Page 2: Magazine analysis

Dr.Dre is seen holding a chess piece. This shows that he is making a move (in his life and what he is about to do). This magazine shows that Dr.Dre is releasing something new (Detox Headphones).

This magazine doesn’t advertise the artists music, but the artist himself. This is why the artist is looking directly into the camera which helps to build a relationship between the artist and the reader (target audience).

This shows the reader that the magazine isn't all about Dr.Dre, it still has time to advertise everyone else but right now it is all about Dr.Dre and what he is about to do/release that should hopefully make a change in the music industry.

We know that what he is going to do is going to big as the chess pieces help symbolise the affect it is going to have which is going to be ‘BIG’. By him holding the knight and being in all black, communicates with the audience that he’s the master (tamer of the horse) which shows that he has great control in the music industry. It also shows his intelligence and chess is a game of brain power and intelligence .

Eve is a female American rapper. The rap industry is mainly dominated by males and for a female to be in it, she is making sure that she is recognised for who she is and what she does. She looks directly at the audience (reader) which helps to build a relationship with the audience.

Most male artist take a picture with there mouths closed unless they are posing, Eve however (being female) stands with her mouth open and her hands on her breast. This helps to emphasise the fact that she is a ‘female artist’ who is being recognised for her raw talent.

The name of the magazine is called “Inked” and is about different ‘culture/style/art’ and by looking at Eve we can see the Tattoos (which relate to ‘inked’), the style that Eve portrays which is unique and her own style.

This followed the convention of the hip-hop magazine

covers. It has both artist on the front looking directly at

there audience. Not only does this help build a relationship with the

audience and the artist but it also helps to build an idea of

both the artist having a relationship with each other.

The way the artist are both dressed is quite

informal which gives the essence of ease in what

they do. This helps relate and emphasise to the title of the magazine

“Nicki & Drake

DOMINATION” and it shows that they’ve

reached the stage where they can do what they

want as they are ‘royalty’ in the music

scene.

The word “Royalty” is normally associated with King and Queen and by

having both artist on the front it makes it look like

they are King and Queen of Rap.

One of the side titles also says “The struggle of females

MCs” and by having Nicki Minaj on the front cover

shows that what she is doing is breaking the stereotype of male MCs she is a female artist which isn't what you

normally see in the hip-hop industry as it is mainly male

dominated.

The main convention of hip-hop/rnb magazine covers was that the artist would always look directly into the camera so when printed it looked like the artist was looking at the reader which helped to build and establish a relationship with the reader.

It also has the artist directly in the middle of the page (at a large scale) which helps sell the artist as it shows that what the reader is about to read is all about the artist. The way the artist was positioned and looked helped to sell the artists persona as it shows what the artist is all about from a first glance.
