    Introduction

    UCTI- APIIT is an acknowledged higher education university college in

    Malaysia specializing in the fields of technology. UCTI APIIT works close

    with the IT industry corporations such as Sapura Groups Corporation1

    Microsoft, Rational Rose, Prometric, EC_Council, eAct Technologies and

    EPSON2, so that the latest updates regarding technology based information

    corresponds with the syllabus of UCTI APIIT.

    Multimedia in UCTI APIIT

    Currently, there are several multimedia based programmes in UCTI APIIT.

    In the undergraduate Study programme, there are Computer Games

    Development & Web Media Technology Programmes and Media

    Programmes3. In the postgraduate study, there is the Multimedia Application

    Management programme4. As a leading university in the fields of technology,

    UCTI APIIT could focus more in developing multimedia applications

    systems that could benefit the university and the students both academically

    and reputational wise. Acknowledged UCTI APIIT multimedia application

    system such as the Bahasa Melayu Interactive Learning software and the

    Interactive Sign Language Generator for the Malaysian federation of Deaf

    system could be the foundation of multimedia based projects and hopefully be

    the launching pad for more future multimedia projects.

    Problem Statement

    UCTI APIIT mostly open itself to any visitors who wish to come to the

    campus and view the university themselves. Majority of these people areMalaysian locals who wish to know more, see and experience the UCTI

    APIIT environment. Most of the time, these visitors would come during their

    free time usually after working hours or during the weekends. This is because;

    most of the visitors are working and cannot find any other free time to

    personally go to UCTI APIIT during working hours.

    Majority of the visitors coming to UCTI APIIIT are parents who wish to enroll

    their children to UCTI APIIT. They would like to get more information about

    UCTI APIIT and see the facilities that are provided here with their own eyes.

    Usually they would come during the weekends, and a member of UCTI

    APIIT staff will be allocated for them. The UCTI APIIT staff would personally

    guide them throughout the UCTI APIIT building. This means that a UCTI

    APIIT staff should always be on standby even on weekends to greet the

    visitors as the visitors usually come at this time. This would be a problem for

    the staff as they have to work even during their weekend vacations. The UCTI

    APIIT management will also have to bear substantial employee overtime

    working cost for these weekend staff thus adding up to unnecessary cash

    outflow.

    To inform the students regarding any class events or curricular activities, a

    bulletin board is placed at the lobby, in front of the elevator of UCTI APIIT.

    The reason it is placed here, is that information or notice is more accessible to

    the UCTI APIIT students as the location of the board is situated in the centre

    of students gathering area.

    Although UCTI APIIT is known as one of the leading technology university in

    Malaysia, it still uses bulletin boards the old fashion way; which is by sticking

    notes on a big bulletin board found in the lobby. These notes are rarely

    updated and usually in a messy condition after a few changes of note

    postings. Furthermore, the university has to change the board every year due

    to the deteriorating condition of the boards after usage.

    Proposed Application Design

    A virtual university guide and online notice board multimedia application

    system is proposed to overcome the problems of having to manually guide

    visitors and to reduce stick-on notices. The application will consist of a virtual

    3-Dimensional outlook floor plan of the UCTI APIIT building facilities such as

    classrooms, lecture halls, computer labs, administration office, library,

    cafeteria, lecturer hall and even washrooms. Users can also post notes which

    can be displayed at the main page of the application.

    Objectives

    1. The main function of the multimedia application enables a virtual

    guide and gives visitors a visual outlook of UCTI APIIT

    infrastructures and facilities using multimedia elements.

    2. Visitors accessing the application can view brief information about

    UCTI APIIT facilities.

    3. The application can be used as a marketing tool to promote UCTI

    APIIT to the public mainly prospect students and professionals and

    can alsohelp promote UCTI- APIIT during conventions and higher

    learning education fair by coming out with an advanced multimedia

    product.

    4. Visitors will be encourage to experience the technology of the

    Multimedia system thus feel more comfortable to tour around the

    university unguided by UCTI APIIT personnel.

    5. Help the management staff of UCTI-APIIT by assisting them with

    certain tasks such giving out notices and also announcements

    which can be displayed on the multimedia application system.

    6. Expose the current UCTI-APIIT students with new multimedia

    technology. This will encourage them to be techno savvy and make

    them more updated with current events.

    Target Users and User Requirements Specification.

    These are the target users and the user requirement specification for the

    multimedia application.

    Age group : 18-45 years old

    User Description : UCTI APIIT visitors mainly consists of working

    professionals, family members, and prospect students. UCTI APIIT staffs,

    lecturers and students who wish to make a notice and public announcements.

    User Objective and Needs:

    User may be looking for information about UCTI-APIIT which includes:

    1. Floor plan or map of UCTI APIIT facilities and also room lists. A 3-

    D animation video will point and direct the user from Main lobby to

    any location the user wishes to go. This includes:

    Development Methodology:

    System Methodology adopted

    The system methodology that will be used in the production of the multimedia

    kiosk is the Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement and Evaluate (ADDIE)

    model. It will be further discussed in the content subtopic and will be based

    on the multimedia project lifecycle and constraints.

    Content Overview and Analysis

    Project title: UCTI-APIIT Virtual Map and Digital Notice

    Project: A multimedia application system which can be used by UCTI

    APIIT visitor to access the map of the university building.

    Concept: A multimedia application which is attractive, simple to use, with

    minimal pages, direct and straight forward information yet has high depth of

    content, and has a high level of interactivity.

    Outlook: Professional, modern outlook, almost similar design with other

    UCTI APIIT product such as the website and the programme booklets to

    standardized the design, design using the mortised application philosophy

    approach which incorporates high level of usability and eye catching

    multimedia elements.

    Multimedia Content:

    Main page

    Intro Movie

    An introduction to UCTI- APIIT and background of UCTI-APIIT with pictures of

    the building. A short movie introduction is included and will play in loops with

    the system. This will include text base elements for the background

    introduction and a short 2D animated video with sound for the intro movie.

    Then it will be directed straight to the main page with menus.

    Main Page

    The main page consists of a 3-D floor plan of UCTI APIIT building with list of

    rooms. Main page includes a button which opens a new window which can

    be typed on for notices and memo.

    Content media collection:

    Included are the media contents that need to be collected for the multimedia

    application.

    Video:- An edited video of UCTI APIIT photomontage for the

    intro move.

    - A video of some of the facilities in the university.

    - Product advertisements which can be done internally

    or outsource to other content developer.

    Audio: - Sound effects for the navigational buttons

    - Music background for the whole multimedia content.

    Graphic: - A picture gallery of UCTI-APIIT building

    - Vector designed graphics for the layout interface

    - Pictures of events being held for the events features.

    - Pictures of the every life in UCTI - APIIT

    - Graphic billboards or advertisements

    3D animation- A floor plan map of UCTI-APIIT similar to the ones found

    in shopping complex.

    - 3D animation of how to go around the UCTI APIIT from

    the main lobby.

    Text: - An introduction to UCTI-APIIT text information similar

    to the website.

    - The navigational links will be done using large size

    textual icons for easier accessibility.

    Justification of Using ADDIE Methodology

    After planning, it was decided that this approach was much more suitable for

    creating the multimedia application. It is suitable because, it aligns with the

    procedures of the production pipeline which consists of three part; pre-

    production, production, and post production. The evaluation aspect is

    important and is included in every steps found in each of the three production

    process.

    Navigational Structure

    Starts with a movie intro, then will be automatically directed to the main page

    after 10 seconds idle. As also the main page will automatically be redirected

    back to the intro movie after 10 seconds of idle time.

    The interface of the main page will consists of 6 menu button with each has its

    own set of sub menu. The menu button will be grouped according to the levels

    of the UCTI APIIT building, from basement to top floor. If any menu is

    opened and is idle for 10 seconds, the menu will be automatically redirected

    back to the main page.

    The sub menu will represent the facilities found in each of the levels in the

    UCTI APIIT building.
