Cheltenham’s Music Network Developer

A couple of weeks ago there was an article in the Gloucestershire Echo about the 2 Pigs diversifying its programming to keep punters coming through the door in the face of eco-nomic hardship. The plight of the 2 Pigs is something that reflects the struggles in our (or any) musical community from top to bottom in sustaining itself.

I wrote a VERY Long blog about it (available at the address below) and concluded that it comes down to apathy and ignorance - NOT lack of talent and choice – that are now stifling growth of an extremely diverse music scene and the venues that support it.

There are problems getting a bigger crowd out to shows, but whose fault is it? Wouldn’t it be lovely to turn around and point the finger at the government and say “it’s the economy?” Wouldn’t it be lovely to say that people are

MAG would like to say a special thank you to the

Popular Music course at The University of Gloucestershire for their contri-bution to the distribution of the fanzine.

apathetic and ignorant and “can’t just be both-ered to come out?”

Perhaps it’s a tiny bit to do with it, but the re-sponsibility remains with us to support one an-other. It’s not their failure to listen, it’s our failure to communicate. Bands, venues and promoters all have their part to play in sustaining a music scene and a god-damn Facebook event is not the answer to your marketing problems.

Our scene will reach a critical mass with bands and venues (if it hasn’t already) and without facilities for young bands (>18) to grow through the experience of playing a circuit, we will be digging up our own foundations we’ve spent years laying with bloody bare hands. At the mo-ment it’s only the Pigs that caters for the next generation of musicians. I would suggest that other venues and promoters should be looking to this critical resource to supply the next round of entertainment for their drinkers over the next few years.

So a message to everyone out there for the next time you want to post/tweet/chat about your band, event, new album or venue - why not share someone else’s instead?

Who knows. You might just earn them - and yourselves - another fan.

Fabio Thomas On...Snap Back RecordsAs shown through the opening of Sound Music Venue, the 2 Pigs declaration in the echo to provide alternative entertainment and Rise’s fifth birthday party at the Frog, Cheltenham’s live music scene is indeed growing. However, whilst the live music is the on the increase, Cheltenham has a lack of new record labels representing local bands. There are a large amount talented bands and musicians which with more representation, would flourish in the area. Therefore, the scene is set for new record label to appear…. (Cue – Enter Snapback Records)

FT: How, when and why did you set up SnapBack Records?Matt (SnapBack Records): “We are working towards our official launch in January which will be celebrated with an official launch party. We launched the label with the vision of allowing previously unheard bands and artists a solid platform in which to showcase their music to a wider audience. The four record label founders all have an expert knowledge of the industry and will work passionately in order to allow our acts to reach and exceed their potential.”

FT: Are then any specific styles of music that you are looking to recruit?Matt: “SnapBack Records specialise in indie, pop and folk music and accept demos from all over the country. Due to the current nature of the industry we will mainly concentrate on digital sales but should there be a demand for a physical product from our acts, then this is something that we will look at provid-ing.”

FT: Do you want to have an influence over the style of music that you are promot-ing?Matt: “We strongly believe that our artists should be granted creative freedom and as a label will offer our artists support and industry knowledge in which to allow their creativity to flourish. We really believe in giving talented and deserving artists a platform to be heard and look forward to showcasing our first signing ‘Jonny Found a Raygun’ in the near future!”

All demos / enquires should be sent through there ‘Fresh Prince’-esque Facebook page or via [email protected] .

FurorePromoting local bands, venues and talent.

2012 has been an incredible year for us, since launch-ing Furore we have had the pleasure of meeting many fantastic people both partaking in and supporting the local music scene. Witnessed a multitude of talent and attended outstanding events across the year which we wont be forgetting anytime soon. These are our highlights or 2012.

Crooks at 2000 Trees Festival by Alice Muir. Crooks received the honor of being asked to open up The Cave on the Friday afternoon, succeeding in invigorat-ing the enthralled crowd for the rest of the day. They did themselves extremely proud.

Jim Lockey & the Solemn Sun headlining at Two Pigs by Alice Muir. With fans packed wall to wall JL&TSS preform a magically intimate show, although they never fail to captivate and impress, the crowd were truly overwhelmed by how tremendous it was. I for one will certainly never forget it.

I The Lion headlining at The Road to the Big Bang Festival by Rachel Purchase. After an amazing night of talented bands all fighting it out to get a place in the line up of the Big Bang Festival in February, I The Lion must of been feeling the pressure. But as soon as they stepped on to the stage you felt the passion and energy filling the room. It was definitely a night to remember and left everyone excited about what’s to come in February.

Stillbust playing at Frogfest by Rachel Purchase. Ex-citing, eventful and energetic. Frogfest was one of the biggest highlights of the year, there’s not much to say other than if you weren’t there then you missed out. Big time.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us thus far! We have some very exciting events coming up in the new year!

Have a very Merry Christmas,

The Furore Team

10 Minute ReviewJohn Cooper Clarke - Gloucester Guildhall 19/10/2012 | Picture: johncooperclarke.com

I saw the Pogues in Bristol around 5 years ago. Shane MacGowan had to be helped onto the stage by a roadie and helped off again every fifteen minutes or so for a fag break. He was an indecipherable drunk, the only dif-ference between him and the man in the gutter was that MacGowan was just about holding onto a microphone. But when he sang for those three minutes at a time, he sang like an angel sent directly from Donegal (via Lon-don, obviously).

John Cooper Clarke, a spindly poet from Salford, is a kind of Shane McGowan in reverse – obviously somewhat ravaged from drink and drugs, he’s still sharp and witty and speaks incredibly well. Between poems he has the heir of a stand-up comedian (and the hair of a young Bob Dylan) as he fires out witty remark after clever witty remark in a well-rehearsed stream of consciousness. The audience pause for a second and then a wave of belly laugh ripples from the front to the back. The Guildhall tonight is sold out – we are in the palm of a cultural icon, after all. Yet, for a poet, tonight’s hour and half set is light on actual poetry. Six or seven poems wasn’t quite enough. When he mumbled through ‘Chickentown’, you could

put it down to one too many good nights out in the seventies, but forgetting ‘Beasley Street’ was unforgivable. I guess that’s John Cooper Clarke for you. Nobody said it would be straightforward.

Cheltenham Rise Records’ 5th Birthday CelebrationFeaturing: Frank Turner & Sonic Boom Six

Pictures: Sam Wood | Words: Staff at Rise

On Saturday the 10th November, local independent record store Rise celebrated their 5th Birthday at the Frog and Fiddle with one of the town’s best live line-ups in recent memory.

After enlisting the help of Xtra Mile Recordings, 5 acts (including a very special guest) were bought together. From the very start it was clear it was going to sing-a-long show, with a conclusion that will live long in the memory of everyone lucky enough to get a ticket!

First up Fighting Fiction took to the stage with the venue already full and brimming with excitement, fol-lowed by modern ska pioneers Imperial Leisure, who’s funky brass filled songs got the party atmosphere really going. Next up boys Jim Lockey & the Solemn Sun took to the stage to a heroes welcome, playing there 1st home town show since the summer. Feed-ing off the crowd’s enthusiasm (at points it seemed most people in the room knew all of the words to their songs!) it was one of the best live performances we have seen and the band are putting Cheltenham firmly back on the music map. The penultimate act to take to the stage were Sonic Boom Six who’s sheer energy make them one of the best live acts it the coun-try! At one point they got the whole crowd to sit down, apart from Rise Regular ‘Cowboy John’ who is the one person who has been to every live instore the shop has ever had, which for a man in his 70’s is great dedication.

It was then time for the night’s special guest, and friend of the shop, Frank Turner. 8 months earlier Frank played to a sold out Wembley show and was now playing to a packed out Frog & Fiddle. With the room bursting with people, Frank played a greatest hits set with every word sung back at him as loud as the crowd could manage. With a set that went on for almost an hour longer than scheduled, each moment was being savored by everyone. It was the per-fect end to a brilliant night, a night that served as a celebration of the shop and a thank you to all of the

shop’s loyal customers for the past 5 years. Fittingly Frank finished the night by resurrecting retired song, ‘The Ballad Of Me And My Friends’ to a rapturous reception.

Thanks again to everyone for supporting us, from all of the staff at Rise!
