1936-1939Spanish Civil War
Nationalist forces led by General Francisco Franco rebelled against the Democratic
government of Spain.
1940Battle of Britain
This battle was fought in the air. The British lost nearly 1,000 planes, the Germans 1,700. Germans bombed civilian as well as military targets, destroying houses, factories, and churches
and conducted a months-long bombing campaign against London itself known as the “blitz”.
1941Pearl Harbor
The american military base was attacked by the Japanese. In result the United States entered
the war.
1942Battle of Coral Sea
This was a battle that took place between Japanese and American aircraft carriers. Technically this battle was a draw
but it proved a victory for the US because it forced the Japanese to call of their attack on New Guinea. This battle was
a turning point for the US because it gave them confidence.
1942Bataan Death March
This was a forced march of American and Filipino prisoners of war under brutal conditions by the Japanese Army. More than 7,000 people died
during this 60 mile journey.
1942 Battle of Midway
This was a turning point for the US because they stopped Japanese forces from advancing. Torpedo planes and dive bombers sank 4 Japanese aircraft carriers, along
with all 250 aircraft on board and many of Japan’s most experienced pilots. America only lost one carrier.
1942Manhattan Project
This was a code name for the project that developed the atomic bomb. It cost several
billon dollars to create the bomb and employed tens of thousands of people.
1943Women’s Army Corps (WAC)
United States Army group established in World War II so that women could serve in noncombat roles.
It provided clerical workers, truck drivers, instructors, and lab technicians for the US.
1944D-Day
On June 6, 1944 the Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy, France and pushed
back their forces.
1945Battle of Bulge
The Germans caught the Allies by surprise, creating a bulge in the American line and captured several key towns. The Americans
fought back despite the conditions. This battle was an attempt to drive a wedge between American and British forces. Instead it
crippled Germany by using its reserves and demoralizing its troops.
1945Hiroshima and Nagasaki
On August 6, 1945 US pilots dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Within 2 minutes of the
explosion more than 60,000 people were dead or missing.
1945Holocaust
This was lead by the Nazi Party with the leader, Adolf Hitler. He constructed a mass murder of
more than 6 millions Jews and others.
1947–1991Cold War
This was a worldwide rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union. This war involved many countries and became almost as big as
the World War.
1948Marshall Plan
This was a foreign policy that offered economic aid to Western European countries after World War II. Over the next 4 years the United States gave
$13 billon in grants to European Countries.
1956Interstate Highway Act
It authorized the spending of $32 billion to build 41,000 miles of highway. This was life
changing and allowed people to travel from place to place easily.
