MASTER OF CEREMONIES

Tonight's Master of Ceremonies is Rev. Fred Webster, the founding pastor of Grace United Methodist Church. He has served throughout North Alabama for 22 years, along with his wife Rev. Dorothy Ann Webster. They have two boys, Tom and Matt. Fred did his undergraduate work at Birmingham-Southern College and his graduate work at Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.

The Bells of Christmas

Tonight’s program includes a compelling and powerful musical arrangement built around the poem “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day.” The following information provides context for this piece and may give you additional insight into the poem and the music.

One of America's best-known poets, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, composed the words to "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" on December 25th, 1864. When Longfellow penned the words to his poem, America was still months away from Lee's surrender to Grant in April, 1865. His poem reflected the despair of the war’s prior years, while ending with a confident hope of triumphant peace. Indeed, Longfellow wrote from his own experience of tragedy during the war; he lost his wife in July, 1861, and in late 1863 received word that his oldest son Charles, a lieutenant in the Army of the Potomac, had been severely wounded and left crippled. What you may not know is that the carol we sing today does not contain the same words that Longfellow originally wrote. The carol was originally a poem called “Christmas Bells,” that contained seven stanzas. In a later revision, the fourth and fifth stanzas of the original poem, which contained specific references to the American Civil War, were eliminated. In 1872, John Baptiste Calkin rearranged the poem, replacing the last stanza with the third, and set it to the familiar tune we sing today. Longfellow’s original poem is printed below.

‘Children’s Fun Bells’

This energetic ensemble consists of third and fourth graders from Asbury United Methodist Church, directed by Melissa Campbell and Karen Pudelski. They rehearse and perform regularly and take pride in sharing God’s love with the community. They are a special joy and inspire the child in all of us to cherish Christmas in its purest form. Although they usually perform as a singing group, they will entertain us tonight with “Fun Bells”. Covering a single octave in range, these uniformly sized bells are designed for playing chords as coordinated by color flashcards.

The Huntsville Community Children’s Chorus (HC3) was established in the fall of 1995 under the auspices of the Huntsville Community Chorus Association.  Open to all students in grades 4-9 with unchanged voices, the Chorus is dedicated to promoting choral singing among area youth through the study and performance of the finest music literature, including folk songs, carols, canons and works by major composers.

HC3 strives to provide a variety of performing experiences for the singers, as well as for the audience, such as fully staged productions of operettas Hansel and Gretel and H.M.S. Pinafore and a concert at the Alabama Music Educators Convention in Tuscaloosa.  HC3 singers also participate in the Young Voices Festival at Auburn University. In addition to the regular concert schedule, HC3 is available for community performances and events.  Requests for an HC3 performance may be made by calling Anne Chelekis at (256) 461-6057.

THE MADISON

COMMUNITY BAND

The Madison Community Band is a 501(c)(3) organization composed of musicians ranging in age from middle school to retirees. Members come from Madison and the surrounding communities. The band was incorporated in September 1993 and provides music for civic and cultural events. The mission of the Madison Community Band is to:

* Promote music and the arts throughout the Middle Tennessee Valley.

* Continue the heritage of the Community Concert Band in America.

* Encourage the youth in our community to become directly involved in musical performance and community service.

* Provide members with the opportunity for individual musical expression, enjoyment and growth.

In our short history, the band has been honored to perform 80 concerts at 26 different locations throughout North Alabama and South Central Tennessee! The list below is just a small reflection of the rich heritage of our mission statement in action.

* In December 1993, MCB established the annual Madison Community Christmas Concert. Since its beginning, the concert has provided more than 20 different performing groups and individuals the opportunity to share their talents with our community.

* MCB actively recruits students at all levels of education. We currently have students from three middle schools, two high schools, and two universities in the band!

* In 2000 and 2001, MCB sponsored Cornet Soloist Steve Charpie from California. Mr. Charpie spent a total of two weeks in North Alabama holding clinics in eight schools and a recital at UAH.

* In April, MCB sponsored the formation of a Tri-M Music Honor Society Chapter at Bob Jones High School. 61 students from the Band and Choral programs were inducted into this honor society at its first induction ceremony!

* In August, MCB established a Scholarship Program for high school students participating in the band. The scholarship program is open to all juniors and seniors meeting the eligibility criteria.

Guest Soloist - Dr. Carolyn Sanders

Dr. Carolyn Sanders is currently an Associate Professor of Music at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. She joined the faculty in 1990 upon completion of the Doctor of Music degree in Trumpet Performance from Florida State University. She received her Master of Music degree from the University of Southern California, Master's degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of Missouri, and her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of New Mexico.

Dr. Sanders is active as a recitalist and clinician throughout the South, as well as Europe, and is the former Principal Trumpet of the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra. Her current teaching duties include studio trumpet, music history, music theory, and conductor of the UAH Wind Ensemble. She is a 1998 recipient of the UAH Award for Distinguished Teaching, and holds memberships in Pi Kappa Lambda Honorary Society, College Music Society, International Trumpet Guild, and the Historic Brass Society. Dr. Sanders has studied with noted performers such as Boyde Hood and Rob Roy McGregor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Bryan Goff of Florida State University, Betty Scott of the University of Missouri, and Arnold Jacobs, retired tubist of the Chicago Symphony. She has also studied Baroque trumpet with Edward Tarr of Basil, Switzerland. As a result of her research on Baroque composers, Dr. Sanders has edited several compositions that have been published by Musica Rara of Monteux, France.

Madison Children's Theatre is a non-profit organization committed to presenting family oriented theatre productions to Madison and the surrounding communities. Madison Children's Theatre's goal is to actively involve all ages in the Theatre Arts experience.

Madison Children's Theatre's School of Cultural & Performing Arts is designed to provide an innovative and high quality performing arts education. The Cultural & Performing Arts School strives to create an environment where students are encouraged to express themselves to the best of their ability in a fun and enjoyable way.

The Littlest Angel

There was, in Paradise, a most unruly small girl known throughout Heaven as the Littlest Angel. She sang off-key and her halo was tarnished. Then she meets the Understanding Angel and explains how difficult it is for a girl who suddenly finds herself transformed into an angel and that she's unhappy because she longs for a box of toys that she left under her bed. A Heavenly Messenger brings the box and the Littlest Angel is overjoyed. But hers isn't the only joy in Heaven, for Jesus is to be born. The Littlest Angel has only one thing to give and she places her box among the other splendid presents. It shines out from the heavens, becoming what men will forever call the Shining Star of Bethlehem.
