design philosophyTo me, design is the ultimate marriage of the right and left brain. It combines the logical and analytical with the creative and beautiful. At its most basic, this is the balance between form and function. At a deeper level, it can be finding a cohesive harmony between architecture and interior, between nature and the built environment, between “stuff” and minimalism. Good design sees form versus function, great design sees the something more, the balance in all things, unity in all elements.

“Every valuable human being must aim to make thingsbetter than they are.”

Residential treatment facility. One of the goals of the project was to work within the existing art deco building, which was built initially as a Coca Cola bottling plant. Besides staying true to the aesthetics of the building’s history, a high level of privacy was desired, as well as an interior that would promote physical and mental wellbeing in the young women that would be treated there.

Left: Resident bedrooms with plywood wall/ceiling treatment and resident customization.

Right: Upstairs therapy/activity space. The custom origami crane chandelier hangs from the ceiling of the third floor, down the center of the spiral stairwell and all the way to the ground floor. Concept behind the crane installation was for residents to write a goal on a piece of paper, then fold it into a crane and add it to the installation when they are admitted.

Aging-in-Place Redesign

Residential redesign. The driving force behind the project was to adhere to aging-in-place principles, while maintaining the level of luxury and polish the clients were used to. We had the privilege of working with real homeowners on this project, as opposed to working in hypotheticals as is the case with most student projects.

Residential redesign, continued. We worked with an existing floorplan and made changes to the plan and site to make the home more accessible. Some of the changes included relocating the master bedroom to the existing downstairs poolhouse, and addressing level changes at all existing entrances into the home.

This project was retained for CIDA accreditation.

NUVERACorporate office project, based on the concept of a hydrogen atom for the hydrogen fuel cell company, Nuvera. Office encompassed 10,000 sq ft over two floors, and incorporated hotdesking and support for many modes of work.

Glass curtain walls throughout made the most of the views of the Baltimore skyline, with smart glass technology to allow for privacy and lowered ceiling for acoustical separation where necessary.

16

NUVERAThe custom central staircase and reception desk were a feature of the space, with the space planning of the rest of the office radiating out with respect to them. Open office furniture was primarily specified from Herman Miller, with lounge furniture mostly from Steelcase. The specified finishes were chosen to be modern and lustrous to play up contrast with the industrial concrete floors and exposed ceiling systems.

INSPIRATION IMAGERY

Glass walls are light permeable to allow daylight and views into even interior spaces, so that everyone in the offi ce may benefi t from these features.

Pre-design booklet for office project. Intent of the project is to be familiarized with open office systems, as well as an introduction to LEED certifications in conjunction with a Sustainability class. Work on the pre-design booklet took place over three weeks and culminated in development into the design phase.

The RetreatThis assisted living facility was developed based on the principles of The Green House model, which encourages senior resident independence and a residential feeling.Design scope covered all interior areas, including bedrooms, common areas, and utility areas. The design included a treatment for the outdoor spaces. Project includes use of Revit, hand rendering, and Photoshop.

This project was retained for CIDA accreditation.

Lake UnionThis loft for a family of four was located in Seattle, WA. The concept was based on the surrounding Seattle houseboat communities, and expressed through finishes and material choices. Design scope included everything contained by the four bounding walls, including FF&E selections and some systems work. This design was created in Revit, hand rendered, and then returned to Photoshop for finishing touches.

This project was retained for CIDA accreditation.

This Airstream trailer was designed for an author who was looking to travel the country for inspiration. Special attention had to be paid to proxemics and creating a functional space on a micro scale. The client desired a luxurious bathroom with a full-sized tub, as well as a full-sized washer and dryer. The design made the most of hidden storage and multifunctional design, like an expanding closet, pull-out cabinets, and a table that dropped down to allow the bed to fold out.

This project duplicated a magazine picture for a study in line weights. On the far left is the first version, done with just pen sketch. The middle drawing includes line weights with rendering of textures for beginning value. The far right is the final version, with line weight, value, and color.
