Magazine Advert Analysis: Marina & the diamonds

This advert is for the Marina and the diamonds single album “Shampain”. The song was co-wrote with Marina Diamandis, Liam Howe and Pascal Gabriel. The song is about, from what Diamandis said in an interview:

“ The depressing side of getting drunk, the obliteration side of having a good time. This was actually the first co-write that I ever did... It was good to write a simpler pop song because when I write on my own the melodies are all over the place. It was good to do something a little bit lighter, and this probably is my lightest track on a record. It's about insomnia and the joys of champagne."

The single was actually released as part of the album “The Family Jewels” her debut album. The song is in the genre of “synthpop” and “new wave”. The way that the writing for “The Family Jewels Marina & the diamonds” in terms of the “look” with the thick writing like its been done in either sharpie or lipstick which with the vintage tones of the pastel green and brown help set the theme of genre (new wave/synthpop). The designation between the sizes of the font in the advert and how much of “Marina” is shown show that the name is more iconic than her image itself. The Photoshop has been edited to give her a less realistic look; she looks like she could have been draw/painted.

The album cover takes up 1/3 of the page at the bottom of the page featuring the bright pink bold title of the album “Shampain” . The layout works, highlighting the key aspects that need to be featured such as the name of the band, the artist and the album.

The feel of the single is that of new wave genre, (hipster movement). The album has a quirky upbeat feel though it does have some hard-hitting lyrics to it, the narrative of the song is about break up and how she (or women) deals with them- “Shampain”. The album title itself is a play on word combining “Champaign” and “Sham” which she sings about in the single.

Marina is shown in a conservative in terms of only her head shows, so she isn’t trying to pull am audience utilizing the male gaze and in contrast to artists like Ke$ha, Miely Cyrus and Shakira that pout in a seductive pose in order to attract the male gaze; Diamandis presents herself smiling to the audience. Her make up is very simple with eye & brow liner with lip-gloss and blush. Which makes her seem to be very natural.
