Madrid is the capital of Spain and is located almost dead centre in the Iberian penin-

The Spanish even have a nightlife verb: “madrugar” - to stay out partying all night

and get home at 7 or 8 next morning.

Madrid is certainly the place to immerse yourself in Spanish culture as there is plen-

ty of intellectual stimulation available at some of the best museums in Europe like

the Prado, Reina Sofia and Thyssen Bornemizsa. If you want to sharpen your Spanish

travel guide, but also take some time to see the old part of the city. Discover hidden

parks, small shops where artisans make and sell their wares, or colourful decora-

tions on walls in the old neighbourhoods of La Latina, Lavapies and Rastro. In these

areas you can see Madrid’s original architecture, have a drink and tapas in typical

bars, meet ordinary Madrileños, visit covered permanent markets selling mostly

fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, fish etc.

Probably the best attraction of La Latina is to just stroll around, letting the neigh-

bourhood soak in. Just walk through the narrow streets and alleys, go with the flow,

as if you were a boat on a river, always being pushed forward by the current. In

Lavapies you can have a kebab out on the street, listen to the drummers in the

square or simply have a cerveza in bars where the furniture seems to have been

collected from people’s living rooms.

Aside from the ethnic and original Madrid ambience that Rastro shares with

Lavapies and La Latina, Rastro is home to El Rastro, the biggest and most varied

open market in Madrid.

El Rastro is a famous flea market that opens on Saturdays and Sundays between

the Plaza de Cascorro, La Latina and the street of Embajadores. Everything imagi-

nable can be found here from valuable antiques to used clothing, including collector

cards, books, records, paintings, etc. The side streets also teem with bars and cafes

where you can take refuge after a hard day’s shopping.

And finally, a word about Madrid’s nightlife. If you are finished and ready to go

home at 4 am, you’ll probably be the first one to bed. According to the Madrid tour-

ist board, a good night out ends at around 7 am after visiting at least 5 different

night spots. Madrid has some of the best all-night entertainment in all Spain and

you’ll never be stuck for somewhere to go at just about any hour of the day. With all

this to offer, Madrid is a great place to have fun. History and character, artists and

theatre and a great nightlife. Madrid is the hub of Spain and the country’s business

centre so there’s never a shortage of teaching jobs.

EBC JOB SUPPORT TRAINING COURSE SCHEDULE

The course is full-time over 4 weeks. Course hours are: Monday, Tuesday and

Wednesday - 10 am to 5 pm with one hour for lunch, Thursday and Friday - 10 am to

1 pm followed by teaching your 1 hour class during the afternoon. Teaching practice

starts at 2 pm every Thursday and Friday. When you arrive, you will be given a de-

tailed course timetable and your teaching practice schedule.

The course starts at 9:30 am sharp. Please try to arrive at 9:15 am because you will

have to sign the register and hand in your signed course payment receipts.

European Union, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand pass-

port holders IGNORE THIS SECTION. You DO NOT need a tourist

visa to enter Spain.

If you DO NOT have a passport from a European Union country, the USA, Canada,

Australia or New Zealand then please make sure that you do the following:

Check with your country’s Spanish embassy or consulate to find out what your spe-

cific entry requirements are to cover the 28 day TESOL TEFL course period.

Before you send a deposit you must check with your nearest Spanish embassy or

consulate as to exactly what you need to do in order to apply for a tourist visa to

enter Spain.

To attend the course you must have a tourist visa that will allow you to stay in Spain

for 5 weeks. Make sure you have your visa BEFORE you send your deposit.

This information is subject to change at any time. To avoid disappointment, please

contact your local consulate for current travel regulations prior to planning your trip.

ONE YEAR STUDENT VISA IN SPAIN

If you have a European Union passport, IGNORE this section.

It is still possible to work in Spain without a work permit for 6 to 9 months. This

statement is based on our experience placing teachers in Spanish language schools

since 2002. However, some people feel more comfortable with a long-term visa so

we offer a one year student visa programme.

We offer two student visa programme paths:

1. TEFL course + an 80 hour intensive Cervantes Institute Spanish course

denied because the Spanish school and the program are rejected by the consulate.

The Cervantes Institute [CI] is the official organisation for Spanish language learning.

The owner of EBC’s partner CI accredited Spanish school is also the President of FED-

ELE. FEDELE is Spain’s overseeing organisation for all Spanish schools in Spain.

Fees for the two student visa programme paths

1. TEFL course €1,219 + 80 hour Spanish course €680 = total of €1,899

2. TEFL course €1,219 + 1 year Spanish course €980 = total of €2,199

NOTE: The TEFL course is discounted.

How to apply for a student visa

1. Apply for an EBC TEFL course in Madrid

2. Receive, fill out and return a personal details form so EBC can write your

study abroad documents

3. Contact your nearest Spanish consulate to get a list of required documents

and make an appointment to present your documents

4. Send your student visa processing fee: €680 if you want student visa pro-

gramme path one or €980 if you want student visa programme path two

5. Receive your study abroad documents from EBC

6. Get the other personal documents the consulate has requested

7. Attend the appointment at the consulate

8. Receive your student visa

9. Register your arrival when you come to Madrid

Allow three months to complete the process and make sure that the appointment

you make in Step 3 is at least three weeks before you fly to Madrid.

EBC JOB SUPPORT IMPORTANT 1: Two standard documents that are requested by the consulate are a

statement that you are in good health and a police report stating that you are not a

convicted criminal. The health report is quite easy to get but the police report takes

time. In some cases, between 4 to 6 weeks. You cannot attend the appointment you

arranged in step 2 until you have all your documents. Make sure the appointment

date you arrange is realistic. To speed up the personal document gathering process,

EBC recommends that you start ordering these documents as quickly as possible.

IMPORTANT 2: After you have attended the appointment at the consulate, Step 7,

you will have to wait until the student visa is finally approved. The consulate has to

send all your details to Spain for final immigration approval. This process can take

anywhere from one to three weeks.

Is the visa process guaranteed? Yes, we will refund your student visa fee if the

consulate denies your student visa application because the Spanish school and study

programme are not acceptable.

We have a 100% success rate in getting a student visa for Americans, Canadians,

Australians and New Zealanders so it is highly unlikely that you will be rejected.

It is important that you understand that you will get a student visa and not a work

visa. However, “Article 90 - Work for students or researchers”, means that you can

apply for permission to work up to 20 hours a week to cover living expenses.

When you attend the appointment at the consulate, make it clear that you are

coming to Spain to study abroad. Regardless of your intentions, do not mention

anything relating to work or they will deny your student visa application and EBC

will not refund your fee.

Mandatory

Your passport with at least 6 months left to run on it (with a visa if you need

one – refer to the visa section for more information).

A round-trip or onward travel ticket if you aren't already in Spain. If you arrive

only with a one-way ticket and passport control asks to see your return ticket,

they will force you to buy a return ticket on the spot. This will be very expen-

sive. The chances of this happening are unlikely but not impossible so play it

safe.

Your signed course payment receipts.

If you have a degree, a copy of your transcripts (official or unofficial) or a copy

of your degree certificate.

Recommended items for the TEFL course

Laptop computer - Check that it is wireless B/G compatible. We give you the

codes to connect to our free WIFI but you are responsible for configuring your

laptop and making sure it works properly and connects.

Mobile/Cell phone - If you have a tri-band phone - BRING IT. You will find that it

is cheaper to buy a pay-as-you-go card for your phone than it is to buy a new

phone. Being contactable by phone is VERY important. Good local phone com-

panies: Telefonica, Vodafone, Orange and YOIGO.

All foreigners can use Spanish national health, but we HIGHLY RECOMMEND

that you take out personal accident and health insurance.

Scissors, notebook, glue, pens and pencils, paper clips, blue-tac (don't forget

to put your scissors and other sharp objects in your check-in baggage)

English-Spanish phrase book and/or dictionary

Presentable clothes for teaching and job interviews. Business suits are re-

WHAT KIND OF CLOTHES SHOULD I BRING?

There are no specific dress rules when you attend class, but we ask that you respect

your peers and the fact that you are a visitor in another country.

There are specific dress requirements for teaching practice sessions that conform

with the local working and professional culture. You are expected to dress smart

casual as per the following guidelines.

Women

Shoulders should be covered (blouses with sleeves). No low-cut necklines or very

short skirts. Bare midriffs must not be visible, even when lifting arms up. Open-toed

shoes are acceptable, but no hiking boots, sneakers/trainers or beach sandals.

Men

Long pants/trousers. NO jeans. Short or long-sleeved shirts with a collar (a tie is not

required). Loafers or dress shoes are acceptable (no sandals, hiking boots or sneak-

ers/trainers). Long hair should be tied back.

Other wardrobe planning should be based on the seasonal temperatures mentioned

in the Local Weather Conditions section shown later in this document.

ARRIVING: AIRPORT TO DOWNTOWN TRANSPORTATION

Madrid’s international airport is called Barajas and is situated about 20 kilometres

from central Madrid. It is quite big and there are four terminals.

EBC JOB SUPPORT UNDERGROUND RAIL— ”EL METRO” - 15 MINUTES TO DOWNTOWN

The Barajas Airport Metro station is in Terminal 2. Trains leave about every 5

minutes from 6.00 am to 2.00 am Line 8 goes straight to the Nuevos Ministerios

Metro station (the nearest metro to EBC) in the centre of Madrid.

SHUTTLE BUS—45 TO 60 MINUTES TO DOWNTOWN

An airport bus runs between all the Barajas terminals and Plaza Colón in downtown

Madrid. There are several stops on the way to Plaza Colón. At Plaza Colón the under-

ground bus terminal connects with the Colón Metro station. Buses run daily in both

directions about every 10-20 minutes from 4.45 am to 1.30 am.

TAXI —30 TO 45 MINUTES TO DOWNTOWN

There are plenty of taxis outside the arrival area in the official taxi ranks. There is a

huge sign on the wall near each taxi rank that indicates how the taxis operate and

how much they cost. Official taxis are white with a red stripe on both sides. DO NOT

go with people who walk up to you and offer you a taxi, they are not licensed and

are not insured to take passengers.

LIMO —30 TO 45 MINUTES TO DOWNTOWN

This is an option but it is not worth considering because it is expensive. Bearing in

mind the low-cost and efficiency of public transport, a limo is not really a necessity.

WORKING IN SPAIN

WILL I REALLY GET A JOB TEACHING ENGLISH IN SPAIN?

The short answer is YES.

In Madrid it is easy if you have a recognised certificate like EBC’s.

Madrid has the greatest demand for native English teachers in the whole of

Spain.

Many language schools in Madrid don't care if a prospective teacher has a work

permit.

EBC is always being asked for teachers by language schools as early as the first

week of a new course.

EBC graduates are usually working shortly after finishing the course at full mar-

ket rates (15 to 20 Euros per hour).

Due to the political and social unrest in Cataluña, many companies are leaving

Barcelona and moving to Madrid. This is good for Madrid because the English

learning population will grow even more.

WHAT IS THE TEFL JOB MARKET IN MADRID LIKE?

The TEFL job market in Madrid is always good and hiring is year-round.

Don't delay looking for a job until you start running out of money. The best time to get a

job is when you finish the course. We send your CV/resume directly to the hiring man-

agers of 350+ schools in Madrid. Most schools in Madrid do not care whether you have

a work permit or not.

WHAT IS THE AVERAGE SALARY FOR AN ENGLISH TEACHER?

The average salary for a starting teacher in Madrid is between 15 and 20 Euros per

hour. This varies depending on what type of school or company you work for and

whether you work full-time or part-time. We do not recommend that you accept less

than the minimum unless the school is also throwing in some other incentives like free

Spanish lessons or other benefits of value.

HOW MANY EBC GRADUATES REALLY FIND WORK IN SPAIN?

The EBC course training centre in Madrid also runs a language school. Subject to availa-

bility, you may get offered an English teaching job by the language school at the end of

the course.

We have been running the course since 2002 and all of our course graduates who have

wanted to work in Spain have been able to secure teaching positions.

MORE ABOUT MADRID

Local transportation

Central Madrid is a great place to see on foot, but like all capital cities it is large, so if

you want to go further afield, use public transport.

Public transport in Madrid is safe and efficient, the “Metro” (Subway/Underground) is

the easiest to use. It has a big network to central and outlying Madrid. There is also an

extensive city run bus service and commuter rail service. There are also plenty of taxis

which. You can easily get to our TEFL course training centre by public transport. Once

you are settled in we recommend that you buy a 1 month “Metrobus” pass for central

Madrid (Zone “A”). This costs a little over €50 and gives you unlimited use of the Metro,

public bus system and the RENFE commuter rail service during the month.

Shopping

Madrid has probably the best shopping in all of Spain. There are many areas containing

malls and shopping areas full of different types of stores. Unless you are in a street mar-

ket, where you may be able to haggle prices, the cost of items in stores is as marked.

COMMON-SENSE WARNING: Shopping areas in tourist areas attract pick-pockets, so

watch your purse or wallet.

Mountain life

About an hour to the north of Madrid by train is the Guadarrama mountain range. The

highest peak is Peñalara that rises up to 2,430 metres (about 7,500 feet). You can go

hiking or climbing, visit the national parks, go horse-back riding or simply take in the

breath-taking views over the state of Madrid.

Skiing

The Guadarrama mountains are Madrid’s ski vacation home. There are two main ski

stations, Puerto de Navacerrada and Valdesqui in operation from December through to

March. Snow is generally good and ski stations have snow machines as well. If you are a

real die-hard you can ski all year long in Europe’s largest in-door slope located in the

Xanadu mall in Arroyomolinos, a suburb about 10 kms. south of Madrid.

Beaches and swimming

Madrid has lots of outdoor public pools that are open all summer and have very good

facilities. Entry for a full day is about €4. There is a man-made beach in central Madrid

on the banks of the Manzanares river. The nearest beaches by the sea are in Valencia,

but with the near health spa quality of the outdoor pools in Madrid – well it’s up to you!

Football/Soccer/Sports

Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid are both premiere league clubs in Spain. Real Madrid

is probably more famous and has its football stadium “the Bernabeu” located 5 minutes

walk away from the EBC training centre. Atletico are situated at the other end of town

next to the Manzanares river, about 30 minutes away from EBC. As a potential host of

the Olympics Madrid has plenty of top-class sports installations.

QUESTIONS ABOUT LIVING IN MADRID

What are the average housing and living expenses when working in Spain?

Most likely you will rent a room in an apartment or house with other teachers or with

Spaniards. Prices depend on where you choose to live. A room in a shared house or

apartment in a good neighbourhood is about 300 to 450 Euros a month.

TEFL teachers are quite well-paid by local standards, which means they can afford a

comfortable standard of living. A TEFL teacher can expect to earn between 1,200 and

1,700 Euros per month working 20 to 30 hours per week. While this may not sound a lot

by international standards, it means you can live quite comfortably in Madrid.

How much money should I bring?

If you do not arrange your accommodation through EBC, you should budget to spend

between €700 (Spartan life) to €1,000 (comfy life) for the period covering the 28 day

course. If you want to stay and work in Madrid or the rest of Spain you should budget

around €1,000 to cover yourself until your first pay-check.

What if I get sick in Madrid?

If you need urgent medical attention, you can use the Spanish National Health service.

There are a number of insurance companies that offer their own health insurance ser-

vices at a cost of about 50 Euros/month with almost 100% coverage of all medical costs.

We recommend that you get health insurance before you travel.
