*FACTS AND FIGURES 2018
• Of the 23.5 million homes in England, 4.7 million are in the private rented sector, 2.4 million are owned by housing associations and there are 1.6 million council homes. The largest 319 housing associations, owning more than 1,000 homes, account for more than 95 per cent of the sector’s stock.
• Around £11.6 billion was spent by housing associations in 2017 on new and existing housing properties. Of this, around £1.6 billion was spent on major repairs and £10 billion was invested in new supply (£6.3 billion for rent and £3.7 billion for shared ownership and outright sales) and the sector reported the completion of 41,000 social homes with 18,000 properties either sold or demolished. Their combined turnover remained static at £20 billion with an operating surplus of £4.1 billion reported.
• The private rented sector is the fastest growing part of the housing market. Overall there are 2.1 million more households in the private renting sector than there were 10 years ago. With the exception of those over 75 years old, the number of private renters has increased across all age groups. The biggest increase has been in the 35-44 years age group, which has more than tripled to over 1.1 million households.
• Purpose-built student accommodation is one of the most lucrative sectors in the UK property industry, currently worth an estimated £45 billion, with planned developments expected to push the total value to over £50 billion in the next two years.
