Page 2: Magazine analysis

Colour SchemeThe magazine uses similar colours that all go well together. The white background keeps it simple and focuses attention on the colour. Reds, blacks and golds are used.

PhotoA clear simple large photo is used down the centre of the page. It catches the readers eyes and focuses them on the model. The model is wearing a provocative dress which shows off her cleavage.

LayoutThe layout if the page consists of the big bold heading at the top and then lots of subheadings scattered around the page. These are separated by gold lines so nothing merges into one another.

FontDifferent Fonts are used for subheadings, this makes it clear to the reader and easy for them to read and follow. It adds a creative look and is more pleasing to the eye. More important textual pieces are in bigger font to stand out.

There is the issue number, price and barcode displayed at the bottom left corner of the magazine.

ArticlesEach article is related to the type of magazine it is. It’s a fashion and lifestyle magazine targeted at women.

LayoutVery simplistic, medium shot of model starts half way down the page. Not many articles or writing. The focus is brought to the model for the reader.

Colour SchemeMixture of vibrant colours used for the background. White and black writing contrasts.

There is the issue number, price and barcode displayed at the bottom left corner of the magazine.

FontBold capitalised font written in white as heading. Letters very spaced out to give the idea of individuality and independence.

ArticlesThere isn’t much writing on the cover. The small subheading links to the fact it’s the sports edition of the magazine. The low amount of text may be better for marketing as more people are interested to see what’s inside.

PhotoThe photo is the main focus of the magazine cover. It’s a medium shot of a woman in sports gear linking to the writing ‘the sports special’.

Page 4: Magazine analysis

LayoutQuite simplistic layout. The main focus is the picture as its enlarges and spread over the entire page. The heading is placed at the top with a subheading positioned in the centre of the page.

FontAll the text is written in capitals. This makes it bold and easy to read.

Colour Scheme Black and white is used to contrast with the pink used on the extra text and yellow on anything extra. This makes it more visible and noticeable to the reader.

PhotoThe photo is magnifying the band that are featuring in the magazine. The photo is presented in black and white.

The magazine is free which is indicated by the ‘free’ tag in under the heading.

The fashion and style of the magazine comes across very alternative and indie like. This may show the type of audience the magazine has and what kind of articles would be inside.

Colour SchemeBasic colours (Black, white and red) The colours go well together and are beneficial to fit the genre and alternative look. This creates a theme and makes the magazine look presentable and appealing.

ImagesOne large image positioned off centre to the right of the page. It is in grayscale. When opening the magazine the first thing seen by the reader is the picture. A quote is linked to the person in the image. This shows there is an exclusive inside the magazine.

LayoutThe heading is bold at the top of the page. The text is organised with page numbers at the left hand side in different colour to make it clear to the reader. Sections are separated by thin lines.

FontThe same font is used without the page. However sizes may differ, suggesting the magazine has its own unique style it likes to stick to.

HeadingBold black writing. Large simple font. Catchy name makes it memorable. Centred at the top of the page.

FontThe magazine contents page consists of a formal font in order to get across its sophistication. It is quite cursive which shows femininity and curves and just looks generally more attractive.

HeadingBlack and bold heading. Written in a type writing like font. It takes up a large proportion of the page. The letters are evenly spaced and slightly parted from one another.

Colour SchemeBlack, white red and grey. These colours work very well together and make important things clear to read. The title is written in black and the background of the picture is grey. Sub-headings are written in red to show different categories of articles.

ImagesOne large image of a model is used to the left hand side, off centre of the contents page. It is advertising fashion and the model is wearing provocative minimal clothing to suggest a stereotypical woman's appearance.

LayoutThe picture and mastheading is taking up a large proportion of the page. The main ‘cover stories’ is on the left hand side and much bigger, whereas the rest is positioned on the righ hand side in a smaller font under categories. This prioritises articles over others.

Page 7: Magazine analysis

FontThe font used is very relaxed and ordinary. The focus is more on the layout and images. The more important things are made to be more visible for example the ‘free music downloads’ is capitalised and differs in font choice.

HeadingBig bold heading stands out as soon as the reader opens the magazine. They have used a clever technique as they have place the issue number of the magazine within the ‘T’. The heading is top centre spread over the two pages.

Colour SchemeVibrant colours are used to contrast with the white background and black text. The photos are all bright and lively. This creates a stimulating effect and is beneficial for the style of magazine.

LayoutThis contents page is a double page spread. It features lots of photos scattered around the page. It has different sections for different categories making I easy to understand and follow.

ImagesThe image choice is quite varied. Some are of the younger generation whereas some are older. This may be to show that no matter the age everyone has their story and can live life the way they want.

Page 8: Magazine analysis

LayoutThis is taken from the Rolling Stones magazine. The main focus of this double page spread is the image and title. They are positioned in order for the reader to open the magazine and that be the first thing they see. The photo of Adele is large to show her triumph and success.

TitleWritten in a typewritten font. Takes up half of one side of a page. This shows what the article is about and is the most important when the reader is flicking through the magazine as this will catch their eye.

ImageOne large image is used as this is the main focus of the article. It takes up one whole page. It tis a close up in grayscale.

Colour SchemeThis is a monochrome colour scheme consisting of blacks, whites and greys. This may suggest that Adele is a big star who doesn’t need vibrant colours to stand out. It may suggest the kind of person she is and how she doesn’t want to show off but still live an ordinary life. It’s very simplistic but effective.

LayoutThere is a lot going on in this double page spread. There is more than one article positioned on the right page. On the left is a large image of a band. The heading is in bold and black and positioned off centre at the top of the pages to stand out to the reader.

TitleThe title is capitalised and written in bold black letters. This is contrasted with blue as the heading is highlighted for extra visibility. The title is short and simple. This catches the readers eye when flicking through the magazine.

ImageSeveral images are used throughout the double page spread. This adds colour to the pages and makes it seem more busy and filled with things for the reader to see and read. One large image is used on the left page as this is the main focus of the article.

Colour SchemeA lot of blue is used, particularly to highlight keys words or phrases. This may suggest the magazine is marketed more towards males. Or it could also suggest the magazines is calm and flows as blue is quite a cooling colour. The blue contrast with either a white or black background.

Page 10: Magazine analysis

LayoutThis double page spread uses quite a simplistic layout. The picture positioned on the left side and the text in a box on the right page. The heading isn’t traditionally at the top. It is under the picture positioned to the bottom left.

TitleThe title used red and white in order to be visible over the naturalistic scenery in the picture. It uses a catchy slogan which links to who the article is about. It is placed in a peculiar place but this may work as the magazine may be trying to show its own individuality.

ImageThe image is a simple photograph of Ed Sheeran in London. It is mainly placed on the right page but continues on behind the text box on the left page. It’s effective because it’s nothing extra fancy yet it still works.

Colour SchemeThe scenery is used as a canvas and the main colour scheme is red and white. This may because the picture is taken in London and these are two colours from England’s flag. However it may just be used as they work well together.
