Victoria McColl’s Media Work AS 1177
Masthead
The name of the magazine is Rolling Stone.
I think this is named after the band the
Rolling Stones, a popular rock band which
relates to the magazine as it is mainly
focusing on rock bands such as The White
Stripes.
Cover Star
Amy Winehouse is the cover star.
Personally I think she is a popular star to
use on this magazine as she leads a rock
and roll lifestyle. Amy Winehouse is a
British star and by including her on the
cover of an American magazine this shows
the impact she has made because she has
star quality and will therefore make the
magazine more appealing.
Cover lines
The cover promotes some of the contents in the
magazine to persuade people to buy it. The names of the celebrities are clearly
visible, and the cover star, Amy Winehouse’s name is in a larger font, to highlight her
significance in the issue as she is the star they have interviewed. It is also in the same
colour as the masthead, this could suggest she is of importance to the magazine.
Audience
The target audience for this particular magazine cover would be men and women
aged 20-40 with an interest in rock music however a different cover star may attract
men in the same age range. The target audience is aimed at people of this age mainly
because of the music and bands featuring in the magazine. The bands and solo artists
featured in the magazine are vintage, older bands therefore appealing to people who
listened to them in their most popular years.
Costume
Amy Winehouse’s costume is very simple showing her wearing a black vest top. This
could signify her rebellious star lifestyle as most celebrities would wear something
more eccentric. She is also showing her bra strap, which is not usually revealed by
stars. However, the top reveals her many tattoo’s and makes her look more like a
‘punk rocker’ than the average pop star. This is also shown in the heading for her
article; ‘The Diva and her Demons’.
Representation
This article is both a negative and positive representation of females as the title ‘The
Diva and her Demons’ shows how Amy Winehouse has a bad reputation for herself as
being a ‘diva’ and has also made mistakes in the past; ‘her demons’. In contrast to
this, many people view being a diva as a good stereotype to fall under. This could also
show how Amy Winehouse has changed as she is willing to talk about her mistakes;
therefore identifying she has done wrong.
Splashes
There are few splashes on this magazine cover, yet this does not mean the magazine
doesn’t advertise its magazine well. The use of band names along the left hand side of
the magazine highlights the features of the magazine through star quality.
