CLOVER CONNECTION FEBRUARY 2015

Meet Your New CYC 4-H Open House Hello, 4-H’ers and 4-H families! I’m so excited to be back in Madison County to serve as your County Youth Coor-dinator! My name is Jennie Hargrove, and I am a Madison County 4-H Alumnus. I grew up in northeast Madison County, and I’m proud to be home. My first day in Madison County was January 12 after working over three years for Alabama 4-H. I really want to meet Madison County 4-H’ers, their families, and the Madison County Community. Therefore, you are invited to join us at the Madison County Extension Office on Tuesday, February 17th from 4-6 pm for an open house. There will be cookies and punch. It will be a time to socialize with your friends while giving me the opportunity to visit with each of you.

What: Madison County 4-H Open House Where: Madison County Extension Office

When: Tuesday, February 17 Time: 4-6 pm

Please consider attending! No RSVP necessary. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on the 17th. Until then, I look forward to serving you in a varie-ty of ways. If you need something, just ask. I look forward to learning from you. Sincerely,

Horse Project

Horse Educational Classes Offered What is Hippology? It is the study of the horse. Participants will learn about horse anatomy, health care, and nutri-tion to name a few topics. February dates are the 9th and 23rd.

Beginning in March we will be offering Competition Classes that meet every Monday night until the Horse Jamboree/Extravaganza in order to prepare for that contest. The Jamboree will be different this year as it will be held May 1, 2, & 3 in Iowa Falls, IA at the Ellsworth Equestrian Center and it will include horse judging with hippology & quiz bowl. Competition classes will alternate between horse judging and hippology/quiz bowl as follows: March 2-Judging, Mar 9-hippology, Mar 16 – Judging, Mar 23 – hippology/quiz bowl, Mar 30- judging, etc. ALL youth are welcome, but we will focus on contest preparation.

All of these classes take place at Foursquare Gospel Church in Winterset from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. If you have ques-tions, please call Jana Peters at 462-4177.

Prepare for the Fair! 2015 Requirements for the Madison County Horse Project Safety Clinic/Horsemanship workshop dates have been set. Please review the details on the website: www.madisoncountyhorseproject.com

Fruit Sales Fruit sales have begun! Horse Project youth should have received fruit sales information and forms via email or snail mail by now. The Fruit sale fundraiser is our biggest fundraiser so we encourage participation. Orders are due to Pat Riley by February 15 at [email protected]. Order forms may be picked up at the extension office or call Pat to get one. Fruit will be delivered Saturday, March 7 at 10:00 am at the Jackson Building. If you are unable to pick up your order that day, please make arrangements with Pat at 515-650-0066.

Veterinary Services Provided at Horsemanship Workshops Winterset Veterinary Center will be offering routine vaccinations/worming at the Horse Project Horsemanship Work-shops this spring. Vaccinating your horse protects them as well as other youth’s horses.

Give a gift of Camp Great for birthdays, holidays, prizes, or any special occasion . Gift certificates for any child (grades 1-8) can purchased in any denomination . Dates for camp will be June 17-20th. Stop by the Madison County Extension Office for more information.

YOUTH OPPORTUNITIES Food Safety & Quality Assurance (FSQA) Training All youth (4-H and FFA) planning to exhibit rabbit, poultry, beef, sheep, swine, dairy cattle and goats, and meat goats must be Food Safety Quality Assurance (FSQA) certified by June 1, 2015. This training includes youth planning to exhibit breeding and/or market animals!

The ONLY countywide FSQA training offered in Madison County will be Sat, Mar 7, 2015 at the New Bridge Church in Winterset (1304 W. Jefferson). Youth in grades 4-6 will attend training from 8-10 AM; youth in grades 7-12 will attend training from 10 AM-Noon.

Youth in grades 7-12 also have the option of becoming certified through testing. A testing session will also be held on Sat, Mar 7 from 8:30-10:00 AM at the First Baptist Church. (Just a little hint—the test is not as hard as you might think, so we encourage you to try the test rather than go through a two-hour training.) Testing may also be completed at the Extension Office before June 1—please call or email [email protected] to schedule.

Youth who have tested out in the past—if you passed the Intermediate exam for grades 7th-9th, you will need to recertify by taking the Advanced exam when you are in 10th grade. If you passed the Advanced exam (youth grades 10-12), your certification is current until Dec 31 of the year you turn 19. If you are un-sure of when your FSQA expires, check your 4Honline profile for the date. For more information, contact Jennie at the Extension Office.
