I would like start by saying what an excellent job Callum, our new editor, made of his first edition of Flat Out, I especially liked the full colour cover, but as I took the photograph maybe I’m a little biased. Seriously though I have only heard favourable comments from the members that I have met. The new season seems to be going very well, with lots of activities being reported. Stoneleigh saw a good turn out for the Citroen Specials Club around 61 cars counted into the club area on Sunday. Not our usual location, some members taking quite a long time to find us, Ken Carlton has the record driving around the showground for an hour before spotting us. John Simcock organised the ‘Marches on Wheels’ event for the club, unfortunately it took place on the Sunday 27th May and the weather was rather unkind with heavy rain for most of the time. John attracted 27 entrants 12 actually participating despite the weather. I would like to thank John and his team and hope that they will do it all again next year. As I write this at the beginning of June, 24 participants have returned their booking/registration forms to me for the CSC Ireland Expedition, so all the efforts made by Keith Bomber and Ray Lloyd over there in Northern Ireland seem to have been worthwhile and we are looking forward to an enjoyable and fun packed event. Bill and Mary Johnson, Carole and I are spending part of our summer holidays at the site chosen for our 2008 20th Anniversary Celebrations in Belgium, We hope to sort out all those little things that

are not so easily done on the telephone or using e-mails and are hoping to come back having planned the itinerary. I shall let everyone who has already registered an interest in participating know how things are developing and hopefully will also have some details in the next issue of Flat Out. In a moment of weakness I purchased a ‘Bull Horn’ for Scallywag and fitted it in time for our visit to Stoneleigh, imagine my surprise when I gave it a try and immediately received a reply. Since we were at the National Agriculture Showground I thought at first that Scallywag had made a date with an amorous cow. But it turned out to be Gordon Burch’s car that has been fitted with a similar melodious device, maybe this will catch on and we will have a CSC herd. Hope to see you at the summer camp at Bakewell, drive carefully. Alan

RUNNING BOARD RALLY The Running Board Rally over the weekend of July 20 - 22 is once again at Swiss Farm on the Marlow Road out of Henley. An excellent site with a swimming pool, near the river, and not too far (walkable) from the town centre where there are all sorts of shops and eating houses. There is a reasonable fee for camping over the whole weekend and the camping facilities are very good. Arrive Friday afternoon/evening, pick up your music quiz sheets, we usually eat that evening at the Weatherspoons in Henley. Saturday is the Treasure Hunt and driving games which continue over into Sunday morning. Weatherspoons or a Barbeque on Saturday evening. Sunday afternoon is the concours events and prize-giving when everyone from the different clubs attending sit down with a drink and biscuit to applaud the competition winners and hopefully win a prize in the raffle or lottery number game. Time to pack up and another trip into Henley and Weatherspoons ready for the trip home. If you would like to attend please contact Carole Chitty for an Entry Form.

Hello and welcome to another ‘Flat Out’ which hopefully should arrive on your doorstep before the start of July and hopefully even before this years summer camp at Bakewell. In this issue, we’ve got another ‘Car’s the Star’ care of Max Hyde, who is building the most unusual single-seater. I’m look-ing forward to seeing it finished although I suspect he will definitely need an SVA for this one! If anyone else is building something a little ‘different’, please get in touch and your creation can feature in a forthcoming issue. It’s been a busy couple of months what with the Stoneleigh show and various oth-er events. Stoneleigh was well attended both days despite the weather forecast with approx 60 cars there on the Sunday afternoon. It also was nice to see so many pembletons, specials and blackjacks in attendance. I didn’t really get a chance to visit the other club stands or the major exhibitors due to answering questions about the Burton. Next time, I’ll hide the car for a few hours and slope off to see the attractions! Despite the rain on the way home, and someone try-ing to run me off the road outside Coven-try, I managed the 1,100 mile round trip without incident, and had a great week-end. Thanks to new member Mike for the tea and the chance to see another Burton ‘in the flesh’. A new date for your diary, if you live ‘oop North’, is the Scottish Kit Car Show, to be held on Sunday 12th August at Knockhill circuit in the Kingdom of Fife. This is a fledgling event being supported by some of the major manufactures in the UK. If you’re free that day, it should be well worth a trip.

Following on from the success of in-stalling my oil temperature gauge, I de-cided to investigate the contents of a few spare gearboxes. To cut a long story short, I now have a ‘long legged’ gearbox waiting to go into the Burton. This only came about after many hours of frustra-tion and machining bits to make them fit. I’m sure my little girls overheard some new words during that exercise! Watch out for me passing you at 70 mph...in third! I’m looking forward to the Ireland trip now that I’ve finally got around to book-ing the ferry. As I won’t have a navigator for the outbound journey, I’m hoping that a group of us can meet up en-route and travel together. I’m not sure where I’m going to stay yet, but in true Irish style, I’ll sort it out when I get there. Thanks to all of the members who provid-ed input for this issue, especially to John for some very fine cartoons which you’ll be seeing over the next few months. I promise I won’t badger the same people every issue. Finally, the good weather is here, so I’ve put away the roof for the summer and I’m looking forwards to some real open-top motoring.

Diary July 1st: Six Ashes Rally, off Bridgnorth-Stourbridge road. Just turn up. July 15th: Wem Classic Car Show. Just turn up. Friday July 20th to Sunday July 22nd: North Wales weekend, Phone Bob, 01939 290216. July 29th: Black Country Museum.Must book for this event. Contact Cliff Thomas-Smout. August 19th; Lupin Farm, Kings Bromley. Just turn up. Contact Cliff. Midland members meet at The Vine, Kinver, third Wednesday of the month. Contact Cliff.

I had a good journey up to Harrogate for the AGM, and a very good gathering it was, the hotel very good, as was the Saturday run, through the Yorkshire countryside quite a lot like our own Welsh Border country. Looking forward to the 2008 meeting. Four of us club members from this area went to the Stoneleigh Kit Car Show on May 6th. There are so many people to see and swap stories with that I think the only way to do Stoneleigh is to go for the whole weekend. Even then there would be people you missed. There must have been around 100 cars there on the Sunday - if you missed it put it down for next year. On May 20th Jim Blackhurst and I went to the Rochdale owners Club show at Capesthorne Hall near Macclesfield, meeting up with old friend Ray John, now much better in health, I am pleased to say. A good showing of club members and the sun shone all day. Sunday May 27th saw John and Joan Simcock's "Marches on Wheels." What a day. The weather was dreadful, rain and rain again, as can be seen from their own report. But despite that it was a very

successful "navigation scatter rally" which everyone seemed to have enjoyed. When you read this we will have had the summer camp at Bakewell, and our other June events. Friday July 20th: Bob's annual weekend in Wales. This year we are again going to Tywyn via the small town of Aberdovey. I have booked the site but need to know who intends to come as the site owner usually gives us a private corner. All sites have electric hook-ups. £15 per night. On the work front, although I have built the door for the drive side of the yellow car and made up the frame, I will put off fitting it until next autumn. Also I have just been given the whole power unit from a 1983 2CV - including alternator, starter motor, carb. I'm in the middle of stripping it down, and it never ceases to amaze me how well the engines, gearboxes and running gear have been made. If you look after them they should last for ever. Bob Lloyd

Hi Folks, Well the British Weather has struck again, glorious April, wet May, water proofing tested to the limit. If I hear “the ground needs it” once more I shall scream, can’t the water authorities find a different supply route? Stoneleigh was well supported by the Midlands and the rest of the country as well, thank you. It was nice to see friends meeting up and chatting, as well as one or two unusual machines. The bits and pieces stands seemed busy so perhaps there is kit-building going on but with other marques. At the moment I am evicting the moths from the tent pack in preparation for Summer Camp, so hope to see you all soon. Our usual Wednesday meetings at the Vine Inn, Kinver are continuing throughout the Summer, sitting outside in the sunshine or inside in the rain. Regards

EAST MIDLANDS (MID SHIRES) Report Mid Shires Events 2007 June 5th Evening meeting at The Bell, husbands Bosworth June 9 Lincolnshire Bubble Care Weekend, Sleaford June 22/24 Summer Camp, Derbyshire. July 3rd Monthly meeting. Check venue with Jim July 8th Hollowell Steam Fair, Northamptonshire July 21/22 Running Board Rally Henley on Thames Aug 25th Holcot Steam Fair, Northamptonshire Aug 26th Little Gransden, Cambridgeshire. More to follow next flat out. Jim & Joy Barry

The famous five of the mid shires became the secret seven on the 22nd April, when seven specials all met up at the Little Chef on the A46 near Coventry en-route for Leamington Spa. On this occasion we were joined by new members Chas and Jacqui from Hollowell. This was one of our first trips out in our specials in 2007. We all enjoyed the glorious warm spell by having a lazy stroll through the beautiful gardens at Leamington Spa. Later, after we had a look round the museum, we headed off for a spot of lunch. Our trip to Coventry on the 13th May was a little damp, to say the least, so seven of us squeezed ourselves into our tin tops and headed off to the Coventry Transport Museum. We were disappointed in a way because we were supposed to be parking our specials in front of the museum, which would have looked quite impressive. Unfortunately David and Lynda were unable to join us. Jim and I did not get to The Rushden Cavalcade this year, but we did manage

to get to Belvoir Castle. After a week of rain, we decided to head off for the Belvoir Valley for the Steam Rally and Fair. Armed with the SAT NAV we set off on the quiet country route. The day was very enjoyable and although we did not get to look around the impressive Castle, which sits up on a hill overlooking the large and very well set out Steam Fair. We have it in mind to make this a group event next year, possibly for a camping weekend. There is plenty to see around the stalls, two good beer tents and loads of food outlays to satisfy all tastes. On top of this the organisers run a bus to and from the show ground to the castle for anyone wishing to look around the Castle. The fee is normally £11 each, but for this weekend the cost is £11 for two, if you are exhibiting, which is very good value for this impressive home. Our next event will be the weekend visit to the Bubble Car museum in Sleaford, Lincolnshire followed by the summer camp in Derbyshire

Carburettor and jets Before diving into our carburettor to change jets remember that Paramount in the designer's mind is reliability we never change anything in the carb that reduces reliability changing anything is always a compromise between power and economy By itself a the carburettor does nothing attach it to our engines and it comes to life providing the very lifeblood that all engines exist on air and fuel Air. Air in the combustion process contains 21 % oxygen 78 % nitrogen on one % of other gases Fuel Petrol that we used in our engines contains liquid hybrocardons Air fuel mixture A chemist will tell you that the perfect mixture that will be totally consumed in the combustion process, contains 1 pound of fuel for each 14.80 pounds of air, he's right but we cannot use this perfect mixture because it produces too much heat Richer mixtures lower combustion temperature and produce an increase of power until we reach 13.8 air fuel ratio, from 13.8 to 12.5 there is no increase in power but we do see lower temperature that increases the combustion process allowing more time to convert heat into mechanical energy leaner mixtures will only be tolerated at motorway speeds but you may see a hole where the top of the piston used to be Air pressure At 59 degrees Fahrenheit air pressure at sea level is 14.69 pounds per square inch ( psi ) while the engine is stationary the air pressure throughout the engine carburettor and exhaust is 14.69 psi As the piston begins its downward travel a low pressure area is created in the cylinder the outside pressure being 14.69 rushes through the carb venture to replace the vacuum The venture Basic law of physics states as the velocity of air increases the pressure of their air decreases in a given period of time, the amount of air exiting the carburettor must be equal to the amount entering, on its way through the venture the airflow encounters a restriction and has to speedup to exit at the same rate that it entered, how does it speed up the only available source by air pressure At a point in that the venture where the air pressure at its lowest we place our fuel outlet with a low pressure in the fuel outlet and high pressure in the fuel chamber We now have their means by which to control the fuel for any given amount of air passing through the overture

Fuel level Before altering jets it is much more important to get the fuel level correct at the proper height the fuel is easily picked off by the suction that exists in the venture to high level will allow more fuel resulting in a rich air fuel mixture too low and you will have a lean mixture remember it's all to do with air pressure Thermal efficiency Of the heat produced by combustion only 25-30 %is available for energy 15 to 20 % is dissipated through are cooling fins 5-10 % is absorbed by the lubricating oil whilst 40-45 per cent disappears down the exhaust pipe it is therefore important to get the balance right if we exceed the limits imposed by the engine design we overheat or overstretch the engine eventually losing what we thought we had gained . Amazing what you can find in books.!!!!!!!- Dicky Dawes 742J

Mendip Flyer (see cover picture) My car is officially registered as a ‘Mendip Special’, Colour White, Reg No. D745 MCV. Donor was a 2CV6 Special. The build was to have been a CCS Somerset, and the project was started with help from Dicky Dawes, who introduced me to the Club. Unfortunately, Dicky's arthritis became the better of him, so the project continued as a self build, supported by a cast of many. The final body design and build was a joint effort between me and Will Collis of Holcombe Engineering, Will, as a vintage car renovator, carrying out most (all?) of that work. I swept up after him! Dicky's Somerset was certainly the original inspiration. When the car was finally inspected by DVLA, they were adamant that it was not referred to as Citroen, and as it was built on the Mendips, a legend was born. Well not quite, but it is referred to in the village as the 'Flyer', hopefully without too much sarcasm.

Pulling Power After seeing adverts for magnetic pads to attach to your oil filter/auto gearbox sump pans etc, in an attempt to contain the wanderings of bits of metal in your engine or gearbox for “How much is that”” price, my grey matter sprang into action Got any old speakers? Any sort—car, tannoy, record player etc? Rip them apart and inside is a STRONG magnet. Various sizes are available which can be placed onto the oil filter, automatic gearbox sump pan (if you have an auto tin top?) Comments please…

2008 ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

The 20-year Anniversary Celebrations will take place in the Ardennes area of Belgium centred at the Petite Suisse Campsite near Douchamps, from Friday 20th June to Friday 27th June 2008. Put these dates in your diary now you won’t want to miss this one.

This site has all the facilities that we need. It is situated on the side of a valley with beautiful views. The campsite staff have been very helpful and are looking forward to meeting us all. The management have offered us very good discounts and are keen to help us in any way that they can.

This is a very picturesque area and we will be planning some lovely days out. There will be a banquet in the local hotel just 500 yards from the campsite and we are also planning a lavish BBQ. For anyone who has yet to venture onto the continent with their special this is the ideal first event. The Campsite is very easily accessible being only 158 miles from Ostend, 185 miles from Dunkirk and 210 miles from Calais and the Chan-nel Tunnel for those who don’t like ferries. We do not yet know when we will have to book the accommodation and place our deposits, it may be sooner than we might expect. If you have not already let me know of your intention to take part please do so now. I will then keep you informed as things develop, and you will be able to place your booking via me at the earliest opportunity. Alan Peacock – Chairman Citroen specials Club. The Show season has started in earnest, the recent Cheshire Kit Car Show at Capesthorne Hall was very well attended with around 25 Three wheelers - Lomax – DRK – Grinnall – JZR - Two homebuilt specials and a 4 wheel Le Paton. Malcolm was the lone representative at the Chipping Steam Rally – caravanning opposite a Morgan Three wheeler - Malcolm being called the young pretender. The car qualifies – but not Malcolm. Several other shows including the summer camp will have gone by the time this is published – hopefully we will meet members and new members as we attend. We are trying to pressure anyone we meet to join the club, so we can expand the Membership in the North West. The next monthly meetings are the 14th July and 11th August from 1.30 at the HINDS HEAD – on the B5250 at WRIGHTINGTON close to the M6 Junction 27. Cotswold Chat It’s been quite a busy time lately with the 3 wheelers. Since the AGM (it seems so long ago now) we’ve had the Classic Car show at Malvern, Stoneleigh and Marches on Wheels and it’s only the end of May. The weather was kind at Malvern and those of us who went can’t have been too bad because we managed to get a new club member who joined at Stoneleigh and then won the Nick Francois Trophy before the end of the day!!!!! Well done David and Nicki your Pembleton is superb. It was nice to catch up with so many people there even if the weather wasn’t very good. We missed our old ‘mate’ Neil Haslam but he’s obviously been training his Dad up as we got plenty of earache from him! Marches on Wheels was another story as far as the weather was concerned – typical ban holiday- 24 hours solid rain from Saturday evening. Some very hardy types braved the weather but our Cotswold contingent retired to the pub/motorhomes for the day although we did go for a drive on Monday morning to Ironbridge Gorge. Our site for the weekend was on the edge of a 50 acre cornfield and no electric within half a mile. However this didn’t stop one poor devil plugging their electric toaster in and when on the point of throwing it in the bin because the bread wouldn’t stay down suddenly realised they weren’t connected to the mains!!!!!! Senior moment or what? June will be fairly busy with Defford on the 9th and the Summer Camp at Bakewell 22nd-24th. July 13th – 15th is the new date for our area’s camping weekend – everyone welcome – come for the drive around the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley on the Saturday if you can’t face a couple of nights under canvas! Run starts at 10.45 a.m. prompt approx 70 to 80 miles with a refreshment stop for cream teas. We would appreciate a call if you are interested in joining us. That’s all for now. COAST TO COAST AMERICA (Part 4)

Day 15 Ouray to Mesa Verde National Park Over the Rockies today but a short run so time for sightseeing on the way. Stopped off at Silverton a real old railway town for Leo to look at the old trains (again !). Then on to Mesa Verde park which was an Indian reserve. Here there are historic archaeological sites including cave dwellings, magnificent views & an interesting museum. Almost too much to absorb in a short time . Our lodgings were great, in the middle of nowhere surrounded by view for a 100 miles, very peaceful & quiet. Luckily the restaurant was excellent & not too far to walk to. Day 16 Mesa Verde to Flagstaff Up very early to be greeted by a deer outside the window, not at all shy it posed quite happily for photos. Our eary start was thwarted by unhelpful staff when checking out which was a shame as we had a lot of miles to do. On route we detoured to Four Corners the only place in the USA where 4 states meet. We missed out on Monument Valley as the heat was building going into Arizona with tarmac that was melting !.Our car was fine but Bill started to have a few minor problems with overheating. We had a few problems finding our Travelodge for the night, we were tired & hot & getting a bit irritable. Never mind , 2 nights here with a chance to go & visit the Grand Canyon situated on the famous Route 66 Whilst travelling we saw our first prairie dog & a small dust twister. The clocks have gone back another hour so we are now 8 hrs behind the UK, thats if I can ever get a signal on my phone ! Pat Dawes

We ran Marches on Wheels on the Sunday of Bank Holiday weekend, which as everyone in the country will no doubt remembers, was a filthy wet - and cold - day after a fortnight of beautiful weather. Were we being got at by someone in very high authority? Nevertheless the event seemed to be rated a success, enthusiastically received with cries of "more" from those among the dripping wet masochists who could stop their teeth chattering enough to speak. Almost all the 27 entrants turned up although a few opted to stay within the "most hospitable) walls of the Down Inn, near Bridgnorth. Not all were club members, Marches being open to all on three wheels plus four-wheelers with Citroen enghines and a number had picked up the information through the Welsh National Rally for motorcycles. The format was that you chose your own route to gather specified information from any 12 of the 24 checkpoints, then took part in a picture quiz which in effect decided results. Almost everyone who started came back with the 12, except Jack Cooper from Anglesey who had camped overnight but who found that on his own he just could not and get the answers. Also Bruce Grant from South Wales who races his Morgan and found after a very recent Cadwell meeting that he had all sorts of grot in his oil, rang to say he wouldn't make it but then found a spare engine in his workshop, fitted it, came to Shropshire and started only to be hit by a succession of problems which decided him to start back for Glamorgan instead of finishing. In the quiz, amazingly no-one identified the Guzzi-powered Tri-King, only two got the Blackjack Zero, the identity of John Surtees remained a mystery to many, and a 1938 Morgan was labelled many other things. No-one recognised a 1948 Bristol car, or most of the array of vintage motorcycles, which the evil-minded organising genius (???) had lined up. Not even the 1885 Daimler. Graham Flint from Birmingham emerged the winner with 27 marks out of a possible 63. Adam Atkins of Banbury was runner-up on 21. Adam and passenger Mark Stowe drove their borrowed Gold Wing and Wessex chair back home and broke down three times. No wonder he called it a "nail". The disaster stories also concerned ourselves (did we hear a "serve you right"?)One of our family drove our Pembleton which expired three miles from the finish with a disconnected driveshaft, and had to make an undignified journey home next day, on a trailer. If only it had ben a nice day. But Marches on Wheelsd will still contribute £75 or so to the female half of the organising team's pet charity, Hope House Children's Hospices. And we very much enjoyed doing it. Thanks to all who took part, or helped. John and Joan Simcock (1641J)

The Great Glen Run 2007 Sixteen of us all met up at the Argyll Motor Works in Balloch on a cool Friday morning. Showers threatened but the rain held off as we headed west towards Argyll through the majestic Arrochar Alps and over the Rest and Be Thankful to Inverary, our lunch stop. Then heading south towards Lochgilphead, our most southerly point of the Great Glen, the scenery was beautiful with bluebells carpeting the hillsides and rhododendrons coming into bloom. On through Kilmartin Glen we stopped at Dunad, the ancient hill fort where the kings of Scotland were crowned. The intrepid hiked up the hill to place a foot in the ancient stone impression. After all we may be related to some ancient Scottish monarch if our foot fitted - a bit like Cinderella really. We continued on up the coast to Oban, where some of us stopped for coffee and shopping - back to the 21st century!

Arriving at the Ballahulish Hotel was a real treat as we had rooms with stunning views overlooking the loch. Reposing in the overstuffed leather coaches we partook of a wee dram before retiring. Next morning we headed north to Fort William, over the Ballahulish Bridge, with views of Glen Coe behind us and Nevis looming ahead. Meeting at the Spean Bridge Commando Memorial we headed up to Fort Augustus. We lost a few cars at this point but we all managed to get on the right road which headed east across open moorland and back towards the east bank of Loch Ness. Driving down a steep hill to Foyers, Barbara and Gos appeared out of nowhere in Ragbag ahead of us – how did they do that? Around Inverness and back down the A82 to Drummnadrochit, took us to our lunch of Nessie cutlets at the Loch Ness Monster Centre. Then on towards Cannich and what is reputed to be the most beautiful Glen in Scotland - Glen Affric – where we drank a toast to the glen with Lesley and Craig’s blackcurrant wine (see photograph). The rest of journey was north, through Strathglass to Beauly and, finally, Stathpeffer - a Victorian spa village - and the Ben Wyvis Hotel. The rooms were fine but Keith and Suzanne reckoned they had to share a broom cupboard in the attic with the pidgins! We spent the evening chatting with old friends and getting to know new members; including John Abbott who has a white Blackjack (is this an oxymoron?). Some excellent notes, prepared by Callum Beveridge, guided us on our final day. We set off under lowering skies, kitted up in wet-weather gear, and met up with Fred Rattray on the way through Dingwall.

Waiting for others to get petrol, the heavens opened and we had some seriously wet and windy weather. Undaunted, we pressed on along the Cromarty Firth and inland to Bonar Bridge. Some great scenery - including Million Dollar View - was glimpsed between heavy showers and wild gusts of wind. And so to Dunrobin Castle, home of the dastardly Duke of Sutherland - him who

ousted the Highlanders from their cottages to make way for sheep. Why is his statue still on top of the hill at Golspie? What a pile the castle is, all turrets and towers, based on a French Chateau we are told. A roaring fire in the tea rooms and homemade rolls and soup set us up for a quick turn around the gardens and, suitably fortified, we headed off to Tarbet Ness lighthouse to

see the Bottlenose Dolphins.

Mission accomplished! We had done the Great Glen and then some! Our final night was party night. Unfortunately, we had to eat in the main dining room, in our 40’s gear and it took the staff two hours to serve dinner, which cut into our evening’s revels somewhat. WWII posters were on the walls of the pavilion (see photograph), Glen Miller was playing In the Mood and Iain was quizzing the teams on the genus of giant rhubarb. “Rhubarb,” cried Keith, “you’ve got your taxonomy wrong!” For the furthest traveled under Citroen special power - Gos and Barbara in Ragbag; for the most authentic 1940’s dress - the Red Barron’s navigator, Judy; and the overall winners in their Falcon - Matthew and Alsie Joy. Callum must be congratulated on his first issue of the magazine on becoming our new Editor. The A.G.M. was a great success again with the hotel being situated in the centre of Harrogate - handy for exploring the town and it seems it will be held there again next year. Our first event this year at Chatham Docks was a good as ever, with the added bonus of glorious weather. Being early April it could have been dodgy. Nine cars turned up for the Bedfordshire Classic Car Show. It was quite a windy day so the first thing was to put up the tent to act as a windbreak. As it was fairly warm most people sat outside. Because of the strong wind we had doubts whether the old Shuttleworth Collection aircraft next door would fly - but they did. A British tri-plane flew (I had forgotten we had one in the first World

War) and also a Lysander from the second World War which was used for transporting agents to and from occupied Europe - I didn't think any existed now! There were also three bi-planes with girls on the upper wing - I don't know how they did it, especially with it being so blustery. Battlesbridge was a bit "damp" but Tony Saunders had also taken his Camper to a Club Stand and its awning was very welcome. The Aston Clinton Chiltern Hills Vintage Vehicle Rally (new to us) I thought was very good and we have to thank Jim Maude for allowing us to join his other Club Stand and also to his wife Trish for the excellent meal at their house afterwards. As we arrived at the house we were treated to a Kite (the feathered variety) soaring only 100 ft. above the house. Apparently they are making a big comeback in the Chiltern Hills area.

Not So Wild West On Sunday 6th May, a brave group of us met at 9am for the journey to Stoneleigh. It was not a particularly bright morning but I’m pleased to say we were all ‘rarin to go’. One of the group developed a rather nasty oil leak and despite several attempts to fix it during the 20 or so miles we had covered, he decided to abandon his trip and return home. Reluctantly, the rest of the group moved on and as we sped northwards the weather started to improve a little. Stoneleigh was well attended with 40 or so ‘specials’ mostly of Lomax origin but one or two other very nice and interesting three-wheelers. I was, personally, a little disappointed with the show contents from the manufacturers, but we all enjoyed the day, had convivial company and the bonus of a dry run home. After the pleasant journey on Sunday and an enjoyable social get-together with club members in reasonable weather, Popham was somewhat different! Lashing rain and hurricane winds…but for the redemption of a bit of sun later and a dry run home, it would have been one step from being a complete washout. Socially, this day was also good; five Lomaxes and a Blackjack lined up to make a club pitch but we had to erect the gazebo! – no easy matter as it transformed itself into a cross between a kite and a parachute! Endeavour prevailed, however, and we then had excellent shelter from the weather, which we soon shared with several members of the public and a dog or two. The show itself was obviously affected by the rain with stands being covered from time to time and virtually no flying due to the high winds, however there were a number of fry intervals which enabled everyone to wander

around and enjoy a marquee full of books, jumble and other assorted goodies. I’m sure that those who attended the show enjoyed the day and the organisers are to be thanked for putting on the event. Our ‘Over the Bridge’ run on the 10th of May was unfortunately cancelled due to lack of interest (The weather forecast was not all that promising) but Peter and Janet have said that they are willing to rearrange at a later date…and I should just like to thank them for their efforts. Monthly meetings ate the Strode Arms also had a disappointing start as I was the only club member in attendance…perhaps we can do better next time! My Magical Mystery Tour scheduled for the 10th of June has also had to be cancelled as I have to have an ‘op’ and my arm will be in plaster for a few weeks. I am hoping that someone will arrange an alternative venue and will let local members have details by phone if/when we have something sorted. I would like to welcome a new member…Darren Herbert who had a pert-built Lomax bought by his wife for his birthday. He tells me that he has now completed the build, has an MOT and on Monday the 21st of May, it goes for SVA. We wish him good luck and hope we might get a few interesting details from him which we can include at a layer date, Meanwhile, regards Ron and Janet Bishop (Member No. 847) P.S. I’ve just heard that Darren’s Lomax broke down on the way to SVA so he didn’t make the appointment...how disappointing especially as I know he had a few days off work to sort any problems that arose. Ah well…better luck next time!

At the beginning of May we had the Great Glen Run. Five Lomi, one Falcon, one Blackjack and two tin-tops were joined on the third day by Fred Rattray and his smart red and white Lomax. Six cars with eleven people started the run on Thursday evening, with massive amounts of food and comfortable beds at Chris and Judy’s ever expansive home. Craig and Lesley arrived with oil pumping out of their Lomax whenever they exceeded 80mph. The next day they managed to purchase a mammoth metal pan scrubber and with this high-tech piece of equipment, the problem was solved. An early start on Friday meant we caught the Glasgow rush-hour traffic. Yes – the Ladybird ground to a halt. Change of coil and away we went. All Scotland Frozen North perennial pushers will be pleased to hear that I have now purchased a 123 ignition! Met up with Iain and Janet, Mathew and Alsie and John Abbot at Argyll Motor Works. John on his first CSC event – we hope we haven’t put him off for ever!

On for a lovely run in hot sunshine, finishing the first section of the Great Glen at the Ballachulish Hotel. Janet and Iain are doing a full report so the rest is just a taster. Next day more sun and more marvellous scenery going into the Glen, over swing bridges and by Loch Ness. No monsters seen, and we finished in Strathpeffer. The following morning, strong winds and a few smatters of rain. The last part of the run, planned by editor Callum, went to the end of the Great Glen at Tarbat Ness. The wind was so strong that our hoisted brollies could have taken over from the deux chevaux! We got back safely to enjoy a meal and jollifications dressed in various interpretations of 1940’s dress. Iain was presented with a mini monster and Janet with a burnished metal dish. Many thanks from all of us for organising such a really lovely event. See you all in Derbyshire! Jennie

‘EAST COASTER’S’ I start with a personal big thank you from us all to Brian Peters for producing such well put-together Magazines during his tenure. And also to say to new Editor Callum Beveridge, good on yer mate for taking it on and congratulations on your first edition. Just imagine my surprise when I learned from Alan Peacock that at the CSC AGM, the Committee and members had awarded me the 'Nik Francois Award' for services to the Club! Apparently it was mainly for my obtaining vital and helpful information about the sale of the Lomax Motor Company to the ill-fated RSJigtec and the behind the scenes negotiations I was conducting both with RSJigtec and Cradley Motor Works on behalf of Club members. Also the work I did on information concerning the MCSVA scheme and its ramifications to CSC members. It is indeed an honour, I thank the members of the Committee for their generosity and I will give the award pride of place at my home during my 12 months custodianship. The March Meeting was sadly rather poorly attended, however, our new Events Coordinator John Davis is already researching future events. I have sent out a questionnaire to our members trawling for information on what special tools they hold, whether they be bought or locally produced, and whether they would be prepared to loan items to others on a ’break and replace’ basis. This venture has already unearthed some interesting results which will be analysed and placed in a Group database of tools held. This will then enable us to discover whether there any ‘special tools’ we haven’t got and which we can either buy or commission to be made. We are also looking into the bulk purchase of turn-

round spares for the Group, plugs, filters etc. In the early part of April, five of our cars attended the ‘Thrumpton Hall Easter Show’ just to the SW of Nottingham. This event was a first for the East Coaster’s and was the usual mix of attractions for this kind of show; a Re-enactment Society skirmish on the hill, craft and food marquee, horticultural and floral displays, Shire horses, sheep shearing, Morris men, Ferret racing, Dog shows, Arena activities and our old favourites, Static Steam Engines!! The sun brought out eleven of our members for the April ‘Monthly Meeting’ including newest member Keith Bradshaw from Grantham who owns an Orange 223 which, as far as I can make out, has no prior CSC history. We welcome Keith to the CSC in general and to the ‘East Coaster’s’ in particular. On the technical side we have two interesting projects underway. Firstly, new member Tony Wood from Wainfleet has been doing some work on the Yellow 223 he bought from fellow ‘East Coaster’ Dave Noble. He says its coming along very nicely and he should be able to bring it over to the ‘Aston’ to show us very soon. Secondly, our newest member Keith Bradshaw from Grantham owns a recently acquired Lomax 223. Although it is roadworthy and registered, Keith’s has dismantled the car completely and will be rebuilding it on a new galvanised chassis. In addition, Keith is keen to explore the various performance enhancement options available and is also looking at cosmetic changes like alloy wheels. We’ll have to watch him when its finished with all these gizmo’s, he’ll be taking all the awards at the shows we attend!

Lastly, the saga about the ailing engine in Paul’s Turner’s newly built and SVA’d Lomax 223 continues with some really good news but also some bad news. To recap, despite a plethora of suggestions from other Group members, and many checks and re-checks of components, wiring and the like, eventually one of our engine experts noticed that when the engine was coughing and spluttering as it has done for some time, one cylinder was warm and the other stone-cold, aha! Although Paul had fitted new plugs and leads during the build and the suspect ‘123’ electronic system had by now been removed and the original points box refitted containing brand new points and condenser, a replacement set of plugs were fitted and - bingo!! The engine ran on two cylinders. So one problem was - a duff brand new plug!!! That’s the good news. The bad news is that, the engine was run for a while, which it did perfectly once the cold cylinder had been cleared of unburnt fuel and soot. Then, during a high rev of the engine, there was a loud bang and the plug in the now working cylinder shot out taking the thread with it and landed at the bottom of the garden 30 feet away. Luckily, nobody was in the way! Paul decided to thread insert both cylinders, ordered the kit from ECAS and has already ‘helicoiled’ both cylinder heads. He is now looking forward tremendously to actually getting out and enjoying the car he has so laboriously and successfully built. And the morals? ‘New’ items fitted will not necessarily work and remember the old saying we used to live by as RAF Engineers - “don’t assume, check!”. The engine is now running well so fingers crossed. One of the Company options when thinking about building a Citroën ‘A’ Series based ‘Special’ is Deauville who,

since their early beginnings with the Canard 4 wheeler, have since expanded the Company to an impressive four model line-up: the Canard, Canjito, Corbeau and Landaulette. At the first Kit-Car Show of the season at Detling, however, Deauville showcased their new model, the Rondo Hotrod. Citroën 2CV-based again in 4-wheel plan, the Rondo is also known as the Vogilette in its native Holland where it is marketed by Deauville’s agents ‘Blaauw 2CV Cars’. By the way, any of you considering a new build in the future will be interested to hear that the new fee’s for SVA inspections are as follows: SVA car test (4-wheeler) £158, with a £32 retest fee, and MSVA (Trike) £90. Although the Group continue to meet at the ‘Aston Arms‘, Market Place, Market Rasen, (just over the road from our still closed pub, ‘The Chase’) we are starting to realise that it does not fully meet our requirements and will be searching the locale for a new venue. Should we find one before the next magazine, I will publish details on the CSC Forum. Toodlepip! David Field

The editors prototype 2-wheeler. The build guide said to cut the chassis behind the axle—it didn’t make it clear that it meant the rear axle!!!

North East News

Hi everyone and greetings from your erstwhile and now fully-retired North East Rep! Things are rather quite up here on the CSC front right now, so I hope that you all are making the most of the 3 and 4 wheel creations while the weather is good. We have had the usual selection of car shows over the first few months of the season, with the added attraction of a quite excellent AGM what seems a good time ago at the beginning of April. Of note, I had an excellent drive across the Derbyshire Dales to visit the Cheshire Kit Car Show at Capesthorne Hall, Macclesfield on 23 May, where it was good to see 25 home-made three wheelers of all kinds taking a prominent part in a super show in superb surroundings. CSC Member and serial car builder Frank Gibson (1467) very deservedly won the "Peoples' Choice" Trophy with his Moto-Guzzi 500 engined single-seat special - which I am pretty sure is the 3rd self designed and immaculately constructed car which Frank has got through the SVA over the past year or so. It is just a pity that Frank had left for home a few minutes before the announcement was made! My own car - the ever-lasting 223 "Demented Wasp" sailed through the MOT in early May with a brake efficiency a full 3 times better than last year thanks to my efforts changing over to disk rather than drum brakes late last year. I can now really enjoy the car's spine-tingling performance in the full knowledge that the "Wasp" will slow down in time for the next corner - in short a real pleasure on three wheels. Many readers will know that I organise one or more Dales Run each year and I have decided to go one better this September with a 140 mile "sectional run" calling at Harrogate, Grassington, Masham, Aysgarth, Hawes, Leyburn, Bedale and Ripon. Further details in next edition but basically members will be able to join (and indeed leave) this long and spectacular run at nominated points throughout its length. Please call or e-mail me on the contacts below for a chat of if you know of any special attractions on this basic route. Well I guess that is all for now - I hope to see a good turn out at Newark next week! with best wishes Dr John Fowler 01423 867410 [email protected]

Down South Didn’t make it to Exbury after the last meeting as planned as the heavens had opened for the bank holiday as usual. Peter Hill's trip got off to a very damp start that evening and we arrived home to find an email to say our trip to the Pyrenees was cancelled due to bad weather in the mountains. We only booked our ferry and overnight accommodation that morning! After all Peter’s hard work to get the Super Tourer on the road, Monday was a really bad for us! We are still going to France and we will see what happens. See you in Derbyshire probably looking a little rusty. Apparently the Classic Car ‘Breakfast’ at the Goodwood Café is on the first Sunday of each month not the second, we will arrange a trip later in the year.. Second weekend in August, our usual Area meeting, is The Bat and Ball Camp with free camping if we eat in the pub. They can also cater for breakfast if you wish. All club members welcome. Contact Paul Leaney or us for details and directions. As usual if you know of an event we can visit as a club, please let me know and we can let everyone know Carole and Peter Chitty Forthcoming Events: July 6–8 Ardingly Steam Fair and Classic Car Show Contact: Paul Leaney

STONELEIGH SHOW The Stoneleigh Show turned out to be an excellent recruiting day with eleven new members, one of whom, Dave Parr, won the Adrian Flux Trophy for the excellent build of his Pembleton Grasshopper, ‘Silverfish’. Well-done Dave.

The line up of Pembletons looked quite impressive, as did our line up of ‘Marques’ along the entrance to the club area, where they were first to be seen by the visitors. Lined up were Richard Allen’s Tripacer, New Member, John Bakker’s Pembleton, Dennis Jacob’s BRA, Callum Beveridges’s Burton, Glenn Clarke’s Blackjack, and German visitor and Forumist, Claus’s Moto Guzzi engined Lomax. Jim Blackhurst arrived later (after a ride round the whole exhibition centre to find us) in his Le Patron, along with a Falcon and the specials on the stand we had all Citroen Specials represented.

It was a difficult to choose a one off special but Richard Holt was parked near enough to the line up, and, with his Karacabin had, as usual, a lot of attention. Thanks to Kent Kit Car Club we were able to fly our banner as Peter had left out pole at home. I was dismayed to be charged £20 to bring the club tent on site and camp over the weekend, even though I had a club pass!! Peter had already paid for our tent when he went in earlier. I could not work out what the pass was for. Several conversations with the gate staff still did not sort it out.

Little did the club members know that I was dealing with their renewals and new memberships in my Pyjamas (!!) as I had only gone across to set up the table ready for the first arrivals when they were suddenly arriving! So a few cold cups of tea and curly

sandwiches later I was able to escape and get dressed properly. Thanks go to Heather Peters who noticed my predicament and helped out a few times - even though she and Brian were busy doing an excellent job selling the regalia. Those staying overnight settled down later to a Barbeque which we had shopped for the night before in Kenilworth – I don’t think anyone will forget a particular German visitor striding around the isles saying ‘Where is the English Jam, I want English Jam’! Hopefully you will meet up with Claus in Belgium next year. Monday turned out rather wet and windy and,

as usual, we did not have so many cars on the stand. I am not sure if I liked being in the Main Parade ring area. We saw nothing of the other club cars arriving which is usually a show in itself, and many of our own club members could not find us as they still had the old stand number printed in the programme – I even told the gate staff to point our cars in the right direction but this did not happen. The clubs from the whole of The main halls were a bit sparse compared to other years there were not the manufacturers present possibly due to the SVA testing. Carole and Peter Chitty

The Car’s The Star .I started building my first special, called the "Max Hyde Motors MK1", 9 years ago when I was 16 - a three wheeler with 2 seats and 2cv mechanicals. Not knowing a thing about cars, least of all the 2cv's rather odd characteristics, I learnt while I went. By the time it was finished 3 years later I was somewhat of an expert on 2cv's and how they work, so I soon set about building my second special, called the MK2.

This time it was a slightly more radical design but still based on a single 2cv donor. I designed my own chassis and body in the form of a 1930's single-seater style racer. My favourite part of the design is that although it looks unlike any other 2cv, underneath it is just a standard 1986 Dolly, with standard engine, box, suspension and so on. Although pleased with what I have achieved it's as far as a standard 2cv can be taken without substantially modifying it's parts and my engineering skills needed a new challenge.

So now I've started to build the MK3, still using 2cv parts but this time in a slightly more unconventional format. Firstly the engine is no longer poking out the front of the car for all to admire, but instead is mid mounted just behind the drivers seat with the gearbox hanging out from behind the rear wheels. This time the design is based on a 1960's grand prix car, particularly the BRM P83, but converting a 2cv into a rear wheel drive car is a little complicated.

I have got rid of the 2cv's ladder chassis completely and designed a full space-frame chassis made up from 3/4" and 1" steel tubing with an oval cross section forming a tunnel in which I sit. Just a few inches behind me sits the rear axle and trailing arms, and the engine and box sits between them, but because the drive-shafts now turn the rear wheels I have to weld front hubs onto rear arms.

Up front is a standard 2cv steering rack and

35

front arms but with a modified rake angle to the hubs. The drive-shafts will remain and a chopped down gearbox will sit in the nose of the car in order to retain the inboard discs. I have also modified the wheel hubs to accept some slightly bigger wheels to not only make the car look better but up the gear ratios at the same time.

It now has a fine set of 15" alloy wheels and Avon turbosteel tyres (more commonly used on Rolls Royce and Astons!) In fact most of the major components will be modified, the springs will be up-rated by about 2-300%, stiffer shocks fitted, and I am currently looking into replacing the standard 2cv track rods (which aren't all that good) with conventional track rods from something like an AX or Saxo.

The body will be made up from aluminium sheet with many parts of the car made from stainless steel and carbon fibre, keeping the weight down to a minimum. The engine will also undergo a few mods, it will remain 602cc's but with skimmed barrels, high lift camshaft, gas flowed heads, twin

Bing carbs with ram pipes, and a 2-into-1 stainless exhaust system with a carbon racing silencer poking up from under the gearbox at the rear of the car, so it should be good for about 55-60 BHP. I started the build back in October last year, but things aren't progressing as quickly as I would like as work, life, and my other cars have been getting in the way. The MK3 is only one of a collection including two 2cv vans, an H van, and of course the MK1 and MK2.

Being a keen 2cv enthusiast I'm constantly attending many 2cv events and will be off to Sweden for the World Meeting this summer, but hopefully come the autumn I will have the time to get some work done on the car, and when it's finished it should be one of the most unique 2cv's in the world! You can keep up with the MK3's progress and find out more about my other cars on my website www.maxhydemotors.com. Max Hyde
