Hi everyone,

We’ve nearly reached the half way point for 2018, and the cold weather has certainly set in. There have been many highlights so far this term, and some great improvements in student learning.

Indigenous Art Designs

It was great to see our indigenous students learning about art and history, through the support of our local community members. The students attended the Wellington Art Gallery last month, which included a special behind the scenes tour, and last fortnight worked with a local aboriginal elder to explore designs for an alternative uniform polo shirt that embraces indigenous culture. We’re looking forward to seeing the final designs.

Respectful Relationships

This week our school council engaged in conversation about our role in the statewide initiative known as Respectful Relationships. You may have read about this important initiative in previous newsletters; it stems from the Royal Commission into Family Violence, and takes an educational look at how we can support young people to develop positive and healthy relationships with all people in their life. It is underpinned by notions of self-confidence, resilience, emotional literacy, and interpersonal skills. We are in the process of planning for lessons and broader community engagement – I look forward to sharing more with you as this important work evolves.

Highlights

There have been many other highlights, from our successful Grade 6 transition day, to our senior prom night, significant increase in the number of members on Parents’ Club, our student leadership

and student voice initiatives growing week by week, improved student attendance in all year levels, and some great student learning results coming from our teachers’ collaborative work.

Darwin and Indonesia

This week we see students heading off to Darwin for the Year 10 camp, and Bali for our Indonesian Study Tour. We know these experiences provide rich learning for our students, and we wish them all the best. We’ll aim to keep you posted with stories and photos via our official Facebook page.

The School for Student Leadership

Later this week I will head to Marlo to visit our Year 9 leaders, who have spent the term at the School for Student Leadership. In particular, I look forward to hearing their plans for their Community Learning Project; a project they have designed over the past term, with the plan to carry it out over the next 12 months upon their return to Maffra. We have a proud history of connecting students with the leadership school, with great outcomes each year from students undertaking their community project.

Finally, I wish everyone all the best for the winter break, and look forward to catch up in Term 3, if not before.

Assistant Principal’s Report—June

As we get closer to the end of another busy term, I wanted to update our community about some of

the ways that our students have and will receive feedback in recent times.

NAPLAN

Congratulations to our Year 7 and 9 students for the positive approach they applied to this year’s NAPLAN testing.

This year we trialled holding the Year 9 tests at Maffra Memorial Hall under exam conditions. The students excelled

in being respectful of their peers while giving the tests their best efforts, they also gained valuable experience for

future exams that will also be held at the hall. Feedback from both staff and students about the new venue was

overwhelmingly positive. Likewise, the year 7 students approached the testing in open classrooms with a growth

mindset and are now waiting patiently to receive their feedback.

Interestingly, one of the main issues with NAPLAN is by the time students receive their feedback, the feedback is

obsolete. We have recently received notification that next year’s NAPLAN testing will be performed online, with

feedback being provided sooner. Stay tuned!

PROGRESS REPORTS

Last week students received feedback about their ORGANISATION, EFFORT, PERSISTENCE, BEHAVIOUR and RESPECT

through progress reports. These results can be accessed on COMPASS. Students then reflected on the feedback and

set learning goals in their Learn 2 Learn classes. Well done to the majority of students who achieved excellence in

their performance or growth in their learning. Students should now be engaging in conversations with their teachers

about how to achieve further improvement in their learning.

LEARNING TASKS & SEMESTER REPORTS

With the semester fast coming to an end, students should be finishing off Common Assessment Tasks (CATs) and

receiving continuous feedback about what they are learning and what do they need to do next to progress their

learning. This feedback will be collated and reported along with standards from the Victorian Curriculum in the end

of semester reports. Semester reports will be published and available for viewing on COMPASS in the last week of

term.

What seems like a lifetime ago…late last term, 12 Maffra SC students from Years 8 – 12 and 6 Yarram SC students (Years 9 & 10) along with Mr McIntosh, Mrs Evans, Lyn Kerrison (Assistant Principal Yarram SC) and Brett Pedlow (Principal Yarram SC) visited China as part of our schools’ ongoing sister school relationship and ‘Engage with Asia’ program.

After an 11 hour non-stop flight we landed in Beijing where we commenced our tour of China. There was excitement in the air as we gathered all of our things and headed off to find our luggage. After getting through customs unscathed...and a quick stop at the toilet (The Happy Room) we caught a train / people mover where we travelled from one side of the Beijing Airport to the other in order to find our guide ‘Shin’ (John) who would accompany us for the next 4 days.

It had been snowing in Beijing during the day so the night air was chilly...1 degree Celsius. Coats were pulled out from our suitcases as Shin took us to our fabulous accommodation - The Feitian Grand Hotel...where the students found the banquet breakfasts to be one of the highlights.

So where did we go and what did we see…

The Pearl Market – Our first chance to try out our bartering skills. Most of the students found a bargain however Mrs Evans’ and a few others would have to work on their bartering skills over the next two weeks.

We participated in a lesson in Tai Chi at the Temple of Heaven.

The Great Wall – The Great Wall was one of the highlights for all of the students and staff as we rode a gondola to the wall and then after eating lunch on the wall we took in the history and majestic beauty of the Wall as we walked…up and down steps for what seemed like many kilometers. This wonder of the world will be something that our students will never forget.

Beijing Zoo & The National Olympic Stadium - We saw some Giant Panda’s in a packed Beijing Zoo and then we visited the Birds Nest – the Olympic Stadium and the Olympic precinct where we sat in the stands and imagined what it would have been like when the Olympics were on.

The Forbidden City – This was an amazing place which went on and on…so many beautiful temples and buildings.

Tiananmen Square – Due to a conference being on we only saw this from afar. Everyone tried using Chinese yoyos after taking a rickshaw to see one of the last remaining traditional family homes.

Drum tower – saw us climb the steepest steps for the whole trip.

Various Markets & Bazaars – Where our bartering skills slowly improved.

Summer Palace – and a Dragon boat ride

Bullet trains – travelling to our destinations at 360kms per hour.

Xi’an City Wall – We rode on the top of the wall which wrapped around the old city for 13kms…some students, Xander and Kerr, did two laps…lapping Mrs E who took in the sights at a leisurely pace.

The Terracotta Warriors and Horses – A fascinating experience and to think that there are still so many pits that still havel not been dug up.

Changshu - Visited our Sister School – ‘Changshu – Experimental Middle School’ – Our students attended and participated in various classes including a music and an art class.

Museums – We visited many museums where we were immersed in the amazing history of China.

Disneyland – Shanghai – A cold day and lots of lining up…The ride of choice – ‘Triton’

Shanghai – Shopping and Markets where we did our last minute shopping prior to coming home.

Throughout the trip our accommodation was fantastic and we were looked after by various guides in each major city we visited. On behalf of Andrew McIntosh and I we would like to congratulate our students on their exemplary behaviour whilst we were away. All of the students had a fabulous time and have formed new friendships with not only with students whom they travelled with from MSC but also with the students and staff from Yarram SC.

We look forward to visiting Yarram Secondary College next term when they host their sister school and we look forward to a visit from our Sister School in 2019.

China trip 2018

The trip was a great experience learning new things and meeting new

people. For example, this year we went with some of the kids from

Yarram which was one of the best parts. Getting to know them and

becoming great friends. Not only making friends with them but also

talking to our tour guides and getting to know the people from Maffra

as well.

One of the most interesting things we did was going to the school over

there. While we were there we went to two different schools seeing how

different the two schools where to each other and how different they

were to our school as well.

Overall the two best things we did were go to the Great Wall of China

and the market. The market was good because we could see all the

different things people where selling and you got to talk to people and

talk about the prices. The great wall was good because we got to go for

a walk and look at all the views and talk to our new friends and take

photos.

Science News

In2Science eMentoring Program:

For students who enjoy Science and/or would like to explore the possibilities in studying Science,

there is an excellent opportunity in the In2Science eMentoring Program.

This is a 10 week program that involves students at Maffra SC regularly connecting (via a video conference link) with a

University student studying Science. The program has been running at Maffra SC for a number of years, and many

students have benefitted by gaining insights into what studying science at university is like; by discussing their

schoolwork; by learning study tips and by improving oral communication skills.

Expressions of interest are being sought from students in Years 8, 9, 10 or 11 who would like to participate in the program in Semester 2. Please contact Kristen Raine or email [email protected]

John Monash Science School Rural Exchange

Program

Congratulations to Joe Capurso and Narelle Brown who have been successful in

their applications for a place in the Regional Science Exchange program at the John

Monash Science School – a specialist secondary school for science, mathematics

and associated technologies.

Open to Year 10 students with a passion, interest and talent for science and mathematics, the exchange will occur for 3 weeks in Term 3 and will be a wonderful opportunity for Joe and Narelle to experience hands-on learning in a variety of scientific disciplines. As part of the program, Joe and Narelle will be provided with homestay accommodation with a family connected to John Monash Science School.

Student Leadership This year a new approach has been taken to establish student leadership teams in

the college. Each year level has their own team who is supported by a teacher.

Teams would love more members so if you are interested in joining, speak to your

year level coordinator or your School Captains, Michael and Adelle.

Each year level team has selected year level captains to represent them at whole

school student leadership meetings. These meetings are held every fortnight by

the school captains who represent the year 11/12 team. This makes everyone aware of what other year levels are up to

and helps keep the student leadership goals consistent within the school.

The Year 7 team had a great term one, supporting the day against bullying by

putting together a presentation on what bullying is and conducting a role play.

Currently, they are looking at starting up a food drive amongst the staff rooms to

support the breakfast club that runs each week on a Friday morning.

Great interest has allowed the Year 8’s to form a strong team and hold regular

meetings. The Year 8 team is led by captains Angus Neaves and Sarah Dekkers

who are valuable members of the whole school student leadership team. The

group is passionate about getting a bike shed at the college in the hope that it

may encourage more people to ride to school. They are currently looking for

some creative ideas for fundraising. The Year 8 team also recently organised a

round robin dodgeball competition for year 7 and 8 students. Despite the team

visiting classes and promoting the competition, it wasn’t as successful as expected. The Year 8 team are working hard

to keep the competition continuing as they believe it is a great way to bring together students and have some fun at

lunchtime.

Unfortunately there has been a halt to student leadership in Year 9 because most members are currently at the School

for Student Leadership (Snowy River Campus). They will be returning with great ideas

for the team. The Year 9 captains are Chloe Williamson and Alera Leon-Robbins.

The Year 10 team is led by Joe Capurso and Narelle Brown who have been regularly

attending whole school student leadership meetings. Earlier this term, the team held

a casual day to buy security cameras to place in the F-wing corridor. $505 was raised

and the cameras have now been installed. The group of students that attended the

School for Student Leadership last year are still continuing their Community Learning

Project to refurbish the F-wing toilets. Currently these students have raised around

$7000 through various fundraisers. A meeting will be held very soon where the

students will make a list of things they want to change in the toilets. They will then

begin to get quotes. All students are very excited about the refurbishment of the F-

wing toilets!

The combined Year 11 and 12 student leadership team have been working hard to

organise this years ‘Senior Years Prom’. Students have been designing and printing

tickets as well as organising the venue, food, security, decorations, themes, protocols

and activities for the night. The team is comprised of school captains, house captains,

arts captains and other passionate students.

The Arts Captains have begun meetings supported by Ms Bramstedt and have come

up with a list of ideas. The team want to run drama workshops for students, have

musical performances and run an open mic night. They also want to do student-run

workshops for year 6’s as part of their transition to the college in the hope that more

people will get involved in the art and music faculty.

Federation Uni Trip

On Friday 11th

May, both Mr Lisiecki and I accompanied the 10C2 students to Federation University for a day where students experienced life at a University campus. For those who did not go to the university it was a valuable day as many of the Federation Training takes place at this venue.

Students participated in a study session, a Great Race to familiarise themselves with the University campus, had a Q&A session with current students as well as

experienced a business lecture.

Once again it was a pleasure to accompany the year 10 students who were great ambassadors for Maffra Secondary College.

Mock Interviews On Friday 4

th May, 40 year 10 students participated in a mock interview as part of their 10C2

course work.

The aim of the interview was to provide a real life experience where the students had to prepare resumes and covering letters, dress appropriately and actually answer questions relating to the career path they wish to pursue.

We would like to thank the following individuals for their assistance with the interviews. David Ward (AGA), Shannon Jewell (APM), Wing Commander Sharyn Bolitho (Defence Force), Howard Stobo (Skillinvest), Brad Evans (formally 545 Primary School), Nathan Smith (Duart’s Homestead), Gerald Adams (Adams Accounting), Brad Neilson (Tinamba Hotel), Michael Roberts (DEDJTR), Liz Bell (Gippsland Times), Katy Costigan (Bairnsdale Hospital) and Brenton Dinsdale (Gippsport)

The feedback from these employers was not only positive; it allowed students to focus on areas where improvement could be directed. All the students are to be congratulated as they conducted themselves in a professional manner. The morning was a great success for all involved.

Assisting with Primary School Sport

We have had a number of mainly year 9 and 10 students assist with both the Sale and District and the Heyfield and

District Winter Sports Carnivals over the past two weeks.

I would just like to share with you some comments we have received regarding their efforts

All of the Maffra Secondary AFL umpires were extraordinary. They showed confidence with their umpiring, they were

reliable, they were responsible and were certainly exemplary in the way they represented Maffra SC. – Lucas Mowat –

The students (netball umpires) were exceptional in terms of attitude, behaviour and their expertise. They "made our

Last Friday I convened the Sale and District, Winter Sport Football Competition in Maffra. Twelve of your students were in

attendance as our umpires for the day. I just wanted to let you know how fabulous they were and how grateful we were for

their assistance on the day. It was a big day of umpiring for them and they had little to no break in between the games.

Numerous parents, coaches and teachers commented on the great job they did. They umpired fairly and appropriately and

were a great example for the primary school students. They were lovely to interact with and well mannered. - Grace

As usual the students were fantastic, we couldn’t have ran the day without them. They were all happy to do what was

needed/asked. The boys stayed around the footy for the day and were either scoring, field umpiring, boundary umpiring or

goal umpiring. They made sure teams were ready to play and kept to the schedule (that can be a hard task!). The girls were

terrific too, either scoring or umpiring the netball when needed. If you could pass on our thanks to them again, it would be

greatly appreciated. Damien Hogan commented on their behaviour on the bus, he was very impressed.

Inter school badminton

Maffra Secondary College intermediate boys and girls badminton teams participated at Yarram Secondary College

on the 7th

May. Displaying a keen interest in the sport, we fielded 2 boys and a girls’ team this year.

The girls team participated enthusiastically against Yarram, Traralgon and Sale College however their opposition

proved far too strong with the girls losing the majority of their games. To their credit, our girls displayed with de-

termination and a fine spirit,

The boys A team defeated Yarram, Traralgon and Maffra B however they found Sale College a challenge in the final

games, going down 4 games to 2 games.

The B team acquitted themselves very well defeating both Yarram and Traralgon then they gave Maffra A a run for

their money in several games.

The students represented Maffra Secondary College in an exemplary manner by displaying effort, sportsmanship and persistence. Well done!



Biggest Morning Tea

Students from across the college were involved in a joint

effort to raise money for the Cancer Council in May at this

year’s Biggest Morning Tea. The event, run by the Maffra

Cancer Council Group, was held at the Maffra Bowls Club.

Students from Year 7 prepared decorations for the event,

by painting huge teapot and tea cup cut-outs under the

guidance of Ms Healy. Our VCAL students took to the

lathes to cut the shapes. A group of Year 10 students

participated in the morning tea for their community

service by helping serve tea, cakes and food at the event.

Thanks to Emma Blake, Jessica Bower, Maddie Clark, Abbi Cozzi, Jenna Ross and Chelsea Smith for representing the

college so well. Many of the attendees were very impressed by how professional, kind and courteous you all were.

Marni Bosman-Hughes, Yr 11, wowed the audience with her sweet tunes on the guitar. Lisa Manning donated some of

her hand made scarves and bags to sell at the event. It was truly a joint effort.

The Biggest Morning Tea in Maffra raised just under $1500 for cancer research. I would like to thank all those students

involved, as well as teachers Ms Clancy, Ms Healy, Mr Johnson and Ms Bramstedt, for supporting the event. I would

also like to thank Deirdre Ralph and the volunteers at the Maffra Cancer Council for allowing us to be involved. With so

many dear friends and family being afflicted with cancer, our fight against this terrible disease has never been so

important. If students or families are interested in being involved in future events, please see Mrs Lambert at the

College.
