Magazines lead a long and fascinating life. They take the time to be admired, read, touched and experienced from every angle. Magazines are bought or snatched from the mailbox by greedy hands that are full of expectation. They are initially scanned by curious eyes that browse through them and become increasingly interested in reading the content. In the next hours and days, a magazine will be picked up time and again to be read briefly or extensively, depending on the reader’s mood, the time and the location. As a result, magazines can extend their lifespan, across various instants, for a few hours, and even days or weeks. They are picked up again and again and devoured. And every time, they succeed in drawing in their audience, which is alternately critical, surprised, amused, touched and generally enjoys the experience. And naturally, they change hands: from mother to daughter, from friend to friend, from colleague to colleague… living Room magscan | 26 magscan | 27 it, more vitamin C and maybe some magnesium. Oh, and a ticket to Madagascar. I’ll drink to that! Ï Reading time: 1.5 hrs. Morning ritual Thursday morning, 6.30 a.m.: I take some time out to look at the newest book and music tips. My sleepy brain is not really taking in much, but I make a mental note to ask my colleagues later if they have already read the latest Nicci French. Regardless, I never have enough books. Ï Reading time: 5 minutes. a More active approach Saturday 4 p.m.: I’ve done all my shopping, the kids are out swimming with hubby and I’m brain training: I’ve already solved the Sudoku, I’ve studied the recipe for oriental scampi, I’ve read the article on how to raise teens and before I go to bed tonight I’m going to try out the tips for a flatter stomach. Peanuts! Ï Reading time: 2 hours. eMotional MoMent Sunday evening 10.30 p.m.: An article on how to deal with difficult neighbours. Just what my sister needs. Must give it to her to read. And the article about children with cancer hits me hard. I saved that for when I was alone, so I could cry in peace. Then it’s time to go to sleep and to realize how happy I am. Ï Reading time: 1 hr. Quick break Tuesday 5.45 p.m.: My favourite magazine is in the mail. But the kids will be home in a bit. Did you know that skilled readers are excellent multitaskers? As the soup is simmering, I manage to sneak a quick peek at what my magazine has in store for me this week and I already read my favourite sec- tion. Mmmmmm, I want to read more! Ï Reading time: 12 minutes. a long drawn-out read Wednesday 10.30 a.m.: My day off. Time to read in the garden in the sun, the fashion pages, the vitamin tips, the report on adventurous travels. In my mind, I find myself drawing up a shopping list with a lilac dress and red pumps on
