Though it's only a little after 12 a.m., Izzy Martin is already showing her artistic gifts as she begins to play her bright blue electric guitar. She’s seated on the terrace at the Soho Sky Terrace Tableau on a typical cold rainy London winter morning. When the server arrives, Martin requests an off the -menu egg white omelette -- then casually adds, "You know what? This is how our interview starts….

Dis you expect to have the success that you’ve had in the past year?

Honestly I didn’t expect at all, I know it sounds cliché, but it’s true. I started playing the guitar when I was 9 and later on I began to write some lyrics, it’s shocking how I went from singing in my small room to performing in front of thousands and millions of people all around the world. I am grateful for everything that my family and fans did for me in the past years. If I have to answer your question with all honesty I never, ever in a million years expected to influence the lives of so many people,; I’m saying this because as an artist I’m different, and not many people like different, that’s why my fame was a massive surprise to me.

How did you start your carrier and who would you say helped you to find the right people to trust in the industry?

Well that’s a good question; as a person I’ve always been quite assertive and careful, I’ve never trusted people straight away and I still don’t now at days. I started performing in my local area in different pubs, clubs and then I noticed that people started to like my music , so my luck brought me to meet my current manager; I was performing in a small club in Soho, and after my performance this tall muscular man approaches me and tells me “ I want to sign you a contract”, at first obviously I said no, I didn’t even know the guy, but after a few months he followed me around the different clubs and pubs and brought other people along with him, like “Matthew Healy” from the 1975 and that was one of the best moments of my life, he’s such an inspiration to me and my music. As time passed my team grew with people and I began to trust them more and more and here I am, and it’s all thanks to them, so I would say that I’m very lucky.

You’re only 19 and a worldwide superstar, how do you cope with that?

I’m not going to lie, it is very hard, stressful and sometimes I might feel depressed, but my family is always here to comfort me and support me through the hard times. I try to separate my carrier from my private life, and make time for my family and friends as well for music, but it’s not that easy. My goal was never to be famous or a superstar but to make music and influence people of my age and help them get through hard times. Music also helps me a lot to relax and focus and most importantly my fans love me, so I know that I can count on them as well.

Would you say that your music is influenced by different artists as well as the people you meet and places you have visited?

Definitely, I believe that every artist as some point has been influenced by the music of others, it’s perfectly normal. The biggest influences that I had when writing my music were the 1975, Disclosure and Drake. I know they are all very different and distinctive artists, but it’s true, I listen to a lot of music, different genres and styles, and they are my favourite artists. The biggest thing that influences my music is when I travel and meet new people and the experiences I make and remember; I love to write music when I go to LA, Santa Barbara and Malibu; the atmosphere, the people, the smell, the weather, the sea everything inspires me and influences the style and sound of my music.

Are you planning to collaborate with any artist?

Yes, I’m currently working with Rudimental and the single will come out just before Christmas!

I’m very excited, it’s something completely different, the song has many different sounds and feels, and it’s one of those tracks that makes you forget of the world around you. The song it’s going to be called “Delusional”; it makes me so happy to work with such great artists, it makes me feel grateful. Summer 2017 will be very busy as I will collaborate with Justin Bieber and Skrillex, but I’m not going to give too much away.

What do you do if you're having a bad day on tour?

I always try to find different ways to keep myself together and busy. The worst thing is to go on stage feeling sad or angry. It happens often and I think every artist is affected by it, it’s normal, we’re humans at the end of the day! My favourite thing is to face time my family and my best friends, they always cheer me up and find ways to make me laugh, they are all so supportive; or I would just listen to music, watch a movie and order some of my favourite Wagamamas….

Izzy, your breakup with rapper Childish Gambino, is it a big part of your new album's narrative?

I can’t deny that, it definitely is, we’ve been through a lot of things together, good and bad ones, so it did influence my writing. “Childish” that’s how I used to call him, sounds a bit cliché, because he is literally the definition of a child, I’ve been really influenced by his music and style, so you might hear some of his sounds in my songs; there’s no hatred between us, on the contrary we’re in really good terms so I have a deep respect for him as a person and an artist. That’s not only it , my songs have also been influenced by things that I have experienced , places I’ve visited and by the new people I’ve met along the way.

Did you feel pushed by adults in your life?

Not really, I’ve always made decisions on my own and I’ve never let anyone dictate what I should or shouldn’t have done in my carrier. The only adults which I have listened to are my parents and my manager, this is because they care about me and my music and I know they would only want the best for me, so I trust them. My manager is the best person you could work with, I love having him by my side as he gives me his opinions and helps me to decide what sounds the best.

Do you feel more confident now than when you started?

I used to be very nervous, especially when I began performing at big events and festivals. It’s usually just nerves when you’re scared of sounding bad. People who become famous for signing are usually good at singing. I think being known helps the nerves. Now, when I step out at the MTV Music Awards or on Saturday Night Live, I have fans. Now people want to see me and buy tickets just to enjoy and experience my music for half an hour or less. I hear them scream my name, try to jump on stage, risk their life and are not scared to face the police. I love my fans because they want me to do well and have always been here for me. They are the season I am where I am, they have improved, changed and given self-confidence to Izzy Martin and I respect them for this gift.

When did you figure out how to become better and change?

I knew after my first Coachella this summer looked at the tape and said, “I have to do better. This is my life.” I was not satisfied and I knew I was capable of much better. It was my first U.S. gig, playing the second main stage at dusk. That was a big move and moment for me. This things don’t make me sad, instead they make me happy because I can find different ways to improve and become a better artists; this is not only about me, I need to think about my fans as well, I need to make sure that they are satisfied by my music and in a way I owe it to them because they are the reason that I’m able to experience such things in my life.

How are you going to present the album on tour?

Nowadays, with live music, you’re going against DJs and rappers singing over two tracks that are just amazing. So when you come out as a band, you have to know your sound, you need to bring something different to the music industry so that you can stand out, and make you sure your track is good. Environment is very important to me. Sometimes I have to perform during the day for festivals, and my music does not work in the daytime. It is night-time music. When you come to my show, I want it to feel like an immersive experience, memorable and mind-blowing. The darkness is -important for me it enables me to play music in a unique way and give out a feeling which wouldn’t be the same if performing during the day. My tour will begin this summer, and I’m going to present my new album in April just before the start of summer, so that my fans can get to know my music before experiencing it live.

Who are some songwriters you look up to?

For me, Matthew Healy and Amy Winehouse have to be at least the top five among songwriters. The 1975’s album [I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it] this album is

even better than the studio ones. It’s all passion, strong beliefs and original immersive music -- they were a huge inspiration for the creation of my new album. Amy Winehouse has always had a strong influence in my writing, her lyrics give out so much passion in a way which I can’t even describe, and she was and still is an absolute diva.

How many artists will you feature?

It will probably be 14 amazing works of art. I wanted to keep it to artists that I collect myself or I’m friends with or art from my own collection. Originally it was just going to be about myself and my views of life, but now it’s also experiences, so I’m trying to make them as interesting as possible. For instance, one is inspired by when I went to Cuba, where I met one of my best friends. Another is about a boat trip with my family in Malibu, and another is staying at Kehlani’s house for a week. Different artists are going to feature in my album, like Party Next Door , Kehlani, Justin Bieber and J Cole; I believe that they bring a unique sound to my music and they definitely bring an interesting sound to my album which I know will definitely stand out and be recognized by others
