and feed screw threads per inch (TPI). Figure 1 shows the feed gear setup information for 4 and 8 TPI feed screws.

NOTE: When installing the boring system at any position other than horizontal, use a set collar to prevent the tool from sliding on the bar. The set collar may also be used for setting a specifi c depth. When machining in other than horizontal position, make sure to keep metal chips from entering boring system components.

2. Prepare the workpiece for mounting the boring system. The mounting setup must have a fl at mounting surface, perpendicular to the bore, to ensure accurate machining.

NOTE: When using a fi xture to mount the boring system, never weld directly to the mounting knee or bridge. Attach the mounting knee or bridge to the fi xture with hardware, and weld the fi xture to the workpiece.

3. Before installing the mounting bridge and mounting knees, determine the required clearance between the workpiece face and mounting bridge. To access the tool bit during operation, the tool bit must travel out of the workpiece bore. The setup may require a fi xture or blocks to provide space for the tool bit to completely clear the bore. The tool bit is positioned on one side of the cutter head, so the cutter head may be turned 180° to allow clearance away from the workpiece. See Figure 2.

Figure 2 - Tool Bit Access

4. Attach two mounting knees to the front and rear faces of the workpiece. Make sure the mounting knees are centered across the bore center, and within the adjustment range of the mounting bridge. See Figure 3.

Figure 3 - Attach Mounting Knees to Workpiece

5. Install the tail bearing (spherical or fi xed) onto the rear mounting bridge. Center the bridge and tail bearing assembly to the workpiece bore and install onto the mounting knees. Hand-tighten the four screws on the mounting bridge around the diameter of the tail bearing. See Figure 4.

NOTE: Use spherical bearings whenever possible for easier alignment of the boring bar to the bore centerline. When using a fi xed tail bearing on the rear bridge, and the drive head mounted directly to the front bridge, it is very important that the front and rear bridges are perpendicular to the boring bar. This will help eliminate excessive tension and binding of the fi xed bearing and drive head. The use of spherical bearings on the front and rear bridges will allow movement in all directions, eliminating tension and binding.

6. Install the drive head onto the front bridge. A spherical bearing may be used between the drive head and mounting bridge to assist in boring bar alignment. Align the center of the drive head with the center of the mounting bridge. Hand-tighten the four screws on the mounting bridge around the diameter of the drive head. See Figure 5.

9. To install a one-piece cutter head, remove the boring bar end cap, clamp nut, washers and bearing from the boring bar. Align the feed nut on the cutter head with the feed screw, and thread the feed screw into the brass nut with the feed box crank handle. Use the four set screws to snug the cutter head against the boring bar. Do not over-tighten, the cutter head must be able to travel with the feed screw. Install the end cap and hardware, and mounting bridge with tail bearing. Use the crank handle to move the cutter head to its approximate starting position in the bore. See Figure 8.
