Experience
Nationwide Children’s HospitalResearch Assistant at the Center for Gene Therapy at NCHFor the past two summers, I was given the privilege to work in Dr. Kevin Flanigan’s lab doing research on the disease called Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy. Over the past two years I have learned how to time manage to the fullest extent along with multitasking with precision. Doing research that is vital to the progression of a cure for a muscular disease, you need to have a great deal of patience and awareness of all your surroundings. You cannot afford to mess up and when you do, you have take responsibility for your actions and retrace your steps in order to come up with a diagnosis of where things went wrong. Over the summer of 2015, I did a research intern poster on a project I had been working on. This taught me that you always need to work hard because you never know who will be watching, but not only for others views, for your own as well. You need to make yourself proud before you do other people and that is what I learned making and presenting that poster. Although I didn’t win anything, I
3
accomplished something not many high school students have the privilege of doing and because of which, I am extremely proud of myself. My hard work and determination paid off and it was recognized not by an award, but by myself and others at the presentation session.
