Workshop 24 Based in a shop which had been empty for nearly a year, Workshop 24 was a place for South Kilburn people, open from November 2010 - March 2011. Run by the Empty Shops Network, and managed by artist and writer Dan Thompson, it was home to poetry and parkour, guerilla gardening and urban exploration, patchwork and photography – all powered by endless cups of tea. Some of the people that used the space are photographed and interviewed in this book, but it really is just some: a snapshot of about one hundred and twenty days at Workshop 24. A floating band of artists, creatives, writers, makers and thinkers made Workshop 24 their temporary home. Some were local, some passing through, some, inspired by Workshop 24 itself, had come to spend time in a bit of London they’d never seen. And they all made sure that Workshop 24 was a place to have a go at things you’d never tried, find out about things you never knew, explore corners of South Kilburn you’d never seen and make friends with people you’d never met. Workshop 24 uncovered lost rivers and abandoned allotments, unlocked creativity and culture and unwrapped South Kilburn’s stories and histories.

Over four months, the shop became part of the local landscape, and part of the rhythm of life in Peel Precinct. A quiet morning, the bustle of hometime, calm in early evening; Workshop 24 was there for people to stop, meet, catch up.

Workshop 24 may have gone, but fired by fifty languages, a dozen different cultures, seven thousand people and a hundred histories, what’s Made In South Kilburn remains.

Introduction to Made in South Kilburn

Too often the arts are regarded as elitist and unimportant; a luxury that is the first to be cut when funding gets tight. And yet, since the beginning of history, humans have looked to the arts – music, poetry, performance, visual arts – to express our dreams and our fears, and, crucially, to communicate and connect with each other.

South Kilburn Neighbourhood Trust and the London Borough of Brent established the South Kilburn public art programme because they recognised the potential for art and creativity to play a vital role in the regeneration of South Kilburn. The programme has been designed with a belief in the power of art to inspire and connect, and an understanding that regeneration needs to build the skills, confidence and aspirations of local people as well as improve the physical environment. Each project has aimed to work with, and listen to, people who live and work in the area. It has been a real pleasure to watch stories unfold, friendships form, and new work come to fruition.

Made in South Kilburn was developed through our ‘empty shop’ project; Workshop 24 has been a focus for the wealth of activity happening across the programme, offering a new, neutral space for people to come together to explore and be inspired by South Kilburn and each other.

I would like to extend a huge thank you to all the artists who have worked on the programme, to the hundreds of local people who have got involved, and to South Kilburn Neighbourhood Trust and the London Borough of Brent for their ongoing commitment to embedding arts and creativity into the ongoing regeneration of South Kilburn.

Best thing in my opinion is that the area can seem empty at times and quiet, and it’s lovely walking through because you can take in everything around uninterrupted. It gives me a sense of freedom and ownership and belonging.The worst is the blocks, the people deserve better. I’ve lived in them for nearly 7 years and you can feel trapped sometimes living in them.

Enthusiastic, happy and messy.


People and human nature. Having the opportunity to work closely with people that I would not ordinarily have had the chance to and making new relationships and friendships. Hearing about their experiences, memories and perspectives on the world that we share feeds my own being as well as practice.


The real mix of cultures in South Kilburn has to be one of my favorite things. WHAT PUTS A SMILE ON YOUR FACE?

Small things like, overhearing or over seeing something I would ordinarily not. Like two old friends making a joke or listening to my ipod and noticing traffic move in sync with the music.

Nope. I grew up in the West Midlands, in a city called Wolverhampton. I’ve lived in S.K for just over 5 years now.


The diversity, there is always an interesting story to be heard from someone.


My nickname! “STRAWBERRY HEAD”, as I have quite a prominant chin and used to have spikey hair. It’s very fitting, I don’t find it iritating one bit- a sign of affection- lol!

A shout out to beautiful Fiancee, Linda Li- for really growing and blossoming in our long distance relationship, and for her commitment regardless of all the situations and complexitys we face. It has been such a rewarding journey so far... and still is!


I can’t think of anything straight off, but I know I’d say to those in relationships as advice “Grow the friendship first before jumping to fast in a relationship, and be honest with your partner out of respect for them- even if it causes some pain. Those who love you through thick and thin- wow- you have something special.

At the OK Club we are fortunate to have a constant stream of residents at our hostel who come to volunteer with us for at least 2 sessions a week. The come from all over the world - Christians from for example Cameroon, China, Columbia, Gambia, Germany, Ghana, Korea, New Zealand, Romania, Tanzania, Uganda and the USA as well as the UK - including students from Oxford University like those who founded the Club 50 years ago. Whether staying for 3 months or 5 years or more the resident volunteers each live and work as full participants in the local community. It is clear from subsequent emails their experiences show they can genuinely be said to be ‘Made in SK’.

This is even more true of those who work full time for the Club like myself. It is a privilege to be able to offer great facilities to the young people of SK and meet their needs by drawing them together into a Club, and to provide a venue for others doing similar things - such as Talented Artists, Positive Slogans, Oasis Parents & Toddlers, Somali Affairs Group, Evolution Football, Kilburn Tae Kwon Do, Laway Filipino Dance, Alpha Learning, Wado Ryu Karate, Seeds of Hope and churches such as True Vine and Lighthouse Chapel. We have a wide variety of activities

for different groups of children and young people every day even when finance is scarce. We offer one to one advice, and work alongside parents including some who are former Club members. Sometimes we have reunions for members from previous decades.

So we are very busy ‘living life to the full’ as it says in our strapline - by which we mean that we try to get the best from all that life has to offer - now and always - and we are conscious of its potentially eternal significance and that every moment - and person - is infinitely precious and worth our time, respect and love. The Management of the OK Club, including some former Oxford students who have been resident volunteers at Club down the years, are motivated by their faith that God loves us all, and is willing to experience alongside us the worst of what we have to go through ourselves - as He demonstrated when Jesus was humiliated, tortured and crucified through his Love for us - including all of us who have been ‘Made in SK’ - and that now we can all share in his victory over the forces of death and destruction. sorrowful, solitary magpies.

These strange birds she never saw back in Somalia

though the cafés smell like home. Eritrean

excellence. She dreams in the language of tigers.

One night in Bangkok, a longing for Moroccan

mystery, the patient Persian whispering of

hopeful children mixing Urdu, Tigrinya, Arabic,

Portuguese, Farsi, Punjabi. Their rich green

vowels tiny seeds planted in nostalgic cement

that spells out the low humming traffic song of

a better future.

Dear customer, the first sauce is free, after that it’s 15p.

I read the sign and tell him being Irish I like my tea strong. He informs me not as strong as the Turkish where they put the kettle on top of the heater for at least ten minutes. Tea that is good and strong and black and if you ask for milk they look at you like you’ve something missing in your head.

The man in the rasta hat instructs, ‘Don’t burn my onions, I like them golden, not black.’ Then asks, ‘what was the God of the Ottomans called?’ The man behind the counter stirs the onions with a calm understanding of history. ‘God is the same, Allah. There was the crusades, you know before the First World War, the British came to Istanbul. We stopped them but then they got tricky and go inside. Still same God, same God as you.’ He scoops and swirlshis spatula with spiritual sophistication as the pan sizzles.

The older lady with the crutch says, ‘long as it taste good, no worry about cholesterol.’ He advises her to watch out for sugar, stick to Caribbean goodness. She replies,‘my mother was in a diabetic coma, I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy.’ He sighs, ‘my Mum went at fifty two. She say she ready to go now, she live long enough. Suppose the good Lord probably come take us soon.’

The man with Africa printed on his jeans tells how his neighbour, just on the corner there, won two thousand pound on the machinesbut then she tried to double it and lost the lot. His friend nods wisely, ‘You need to know when to enjoy yourself, get out there with what you got. Not be looking for more.’

For the price of a cup of tea, I have learned of history, philosophy, religion, good health and tragedy. The man says thank you, his onions are perfect, just how he likes them, and isn’t it great how the sauce is free.

My grandparents, who belonged to a generation for which family, community and austerity weren’t something clever to be achieved, but were what you did. Incidentally, my nan, still alive and high-kicking, was a dancing girl who learnt under Phyllis Bedells in Quex Road, Kilburn.


‘Don’t talk about it man, all you gotta do is do it’ - not given to me directy, but from a Pink Fairies song. Encapsulates all the best advice I’ve ever been given though.

Anything and everything: people, plants, music, food: the ideas never stop coming.


The way people make an effort to look you in the eye and say hello. The life stories and kindness that I’ve encountered whilst working here.


My kids, a nice cup of tea and conversation, horticulture, film, music, sunshine, silliness and the Mighty Boosh.


My best friend and my brother (for fighting for their lives for as long as they could).

The Architecture Foundation, South Kilburn Neighbourhood Trust, Brent Council and Practice Architecture worked together to transform a disused space on Canterbury Road near the Peel Precinct into a series of studio spaces.

There was an open call for tenants from the creative industries who all pledged to pass on their trade to a local young person in return for free rent over a six month period.

The traineeships run from May - September 2011 allowing those involved to build up a strong portfolio of work and broaden their skill set in order to help them in the search for future employment.

South Kilburn Studios will also run a whole host of public events, from workshops, exhibitions and open studios.
