FUNDAMENTAL K-8

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Hello again Madeira Beach Fundamental students and families,

We celebrate our teachers the week of May 4, 2015. Exceptional schools are made up of ex-

ceptional people that dedicate their lives to educating our kids. Without a doubt in my mind

our students love this school. It’s the energy, passion, and enthusiasm that our teachers give

them every day.

Once upon a time a student was carving into a freshly painted bookshelf with a paperclip ra-

ther than reading a book assigned by the classroom teacher. This student was called to speak

with the teacher and needless to say, the teacher was disappointed in the behavior of this

student. When asked about this behavior, the student had no excuse and apologized profuse-

ly. Before the teacher issued a consequence for vandalism, the teacher inspected the damage

of the shelf and noticed the words carved in it. I love school. That’s right…I love school. While

the actions of that student were inappropriate, it was those words that changed that teacher

forever. We all have those stories. We remember moments in time. Who was that teacher? I

was that fifth grade teacher at Lealman Avenue Elementary School. Isn’t that what school is

supposed to be about?

All teachers have stories like this one. School is a building for kids. School was our very first

job. Students receive no financial reward for success every other week, like a pay check, but

today’s students will be financially rewarded when they enter the work force. A teacher’s in-

fluence on a child is life-long. You can never tell where it will end. It is the teacher, that makes

magic happen. The classroom is the stage. To them teachers are the world’s greatest speaker,

mathematician, or scientist, the best musician or renowned artist, and the students; they are

the audience sitting on the edge of the seat. The teacher is one who makes two ideas grow,

when there was just one.

MEDIA CENTER NEWS

Elementary Battle of the Books 2014-15 We are pleased to report that 9 teams from grades 3-5 participated in this year’s Battle of the Books competition. Our three Madeira Beach Fundamental Elementary grade level battles took place on Monday, February 2nd. The following teams advanced from our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade battles to the final battle on Tuesday, February 3rd: Lopez & Tucker’s King of the Books, Stang’s Harry Potter Fan Club, Thompson’s Three Muskateers + 1, and Blixt & Coles’ Under-dogs.

Congratulations to Stang’s Harry Potter Fan Club who had a first place finish in the final battle. The battle was extremely competitive with Thompson’s Three Muskateers + 1 in a very close second place finish. The Harry Potter Fan Club fourth graders Ryan B. (team captain), Wade G. (Alternate), Daniel G., and Lily T. will go on to battle other Pinellas County School teams in the Regional Battle of the Books competition on Tuesday, May 12th at the PCSB Administration Building in Largo. The five advancing teams from the morning Regional Battles will compete in the Final District Battle of the Books which will be held the same day from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m.

We would like to express a special thank you to all the teachers, parents, and volunteers who supported our Battle of the Books program this year!

Good luck to The Harry Potter Fan Club in the Regionals!!!

2nd Annual Book Swap

Summer is right around the corner, which means it’s time to start thinking about which books you would like to bring in for the 2nd Annual Book Swap. The Book Swap will be held the last week in May (TBD). We will begin excepting books at all reading levels from students on Mon-day, May 11th. Donated books can be fiction or nonfiction.

The process will be the same as last year: 1. students bring in gently used books for donation May 11th – May 22nd, 2. students receive a ticket for each book they donate, 3. students redeem their tickets during the swap the last week of May for the same number of books they donated. Also, the Media Center would appreciate the donation of any gently used books that families would like to simply donate. Please drop off your donations in either Front Office with a label indicating they are for Mrs. Foushee or in the Media Center. Middle school level books would be especially appreciated as we have many 4th and 5th grade students read-ing at that level.

This event is a great way for students to get new or used books for summer reading. More

information regarding the 2nd Annual Book Swap will be coming home in your student’s back-

pack soon.

SCHOOL HEALTH NEWS

ATTENTION PARENTS OF INCOMING 7TH GRADE STUDENTS 2015-2016

Florida State Law states that students will not be permitted to attend class on the first day of seventh grade without proof of the required immunizations. Students will need to have received one Tdap booster and two chickenpox vaccines. Pinellas County Schools are required to enforce these immuniza-tion requirements and strongly encourage you to get this completed as soon as possible. After your child has received these vaccines, please turn in a completed certifi-cate of immunization to the school. You can contact your child’s healthcare provider to request these vaccines. If your child does not have a healthcare provider, immunizations are available at no cost at your local Department of Health location, no appointment is need-ed. If you have any questions about these vaccine requirements, you are welcome to call the School Health Services department at 588-6320 for assistance. We hope that all sixth grade students are prepared for seventh grade! Thank you for your attention to this matter. ATTENTION PARENTS OF STUDENTS WHO KEEP MEDICATION AT SCHOOL Pinellas County Schools Medication Policy does not allow student’s medication to be kept on premises during the summer. Please make arrangements to pick up your child’s medication from the clinic by the last day of this school year. Any medication not picked up by June 2nd will be discarded. Keep in mind that we cannot give leftover medication to your child to take home. It must be picked up by an adult. The school requires an adult signature when medication is picked up.

NEWS UPDATES *Take the Exceptional Student Education annual parent survey. The annual Exceptional Stu-dent Education parent survey conducted by the Florida Department of Education is underway through Sunday, May 31. The survey gives parents of students receiving special education services the opportunity to provide feedback on their school involvement and provide com-ments on their child’s school. This type of parent input is critical in determining if the district will meet the requirements for the state’s Annual Performance Report. The parent survey is available online at www.esesurvey.com or www.pcsb.org/ese. To request a hard copy of the survey, contact Marty Massimo, FDLRS Parent Service Specialist at [email protected] or 793-2723 x2043. * Could your child benefit from extra learning opportunities over the summer? Registration for Summer Bridge is underway. Summer Bridge is especially important for stu-dents who are not performing on grade level or need additional help to stay on track. Sum-mer Bridge provides engaging activities and intensive instruction to prepare students for max-imum success. Most Summer Bridge programs will run Monday through Thursday from June 16 to July 23. Parents can register athttps://reservation.pcsb.org. Schools will also assist fami-lies with the registration process. Find the latest information at www.pcsb.org/summerbridge. MORE KUDOS On February 19th the author, Henry Cole, came to our school. Jacob had the book he wrote and illustrated called, A Nest for Celeste, signed by him. Jacob was so excited to meet him. When he got home he called his grandmother to tell her all about his visit. She was so hap-py to hear about it and how excited Jacob was. She wrote an e-mail to Henry Cole thanking him for going to Madeira Beach Fundamental and for inspiring her grandson. A day or two later she got an e-mail back from him. Mr. Cole's asked for Jacob's teacher's name. He said he would be sending something to the school for him. On Tuesday, April 7th, a package ar-rived at the school for Jacob and in it was a drawing from the Nest for Celeste book attached with a note that says for Jacob M. from Henry Cole. Jacob feels very honored that Henry Cole sent him this picture and is very thankful to his grandmother for writing him. Ever since Henry Cole's visit Jacob has gotten a sketch book and has been drawing daily.
