News fromThe Hermitage

Dear FriendsWe are now looking forward tocelebrating the harvest, whenwe give thanks to God for allhe has given us, and sharewhat we have with others. Weshould always do this, but thistime of the year it has aspecial emphasis. The churchcouncil always have toconsider the cost of much inchurch life, but we arecurrently considering how were think our attitudes togiving. This is a good time todo it, and this year our harvestfestival will also be our “PledgeSunday,” when we considerhow we give to God in orderfor him to develop his ministryhere. What is he asking of us?

All of life, including thehandling of money, is to belived before God. The sacred,or the “holy” as we might say,is expressed in spiritual orrelational dimensions of life, asthe incarnation, the word

becoming flesh, God himself ina tiny vulnerable way, part ofhis own creation, makes clear.

We can all fall into the trap ofseparating church finances inparticular from spiritualthinking as if they were in asealed unit. A secular, fundraising view is built on theidea that people really do notwant to give, but they will ifthey feel they might getsomething, as in a raffle prize,or a church fayre. When we dothis, we do not feel any realcost of giving, or contributing.By doing so, we often avoidgiving of ourselves.

It can seem almost offensiveto mention the character andnature of God in the sameparagraph as fundraising butwe need to do it to see thecontrast between our idea ofgiving and God’s self givingand sacrificial love. As we re-think our attitudes to giving,we need to be absorbed bygenerosity. The way we giveneeds to be a response toGod's generosity, andmodelled on, or a reflection of,his generosity to us. This is

Page 5: MAGAZINE OF THE ANGLICAN CHURCH OF ST ANDREW …€¦ · fundraising view is built on the idea that people really do not want to give, but they will if they feel they might get something,

summed up in the prayer weuse at the beginning of eachEucharist, we are, after all, only giving back to God whatis his in the first place, whathe has given us.

This Harvest, if we want tosee healthy church finances,we begin with a healthyrelationship with God andencourage others to do thesame, the answer is to drawcloser to God and realise justhow much He has given forus and we, out of deepthankfulness, want to giveback in turn. May we reflectthe generosity of God in ourown personal lives and in ourchurch that through that, others also might see and bedrawn in to share in that selfgiving love.

Every blessing,

Wendy

My chosen extract from this week's Church TimesMonday 28 August 2017

Greenbelt takes inclusivenessto another level with disabilitycommunion service

by Paul Handley

On Sunday, the Greenbelt festivaltaught the wider Church a valuablelesson in inclusiveness.Approaches to disability usually start and stop at the level ofaccessibility. For its main communion service, the festival broughtthis inclusiveness into the centre of the eucharist. The service was led by three cantors, all wheelchair users; part ofthe music was provided by Rhythmicity, a drumming group thatincludes people with additional needs; Livability, a Greenbeltpartner, provided three signers; and the prayers were led by twopeople from L’Arche, the charity for people with learningdifficulties.More impressive even than this, there were audio links to peopleunable to get to the festival, including Tanya Marlow, who suffersfrom ME. She introduced herself before giving a reading fromEphesians: “I do have a body, but it’s in a bed in Plymouth.”Becky Tyler, a young woman with cerebral palsy, was present onthe stage in her pink high-tech wheelchair. She had recorded herhomily on her voice-producing computer - “like Stephen Hawking, but I think mine is much nicer”.She spoke of the frustrations of her life, if defined by the manythings she is unable to do. “I used to feel that God didn’t love meas much as other people. I didn’t see anyone in a wheelchair inthe Bible, and nearly everyone who was disabled got healed.”But then her mother read Daniel 7.9, to her, describing the throne

Page 12: MAGAZINE OF THE ANGLICAN CHURCH OF ST ANDREW …€¦ · fundraising view is built on the idea that people really do not want to give, but they will if they feel they might get something,

of the Ancient of Days: “its wheels were all ablaze - yey! So now Iknow that God loves me a lot.”The Gospel for the eucharist was the feeding of the 5000. MsTyler said she often identified with the little boy in the story.“Sometimes I feel I cannot give much to Jesus, but I’m grateful forall the things that I can do.”Although billed as a homily, Ms Tyler’s address contained morepersonal experience and sounder theology than many sermons. If all this sounds earnest, it wasn’t. The music, once againprovided by Fischy Music, was cheerful, and there was muchhumour. The distribution of the bread and wine, all done withinimpromptu groups of 15-20 people, meant that everyone present, including the many children, played a part. The Gospel was notread: instead each group was invited to tell the story of the feedingof the 5000 with the help of pictorial flash cards.A proportion of the collection will be used to increasingaccessibility at the next festival, not least by helping to subsidisetickets for the less able to pay. And, as a sign of Greenbelt’simproved finances (or its faith), ten per cent of the collection will gointo Trust Greenbelt for distribution to deserving causes in the fieldof faith and the arts.

Friends of St Andrew's

A letter from Pat Etherington

Hello Everyone,It seems a long time since I last wrote to you so I hope you've allhad a good summer. Our's here has been rather on the warmside to say the very least, some say we had the hottest July for33 years!Rev'd Michael Graham took the services on both the 2nd and 9thof July as Rev'd Wendy was away. The services were both verywell attended despite the fact that quite a number of people wereaway on holiday. We have had quite a lot of visitors attendingservices and it's lovely when the come down into the hall forcoffee afterwards and have a chat.I went to the UK myself on the 16th July to catch up with family(son David and assorted grand-children) and friends and also toattend the AGM of the Association of Friends of the Diocese ofCyprus and the Gulf. This was held on the 31st July and as itwas billed for a morning start I travelled to London on the Sundayand stayed at The Royal Foundation of St Katharine not far fromthe City and Canary Wharf. I joined Anne Lloyd, John and JennyWorton-Griffith and Bishop Clive Handford and his wife Jean. The AGM was held at All Hallows by the Tower, the oldest churchin the City of London AD 675. I'm sure it is much better known tomany of you than it is to me as this was only my second visit. The AGM went well and Bishop Michael gave his review on thestate of the Diocese and John Worton-Griffith was thanked for allhis work as Chair of the Association for the past 8 years but was

now standing down. This was followed by a CelebrationEucharist where the sermon was given by Bishop Clive, whowas the Diocese fourth Bishop. It was altogether a lovelyoccasion. After the service it was a surprise to discover thatmany of the people who had been on Pilgrimage with us earlierin the year were present. The Pilgrimage had been led byBishop Michael and it was lovely to have lunch together andenjoy a great natter. It made a good day event better!I think that is about all I have to tell you and I will have arrivedback in Cyprus by the time you will be reading this and I will becatching up on the local news in readiness for next month'smagazine.Love to all

SPECIAL DAYS THISMONTH

The Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, is celebratedon 14th September. It recalls three events:

* the finding of the True Cross by Saint Helena, the mother of theemperor Constantine during a pilgrimage she made to Jerusalem;* The Church of the Holy Sepulchre was then built at the site of thediscovery. The date of the feast marks the dedication of the Churchnine years later, in 335. A portion of the cross was venerated there;* and the restoration of the True Cross to Jerusalem in AD 629 bythe emperor Heraclius after it had fallen into the hands of Chosroas,King of the Persians in AD 614 who took it from Jerusalem whenthey destroyed the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Although theauthenticity of alleged relics of the cross may be questionable, HolyCross Day provides an opportunity for a joyous celebration ofChrist's redeeming death on a cross.

The Feast of St Matthew, is celebrated on 14th September.Matthew was a Jew who worked for the occupying Roman forces, collecting taxes from other Jews. The Romans were not scrupulousabout what the “tax farmers” got for themselves, hence the latter, known as “publicans,” were generally hated as traitors by theirfellow Jews. So it was shocking to them to hear Jesus call such aman to be one of his intimate followers.Matthew got Jesus in further trouble by having a dinner at his house. The Gospel tells us that many tax collectors and “those known assinners” came to the dinner. The Pharisees were badly shocked. What business did the supposedly great teacher have associatingwith such immoral people? Jesus’ answer was, “Those who are welldo not need a physician, but the sick do. Go and learn the meaningof the words, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ I did not come to callthe righteous but sinners” (Matthew 9:12b-13).St Matthew is known to us principally as an Evangelist. He was the

Page 17: MAGAZINE OF THE ANGLICAN CHURCH OF ST ANDREW …€¦ · fundraising view is built on the idea that people really do not want to give, but they will if they feel they might get something,

first to put down in writing our Lord's teachingand the account of His life. His Gospel waswritten in Aramaic, the language that our LordHimself spoke and was written to convince theJews that their anticipated Messiah had comein the person of Jesus. No other particular incidents about Mattheware found in the New Testament. According totradition, he preached in Egypt and Ethiopia and further places East. Some legends say he lived until his nineties, dying a peaceful death, others say he died a martyr's death.Matthew is the patron saint of tax collectors and accountants.

The Feast of St Michael and all Angels, is celebrated on 29thSeptember. Michael is an archangel in Judaism, Christianity, andIslam. He is considered a champion of justice, a healer of the sick, andthe guardian of the Church.

St Michael has four main responsibilities or offices, as we know fromscripture and Christian tradition; the first is to combat Satan; the secondis to escort the faithful to heaven at their hour of death; the third is to bea champion of all Christians, and the Church itself; and the fourth is tocall men from life on Earth to their heavenly judgment.

In Daniel, St Michael is mentioned twice. The first time (Daniel 10:13 )as one who helped Daniel, and the second time (Daniel 12:1) he ismentioned with regard to the end times of the world when he will standfor the "children of thy people." His nextmention comes in the Epistle of St Jude(Jude 1:9), where St Michael is said toguard the tombs of Moses and Eve andhas contended with Satan over the bodyof Moses. The final mention is inRevelation (Revelation 12:7-9), whereSt Michael and his angels, do battle withthe dragon.

USED STAMPSSt Andrew's collects used postage stamps which the charity EMBRACE theMiddle East sells to raise funds for the Helen Keller Centre for the Blind inJerusalem, one of the many organisations they support throughout the MiddleEast.Special commemorative stamps are particularly desirable, as they receivemany regular 1st & 2nd class stamps. If you have suitable stamps, pleasetrim them and bring them to church. Post them in the box just inside theentrance door. They will be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

USED CARDSCan you help our ladies who enjoy recycling greetings cards to raise funds forSt Andrew's by donating your used cards to them. If you are visiting theTRNC and have room in your suitcase do bring them to the church.

Jeremy Moodey, departing Chief Executive of EMBRACE looksback on his seven years at the charity, and reflects on theongoing journey towards a just peace in Israel and Palestine. When will we see peace with justice? As I look back at the last seven years, I feel a great sense ofthankfulness and pride at what Embrace has achieved. Changingour name from BibleLands to Embrace in 2012 was a transform-ational step that has enabled the charity to engage with manynew supporters and to reverse the long-term decline of previousyears. Then, last year, we launched our exciting new strategytowards 2020, entitled Faith in Action.During my time here, we have grown in size, established newpartnerships with Christian organisations in the Middle East andevolved our approach to grant-making, to ensure we use yourgenerous donations in the most focused and professional way.We have changed our approach to some older activities, including transferring our Helen Keller School in East Jerusaleminto the care and ownership of the local church. There has

Page 22: MAGAZINE OF THE ANGLICAN CHURCH OF ST ANDREW …€¦ · fundraising view is built on the idea that people really do not want to give, but they will if they feel they might get something,

certainly never been a dull moment! And we could not haveachieved any of this without the faithful prayer and sacrificialgiving of you, our loyal supporters. But as I give thanks for theseachievements and think of the thousands of people whose liveshave been transformed, I also reflect on the difficult context inwhich our partners work, especially the lack of meaningfulprogress towards a just peace in Israel and Palestine.I arrived as CEO in 2009, only a few months after the end of‘Operation Cast Lead’, Israel’s war in Gaza, in which over onethousand Palestinian civilians – many of them children – werekilled. BibleLands (as it then was) had launched an appeal forPalestinian Christian work in Gaza, and the heartfelt generosity ofour supporters raised over £125,000 in a matter of weeks. Therewere to be two more brutal wars in Gaza, in 2012 and 2014, withthousands more Palestinians killed, and yet our supporterscontinued to respond sacrificially to the need.Today Gaza has a population of some two million, effectivelyimprisoned in a strip of land smaller than the Isle of Wight or theIsle of Arran. The humanitarian crisis is such that the UN hasdeclared the territory will literally be unliveable within a few years. Many think Gaza is unliveable now. Yet Gaza and its Islamistregime under Hamas must not be seen in isolation. They aresymptoms of a wider malaise – the inability or refusal of Israelisand Palestinians to agree to share the land fairly, in peace.Peace with justice has always been elusive. In 2010, sometentative peace talks took place between Israel and thePalestinians, and these were revived under the so-called ‘KerryPeace Initiative’ in 2013-14. But the talks achieved nothing.Instead, the focus was on ‘facts on the ground’: Israel’s continuedmilitary occupation of Palestinian territory in East Jerusalem andthe West Bank, the ongoing blockade of Gaza, the expansion ofIsrael’s separation barrier, outbreaks of violence (especially knifeattacks on Israeli Jews and the killing of hundreds of Palestiniansby the Israeli security forces). And of course the Israelisettlements. During my time at Embrace, an estimated 200,000

Page 23: MAGAZINE OF THE ANGLICAN CHURCH OF ST ANDREW …€¦ · fundraising view is built on the idea that people really do not want to give, but they will if they feel they might get something,

Israeli settlers have established their homes on confiscatedPalestinian land in East Jerusalem and the West Bank. The settlers, now numbering as many as three quarters of a million, are perhaps the biggest obstacle to peace. No wonder BarackObama lambasted the settlements in almost his last pronounce-ment as US President. And that is why the Anglo-Israeli historianProfessor Avi Shlaim once remarked of Israeli prime ministerNetanyahu: ‘He is like a man who pretends to negotiate the divisionof a pizza while continuing to gobble it up’.President Donald Trump is clearly much more sympathetic to theIsraeli position, and has even begun to distance his administrationfrom the much-vaunted ‘two-state solution’, without offering anyalternative blue-print for peace. But the world is slowly waking up tothe continued injustice in Israel and Palestine. The injustice thatleads to much of the need we seek to address through ourPalestinian Christian partners; projects such as the rehabilitationservices that East Jerusalem YMCA provides to Palestinianchildren who have been brutalised and traumatised by militarydetention. This year, 2017, marks some significant and momentousanniversaries: 100 years since the Balfour Declaration, whichcreated a pretext for a Jewish state in historic Palestine; 70 yearssince the ill-fated UN Partition Plan for Palestine; 50 years since theSix Day War and the start of Israel’s occupation; and ten yearssince the start of Israel’s blockade of Gaza. Are we going to let these anniversaries pass? Or will 2017 be theyear when finally the international community stops wringing itshands at the absence of peace with justice in Israel and Palestine, and actually does something positive and creative to secure thatpeace? I know that Embrace the Middle East will continue to be atthe forefront of the movement for a just peace, and my prayer evenas I step down as CEO is that one day soon it might bear fruit.Psalm 122 enjoins us to pray for the peace of Jerusalem, and thatmeans praying and working for all its peoples, whatever theirreligion or background. That is exactly what Embrace does.

Here at St Andrew’s we are working hard to be a church community that livesout its appreciation of, and awareness of, the goodness, generosity and thegreatness of God. All forms of service, including our financial giving, areencouraged and developed on the basis of a response to God’s call to us.

Our giving should be a prayerful and spiritual expression of all this, like giving agift to a loved one. When we give we are not paying our dues, but engaging inan act of thanksgiving. Over the past few years we have seen the widercommunity join with us in giving to those who are needy throughout the world aswell as locally. Of course we need financial contributions in order to sustain allthat we do. Anything you feel able to give, however small, will be deeplyappreciated and understood as encouragement to us to build this work here.

We are now a UK registered charity and we would ask those of you who believein and support our ministry to change the way you give, and channel it throughour charity. Regular giving no matter how small by standing order doesfacilitate forward planning and budgeting.
