U Using a sharp knife, cut the wing andf tail pieces from the balsa sheets. Using320 - 400 grit sandpaper, square' up theparts and round the edges indicated in theillustrations. Lightly sand the surfaces ofall parts.

II Apply glue to the root edges of the wings,allow glue to become tacky and press

\ together on a flat surface. Repeat th isprocess with the elevons.

n The balsa parts are more easily finisherl at'iii this time. To obtain a smooth finish, apply

balsa fillercoat to all surfaces and allow todry. When dry, lightly sand with #400 sand-paper. Apply fillercoat, let dry and sandagain. Although two coats of filler may notgive a completely smooth finish, it is areasonable compromise between unfinishedand smooth balsa. Heavy surfaces may re-duce the glide ability of the Mach 10. Thesmall balsa cones which form the ends of thebelly tank should also be filled and sanded atthis time.

. II When all balsa parts have been pre-finished,assembly may begin. Sand the top centerjoint of the wing to remove the filler mater-ial. This will give the glue more "bite" intothe wood. Lay the wing on a flat surface,apply a generous bead of glue on the jointand place the large main body tube on thejoint with the back of the body tube extend-ing 1 3/8" beyond the rear edge of the wing.

~'BApply glue to the simulated cannons (launchlugs) as shown and cement to either side ofthe wing-body tube joints. These not onlyserve as launching lugs, /but provide addedstrength to the wing-body assembly.

this edge and, carefully sighting along bodytube, press into place on the top center ofthe rear portion of the tube. The aft end ofthe stabilizer should be 1/4" forward of therear of the body tube. Hold in place untilglue begins to set. Sight along the body andpush the stabilizer gently to right or left untilit is in vertical alignment with the rest of theassembly. Allow to dry, then run a bead ofglue along both sides of the stabilizer-bodytube joint and smooth into an even filletwith your finger.

v II Using proceedures as in previous steps, glueI~ the elevon assembly to the top forward edge

of the stabilizer.

~/mWhile the glue is drying on the main bodyassembly, begin the engine mount assembly.Place a generous bead of glue around theinside of the engine tube (3/4" dia. x 6 1/2"long) at a depth of about 2 1/2". Insert thethrust ring into the end of the tube and usingthe engine spacer tube, push the thrust ringforward until the spacer tube extends only3/8" from the end of the body tube. With-draw the spacer tube immediately so it willnot be accidentally cemented in place.

n;t Place the spacer tube alongside the enginetube with the spacer tube projecting 3/8".Mark the engine tube at the top end of thespacer. Cut a short (1/8") slit in the enginetube on this mark. Press one end of themetal engine lock into the slit.

!II Slip the mylar lock ring over the end of theIII engine tube. Apply a bead of glue around

the tube at a point 1 1/2" from the end andslide the mylar ring down the tu be, imbed-ding it into the glue. This secures the enginelock yet allows it to spring outward at theend for insertion or removal of rocket engines.

Turning the body of the Mach 10 upsidedown, cement the engine tube into the mainbody, centered with the tail and with theengine lock end of the engine tube even withthe back end of the main body. Sight alongthe engine tube to make sure it is centeredwith the long axis of the body. Allow glueto dry before setting the assembly down.

lZliJCut the cockpit from the cardstock sheet.Carefu 11'1 bend the canopy on the dottedlines and press the front edges together.Secure temporarily with masking tape andrun a bead of glue along the inside of thejoint. When the glue has dried, remove themasking tape. Run a bead of glue aroundthe inside edge of the cockpit, position it onthe top of the body tube 1" from the noseand press the edges of the cockpit downonto the body. Hold until the glue sets.

~ IIIGlue one of the small nose cones into thebelly tank tube (1/2" dia. x 1 1/2" long),Run a bead of glue along this assembly andcement to the bottom of the main body asshown. The cone that fits into the forwardend of the tank is not glued in, but is leftremovable for adding' flight ballast to thetank. Since this forward cone catches mostof the landing shock, it is a good idea tosmear an even film of glue over its surfa6e.The dried glue forms a hard finish that will

withstand the skidding produced in landIng.

m Smear a thin film of glue around the inside~ front edge of the body tube and push the

mylar reinforcing ring into the body. Thisring strengthens the front of the body andprevents fraying of the inside of the tube.

m This completes basic assembly. Socket theIWI forward cone into the belly tank and prepare

for painting. The plastic "target" nose conewill be inserted after painting is completed.

m PAINTING: Shown at right are two suggestedIII paint schemes for the Mach 10. You may

brush paint the model with airplane "dope"or spray it with an aerosol type paint.Spraying is, of course, the fastest way andusually produces better results. A paintstand may be made by taping a wood dowelinto the engine spacer tube and anchoringthe other end of the dowel in a vise orwooden base.

If you spray the model, remember to holdthe spray can approx imately 12" from themodel, moving the can up and down in evenstrokes. Do not attempt to spray the modelin one heavy application. Rather sprayseveral light coats, allowing time between forthe paint to dry. Don't apply too muchpaint. Remember, the Mach 10 is a glider.Too much paint might make it sink like theproverbial rock.

When the paint is dry, apply the decalsaccording to instructions printed on thebacking material.

!!!t The pre-£olored plastic cone is now assembled by simply~ snapping the base into the cone. Using the piece of string

included in the kit, tie the streamer to the nose cone base.Let the streamer hang down inside the airplane and pushthe nose cone base into the engine tube. When launchingthe MACH 10, place chute wadding inside the engine tubeto protect the base of the nose cone.

BALANCING THE MACH 10~ Locate a clear grassy area to test glide your ship. To simulate~ actual glide conditions, remove the plastic nose cone and

streamer and insert an expended engine casing into the enginecompartment. Take a small piece of the clay provided in thekit and roll into a small cylinder. Remove the nose from thebelly tank, drop in the clay and socket the cone back inplace. Holding the Mach 10 by the belly tank, throw itstraight out from shoulder height. If it noses in sharply,remove a little of the clay. If it climbs and stalls add a littlemore clay. Add or subtract ballast until you obtain a niceglide of about 10-12 feet. The Mach 10 is not a timeendurance contest glider, and it glides rather fast. If theplane banks sharply right or left, check the stabilizer align-ment. Hold the stabilizer-bodY joint over a light for about30 seconds to soften the glue. With the glue joints nowpliable, bend the stabilizer In the direction opposite thedirection of bank (je: the plane banks to the right, bend thestabilizer slightly to the left and visa versa. The glue jointwill cool and harden again in a few minutes. Once a properglide has been obtained, you are ready to launch. Theremaining amount of clay, not used for balance, should beinserted into the plastic nose cone to serve as takeoff ballast.

LAUNCHING THE MACH 10

~ The Mach 10 can be flown from any conventional launcher.~ Launch the Mach 10 with the following engines:

B4-2 approximately 250' altitudeC6-3 approximately 500' altitude

m Prepare an engine and igniter according to the instructions5aI which accompany all Centuri engines. Insert the engine into

the rear of the Mach 10 and lock in place. Push a small pieceof flameproof chute wadding into the front of the enginetube. Socket the plastic nose cone in place, letting thestreamer hang down inside the body tube. Launch theMach 10 from a 1/8" x 36" launch rod. Use electricalignition only as outlined in the Centuri engine instructions.

m Upon ignition, the Mach 10 rises vertically under power,peels~ off in a slow arc during the delay phase and fires the target

marker at the ejection point. From there, the Mach 10 beginsa wide circling glide back to earth.

If your model tends to arch over backwards, try launchingat an angle of about 600 with the stabilizer pointed up.

The Mach 10 is a fun-to-fly model and is great for informalcontests. Get together with your friends and compete forflight duration, landing accuracy and target marker zone dropaccuracy. With a little experimentation, your Mach 10 canbe programed to do just what you want it to do - every time.

When launching, always adhere to the following safety checks:

1. Launch in an open area, well away from mainstreets, powerlines, pedestrians, traffic, and airportapproach paths.

2. Be sure the firing panel is disarmed and batteryleads disconnected before wiring up the engine.

3. Check for low flying aircraft before launching.

4. Give a short countdown to alert spectators.

5. Always keep in mind that a model rocket is ascientific instrument, not a toy!
