Bracknell Schools' Baseball Teamwon the right to be called NationalSchools Champions on Sundaywhen they won a close and tenseNational Schools Final againstCalderdale Schools from Halifaxat Hemel Hempstead.
The game looked to be a tight oneas both pitchers battled through tothe middle of the third with noscore and only two base-hits.Between them the pitchers,Bracknell's Imran Khan andCalderdale's Mellor, struck out 13of the first 15 batters.
Calderdale took the initiative intpe bottom of the third. Gilmore'sdouble scored Thompson, who·had been walked. Bracknell'scatcher, Simon Welch, judged adifficult fly ball to secure the firstout and Khan weighed in with hissixth strike-out for the second.Wood's two out single scored bothGilmore and Bruce before Khanand,. Gar, Sargent combined forthe final out at first base.

Khan earned the win with acomplete game, striking out 13.Richard Bannister led the offencewith two hits, including a double, from three at bats. Robert Smithalso hit a double in his only at bat.Bracknell's other hits came fromSargent, Coke and Spurdle.
Calderdale played very well andtheir pitching was excellent. Ofthe seven runs only two wereeamed, and it was therefore thedefence that suffered in thepressure packed game, makingthree errors to Bracknell's none.
Both teams were presented withcommemorative trophies byStephen Herbert, President of theBritish Baseball Federation, whocongratulated both programmeson an excellent game. The rulesof the game allowed no more thanfive runs an inning to stop oneteam running away with the gamein one inning. The fact that thisrule was not reqUired and thatthree outs were recorded in everyone of the twelve half inningsdemonstrates the superbdefensive nature of the game.
