  • 2. Contents of this power point
    • Explore the beginnings of the Rolling Stone
    • Discuss its success
    • Annotate a front cover from the magazine
    • Explain what I have learn from my research .
  • 3. History
    • Founded in 1967
    • San Francisco American
    • Jan Wenner (Who still edits and publishes) and Ralph J.Gleason
  • 4. Format of the magazine
    • Produced every 2 weeks
    • Focuses on popular culture and politics as well as music
  • 5. Rolling stone is
    • not just about the music, but about the things and attitudes that music embraces
    • Jan Wenner.
  • 6. covers from the past Appearing on the front of the Rolling Stone is many musicians dream , having featured many of the biggest names in the world throughout its decades of success .
  • 7. Front cover analysis
    • I set out to find a rather generic cover of rolling stone , although there have been many special editions in which the style of the cover changes , I feel it was important to explore the generic features of music magazines , more importantly the classic features of Rolling Stone that make it unique to other available magazines .
  • 8. Why I chose the cover
    • Britney Spears Is a classic icon of the 90s/early 2000s and debatably one of the greatest pop stars of all time .
    • Wanting to break away from her early Disney career the magazine cover is provocative whilst still maintaining the pop princess legacy which remains today .

  • 10. Logo . The Rolling stone has always had the same logo , the curled font links back to its 1960s roots , whilst its bold and clear style makes it look still somewhat fashionable . The success of the magazine , has led for the logo to be easily recognisable (much like that of other large companies , e.g. mc Donald's) thus making it stand out amongst the many different music magazines available . Its continued use makes the logo iconic . , Colour of Logo. Although the style of the classic magazine logo remains the same , for this particular front cover the colour of the logo has been changed . In its normal form the rolling stone logo is red , making it easily stand out as well as being a colour attracting both genders . To go with the pink background and general bubble gum pop theme , the logo colour has been changed to lilac. The grey tones in this shade of lilac make it a bit more appealing to males , regardless of it being a colour often associated with females . The bold use of colour is also vital to make it clear which magazine the customer is purchasing .
  • 11. Annotation of the image . Background colour . Stereotypically a young and girly colour , the use of pink sets the general theme for the image , pop music has a mainly female audience thus the use of such a colour will attract them to the magazine . Subject of Image He pink satin background portrays the idea of Britney being on a bed . The clothing in the photo is provocative (underwear) , linking this to the idea of the bed , the photo has strong connotations of sex , this helps draw in a male audience for the magazine . Lighting and airbrushing Specific lighting has been used to highlight parts of her body , adding emphasis to them to draw attention , we can see this around the bus , stomach and legs . Airbrushing has also been used to add shading and draw away from faults in her skin tone , giving the illusion of the perfect body . Males will buy the magazine as she is stereotypically good looking , and females will buy it as they aspire to be like her .
  • 12. Layout Logo The logo (name) of the magazine is placed clearly at the top of the page , this makes it easy to see which magazine it is , meaning people may buy it based solely on its reputation . Sub Headings We can see a various amount of articles within the edition , mentioned on the front cover , the subjects are varied (history , music and politics) , drawing in people of a range of different interests . The subheadings are placed around the image of Britney as not to draw away from it , but still in a clear white font to make them readable , a larger font is used to draw attention to the subject , and a less bold slightly smaller font to give a brief explanation of the point .
  • 13. What I learnt from this magazine cover
    • It is important that the magazine appeals to a male and female audience to attract a larger group of readers
    • Use of bold colours as well as the theme of the photo can be used to portray a subject in a certain way .
  • 14. Thank You for Listening !
