A New Year thought from President Ian

“May Light always surround you; Hope kindle and rebound you.

May your Hurts turn to Healing; Your Heart embrace Feeling.

May Wounds become Wisdom; Every Kindness a Prism.

May Laughter infect you; Your Passion resurrect you.

May Goodness inspire your Deepest Desires.

Wishing a Happy New Year to you all!

Free tap water scheme launches inMadeley to help cut plastic wasteRefill Madeley is on a mission to make refilling your water bottle as easy, convenient and cheap as possible, by introducing Refill Stations on every street. This exciting scheme encourages participating cafés, bars, restaurants, banks and other businesses to sign up to the free Refill app and put a sticker in their window alerting passers-by to the fact they’re welcome to fill up their bottle for free.

It’s estimated that around 7.7 billion plastic water bottles are bought across the UK each year, resulting in substantial amounts of single-use plastic waste ending up in our oceans.

City to Sea, a not-for-profit organisation headed by campaigner Natalie Fee, launched the award-winning Refill Campaign in 2015. It’s estimated that the scheme, now being rolled out nationwide with support from Water UK and local water companies, will cut plastic bottle use by tens of millions each year, as well as substantially increasing the availability of high-quality drinking water.

Local Champion Cllr Helena Morgan from Madeley Town Council, who are launching Refill Madeley, explains why both businesses and their customers should get involved:

“Here in Madeley we’re rightly proud of the area’s history and to be part of a world heritage site. Plastics, including single-use plastic bottles, are now the most frequently found type of litter on UK beaches and you don’t have to look far to find them littering our towns and green spaces too.”

Helena added, “Refill Madeley gives us all the opportunity to help make this type of litter a thing of the past at the same time as saving money. It’s good business sense as well, as customers view businesses that provide free water refills more favourably and are more likely to return to them to make future purchases.”

Find out more about Refill Madeley and how you can take part at www.facebook.com/RefillMadeley/ or twitter.com/RefillMadeley.Visit the Refill website at www.refill.org.uk to download the free Refill app and find out more about the Refill movement.

Grants forChristmas ActivitiesYes . . . It’s time to think about

those Christmas parties! Each year Madeley Town Council sets aside £4,000 to provide funding for Christmas celebrations for pensioners living within the Parish (Madeley, Woodside, Hills Lane and Sutton Hill).

Groups and organisations which provide activities for pensioners throughout the year, such as social groups, luncheon clubs etc. are invited to apply for financial support for any planned Christmas events. This could be a Christmas lunch, a trip out to the theatre or place of interest or an evening party. Whatever the group feels its members would most enjoy.

All groups that received a grant last year will be invited to apply again for Christmas 2019. We would, however, like to see some new groups applying.

If you are involved in running an eligible group that does not already receive a grant for Christmas activities, please contact Madeley Town Council on 567280 or call in to Jubilee House to request an application form.

Photo: Presentation made to Janet (seat-ed) by our chair Mr Martin Shaw and Secretary Mrs Pat Clarke

A presentation was given to Mrs Janet Ford after serving 29 years as a volunteer for MWS Credit Union.

Mrs Ford was part of the team that set up the Credit Union in 1990 and has worked consistently in making sure that the Credit Union has run efficiently since then. For over 20 years Janet has held the responsible role as treasurer of the Credit Union.

The Credit Union was established in September 1990 to alleviate the progression of loan sharks in the area and to encourage members to save and borrow low interest loans. Janet was and is a strong believer in providing this service to her local community.

We are very sorry to lose her but would like to wish her a happy retirement and thank her for all the commitment, time and effort that she has given us over the years.

News from Madeley OrchardIt has been a wonderful season at the orchard this year. The bee borders were full of bees and the small buddlia has been covered in butterflies especially the commas and peacocks – just beautiful.

If you visit at this time you will see that the beautiful blossom is now turning into fruit. The apple trees are laden and will soon be ripening. The plums and damsons might take a little longer. We did have loads of cherries but they disappeared in just one week. The birds must have had a feast! At the moment we have a group of 15-17 year olds doing various jobs in the orchard for the National Citizens Service and they will be with us until the end of August. A big THANK YOU to them for all their help. If you see them, let them know how much the community appreciates their work.

It has been great to see so many people using the orchard and we’d like to say thank you everyone for helping to keep the place tidy.

Blue Notices! You may have seen one or two blue public notices around the centre of Madeley and also at Madeley Park. If you have, don’t be alarmed. They are just notifications that Madeley Town Council has applied to Telford & Wrekin Council for relevant licences to ensure that our community events continue to take place with ease in the areas that we have used in previous years.

Currently, we organise the Madeley Charity Market and the Christmas Lights Switch-on event in Madeley Centre and also the very well attended Madeley Green Day at Madeley Park (Legges Way).

The annual licence means that we will continue with these events without having to make separate applications each time we want to organise something for the community.

FeedtheBirdsTelfordA Partnership project between Telford & Wrekin Council and Shropshire Wildlife Trust

A growing number of people are housebound, isolated and lonely or at risk of becoming so. Bird feeding can provide great pleasure to those who are housebound and a weekly visit by a bird feeding friend can offer valuable regular social contact.

Volunteers will visit clients in their home, once/twice a week for up to an hour, to help feed the birds. This will include, putting up bird feeders, cleaning them, replacing seed and chatting about the birds that have been using the feeders.

All bird feeding equipment will be provided, including feed and a simple guide to recognising the birds that are visiting the garden.

While the Anstice is closed for renovation, work is in full swing to prepare for reopening and the Anstice Community Trust (ACT) is delighted to welcome new recruits Julia Fellows and Laura Simcox. Julia and Laura have joined Gemma Aston, Anstice Centre Director who was appointed in April. Both new posts are funded for five years by the National Lottery Community Fund.

Julia, as Anstice Volunteer Manager, has a working background of 30 years and brings extensive skills and knowledge to the Anstice, including hospitality, people management, recruitment and finance.

She has always lived in Telford and has strong ties to Madeley. Her children are at school here, as she was, and she knows the Anstice well, playing in the Abraham Darby School band there on more than one occasion!

Over the past 20 years Julia has volunteered and organised many fundraising events; in particular for Meningitis Now. Julia is very excited to be joining the team at the Anstice – ‘I am looking forward to working with the volunteers who have already done such an amazing job of fundraising for the restoration.’

The volunteers are now working on an Anstice poppy wall ready for Armistice Day, displaying thousands of poppies knitted or crocheted by local people. The volunteers will be familiar faces around Telford at various events to raise funds for the Anstice, collect poppies and let people know what’s happening with the building, so please support them.

The Anstice is due to reopen later this year and Julia is recruiting volunteers to assist with the new café, administration, PR and marketing research and with the upcoming youth club. If you would like to help, please contact her via email [email protected] or phone (07483 405894).

Laura previously worked as Events Manager for the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust, where she organised popular events such as the Steampunk Festival and bringing the colossal Man Engine to Ironbridge.

Her new role as Anstice Business/Community Link Manager means that she will be fundraising for the Anstice by building relationships with local businesses and community groups. Her days will involve networking, bid writing, programming, marketing, and much, much more.

If you are a local business and keen to get involved with the Anstice, whether for volunteering opportunities, sponsorship, or offer support in any way, please get in touch with Laura via email [email protected].

Julia and Laura joined the team just in time to help with organising a Teddy Bears’ Picnic on Madeley Green to say thanks to local residents, volunteers and businesses who have supported the Anstice. Despite the weather and with support from Madeley Town Council, the event was a success, with smiles and laughter overcoming the drizzle!

The Vietnam war had ended. The first ever Concorde test flight was conducted in France; 350,000 music fans attended Woodstock and the first man landed on the moon...… and in Madeley, some of the first projects by the Development Corporation were being opened.

On the 9th September, Key supermarkets MD Mr Peter Firmston-Williams officially opened their new store in Madeley centre. The new manager was Keith Wetherill.

On the 17th September, the Right Honourable Denis HowellM.P. officially opened the first phase of Madeley shopping precinct and library (phase 1 included 7 shops, 1 supermarket, 2 banks, library and 2,920 sq.ft. of offices). The overall cost of phase 1 was £265,000.

The new Library above the Co-op, was designed by Ceri Griffiths at a cost of £51,000 (the head librarian was Jo Kennedy).

Two new schools were also opened.

On the 18th October, the Sutton Hill junior & Infant schools were officially opened. It was named in memory of Sir Alexander Fleming, (the famous bacteriologist) with Sara Fleming & family (daughter of Alexander Fleming) attending. A sculpture designed by Mr L. Matthews was erected by the Infants school. The new Head was Dennis Edwards.

On the 3rd November, St Mary’s Catholic school was also officially opened by Father Jack Lynch.

The school cost £94,000 to build.

The downstairs of the Anstice is now taking shape with the most of the demolition work being completed. New steelwork has been installed and some old ceilings boarded up. Some of the old floors in the cellar were uneven and have had to be levelled to provide safe access. Exposed arches have been kept and incorporated into the library area. Currently, all the old services are being replaced, including a new electricity supply to serve the two retail units.

The new rear extension is nearly up to roof level. Once the roof is constructed, the curtain walling and lift will be brought on site to be installed.

A local company RS Salop have been appointed to restore the front windows. The downstairs windows are being repaired and repainted. The upper windows are in poor condition and need to be replaced. This involves a design that is more in keeping with the building, including reopening the top arches. Scaffolding will need to be erected at the front of the building to provide access to the upper windows.

The ballroom is being repainted and a new bar is going to be installed.

Work is well underway with the flat, with installation of new services and decoration.

We will try to keep any disturbance to a minimum. However, if there is a problem, please contact Pave Aways site manager; Tony Martin on 07738800344 or you can email [email protected]

Telford Mind getsAwareness HelpStudents from the University of Birmingham have been taking part in The Capgemini Community Challenge. Recently, they have been working with the local charity Telford Mind in an attempt to increase fundraising and raise awareness for their cause.

Who we are?We are a group of five students from the University of Birmingham currently enrolled on the Capgemini Community Challenge. The challenge consists of us working closely with a local charity for one week as we try to find business solutions that will benefit them going into the future.

Telford Mind:Telford Mind is an independent voluntary organisation that is affiliated to National Mind. It exists to promote and support better mental health in Telford and Wrekin.

What we are doing? The two main ways we are working to benefit Telford Mind is through fundraising and also through the marketing of their ‘Work it out’ service that is aimed at organisations in the Telford area. ‘Work it out’ provides customised mental health support for employers and employees within Telford and Wrekin. With this we are trying to put together a marketing plan that Telford Mind can then use to pitch to the local businesses and hopefully find some new customers. All our ideas will be put forward to the charity and various Capgemini staff and stakeholders.

How you can help?By directing readers to the various Telford Mind social media platforms and also their Just Giving page (https://www.justgiving.com/telfordmind) will hopefully raise awareness and fundraising. Also raising awareness for the need for mental health services in the workplace and the service that Telford Mind offer with ‘Work it out’ will also be a huge help.

BuzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzChildren at Halesfield Day Nursery had great fun learningabout bees with Alison Wakeman from Alison’s Bee Class.

The children learnt all about Britain’s native honey bees includinghow to identify and care for them. After trying on the bee keepercostumes the children were delighted to taste some of Alison’s honeyand look at various hives that had been brought along.

Helen Child’s nursery manager said “This was a great learning opportunity for thechildren and staff at the nursery and provided us with a great learning provocation to start our topic on mini beasts. Alison was great with the children bringing along lots of props for the children to handle. They were fascinated to learn about the honey making process and some of the products that can be made with bee’s wax. Since her visit we have extended the children’s learning further to talk about insect life-cycles and have even grownour own butterflies from caterpillars”.

‘WOODS FOR WELLBEING’ WALK... Come and find out more about the potential to get involved in some ‘Social Forestry’ projects locally on a 2.5-mile walk passing through no less than three local nature reserve sites on Wednesday 11th September. The walk is being led by the ‘Telford Woods’ Social Enterprise as part of the Borough-wide programme for the ‘Wellington Walking Festival’, organised by the Wellington ‘Walkers are Welcome’ group. The event will also launch the weekly ‘Telford Woods’ conservation work sessions, which will involve supervised work parties undertaking practical work across woodland sites in the Parish over the next 6 months. Meet at 2:30pm by the Ski Slope on Court Street.

Town Council first to sign-up to better woodlands!

One of the many projects being supported by the Borough Council’s ‘Telford@50’ Legacy Funding is the establishment of the new ‘Telford Woods’ Social Enterprise, drawing on the expertise of Coalbrookdale-based national woodland charity, Small Woods. The new Social Enterprise is seeking to create long-term opportunities for community involvement in caring for our many, increasingly important, yet often neglected, local woodland areas.

Initial ‘Social Forestry’ activities were piloted in the Madeley Parish as this is an area with both a high social need and many areas of woodland without a specific community group to oversee their care. The project worked to engage withindividuals whose wellbeing could particularly benefit from getting outdoors and undertaking practical conservation work as a group by working with the Court Street Community, Telford Mind, Hub-on-the-Hill and locally-based Corporate Volunteering Teams such as Co-Operative Funeral Care and Jaguar Land Rover.

Practical tasks including litter picks, footpath maintenance, fencing and scrub clearance were undertaken in the Madeley Court and Blists Hill Pit Mounds as well as Rough Park and Sutton Hill Village Green; working to support their existing ‘friends of’ groups respectively.

Madeley Town Council recently agreed to the new Social Enterprise’s first ‘Service Level Agreement’ through which it will provide additional funding to formally support the continuation of this work over the next season through weekly sessions in the Parish. The Social Enterprise hopes to build upon the local partners being worked with during this time to include organisations based at the Park Lane Centre and additional ‘corporate’ partners, as well as local school & youth groups.

Sutton Hill Village GreenWoodland Walk Improvements

During the spring some woodland walks that form part of the Sutton Hill Village Green received some much-needed attention. A small woodland section of the village green has some informal walk ways running through it which have become rather over grown with vegetation that has crept over the edging and taken hold of the barked walk ways.

However, Community Payback were on hand to provide the man-power which included the weeding of the paths and then the distribution of wood chippings. This will help to mulch the paths to prevent further weed growth but also keep the paths from becoming muddy as the wood chip will soak up the moisture making it more accessible through the seasons.

Village Green getsEntrance MakeoverDuring the summer months a key entry point into Sutton HillVillage Green was given a much-needed makeover. Madeley Town Council, working alongside Smallwoods who attended withvolunteers, set about cutting back some unruly overhangingvegetation from the path edges whilst also cutting down sometall unsightly weeds from around the interpretation board anddirectional post.

A thick layer of wood chippings was then scattered around the base of the sign and post to help suppress any future weed growth as well as giving the entrance to the woodland a more welcoming feel.

Silkin Way Structures get a FaceliftRecently Madeley Town Council commissioned some much-needed improvement works along one of our main walking/cycling routes. A section of the Silkin Way that runs from Legges Way and onto Coalport has two historical structures such as a tunnel and the other being the former Hay incline plane (pictured above). These in recent years have become covered in ivy which, if left unmanaged, canbecome somewhat troublesome as they often damage the brickwork and its mortar.

Madeley Town Council, working in partnership with the Borough Council, commissioned the removal of the unwanted ivy growth from the facing brickwork and the adjacent wing walls, in some areas tree saplings had also taken hold withinthe brickwork, which could also be problematic in the future, so these werecoppiced and treated to prevent re-growth.

The work, now completed, has breathed new life into the two structures therefore giving an overall improvement both aesthetically when passing by whilst also safe guarding the brickwork which can now have the mortar repaired in places where needed. After

Lions 40Years OnIn 1979, 200 years after the Ironbridge was built a groupof like minded individuals got together and formed “Ironbridge & Severn Gorge Lions Club”

During August of that year the group from the club in the photograph first stretched a line of parcel tape across the Ironbridge and invited passers-by to put down their spare coins on the tape. We have no record of the amount raised by this first “Silver over the Bridge” event but over the past 40 years Ironbridge Lions have repeated the invitation over 300 times and raised more than £50,000 for many charities and good causes.

Gordon Weston, one of the group, is still an active member of the clubalthough, sadly, his mutton chop whiskers have long since disappeared. Othershave left us and although we can identify several of those shown we can no longer put a name to everyone in the picture. So if anyone can put names to faces we would love to hear from you.

Our 40th anniversary Bridge event on 4th August brought us an unexpected connection to that first collection in the form of Valerie Sedgley and her husband Michael. Having heard about the anniversary on Radio Shropshire they came down the Bridge to tell us that their son Philip was one of the first to benefit from these collections. Philip had a serious hearing problem and in 1979 the club had used Bridge donations to pay for a “phonic ear” which had made a significant difference to Philip’s ability to keep up at school. Valerie and Michael clearly remembered the support that they received with an affection that the Lions in our picture would surely have found gratifying.

40 years on from the that first Silver over the Bridge, the club is still playing a very active part in the community, still trying to make the kind of difference that our fellow-Lions made for the Sedgley family 40 years ago. Lions are men and women from all walks of life who volunteer their time and effort for the benefit of others. We work proactively to improve the quality of life and wellbeing across our community by enabling individuals or groups to respond to problems or achieve ambitions. If you are interested in helping us to do that, either as a member or a friend of the club, we would love to talk to you.

The Hub, Sutton HillThursdays, 1.30 to 2.15pmImprove your balanceFeel fitterStrengthen your musclesMake new friends

The Hubon the HillOver at the Hub we have had a busy summer this year. We had a number of days for the young people of Sutton H i l l , where they had the opportunity to play sport, bake and decorate cupcakes, and make new friends. Alongside these days we held a number of family’s days which included a trip to Blists Hill for a fun filled day in the museum.

We are now starting to plan for the autumn and then Christmas. We are planning to hold some more days for children and young people especially during the school holidays. Our current youth club is growing well and we are currently working towards opening the youth club for a second night specifically for young people from 13-16 years old.

I would like to welcome our new operations manager Steve Roe and our new centre co-ordinator Darren Dotson. They are responsible for the Hub on the Hill and the activities within it. If you have any questions or wish to know what is going on then please pop into the Hub and meet them.

As well as the activities within the hub we have been busy refurbishing our building at Severn Walk. This is now nearly completed, and the rooms will soon be available for hire, so if you are looking for a meeting room then please get in touch. We can also provide catering for your event so please ask any of the office staff for details.

Madeley Town council have always supported the Hub and we would like to take this opportunity to thank them for the kind donation that will enable us to install a De-fibrillator at the hub.

As always, we have a large number of activities every week at the hub so please pop in and have a look. When you pop in why not have a drink or light lunch from the hub café or pop into the shop on the hill.

All Change atthe Council...So long, farewell . . .At the May Council Elections we saw Cllrs; David Edwards, Rae Evans,Gill Green (pictured) and Stephen Harrington bowing out from duty.

We would like to thank them all for their contributions over the years.

We also say a fond farewell to Brenda Smith; Anstice Project Support Officer. Brenda recently retired after supporting the Anstice Community Trustees for the past three years. In that time she has worked tirelessly to support the Trustees and volunteers, planned and administered many successful events. She also obtained significant funding for the Trustees and Madeley Town Council for the building.

Brenda earned the respect of all those who have had the privilege to work with her. She will be very much missed, but we wish her a very happy and well deserved retirement.

We welcome our new councillors . . . Helena Morgan, Greg Spruce, Kelly Middleton, Nathan England & Dave Wright .
