WARNING DO NOT BREATHE DUST AND CUT ONLY IN WELL VENTILATED AREA James Hardie products contain sand, a source of respirable crystalline silica which is considered by some international authorities to be a cause of cancer from some occupational sources. Breathing excessive amounts of respirable silica dust can also cause a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease called silicosis, and has been linked with other diseases. Some studies suggest smoking may increase these risks. During installation or handling: (1) work in outdoor areas with ample ventilation; (2) minimise dust when cutting by using either ‘score and snap’ knife, fibre cement shears or, where not feasible, use a HardieBlade ® saw blade and dust- reducing circular saw attached to a HEPA vacuum; (3) warn others in the immediate area to avoid breathing dust; (4) wear a properly-fitted, approved dust mask or respirator (e.g. P1 or P2) in accordance with applicable government regulations and manufacturer instructions to further limit respirable silica exposures. During clean-up, use HEPA vacuums or wet cleanup methods - never dry sweep. For further information, refer to our installation instructions and Material Safety Data Sheets available at www.jameshardie.com.au. FAILURE TO ADHERE TO OUR WARNINGS, MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS, AND INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS MAY LEAD TO SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH. STORAGE AND HANDLING To avoid damage, all James Hardie building products should be stored with edges and corners of the sheets protected from damage. James Hardie building products must be installed in a dry state and protected from weather during transport and storage. The stored product must be laid flat under cover on a smooth level surface clear of the ground to avoid exposure to water, moisture, etc. Protective gloves must be worn while handling sheets. CUTTING OUTDOORS 1. Position cutting station so wind will blow dust away from the user or others in working area. 2. Use a dust reducing circular saw equipped with HardieBlade ® saw blade and HEPA vacuum extraction. SANDING/DRILLING/OTHER MACHINING When sanding, drilling or machining you should always wear a P1 or P2 dust mask and warn others in the immediate area. IMPORTANT NOTES 1. Page 2: Made in Australia · flooring involves the installation of two components in addition to the underlying frame: COMPONENT 1: Installation of Sheets Component 1 is the Scyon™ Secura™

SCOPEThis Installation Guide covers the use of Scyon™

Secura™ Exterior flooring sheets in a tiled residentialdeck application. It does not contain all informationrelevant for constructing a deck.

Constructing a deck using Scyon™ Secura™ Exteriorflooring involves the installation of two components inaddition to the underlying frame:

COMPONENT 1: Installation of Sheets

Component 1 is the Scyon™ Secura™ Exterior flooringsheet. This sheet is installed over durable timber orcorrosion resistant light gauge steel frames in a squaredor staggered pattern, see Table 2 and AS 4654.2.

COMPONENT 2: Waterproofing and Finishes(Supplied by third party)Component 2 is a third party supplied and warrantedwater based waterproofing and tiling system for useover installed Scyon™ Secura™ Exterior flooring.Companies offering such a system at the time ofwriting are mentioned on page 4. One of the keypurposes of component 2 is to keep the deck water tight.

To obtain the third party warranty, the entirewaterproofing system must be installed from thesame manufacturer. All components must be fullycompatible with one another.

There are two types of decks: 1.Water resistant decks, and2. Waterproof decks with a:

a) Liquid applied membrane; orb) Flexible sheet membrane and mortar bed

The following table outlines the main differencesbetween a water resistant and waterproofed deck.

* and installed to manufacturer’s specifications.

NOTE: Even if you do not require a waterproof deck, it is recommended that the deck be made as watertight as possible (ie that water penetrations beminimised) as it can lead to damage to the framesuch as timber dry rot.

For more information on suitable waterproofing andfinishes including installation instructions and warrantyon Scyon™ Secura™ Exterior flooring, refer to thewaterproofing companies referenced on page 4.

DESIGNComplianceAll design and construction must comply with theappropriate requirements of the current BuildingCode of Australia (BCA) and other applicableregulations and standards current at the time ofconstruction.

ResponsibilityThe specifier or other party responsible for the projectmust ensure that the details in this specification areappropriate for the intended application and thatadditional detailing is performed for specific design orany areas that fall outside the scope of this specification.

FIGURE 1 FRAME PREPARATION

FIGURE 2 DRAINAGE

BalustradeThe balustrade upright supports must be fixed tothe structural frame and not to the Scyon™

Secura™ Exterior flooring. The balustrade and itssupports must not compromise thewaterproofing and durability of the deck. Thespecifier is responsible for any water issues thatcould occur due to the penetration of thebalustrade uprights including fixings, flashing, waterproofing and sheet support.

TolerancesIn order to achieve an acceptable finish, it isimperative that framing is straight and true. Asuggested tolerance is 3-4mm over 3 meters in all directions.

James Hardie is not a waterproofing expert andtherefore the specifier is responsible for carrying outthe necessary design and detailing to ensure thecorrect waterproofing and finish are in accordancewith waterproofing manufacturer’s standard warrantedspecifications and relevant codes and regulations.

LoadingScyon™ Secura™ Exterior flooring sheets arestructurally designed to withstand the domestic andresidential activities for self-contained dwellings(Category A1) of Table 3.1 of AS/NZS 1170.1 -‘Structural design actions - Permanent, imposedand other actions’ of 1.8kN concentrated load anda UDL (Uniformly Distributed Load) capacity of 2kPaat the floor joist spacing, outlined in Table 1. Forgreater loadings and commercial deckingapplications, refer to the James Hardie technicalteam for specific advice on 13 11 03.

Fastener DurabilityFasteners must have the appropriate level of durabilityrequired for the intended project. This is of particularimportance in coastal areas and areas subject to salt spray and other corrosive environments.

Fasteners must be fully compatible with all othermaterials that they are in contact with to ensure thedurability and integrity of the assembly.

James Hardie recommends a minimum Class 3fastener for all decks. Contact fastener manufacturersfor more information.

FRAMINGGeneralFloor joists must be 45mm wide.

All sheet square edges which includes movementjoints, must be continuously supported by framing.

Furthermore, adequate ventilation in the floorspaceis recommended.

Timber FramingUse of timber framing must be in accordance withAS 1684 - ‘Residential timber-framed construction’,treated dry kiln timber or durable hardwood, thebuilding code of Australia and the framingmanufacturer’s specifications.

NOTE: To help protect against moisture ingress and rot, always prime the end grain of timber members, togetherwith surfaces which are permanently concealed andmay be in contact with other building materials.

Steel FramingUse of steel framing must be in accordance with NASH standard for residential and low rise steelframing Part 1 and the framing manufacturer’sspecifications. Framing members must be in therange 0.75mm to 1.9mm BMT (base metal thickness). The steel framing must have the appropriate level ofdurability required to prevent corrosion.

Step DownThere must be a step down (at least 50mm butpreferably 150mm) from the door sill level to thefinished surface of the deck to adequatelyweatherproof the entry door, particularly if it is subjectto rain and wind. Refer to relevant building regulationsand codes which may specify a larger step down.

COMPONENT 2: Waterproofing and Finishes (Supplied by third party)Component 2 is a third party supplied and warranted waterproofing and tiling system which is installed over the installed Scyon™ Secura™ Exterior flooring.

The two types of decks discussed in this section include:

1. A water resistant deck2. Waterproof decks:

a) OPTION 1: Liquid membrane methodb) OPTION 2: Flexible sheet membrane/mortar method

NOTE: This section DOES NOT contain allinformation relevant for waterproofing and is to beused as a guide only. It is the responsibility of thespecifier to carry out the necessary design anddetailing to ensure the waterproofing and finishsatisfy all relevant codes, regulations and systemwaterproofing manufacturer recommendations.

WATER RESISTANT DECKSIt is recommended that the deck be made as water tight as possible (i.e that water penetration be minimised) as it can lead to damage such as timberdry rot or building damage. This includes all sheetjoints, junctions and fasteners.

During the installation of the ScyonTM SecuraTM

Exterior flooring sheets, the factory applied sealer issubject to damage from tools, material and traffic. Itis therefore recommended, that a single primingcoat of Ardex WPM 300, Parchem Emer-Proof WBPrimer or equivalent is applied with a roller overwater resistant decks before tiles are installed.

When tiling direct to sheets with no mortar bed, the5mm butt joints between all adjacent sheets act ascontrol joints. These control joints must be carriedup through the tiled finish, see Figure 13.

WATERPROOF DECKSSystem selectionTo achieve a, warranted, fully waterproof deck, requires a compatible and correctly installed thirdparty waterproofing system on top of the Scyon™

Secura™ Exterior flooring.

At the time of writing, the following third partywaterproofing companies have warranted and testedwaterproofing systems and technical specificationsfor use over Scyon™ Secura™ Exterior flooring.

Ardex Australia Pty Ltd Parchem Construction Supplies Bostik Australia Pty Ltd Crommelin ParexDavco Australia
