portable computer Limited willingness to pay
4
Mobile television: 3 essential principles
anytime
anywhere
anything
5
Anytime?
= Watching television every moment of the day
(S. vrouw)
But, also dedicated viewers especially in the evening and at night (GSM)
(K., man, 26j.)

Anywhere?
= Watching mobile television wherever you want Private places:
Mainly at home (bathroom, kitchen, toilet, garden, bedroom,…) Friends place, car
Public places: In the city, public transport (bus, tram, train) Ohters: waiting room doctor, pay desk shop, café, restaurant,
library, …
But Use in public spaces sometimes limited
Social pressure Safety

Anything?
Same content as traditional television News and information most important Series
But: Different levels of viewing intensity Short time sessions Current broadcasting scheme focussed on one "prime time" moment
(evening) No need to see advertisements or unpleasant programs: "Mijn pauze is van twaalf tot één en dan zijn het enkel belspelletjes, dus dat is enorm
vervelend." (K., vrouw, 26j.)
(N., man, 33j.)
8 Three different categories of mobile television practices
9
Mobile television as a primary activity Mobile television as a substitution for traditional television
Primary activity: dedicated viewer Active No other television in the neighbourhood Traditional television occupied: second television at home
(A., vrouw, 33j.)
(P., man, 39j.)
10
Mobile television as a secondary activity
Mobile television as a gadget and an important ‘time killer’ >Television in the pocket
Recreation while waiting, travelling, … . Less important then primary activity Short viewing times Semi active viewing
(L., man, 29j.)
(T., man, 46j.)
11
Mobile television as a tertiary activity Mobile television as a ‘wall paper’
Secondary activity near cooking, eating, walking, going to the toilet, working on the computer, … .
Passive watching activity Popular channels: music channels such as JIMtv Popular program: news
(A., vrouw, 47j.)
(E., vrouw, 24j.)
12
Mobile television is not the same
13
Mobile television on a portable computer Often used as a second television at home (primary television practice)
If no other television in the neighborhood When the traditional television is occupied A more regular television experience (bigger screen)
Full screen view Also used as a ‘wall paper’ while working on the computer or surfing
on the internet, … (tertiary television practice)
Saving time (watching the news for ex.) Less used as a ‘time killer’ (secondary television practice)
Not suited for short sessions High start up effort
Less suitable in public spaces
14
Mobile television on a mobile phone
Often used as a ‘time killer’ and seen as a gadget (secondary television practice) Power of availability - always having it with you Low start up effort Enables watching mobile television anywhere, anytime Saves time
Also used as a ‘wall paper’ or compagnon while cooking, eating, working … . (tertiary television practice)
Saving time Pleasant
Less used as a substitution for traditional television (primary television practice) Small screen Mobile phone is in the first place a phone (battery,...)
15
Mobile television: still work in progress
Still major improvements necessary Laptop: full screen size, interface design Mobile phone: screen (iphone), antenna Full coverage (nationwide, indoor & outdoor)
Digital television is interactive television Interactive functionalities are the standard
Flexview EPG VOD
