2016 Mr. Gorilla

Last year was the inaugural year for the Mr. Gorilla award, given to

the top senior in the state. The award is voted on by coaches around

the state and media members, both from Indiana and nationally.

Tommy Forte of Mishawaka was the first recipient, after a

dominating senior season that saw him capture his second state title.

This year’s race is going to be very compelling with seven wrestlers

that have set themselves apart from the rest. Those seven wrestlers

all won state titles last year as juniors and will look to repeat this

year. This year’s Mr. Gorilla race will be one to keep your eye on

throughout the season.

The early favorite for Mr. Gorilla is New Palestine’s Chad Red. His

accolades could fill an encyclopedia, as he has only done one thing

while in high school…that is WIN! He has won three state titles

without a loss and rarely been pushed to the limit. When he has

been pushed to the limit, you see him respond with tenacity, much

like a gorilla would. Outside of the state, Red has won national

titles in Cadet Freestyle, Flo Nationals title, and a Super 32 title.

Currently he is ranked #1 in the nation in all publications and has

held that spot for close to a year now. Lastly, Red has committed to

wrestle for the Huskers and Mark Manning at Nebraska.

Another potential Mr. Gorilla to watch is Merrillville’s Purple

Hulk, Shawn Streck. Streck has three state medals, all at

heavyweight, and is looking for his second state title. Last year he

was undefeated and pinned his way to a state title. Streck is also a

dominant force on the football field, tallying up sacks for the Pirate

squad. He is currently ranked in the top five by all national

publications.

Blake Rypel is another potential Mr. Gorilla with three state medals

to his credit. He started his career at 160lbs with a 7th place medal

and then a runner-up finish as a sophomore at 182lbs. Some of his

national success includes placing 4th at the Super 32 and winning

two IndianaMat Hoosier Preseason Open titles. He is another one

ranked highly nationally, with all publications putting him in the

top 6.

Drew Hughes started his career as a 120lber, but has packed on

some muscle to grow into the 160lbs weight class. He is another

potential Mr. Gorilla and will be aiming for his fourth state medal

after a runner-up finish as a freshman and 5th place finish as a

sophomore. Hughes capped his junior season with a state title.

Hughes has a 4th place finish at the Super 32, along with two

USAW Junior Folkstyle runner-up finishes on his resume. He is

another wrestler ranked nationally in the top 5, and will be staying

home and going to Indiana University next year.

Brock Hudkins was the lowest ranked wrestler to win a state title

last year. He was in an absolutely brutal weight class and came out

on top against many very talented foes. Along with his state title, he

has a 5th place finish as a freshman. As a sophomore he was a

semistate champion, but fell ill before his Friday night match.

Hudkins is projected to once again be in a barnburner of a weight

class this year.

Kobe Woods is another big guy high on the Mr. Gorilla list. This

Kingsman has been to State all three years and brought home

medals twice. After initially qualifying for state as a freshman at

220lbs, he made the drop to 195lbs as a sophomore to place 6th.

Last year he

captured his first

state title, this

time back at

220lbs. His

national resume

includes runner-

up finishes at

UWW Cadet

nationals and

NHSCA Junior

nationals. He is

ranked 3rd in the

country at 220lbs

and has recently

committed to be

a Boilermaker.

Jacob Covaciu is

the last wrestler

we will

highlight. As a

freshman he

qualified for

state, but

followed that up

with a runner-up

performance as a

sophomore. Last

year he captured

his first state title, after defeating nemesis Steven Lawrence in

overtime. On the national scene, Covaciu placed 7th at Fargo in

Junior Freestyle this past summer.

Highlighting only the state champions is easy, but other seniors to

watch this year include a pair of Portage runner-ups in Gaige Torres

and Steven Lawrence. They both have two state medals apiece and

are looking for their first state title. Another Penn wrestler to watch

is Drew Hildebrandt, who has three state medals, along with a

Fargo Junior Freestyle runner-up placement. Lastly, Jordan Vaughn

of Franklin Central and Sage Coy of Delta both had high

placements this past year and will contend for state titles. This will

be a great year for the Mr. Gorilla award, with a lot of talented

wrestlers vying for this award.

Jacob Covaciu and Steven Lawrence battle it out

in the 145lbs championship.

Kobe Woods returns after his first state title in 2015. He is ranked

in the top five in all major publications.

year on his way to a state title. Colton Cummings won his

first title as a sophomore at 106lbs and he comes in as the

second ranked junior. Breyden Bailey has only two losses on

his career and has two bronze medals from the state

tournament. Andrew Davison won two of the three legs of

IndianaMatdotcom 6 - 2015 IndianaMat Preview Magazine @IndianaMat

1. Warren Central (12 returning): The Warr iors are the talk

of Indiana wrestling leading into the 2015-16 season. Jim Tonte,

arguably the best coach in Indiana High School wrestling, has

made the switch north and east in Marion County from Perry

Meridian to Warren Central. Along with him comes his son, last

year's state runner-up at 195 lbs. Combined with the transfer of

former Cathedral state-placer, Skylour Turner, and the addition

of Tonte Jr. and Sr., the Warriors of Warren Township have the

potential to field a lineup that would include NINE former state

qualifiers. Such a lineup may seem unbeatable on paper, but it

will be up to Coach Tonte to get everyone a spot and to be ready

for the state duals come January.

2. Evansville Mater Dei (10 returning): The Wildcats are, as

usual, up at the top of the Indiana state rankings as they look to

repeat as Dual Format State Champions in 2015-16. Still a fairly

young team, it will be up to Coach Schaefer to challenge the

newly formed juggernaut of Warren Central. Mater Dei's lineup

will feature an impressive seven state medals led by the brothers

Lee, who both finished their individual seasons under the lights

last year. Two-time state qualifier Blake Jourdan clinched the

3A title for the Wildcats last year and will look to duplicate that

feat this year, along with joining his teammates under the lights

at Bankers Life.

3. Portage (10 returning): Por tage made a return to the elite

of Indiana High School Wrestling last year, begging the question

to be asked: How did they not get invited to the IHSWCA state

duals last year? Well, the Indians could not be held out of the

event this year, as Coach Vega's boys will be looking to find

their way into the finals of the event come January. We will

learn a lot about the Indians as they have strengthened their

schedule again this year to ready themselves for the tournament.

Portage will participate in arguably the three premier events in

the state this year: Calumet's Traicoff Invite, Mishawaka's Al

Smith Invite, and the IHSWCA state duals.

4. Penn (10 returning): Coach Harper 's defending IHSAA

State Champion Kingsmen are once again in the upper echelon

of Indiana wrestling, challenging for both an IHSWCA and

IHSAA title, year after year. Led by two seniors who were under

the lights last year in Kobe Woods and Drew Hildebrandt, Penn

will once again wrestle a grueling schedule. A heartbreaking

loss on criteria to Perry Meridian kept the Kingsmen from taking

their shot at the title in the finals at the state duals, but ten of

those varsity men return to attempt to put Penn back on top in

both the duals and tourney formats.

5. Brownsburg (11 returning): After building momentum for

several years, it may be time for Coach Snyder's boys to make a

big splash on the scene state-wide. Led by talented sophomore

Ty Mills and returning state qualifiers CJ Damler and Nathan

Walton, Brownsburg will look to build on last season's

outstanding performance. The Bulldogs also have Brayton Lee,

who finished the season with a single defeat at semi-state in

Evansville last year.

6. Cathedral (11 returning): The Ir ish have finished 1st and

2nd the last two years at Bankers Life and it is reasonable to

expect them to see them near the top of that leaderboard high in

the rafters again come February. Few teams in the state can

match the star power of Cathedral, with four returning state

medalists, led by returning State Champ Blake Rypel. Those

four are also backed up by four returning semi-state qualifiers,

leading this writer to believe that Coach McGinley may have

one of his best dual teams in years.

7. Perry Meridian (8 returning)

8. Avon (6 returning)

9. New Palestine (11 returning)

10. Bellmont (11 returning)

11. Jennings County (9 returning)

12. Lawrence North (10 returning)

13. Delta (14 returning)

14. Carmel (12 returning)

15. Merrillville (7 returning)

16. Carroll (FW) (9 returning)

17. Prairie Heights (12 returning)

18. Valparaiso (12 returning)

19. Lowell (12 returning)

20. Columbus East (14 returning)

2A Preseason Rankings

1. Bellmont (11 returning): The Braves embark on the 2015-16

season with perhaps their first real chance at an IHSWCA 2A title

in the state duals era. The boys from Decatur will also be led by a

new man in the chair as former State Champ Paul Gunsett becomes

just the 6th head coach in Bellmont's long history. Coach Gunsett

will once again have a full lineup, as the Braves were unable to fill

the 106 slot for a single match last season. Four Braves wrestlers

return with four state qualifiers, but no state medals. Fans from

Decatur will look to regain bragging rights this season over rival

Yorktown and regain a conference title.

2. Delta (14 returning): Delta has spent the last few years

looking up at Delaware county rivals Yorktown in the 2A

standings, but this may be the year in which those roles are

reversed. A pair of Eagles finished the season with just two losses a

season ago, as Sage Coy was perhaps the surprise of the

tournament, finishing third, and Jacob Gray, 6th at 160 last year.

Coach Schliessman's crew begin the season with basically their

entire roster returning. If everyone can slot into the right weights, it

could be Delta climbing to the top of not just Delaware County but

also the entire 2A field.

3. Mount Vernon (Posey): (12 returning) Mt. Vernon lose very

little from last year's squad, which was easily one of the best dual

teams in 2A. Two junior state qualifiers return, accompanied by a

class of five returning varsity seniors who will look to improve on

last year's fourth place finish in Muncie.

4. Evansville Memorial (13 returning): Coach Mattingly's

Tigers return a big chunk of their lineup and will battle with Mt.

Vernon for 2A supremacy in the south. Always a good dual team,

the Tigers will be led by two seniors with a lot of varsity experience

in Chance Williams and Noah Huelsing. Memorial finished a

disappointing 7th at the IHSWCA duals last year, but will be

looking for a spot in the semifinals for sure this season.

5. South Dearborn (11 returning): The Knights from Aurora

have been a team which historically get very little press across the

state, but that may change this year, as South Dearborn return the

bulk of their lineup from last year and look to spoil the party of

traditional 2A powers in Fort Wayne in January. Junior Cainan

Schaefer, a state qualifier a year ago, will lead the team into the

season, along with five seniors who made it to semi-state in 2015.

6. Yorktown (5 returning)

7. Peru (11 returning)

8. Lebanon (9 returning)

9. Franklin County (8 returning)

10. West Lafayette (12 returning)

1A Preseason Team Rankings

1. Prairie Heights (12 returning): The high school wrestling

script writers threw everyone a curveball last year as the finals at

the IHSWCA State Duals featured preseason #1 vs #3 in 3A, #1 vs

#2 in 2A, and #1 Adams Central vs unranked Prairie Heights. The

Panthers came within one match of the upset, falling to the Flying

Jets 35-28. Returning the bulk of their lineup from last year, no one

will be overlooking Coach Smith's squad this year. Brothers Jed and

Doug Levitz lead a lineup that will feature seven wrestlers who

have experience at the semi-state level.

2. Oak Hill (10 returning): The Eagles have been teeter ing on

the line between the lowest and the middle class the last few years,

but find themselves in the 1A field for IHSWCA State Duals this

season. Led by a contingent of seven semi-state qualifiers from last

year, it is important to note that only four of the returning varsity

wrestlers are seniors. Expect to see Oak Hill near the top of the 1A

rankings for years to come.

3. Southmont (9 returning): The Mounties, now in 1A, will look

to take advantage of their drop in class and make a run at the 1A

IHSWCA title. Seniors Alex Grino and Boone Welliever will look

to take that one last step to Bankers Life and join teammates Zach

Worm and Connor Moore, who both qualified last year in

Indianapolis. Southmont will need to fill a few spots at the upper

weights, but if it all comes together, they are definitely a player in

the 1A field.

4. Adams Central (11 returning): The returning Champs of 1A

return a strong squad as they look to return to the 1A Title Match

for the fourth year in a row. The Flying Jets will be led by senior

Hunter Bates and returning state qualifier Anthony Mosser, who

look to continue the long, proud tradition of Adams Central

wrestling.

5. Knightstown (13 returning): The Panthers out of the

Shenandoah sectional return 13 starters this year. Seven of the

returners were regional qualifiers with three advancing to the

always tough New Castle Semi-State. Seniors Balin Orcutt was a

regional champion along with regional third placers Adam Bundy

and Jason Dishman. With that much experience returning look for

coach Jared Evans’ squad to be one of the best in 1A.

6. Monrovia (10 returning)

7. Delphi (9 returning)

8. Centerville (9 returning)

9. Bremen (12 returning)

10. Milan (10 returning)

1. Ty Mills-10-Brownsburg- Mills will once again man the

lowest weight for the Bulldogs. He finished his season under the

lights with a silver medal.

2. Keyuan Murphy-12-Warren Central- Murphy will return to

this weight after qualifying for state last year. He was unable to

participate due to injury.

3. Kory Cavanaugh-11-Penn- Cavanaugh is another state

qualifier returning to the lightest weight. He will look to finish

this season with a medal.

4. Alex Bautista-10-Hanover Central- Bautista is yet another

great Hanover Central lightweight. He was two points shy of a

berth at the state finals last year.

5. Asa Garcia-9-Avon- Garcia is one of the top freshmen in the

state this year. He will be the tiny anchor is a very young Oriole

line-up.

6. Alex Strueder-10-Fishers- Strueder made his way to state

after the Murphy injury. He had a good off season at ISWA

events.

7. Wyatt Miller-10-South Adams- Miller suffered from the usual

Fort Wayne death draw last year. This year he is a favorite to

bring a medal back to Berne.

8. Garrett Walton-10-South Dearborn- As an undersized 113lber

Walton made his way to the New Castle semistate. Look for him

to do better at 106lbs this year.

9. Clay Egli-9-Evansville Mater Dei- Egli looks to continue the

success of the family at the state tournament. He will step into a

potent line-up as a freshman.

10. Dalton Craig-10-Jennings County- Craig made it to the

ticket round at Evansville last year as a freshman. He will be

looking to take his season one week longer this year.

11. Sam Fair-9-Perry Meridian- Fair is another top incoming

freshman this year. He has had success both in-state and

nationally during his youth.

12. Breyden Curtis-9-Yorktown- Curtis will be another Yorkie

contender at 106lbs this year. He has had lots of success on the

middle school scene.

13. Cayden Rooks-9-Columbus East- Rooks will look to follow

in his brother's footsteps this year. His success at the youth level

indicates he will be a contender.

14. Lukasz Walendzak-9-Indianapolis Cathedral- Walendzak is

a tough incoming freshman for the Irish. He has placed

numerous times at the state level youth events.

15. Kaelin Kelly-10-Crown Point- Kelly was the starter last year

for the Bulldogs and looks to build upon his 23 wins from last

year.

16. JC Herring-11-Marion- Herring was a semistate qualifier for

the Giants last year. He will have the advantage of being a junior

at this weight class.

1. Colton Cummings-11-Lowell- Cummings will be bumping up

a weight class after capturing the 106lbs state title last year.

Look for more of the same out of the Lowell little guy.

2. Alec White-11-New Palestine- White was a state qualifier last

year after a 4th place finish as a freshman. Look for him to be on

the podium again this year.

3. Cainan Schaefer-11-South Dearborn- Schaefer won a New

Castle semistate championship last year, but fell on Friday night

at state. That loss will be motivation for this year.

4. Tylor Triana-10-Hobart- Triana placed 5th last year at 106lbs

for the Brickies. He is a tough grappler that can mix it up with

the top wrestlers at this weight.

5. Austin Slates-12-Penn- Slates will make his way back into a

really tough Penn line-up this year. He was out last year due to

injury after qualifying for state as a freshman.

6. Tanner DeMien-10-Northwood- DeMien pulled one of the

best upsets on Friday night last year and looks to build upon his

7th place performance this year.

7. Geoffrey Davis-12-Fort Wayne Wayne- Davis had a breakout

year last year when he made his way to the semi-finals. Will he

be able to duplicate his run this year?

8. Nicholas Weaver-12-Brownsburg- Weaver had numerous

wins over state qualifiers this past year, but the semistate draw

gods were not on his side. Look for him to make a deep run this

year.

9. Jabin Wright-11-Kokomo- Wright was a surprise state

qualifier last year for the Wildkats. He will build upon his state

run to potentially a podium finish this year.

10. Baxter Annakin-10-Castle- Annakin was on the brink of

qualifying for state last year, but came up just a little short. Look

for a big improvement from this young lad.

11. Colin Poynter-10-Portage- Poynter will be one of many

tough wrestlers in the Indians' line-up this year. He had wins

over many top guys last year.

12. Ian Dembowski-10-Valparaiso- Dembowski spent time in

the rankings last year and he had wins over multiple state

qualifiers. He will be one to watch at this weight.

13. Josh Stephenson-11-Yorktown- Stephenson has come close

to punching his ticket to state the past two years. This year

should be his year to wrestle at Bankers Life.

14. Ben Streeter-12-Fort Wayne North Side- Streeter was an

overtime takedown away from a state medal last year. This year

he wants to stand on the podium.

15. Mason Kaufer-12-Corydon Central- Kaufer returns after

qualifying for state as a freshman. His sophomore season was

cut short due to injury.

1. Drew Hildebrandt-12-Penn- Hildebrandt starts the season as

the top ranked wrestler after a runner-up performance last year.

He also has medals from his freshman and sophomore years.

2. Blake Glogouski-12-Fairfield- Glogouski finished 5th at 113lbs

last year after qualifying for state as a freshman. Don't overlook

this scrappy wrestler from New Paris.

3. Kyle Luigs-11-Evansville Mater Dei- Luigs placed 6th at

113lbs for the Wildcats in 2015. He will be counted on even more

this year as Mater Dei contends for a team state title.

4. Skylour Turner-11-Warren Central- Turner comes to Warren

Central with two state medals and is aiming for the top spot on

the podium. Don't overlook this solid grappler.

5. Graham Rooks-10-Columbus East- Rooks had a stellar

freshman campaign that saw him take home the bronze medal.

The jump two weights class will pose a challenge, but he should

handle it well.

6. Miguel Prado-11-Portage- Prado spent some time in the

In just their third year back in the Calumet regional, Portage might

have enough firepower this season to topple conference rival

Merrillville. Coach Vega and staff seem to be using the blueprint of

mentors Coach Tharp and Coach Pendoski, by surrounding a couple

of bona fide studs with several hard nosed grinders that seem to

peak at the right time.

The Pirates of Merrillville will certainly not back down at this

challenge to their regional supremacy. Shawn Streck and Jacob

Covaciu provide the strongest 1-2 punch in the state and Coach

Maldanado always develops excellent second-tier wrestlers.

Don’t sleep on Hobart in this regional, either. The Brickies return

state placer Tylor Triana and two-time qualifier Brendan Black to

the lineup.

Top 5 Teams 1. Portage – The Indians appear to possess the right combination

of frontline studs and supporting cast to defend their regional

crown. Portage has its own formidable 1-2 punch in seniors Gaige

Torres and “Bam” Lawrence. Junior state qualifier Ismael Cornejo

and sophomore 8th place finisher Kasper McIntosh provide

additional strength to the lineup. Coach Vega has a team that

should be able to challenge for a state title this year. 2. Merrillville – Two state champions return to the Pirates’

lineup for 2016. Streck and Covaciu have a combined six trips to

state, five state medals, and two state championships. They also

return junior state qualifier Michael DeLaPena and semistate

qualifier Elijah Ray. There might have to be some Maldanado

magic this year for the Pirates to challenge Portage. 3. Hobart – The Brickies return a whopping eleven regional

qualifiers this season and present a real threat to Portage and

Merrillville. Triana and Black are the stars in this lineup, but they

also return semistate qualifiers in seniors Jacy Leon, Kyle

Schoenborn, and Matt Szarmach, as well as juniors Zach Lovell and

Angelo Guamero. If some of Hobart’s second tier kids develop, the

Brickies might be able to make the Big Two sweat. 4. Lake Central – Coach Josh Morgan will take over a solid

squad this year. The Indians don’t appear to be quite as strong as

they have been in recent years and look to be rebuilding. Five

regional qualifiers will join state qualifier Jake Kleimola and

semistate qualifier Tristan Pappas.

5. Hammond Morton – The Governors’ torch-bearer for the

past few seasons, Rickie Rodriguez, has graduated, but the well is

not dry in Hessville. Coach Kevin Persely welcomes back three

semistate qualifiers in senior big man Seth Rincon and juniors

Angel Perez and Robert Edwards.

Top Individuals (Last Year's Weight) 1. Shawn Streck – 12 – (285) – Merrillville – Ranked third in the

country at heavyweight, Streck is a virtual lock to repeat as state champion.

Several Big 10 schools are wooing the big Pirate for his services in college

2. Jacob Covaciu – 12 – (145) – Merrillville – It took over time under

the lights for Covaciu to avenge his lone defeat of the season and take the

state title. His rivalry with Lawrence will be must-see wrestling this

season.

3. Steven “Bam” Lawrence – 12 – (145) – Portage – Lawrence made a

leap forward last year, to the point where Covaciu was his only real

competition. He is the Indiana Mat Gorilla poster boy.

4. Gaige Torres – 12 – (126) – Portage – Torres was the second Indian

to wrestle under the lights last season. This two-time medalist will be

gunning for a state title this year.

5. Jeremiah Reitz – 11 – (120) – Griffith – Reitz had a notable rivalry

with Brendan Black last season during his run to state. Look for the former

state champ to return to the podium this year.

6. Tyler Triana – 10 - (106) – Hobart – Triana lost a narrow 1-0 match

on Saturday morning, or he might have been wrestling under the lights. He

is one tough little Brick.

7. Jason Crary – 11 – (126) - Munster – Crary has kind of slid under

the radar in his first two seasons, but he already has two state medals (6th

and 7th).

8. Brendan Black – 11 – (120) – Hobart – Another two-time state

qualifier, Black forms part of a dynamic duo at the top of the Brickie

lineup. Black placed 8th as a freshman, but was only a qualifier last year.

9. Kasper McIntosh – 10 – (138) – Portage – McIntosh leads the next

generation of Portage studs. In his first year, he put together 30 wins and a

state placing of 8th.

10. Jake Kleimola – 12 – (182) – Lake Central – Kleimola was a regional

champ and state qualifier. Unfortunately, he placed fourth behind the

eventual state champion as well as the 4th and 5th placers. A high spot on

the podium is realistic this year. Others to Watch Calumet –Victor Lizardi(132), James Lewis(285). E.C. Central – Santino

Hernandez(120), Cesar Guillen(160), Scottie Ray(182), James London

(285). Gary West – Mylie Mosely(220). Griffith – Ben Stassin(160),

Manny Aguirre(220). Hammond – Lorenzo Wilson(106). Hammond

Bishop Noll – Tyler Robinson(113). Ham. Clark – Ryan Klus(138).

Ham. Gavit – Tyler Reyes(113), John Wilson(152), Michael Maravilla

(160), Kyle Heard(170), Malcolm Lang(182). Ham. Morton – Brendan

Garcia(120), Nick Martinez(145). Highland – Jake Hirchak(106), Justice

Zachary(113), Justin Maldonado(160), Seth Leon(182). Hobart –Donte

Colza(126), Sergio Castellanos(132), Aaron Buhman(195), David

Kostbade(220). Lake Central – Tristan Pintor(132), Romel Spight(160),

Russel Gibbs(195), Joey Szydio(220), Brett Brown(285). Lake Station –

Billy Burt(106), John Taylor(113), Richard Joanitis(145), Brandon Clay

(170), Tim Smith(195). Merrillville – Nathan Potter(120), Ahzsur Ursery

(126), Brandon Streck(220). Munster – Elain Morgan(106). Portage –

Colin Poynter(106), Tim Gensimore(113), Miguel Prado(120), Tyler

Joseph(132), Iszak Morgan(160), Givoni Murillo(285). River Forest –

Jermaine Fletcher(120), Ty Torres(126), Isaac Pagan(132), Craig Chandler

(170). Whiting – Avian Duarte(152).

Two nationally ranked wrestlers and two returning state champions

highlight the Crown Point regional for 2016. Drew Hughes is the

reigning champ at 160 pounds and is currently ranked 4th in the

country. His teammate Colton Cummings dominated the 106 lb

division en route to a state title. The last member of the Big Three

is Andrew Davison of Chesterton. Davison lost a narrow, 1-point

decision to eventual runner-up Corey Hinkle. Davison’s productive

offseason has him ranked 17th in the country at 195.

On the team level, this might be the year that Crown Point drops

off its long time perch as masters of this regional. Three teams

seem poised to make a run at the Bulldogs. The Red Devils from

southern Lake County seem to have the best shot, led by Hughes

and Cummings. Valparaiso has a lineup with plenty of depth, but

may lack the top-end talent. Chesterton Trojans counter with

headliner Davison and a load of talented underclassmen.

Top 5 Teams 1. Lowell – Cummings and Hughes are a dominant duo for

Bobby Howard’s Red Devils, but they are not the only studs in the

Lowell room. Isaac James and Lucas Finger (113) were both one

win away from joining Cummings and Hughes at State. Zach

Galvin(120) and Jerril Fortner(285) also made it to the Merrillville

semistate. 2. Crown Point – Thirteen straight sectional and eight straight

regional crown are the legacy that the Bulldogs have carved out for

themselves. Very impressive, but these steaks might be in jeopardy

this year. It will be up to state-streeters Daylen Schurg(145) and

Justin Akers(195), along with semistate qualifiers Johnathan Moran

(113) and Oszkar Kasch(152), to continue the Crown Point

tradition.

3. Valparaiso – Coach Mark Line begins his third season at the

helm for the Vikings and has yet another strong and balanced team.

His son Austin and the Dembowski brothers will lead Valpo’s squad

this season. Greg(145) and Mike Lichtenberger(152) are another

set of brothers that made it to semistate. Jake Cummens(132) and

Alex Kukurugya(220) were both regional runners-up, and Sam

Nowosad(182) rounded out the Viking semistaters. 4. Chesterton – Behind the strength of Andrew Davison and

others, the Trojans have thrust themselves into contention for

regional supremacy. Ticket-rounders Jack Tolin and Diego Lemly

will join fellow semistate qualifiers Luke Zelenka and Dan Cutter

in their effort to unseat the traditional powers in this regional.

5. Kankakee Valley – The Kougars return six regional

qualifiers and two semistaters, juniors Bryce Niewoehner(126) and

Aron Ceglarek(285). Coach Brad Burvan seems to have his squad

on the upswing and breaking into this regional’s top five is a real

possibility.

Top Individuals (Last Year's Weight) 1. Drew Hughes – 12 – (160) – Lowell – Hughes r an the table and was

rarely challenged last season. With another title, Hughes will cement his

legacy as one of Lowell’s all-time greats. The Red Devil stud is a monster

on top in par terre.

2. Colton Cummings – 11 – (106) – Lowell – Cummings was almost as

dominant as Hughes last year. His only loss was up at 120 to David

Clayton. He will be a force at either 106 or 113.

3. Andrew Davison – 11 – (182) – Chesterton – Davison is an ultra-

talented underclassman who went 41-3 on his way to a fifth place medal.

He should cruise to a semistate title this season.

4. Daylen Schurg – 12 – (145) – Crown Point – The Schurg train keeps

on rolling at the Point. Daylen put together a nice run to the state finals and

will look to medal in his senior year.

5. Justin Akers – 11 – (195) – Crown Point – Akers had a breakout

season and parlayed a favorable draw at semistate into his first trip to the

state finals. At State he ran into uber-stud Blake Rypel on Friday night.

Akers should be a lock for two more trips to Indy.

6. Tristan Dembowski – 12 – (126) – Valparaiso – Dembowski is a

former state qualifier who made it to the ticket round last year in a loaded

field at 126. He is definitely talented enough to medal.

7. Isaac James – 12 – (170) – Lowell – James was upset last year in the

ticket round and ended his season with an outstanding 32-5 record. If he is

healthy after football season, a deep state run is possible.

8. Johnathan Moran – 11 – (113) – Crown Point – Moran is the third

Bulldog in the top ten and has a trip to the semistate ticket round on his

resume.

9. Austin Line – 12 – (113) – Valparaiso – Line is a two-time ticket-

rounder who has piled up nearly 70 wins in the past two seasons. He will

be grinding for that first state visit.

10. Ian Dembowski – 10 – (106) – Valparaiso - Ian is the second

Dembowski in the top 10 and comes from a family rich in wrestling

success. A freshman trip to the ticket round should fuel the fire.

Others to Watch Andrean – Jack Walton(113), Duncan Haupt(195). Boone Grove – Ryan

Stanford(126). Chesterton – Josh Jensen(113), Cade Girgenti(126), Steve

Biancardi(132), Lucas Davison(152). Crown Point – Noah LaMore(126),

Mihailo Bradash(182). Armando Ramirez(285). Hanover Central – Alex

Bautista(106), Vince Liggin(132), Evan Larsen(160), Ashton Mutuwa(182).

Hebron – Tyler Hill(138). John Glenn – Devon Becker(138), Tyler Amor

(152). Kankakee Valley – Avery Blake(120), Luke Solomay(152), Nick

Schoonveld (170), Jake Williams(195). Knox – Seth Hernandez (106), Jake

Krause(170). LaPorte – Tyler Medieros (106), Skyler Gomez (113), TJ Dankert

(120), Colton Tanber(138), Tyler Schoff (152), Marsalis Watkins(182). LaVille

– Bryant Huntsberger(145), Corian Correll(195). Lowell – Ryan Bottos (132),

Justin Miner( 138). Michigan City – David “Magic Man” Taylor(106), Luke

Powell (113), Dee Collins(132), Jordan Otero (160). New Prairie – Dylan

Petrovski(106), Kyle Garoutte(113), Clay King(132), Aaron Stewart(152),

Jordan Plonka(160), Eli Tyler(170). North Judson – Zach Bridegroom(126),

Gavin King (285). Valparaiso – Nathan Beller (120), Billy Baldwin(160).

Wheeler – Jose Diaz (106), Clay Turpin(170).

Isaac James from Lowell was a semi-state qualifier last year.

Penn High School put all it all together in 2015 and won their first

team State title. The Kingsmen lose some bona fide studs in state

champion Chase Osborn and fifth place medalists Joey

Mammolenti and Cory Christman. With the deepest room in the

state, Penn should have little trouble in plugging holes and

continuing to dominate this regional.

Leading the Penn parade this season will be returning 220 champ

and nationally-ranked Kobe Woods as well as 113lb state runner-up

Drew Hildebrandt. Both of these studs should begin the year top-

ranked in their weight classes. State qualifiers Kory Cavanaugh

and Jarod Swank also return to help defend the team State title.

Conference rivals South Bend Riley and Mishawaka will likely

battle for second place at the Rochester regional. Riley appears to

have a leg up based on the return of fourth place finisher Tristan

Goering at 160 and semistate champ Austin Laughlin at 132

Top 5 Teams 1. Penn – The Penn powerhouse under Coach Harper and staff

continues to roll along. The 2015 version nearly tripled the score of

second place Riley on their way to the State title. The

aforementioned studs will be joined by regional champs Cameron

Beam and Denzyl Prentice to form the core of the Penn lineup.

2. South Bend Riley – Coach Bill Flatt’s Wildcats were

runners-up last season at this regional and they return a nice group

of wrestlers for 2015. Joining state qualifiers Goering and Laughlin

will be ticket-rounder Kassius Breathitt and semistate qualifier

Bryton Goering (113). Riley wrestlers are typically very good

throwers and Coach Flatt is a veteran coach who prepares his kids

well. 3. Mishawaka – The proud Caveman program has never

finished lower than second in this regional until last year. There is

just too much tradition and pride in the Princess City to allow the

slide to continue. The Cave Kids return state qualifier Ryan

Hardesty and 2014 7th place finisher Daniel Hesch, who missed last

season due to injury.

4. Plymouth – The Rockies traditionally put a well-balanced

physical squad on the mat and this season is no different. Plymouth

will be led by former state qualifier and ticket-rounder Cody

Allmon, who will be looking to return to Bankers Life Fieldhouse

in his senior season. Classmate Jeremy Splix anchors the upper

weights and young Zane DeVault showed a lot of promise in his

rookie season

5. Warsaw – The Tigers make their first-ever appearance on the

regional top five list. Coach Justin Smith will count on two-time

medalist Kyle “Sloth” Hatch to lead his team. Senior Andrew Brock

has shown excellent growth and improvement and might be a

darkhorse state qualifier. Four other regional qualifiers round out

Warsaw’s returning strength.

Top Individuals (Last Year's Weight) 1.Kobe Woods – 12 – (220) – Penn – Woods is the returning State

champion at 220 and he ran the table last year with a 44-0 record. The fourth

ranked wrestler in the country is a virtual lock to make his fourth trip to State

and claim his second State championship.

2.Drew Hildebrandt – 12 – (113) – Penn – Hildebrandt was one of three

Kingsmen to wrestle under the lights last year, and finished 2nd with a record

of 38-1.

3.Kyle Hatch – 11 – (120) – Warsaw – Hatch already has two outstanding

seasons in the Tiger orange, placing 8th and 7th in his first two seasons. He has

fashioned an excellent 78-14 record and could be a four-time state medalist.

4.Tristin Goering – 11 – (160) – SB Riley – Goer ing got on a roll last

February at State and made a run to the semi-finals, eventually finishing 4th in

the state. This was after placing third at sectional and fourth at semistate.

5.Austen Laughlin – 12 – (132) – SB Riley – Laughlin is another example

of a wrestler hitting a hot streak. After a rough regional, Laughlin blitzed the

field on the way to a semistate title. His season ended abruptly on Friday

night with a loss to Evan Eldred.

6.Triston Rodriguez – 12 – (138) – Culver Community – Rodriguez

continues a tradition of state qualifiers from Culver. He put together a fine 38

-4 record on his trip to Indy. Rodriguez’ season also ended on Friday night.

7.Jarod Swank – 11 – (152) – Penn – Swank beat just about everybody

not named Tommy Forte last year and qualified for State, where he lost on

Friday night to a red-hot Elijah Dunn.

8.Tavonte Malone – 11 – (145) – SB Adams – Malone won his fir st

regional title and followed that up with a third place finish at semistate. A

narrow one-point loss on Friday night prevented him from medaling.

9.Kory Cavanaugh – 11– (106) – Penn – This Penn light weight improved

tremendously over the course of the season and parlayed a regional

championship into a State finals berth.

10.Ryan Hardesty – 12 – (120) – Mishawaka – Hardesty was the lone

Caveman State qualifier and will be asked to provide leadership for the young

Mishawaka squad this year.

Others to Watch Bremen – Jacob Thornton(106), Er ic Starke(120), Matt Moore(160), Mitch

Moore(171), Zach Campbell(182). Caston – Jacob Maroney(113). Culver

Academy – Adam Davis(113), Aaron Brooke(113), Steven Muthar t(132),

Simon Griffith(220). Culver Com. – Brendan Walters(120). Mishawaka –

Kellen Jojo(113), Deven Beaver(126), Preston Risner(132), Cameron

Kahlenback(138), Austin Faulkner(182), Jake Hess(220). Mish. Marian –

Jacob Dale(113), Nick Blasko(126), Patrick Ernst(220). Penn – Jarrett Selis

(126), Haden Hensley(132), Dustin Hochstetler(145), Will Vakahlani(195).

Plymouth – Aaron Milton(106), Bodie Neidig(152), Colton Schuler(170).

Rochester – Diego Newcombe(113), Josh Heckathorn(138), Otto Sherbondy

(152). South Bend Adams – Joey Zahl(106), Tarvis Evans(138). South Bend

Clay – Antwan White (106), Rishod Cotton(132), Mason Cao(182), James

Randolph(195). South Bend Riley – Cris McCormick(126) Jordy Garcia(182).

South Bend St. Joe – Jared Kazmierczak(106), Mike Koebel(285). South Bend

Washington – Tondrew Tyler(120). Tippy Valley – Garrett Bell(182). Triton

– Malachi Greene(106), Gage Waddle(160), John Salinas(182), Jeremy Jones

(195). Warsaw – Kameron Hile(126), Jeremy Lee(132), Spencer Gariess(160),

Anthony Penn(285). Wawasee – Ricardo Romo(106), Tristin Ponsler(126).

Logansport High school hosts the regional encompassing the west-

central part of the state. Last year this regional sent seven to the

state finals and three from that group return for 2016. Delphi’s

Hunter Mote leads the Logansport parade as a two-time state final-

ist. Mote has lost two narrow, one-point matches on Friday night

and is a likely medalist this year. Jon Anderson of Lafayette Jeff

wrestled outstandingly at semistate last year and finished second.

He ran into a hot Ty Mills on Friday, who ended his season. The

third returning state qualifier comes from the outskirts of Oxford,

Blake Strawsma. Strawsma also lost a tight match on Friday night

to Roncalli’s Nick Ellis.

The team race has traditionally been dominated by Harrison and

Delphi, but the real story has been the rise of West Lafayette. A

once moribund program has experienced a steady rise over the past

few seasons under coach Rick Roseman. Coach Tom Miller returns

one of his strongest groups in a while at Lafayette Jeff, and the as-

sumed full-time return of Mike Atwood should bolster Delphi. The

battle for the team title will be tough at Logansport in ‘16.

Top 5 Teams 1. Lafayette Jeff – The Bronchos appear to return their strong-

est team in recent memory and are the favorite at Logansport after

battling crosstown rival Harrison last season. Jon Anderson (106)

should start the season highly-ranked if he can hold that weight.

Middleweights Clay Jones (132) and Matt Grammer (138) were

semistaters last season and their senior classmates, Dustin Baldwin

(182) and Tanner Collins (195) joined the parade to Merrillville.

2. West Lafayette – Red Devil wrestling is on the rise on the

west side. Coach Roseman welcomes back a very strong senior

class with four semistate qualifiers. Charlie Randall (106) will hold

down one end of the lineup, while Dylan Trent (220) and Chris Kid-

well (195) will bolster the top end. Mike Kidwell (152) will be a

rock in the middle, as West Lafayette battles for regional hardware.

3. Delphi – The Oracles have some holes to fill but they return

five semistate qualifiers and should challenge for this regional. Sen-

iors Jonathan Ragan (126) and Hunter Mote (170) were both re-

gional champs in 2015. Both should be threats to qualify for State

in ’16. 4. Benton Central – The mean green should be able to chal-

lenge in this regional behind the senior strength of Blake Strawsma,

Cole Lukaska, and Kenneth Munson.

5. Lafayette Harrison – Coach VanDerAa’s team graduated a

tough senior class and will have to plug several holes. I would not

bet against the deepest team in this regional finishing higher than

fifth. Semistate qualifiers Jacob Wade (126) and Kirklan Conley

(195) will lead the rebuilding effort.

Top Individuals (Last Year's Weight) 1. Hunter Mote – 12 – (170) – Delphi – Mote has had an outstanding

career in the Oracle gold. He has piled up nearly 100 wins in his first three

seasons, and has punched his ticket twice to Bankers Life. The only thing

missing from his resume is a State medal.

2. Jon Anderson – 11 – (106) – Lafayette Jeff – In his fir st season in the

varsity lineup, Anderson put together an outstanding 47-3 record, a semis-

tate finals berth and a trip to Bankers Life.

3. Blake Strawsma – 12 – (132) – Benton Central – Par t of a powerful 1

-2 punch in the Bison line up, Strawsma earned his first trip to Indy last

year and has fashioned an impressive 106-24 record thus far in his career.

4. Cole Lukaska – 12 – (138) – Benton Central – The Strawsma-

Lukaska tag team have been wrestling back-to-back for three straight years.

This Bison is a two-time ticket-rounder who will no doubt be working hard

to earn his own trip to state.

5. Brady White – 12 – (120) – Rensselaer – White made a huge jump

and put together an outstanding 37-2 record in his junior year with the

Bombers, and was one match away from a trip to State.

6. Cody Widner– 12 – (138) – Twin Lakes – On the shores of Lake

Shafer, Widner has been a bedrock of solid wrestling for the Indians. He

has amassed well over 100 wins in his career on the mat.

7. Clay Jones – 11 – (132) – Jeff – Jones is one of a number of 30+ win-

ners in the Jeff lineup. This tough customer gave semistate champion Aus-

ten Laughlin all he wanted in the ticket round match.

8. Ryne Webb – 11 – (106) – Rennselaer – Webb is the second Bomber

in the top-ten, based on his ticket round appearance at Merrillville. He

continues a tradition of fine light weights at Rensselaer.

9. Dylan Trent – 12 – (220) – West Lafayette – Trent is one of the lead-

ers of a deep and experienced Red Devils lineup. A trip to the ticket round

should fuel the West Lafayette big man.

10. Kenneth Munson - 12 – (170) – Benton Central – Munson had a

nice win over Hammond Morton’s Andrew Key to get to the ticket round.

He is another Bison who will battle for a state berth.

Others to Watch Benton Central – Zane Yose (113), Conner Ade (160). Delphi – Ty Watson

(120), Dylan Hart (152), Garrett Clark (285. Harrison – Trey McCartney(106),

Josh Wade (106), Alyair Alvarez (132), Isaac Mathis (170). Lafayette Jeff –

Cooper Crum (145), Jordan Rogers (220). Lewis Cass – Noah Miller (106),

Tyler Cottingham (120), Drake Hall (138), Donivan Fale (160), Azarius Rob-

erts (195). Logansport – Donovan Johnson (113), Justin Porter (120), Jesse

Dominguez (126), Jose Salas (138), Kevin Gonzalez (160). McCutcheon –

Cole Garriott (132), Austin Morgan (138), Devin Moore (195). North Newton

– Harvey Davis (160). North White – Leevin Ball (113), Colton Cooley (126),

Austin Johns (285). Pioneer – Nick Price (170), Kevin Hines (285). Rensselaer

Central – Austin Warren (126). Rossville – Austin Erdman (126). South New-

ton - Damar i Embery (182). Twin Lakes – Kavyn Watts (106), Dakota

Deibel (132), Trevor Brown (195), Kyle Marshall (285). West Central – Kirk

Bushong (120). Bryce Shepperd (145), Jaxon Mayhew (152). West Lafayette –

Alex Fauber (113), Ean Lagerstrom (120), Jeffrey Cassell (138), Brendan

Adams (145). Winamac – Blaine Compton (113), Travis Werner (132),

Trevor Bitterling (195).

As always, this regional is solid from top to bottom, with almost

every team having at least a couple of State-level wrestlers. Elkhart

Memorial has won the last two regional titles, but could be pushed

by quite a few teams this year, including Prairie Heights, Jimtown

and Northwood.

On the individual side, there are six wrestlers returning with State

experience, with four of them finishing last year on the podium.

Returning state placers include Blake Glogouski, Tanner DeMien,

Nate Weimer, and David Eli. The talent is spread out among a

number of teams in the regional, as no team has more than one

returning State qualifier.

Top 5 Teams 1. Elkhart Memorial – Eight wrestlers with regional

experience return for Coach Brian Weaver’s squad this year,

including State placer David Eli. Other wrestlers the Chargers will

look to for points are brothers Christian and Marcus Mejia, Ronnie

Longbreak, and Nick Ritichie.

2. Prairie Heights – It might seem like the mid-1990’s,

with two Levitz brothers leading the Panthers once again. Coach

Brett Smith’s team has nine wrestlers that wrestled at regional or

beyond. Lead by State qualifier Doug Levitz and his younger, but

bigger brother Jed Levitz, the Panthers are a team to watch yet

again.

3. Jimtown – Three regional qualifiers and three semistate

qualifiers return for the Jimmies and Coach Mark Kerrn in 2016.

That list doesn’t include 2014 semistate qualifier Kenny Kerrn, who

was injured late last season. Look for the Jimmies to be solid from

top to bottom.

4. Northwood – There has been a youth movement in

Nappanee recently. Coach Damon Hummel has led a resurgence at

Northwood that included a state placer in Tanner DeMien last year.

Also look for ticket-rounders Garrett Griffin and Michael Leonard

to both have strong seasons.

5. East Noble – The Knights are going to have to fill some

big shoes this year with the departures of Garrett Pepple, Jake

Weimer, and Connor Knapp. One Weimer returns in State placer

Nate, along with semistaters Nick Babyak and Nathan Housholder.

If the young Knights fill in well, East Noble could be a sleeper pick

for a regional title.

Top Individuals (Last Year's Weight) 1. Blake Glogouski – 12 – (113) – Fairfield – The scrappy little guy

from New Paris has amassed a very good career, including a 5th place finish

in ‘15. He had a great offseason and could win it all.

2. Nate Weimer – 11 – (126) – East Noble – In Weimer ’s second tr ip to

State he came back with a medal. After a tough overtime loss in the quarter

-finals, he dropped to 8th place at 126lbs.

3. Tanner DeMien – 10 – (106) – Northwood – DeMien had one of the

bigger Friday night upsets last year when he defeated Cainan Schaefer by

pin. He went on to finish 7th and will be aiming for his second podium

finish in 2016.

4. David Eli – 11 – (182) – Elkhart Memorial – Eli wrapped up a very

good sophomore campaign with a 7th place finish. He has higher goals and

has the skills to vie for a gold medal this year.

5. Doug Levitz – 12 – (145) – Prairie Heights – Levitz has continued

one of the best bloodlines in Northeast Indiana with his first trip to State

last year. Look for more out of this tough Panther for his senior season.

6. Fernando Luevano – 10 – (132) – West Noble – Fernando had a very

good freshman season that culminated with a state appearance. He will be

back this year looking to for a state medal.

7. Nick Ritchie – 12 – (170) – Elkhart Memorial – Ritchie has come up

just short the past two years in the ticket round. This year should be

different, as the Charger should punch his ticket to State.

8. Derek Paz – 12 – (220) – Goshen – The lone host school wrestler in

the top-10, Paz was an eyelash from State last year. He beat some top guys

last year and will be a contender in 2016.

9. Marcus Meija – 12 - (120) – Elkhart Memorial – Mejia was a

regional champ last year, yet lost in heartbreaking fashion in the ticket

round. He hopes to lead a trio of Chargers to State this year.

10. Garrett Griffin – 11 – (152) – Northwood – Griffin’s stellar

sophomore season came to an end in the ticket round last year. He battled

with many of the top kids in his weight and will look to take the next step

this year.

Carroll has dominated their regional since the loss of team State

and this year looks to be no different. The Super Chargers return

two State qualifiers in Kobe Raypole and Josh Garman to anchor

another tough team. Leo will look to knock them off with new head

coach Rod Williams and state-placer Isaac Eicher.

Wayne’s Geoffrey Davis is the highest returning placer after

finishing 4th last year. Hunter Langeloh of Columbia City and Isaac

Eicher also have State medals from this regional. Six others stepped

on the Bankers Life Fieldhouse mats last year, but were denied a

state medal.

Carroll and Leo will be the projected top teams, but don’t look past

teams like Columbia City, Homestead, and New Haven. All of those

teams return a State qualifier and a host of semistate and regional

qualifiers comprising great supporting casts.

Top 5 Teams

1. Carroll – Coach Scott Raypole’s Chargers have been very

consistent over the past four years, with the 2016 team looking to

be more of the same. Seven semistate qualifiers return, including

State qualifiers Josh Garman and Kobe Raypole. However, this

team will need to fill in some spots left open by some very talented

outgoing seniors.

2. Leo – New head coach Rod Williams will be looking to make

an immediate impact in the Lions’ den. The King of the Jungle for

Leo is returning 7th place finisher Isaac Eicher. Leo will also get

production from semistate qualifiers Kyle Davis, Dane Martin, and

Chase Hissong.

3. Columbia City – Former Eagle standout Blane Culp has

steadily improved his alma mater, culminating with last year’s

breakthrough, qualifying three wrestlers for State. However, only

one of them return and he will need to help fill some big holes.

Hunter Langeloh will need help from classmates Nathanial Smith

and Cross Dietrich.

4. Homestead – The Spartans’ small, but mighty crew came

away with two regional championships last year, along with another

runner-up. All three return with their eyes on the State finals. Coach

Nathan DeVaux will look to seniors Jack Franklin, Drake Rhodes,

and Wyatt Clem this year.

5. New Haven – The Bulldogs are looking to build around

State qualifier Owen Doster this year. Coach James Linn has a

young squad that returns regional champion Nick Potter and

regional qualifier Austin Amstutz.

Top Individuals (Last Year's Weight) 1. Geoffrey Davis – 12 – (106) – Fort Wayne Wayne – Davis made quite

an impact last year and flew under many people’s radar all season long.

After a back and forth rivalry with fellow SAC little guy Ben Streeter,

Davis finished 4th at the State finals.

2. Isaac Eicher – 12 – (138) – Leo – Eicther made his fir st tr ip to State

a memorable one, bringing home a 7th place medal. This year he will aim

higher, as he has the talent to mix it up with the best.

3. Hunter Langeloh – 12 – (120) – Columbia City – After a 7th place

finish as a sophomore, Langeloh has followed it up with another trip to

State last year. He is an extremely dangerous wrestler that will keep the

best wrestlers on their toes.

4. Josh Garman – 12 – (152) – Carroll – After his second str aight

regional title, Garman punched his ticket to State as a junior. He will look

to cap his career off with a spot on the podium.

5. Owen Doster – 12 – (126) – New Haven – After an injury-shortened

sophomore season, last year Doster made his way to the State finals. This

Bulldog will look to join a long list of State placers this year.

6. Zach Davis – 12 – (170) – Concordia – Davis was another surpr ise

State qualifier last year out of the Carroll Regional. He was undefeated

going into the semistate semi-finals, and will look to build upon a nice

junior season.

7. Ben Streeter – 12 – (106) – Fort Wayne North Side – Streeter capped

his junior year with a trip to State. He was an overtime takedown away

from bringing home a medal.

8. Blake Davis – 12 – (220) – Garrett – The mighty Railroader Davis

will look to follow in his brother’s success this year. He punched his ticket

to State last year and now looks to bring a medal back to Garrett.

9. Kobe Raypole – 12 - (126) – Carroll – Raypole punched his ticket to

State the hard way, after a 3rd place regional performance. He has had a

good offseason and will use that to springboard his senior year.

10. Drake Rhodes – 12 – (126) – Homestead– Rhodes probably had the

most deceiving record in the state last year with 14 losses. Most of those

were to State qualifiers, as his conference had four State qualifiers in his

weight.

Oak Hill captured their first regional championship last year after

dethroning the host Tigers. On their way to the championship, they

qualified 10 wrestlers for semistate. The 2016 version of the Golden

Eagles will bring seven semistate qualifiers back and make them

the favorites for another regional title.

On the individual side, this regional has been steadily producing

State-level wrestlers. Five wrestlers return who have visited

Bankers Life Fieldhouse, with state placer Evan Ellis of Eastern

leading the way. Others to watch include State qualifiers Jabin

Wright of Kokomo, Jordan Rader and Peyton Sturgill of Peru, and

2014 State qualifier Owen Perkins of Oak Hill.

Top 5 Teams

1. Oak Hill – Coach Andrew King has seen a surge in the

Golden Eagles’ production the last couple of years. This year they

return seven wrestlers with semistate experience along with one

other regional qualifier. Owen Perkins qualified for State in 2015

and the others to watch include Travis Davenport, Zach Gunter, and

Brody Hardcastle.

2. Peru – The host Tigers were not thrilled when their bid for a

three-peat at regional was upended by Oak Hill. This year’s squad

will return ten regional qualifiers, with four of them having

semistate experience. The Andy Hobbs-led team will be paced by

State qualifiers Peyton Sturgill and Jordan Rader, along with Erik

Hobbs.

3. Kokomo – Coach Ryan Wells has done an outstanding job

with the Wildcats and it looks as if they are poised to have another

good run. Leading the way is State qualifier Jabin Wright, as well as

semistate qualifiers Szhantrayle Roberson, DaShaun Barbary, Nick

Fox, and Gavin Herrera. Coach Wells only loses two seniors and

will be one to watch in Peru.

4. Western – Chad Shepherd always produces top talent in

Russiaville, but the 2016 team will need to replace State runner-up

Corey Hinkle. Look for them to lean heavily on the Lechner

brothers, Payton (106) and Tyler (113), in the lower weights, along

with big Dante Graham at the other end.

5. North Miami – The boys from Denver…Indiana, not

Colorado, have consistently been improving under coach Byron

Sweet. This year could be a breakout year, with nine starters

returning and four of them with regional experience. Kasey

Deardorff, Wyatt Dyson, and Lane Eckrote each made their way to

the Coliseum last year, and look to add another week to their

seasons in 2016.

Top Individuals (Last Year's Weight) 1. Evan Ellis – 11 – (220) – Eastern – An 8th place medalist last year, his

offseason was filled with many national level events that included many

placements. A true title contender in 2016.

2. Jordan Rader – 10 – (160) – Peru – As a freshman, Rader made his

way to State in 2015. He has all the tools to be a force to be reckoned with

in the upper weights for quite a while.

3. Peyton Sturgill – 12 – (152) – Peru – Sturgill is the prototypical Peru

wrestler: a nasty spiral ride on top, and stout offense on his feet. Last year,

he made it to State and seeks a placement in 2016

4. Jabin Wright – 11 – (113) – Kokomo – Wright caught fire at the

right time, winning regionals and making his way to State. He has can go

one step further, as he will be a favorite to add a semistate crown in ‘16.

5. Owen Perkins – 11 – (285) – Oak Hill – Perkins came out of nowhere

as a freshman to qualify for State. Last year, however, saw his season end

at the Coliseum. Look for a return to BLF.

6. Luke Elliot – 12 – (170) – Eastbrook – Elliott captured sectional and

regional titles last year, only to see his season end with a one-point loss in

the ticket round.

7. Chad Elmore – 12 – (120) – Taylor – Elmore led a resurgence in the

Taylor program, capturing a regional title before he was upended in the

ticket round. He will look to build upon his 40-win season in 2015 with one

additional win, to secure a spot at State.

8. Zach Gunter – 12 – (126) – Oak Hill – Gunter captured his fir st

regional title last year for the Golden Eagles. He has the ability to make his

fourth trip to semistate the one that gets him to State.

9. Brody Hardcastle – 11 - (145) – Oak Hill – The third Golden Eagle

on the list and, like the other two, his season ended in the ticket round. He

also made it to semistate as a freshman, which could lead to his third trip

being the charm.

10. Lane Eckrote – 12 – (195) – North Miami – A regional champ last

year, he was upended in the first round at semistate. With a lot of

graduation at this weight, he could punch his ticket to the State finals as a

senior.

The stranglehold that both Bellmont and Yorktown have had on

this regional may be in jeopardy, with the youthful Delta Eagles

breathing down their backs. Yorktown has been the class of this

regional, but a strong senior class and other top wrestlers defecting

will leave this regional a tough one to predict.

Bellmont will return ten regional participants, four of whom have

wrestled at Banker’s Life Fieldhouse. Coach McCormick’s Tigers

will have some big shoes to fill with only 103 of their 232.5

regional points coming back this year. Delta will be the team to

keep an eye on, as all 14 starters return, with three of them

returning state qualifiers.

On the individual side, you will see a lot of quality wrestlers on the

mat once again at this regional. Delta’s Sage Coy placed 3rd last

year, and teammate Jacob Gray earned a 6th place finish. Other

returning placers include Yorktown’s Brad Laughlin and Christian

Hunt, along with 2013 and 2014 State placer Cael McCormick.

Top 5 Teams

1. Bellmont – After the graduation of the Yorktown seniors,

the Braves’ faithful have been licking their chops to get their first

regional crown since 2012. Coach Paul Gunsett is set to take over

the program, after he and BJ Faurote traded positions in the

offseason. The Braves will have a full cupboard with state qualifiers

Bryce Baumgartner, Daniel Gunsett, Jon Becker (2014), and Carter

Friedt returning.

2. Yorktown – Eyes across the state and locally will be

watching the Tigers this season. They return three wrestlers with

appearances on the podium, but past those three there are many

question marks. Brad Laughlin and Christian Hunt brought home

5th and 6th place medals respectively, while Cael McCormick has

two state medals from 2013 and 2014.

3. Delta – Could Delta be back on the rise? Three State

qualifiers, including two semistate champions, return in 2014. With

those three leading the way, 11 additional starters from 2015 all

return. Sage Coy and Jacob Gray both brought home State medals

last year, with Scottie Evans also making his first State appearance.

4. Adams Central – The BAGUBAs are a staple in the top

five of this regional. Coach Tony Currie took two Flyin’ Jets to

Bankers Life Fieldhouse last year, with one, Anthony Mosser,

returning for his junior season. Also returning are three other

semistate qualifiers.

5. Jay County – It is not taking long for Coach Eric Myers

to bring the Patriots to the top of this regional. Last year, they were

led by State qualifier Andy Kohler at 182lbs. Kohler returns, along

with two other semistate qualifiers and six regional qualifiers.

Top Individuals (Last Year's Weight) 1. Sage Coy – 12 – (132) – Delta – Coy’s first State tournament ended

with a bronze medal at 132lbs. He is an extremely dangerous wrestler that

would rather “throw you than know you.”

2. Brad Laughlin – 11 – (138) – Yorktown– Laughlin is the top

returning Yorkie after a 5th place finish at 138lbs. He will make a jump of

over 20lbs this year with hopes that it will pay off with an even better finish

at Banker’s Life.

3. Jacob Gray – 11 – (160) – Delta – Another young Eagle grappler that

made his first trip to State pay off by placing 6th at 160lbs. He had a great

offseason, which included podium finishes at USAW Folkstyle and Greco

nationals.

4. Christian Hunt – 10 – (106) – Yorktown – Hunt punched his ticket to

State last year and came away with a 6th place medal. He is another very

tough Tiger wrestler that has his eyes on a gold medal.

5. Cael McCormick – 12 – (145) – Yorktown – McCormick won a

semistate last year, but was upset Friday night. A recent Army commit, he

looks to end his senior season with his 3rd State medal.

6. Scottie Evans – 12 – (195) – Delta – Evans is the third Delta grappler

that made it to State last year. His Friday night ended early, but he will be

back as a semistate and state medal favorite.

7. Bryce Baumgartner – 11 – (160) – Bellmont – Bryce has made it to

State two straight years, but last year was cut short with injury. He hopes to

end a 3-year drought of Braves on the podium.

8. Anthony Mosser – 11 – (113) – Adams Central – Mosser had a

breakout season with a surprise appearance at the State finals. This year he

will come in with a target on his back.

9. Andy Kohler – 12 - (182) – Jay County – Kohler punched his ticket

to the State finals last year at 182lbs. With a good offseason, he will come

in as one to watch at this weight.

10. Daniel Gunsett – 12 – (126) – Bellmont – Gunsett qualified for State

at 126lbs. He has the pedigree and skills to make another deep run resulting

in a podium finish.

Hamilton Southeastern and Lebanon battled tooth and nail in 2015,

with the Royals ultimately coming out on top by a mere 6 points.

However, both schools were hit pretty hard by graduation, meaning

lesser known wrestlers will have to step up in a fairly wide open

regional. The pick here is Carmel, on the basis of 6 returning

semistate qualifiers and the always heady coaching of Ed Pendoski.

Don’t sleep on HSE, as the Royals boast three returning state

qualifiers, including 4th place finisher Austin Holmes. Southmont

has three or four returning athletes who could make some serious

noise at Banker’s Life Fieldhouse this season, and are a threat to

win this regional outright. Look for Lebanon, Westfield and

Zionsville to fight it out for 4th through 6th.

Individually, HSE’s terrific trio, along with Lebanon’s and

Southmont’s dynamic duos, lead a solid group that features three

returning state placers and more than ten returning state qualifiers.

Look for Holmes and Anderson to be in the mix of the elite at their

weights. Eldred, Hipple, Moore and Fuller all likely face weights

with mortal locks at the top, but each should place at State this

season.

Top 5 Teams

1. Carmel – Coach Pendoski took a ton of his young men to

New Castle last year, which should yield results for this year’s team.

Led by 4th place finisher Sam Hipple, the ‘Hounds boast a ton of

quality depth. Aside from Hipple, Adam Jerde (113) and Nick Fox

(160) were ticket-rounders, while Jack Eiteljorge (120), Jerrod Smith

(138) and HWT Deshawn Williams were all semistate qualifiers.

Carmel wrestlers will not beat themselves and are solid in all phases.

2. Hamilton Southeastern – Despite losing some State-

level talent, Coach Poyer’s Royals are still very explosive. Austin

Holmes leads the team and the regional, as he has dreams of wrestling

under the lights dancing through his head. Look for Anderson to

redeem himself this year. Irick and Kolby Ferris (195) provide upper-

weight strength.

3. Southmont – The Mounties are a team on the cusp of a big

postseason run. Led by stud seniors Zach Worm, Alex Grino (106) and

Connor Moore, as well as standout junior Boone Welliever (126),

Coach Kevin Wilkinson has a complete, talented team.

4. Westfield – Coach Terry O’Neil’s Shamrocks seem to reload

every year, without any significant drop off. There’s no reason to

expect a dip this year, either, with 5th place finisher and Fargo cadet All

-American Evan Eldred pacing the team. Junior Reid Hutson (113),

seniors Zachary Steele (126) and Nick Schaeffer (195) were SS

qualifiers in 2015, and there are a slew of regional qualifier returning.

5. Zionsville – Zionsville’s new coach, Jared Williams, enters a

solid situation. State qualifier Fuller, semistate qualifiers Jack Banks

(160) and Azariah Ellis (113) provide the backbone of a very solid

Eagles bunch.

Top Individuals (Last Year's Weight) 1. Austin Holmes – 12 – (113) – HSE – A two-time 4th place State finisher,

Holmes is capable of capturing gold as a senior. He and Anderson push each

other and are one of the top 1-2 lower weight punches in the entire state.

2. Evan Eldred – 12 – (132) –Westfield – The slick ‘Rock had to beat a

semistate champ at BLF last year, but the Fargo AA was up to the task. He

has the misfortune of likely landing in a Red or Lee weight class, but he’s a

strong bet for a high podium finish.

3. Sam Hipple – 12 – (195) – Carmel – Hipple really turned it on at

State last year, winding up an impressive 4th in a senior-laden weight class.

He’s shown that he can go with about anyone.

4. Klayton Anderson – 10 – (106) –HSE – Anderson dominated all year

until late in the postseason. He has a great frame and should place high this

year. Don’t bet on a repeat of 2015.

5. Evan Stambaugh – 11 - (160) – Lebanon – Lebanon’s tough junior

qualified for State in a ‘big’ weight class last year, where he ran into the

Drew Hughes buzzsaw. He should be someone else’s Friday night buzzsaw

this year. Expect big things from Stambaugh.

6. Connor Moore – 12 – (138) – Southmont – The Mounties senior

qualified for State last year, only to draw Joe Lee on Friday. Barring another

Lee encounter, he should step on to the podium.

7. Zach Worm – 12 – (170) – Southmont – Worm was part of a deep,

tough 170 group at regionals and semistate. He proved his mettle by

qualifying for State in a tough pool. He’s very long and a tough matchup for

many opponents.

8. Spencer Irick – 12 – (170) – HSE – Ir ick has shown steady

improvement each season, like his older brother Matt, an IU wrestler. With

that in mind, the next logical step a state placement.

9. Scott Fuller – 12 – (195) – Zionsville – The Eagles’ big man needs to

set himself up with a better State draw this year, which he can and should

do. He’s a darkhorse to pull a deep State run.

10. Caleb Bocock – 12 – (120) – Lebanon – A 2-time State qualifier,

Bocock was close to placing last year, losing a squeaker on Friday night. ‘16

should bring the coach’s son a medal.

Cathedral almost had the horses to knock off Penn at State, falling

just short and finishing an impressive 2nd. Lawrence North beat

Cathedral at this regional last year, but managed only a 14th place

finish at Banker’s Life. This year should come down to the two

powerhouses yet again and, in fact, the talent level drops a bit after

these two teams. Cathedral has the higher-end talent, but Lawrence

North can absolutely repeat their regional title if some of their

better wrestlers can avoid the upset bug they caught at New Castle.

In terms of individual talent, the cupboard is far from bare on the

northeast side of Indy. The Irish have nationally-ranked monster

and defending State champion Blake Rypel, as well as two-time

medalist Breyden Bailey, who will be going hard after a State title

this year. Throw in returning state-placers Ryan Guhl and Zach

Melloh, as well as a host of semistate and regional qualifiers, and

you have the recipe for another Irish juggernaut. The Wildcats

counter with the slick Cam Jones, state qualifier Robert Samuels,

and a deep, very solid supporting cast. It’s difficult to tell who will

follow the two regional giants this year.

Top 5 Teams

1. Cathedral – Coach McGinley has to be disappointed to

lose Skylour Turner to Warren, but he has plenty to work with in

this deep Irish squad. While Rypel, Bailey, Melloh and Guhl have

already made their marks at Banker’s Life, look for guys like the

Stewarts, Dylan and Ben, and freshman 106 Jordan Slivka to make

deep runs in the postseason. The Irish are a likely top-5 team.

2. Lawrence North – Lacking the huge guns of Cathedral,

instead Coach Seitzer’s Wildcats have a deep and scrappy team, led

by Cameron Jones, the Samuels brothers, Carrender and Isaac

Castro (120). They are deep, they wrestle a monstrous schedule and

they are very dangerous.

3. North Central – The Panthers don’t have any home run

hitters, but senior Derrick Motley (145) was a regional champion in

2015. Walter Haire (195), Todd Hertenstein (170) and Liam Hobson

(106) were semistate qualifiers as well for Coach Silverman.

4. Hamilton Heights – This looks like it could be the year

Heights gets past Noblesville for a sectional crown. Coach Gary

Myers’ Huskies are led by the following semistate qualifiers:

juniors Clayton Cowan (145) and Riley White (138), plus talented

senior Trezdon ONeal (126).

5. Noblesville – The Millers lost some of their biggest guns

to graduation, forcing Coach Knotts to rebuild a bit. Led by junior

semistate qualifiers David Kitko (132) and Mateo Barrantes (113),

Noblesville will still be gunning for yet another sectional title.

Top Individuals (Last Year's Weight) 1. Blake Rypel – 12 – (195) – Cathedral – Rypel is a technical machine,

and he’s a hair away from being a two-time champ already. He’s top-10 in

the US and should earn another title in ’16.

2. Breyden Bailey – 11 – (120) – Cathedral – The two-time place-winner

wasn’t satisfied with his bronze finish in 2015. Look for Bailey under the

lights this season.

3. Zach Melloh – 10 – (126) – Cathedral – Another weight, another

Irish standout. Melloh advanced to State through an absolutely cruel

semistate draw. He followed that up with a semis appearance at State and a

4th place final finish.

4. Cam Jones – 12 – (170) – Lawrence North – Jones had some epic

matches with Ben Harvey, but I’m sure he won’t miss him this year. Look

for a deep State run for the tough LN senior.

5. Ryan Guhl – 12 – (220) – Cathedral – The Ir ish standout isn’t flashy,

but he’ll give you a good beating with his heavy hands. Expect the gritty

senior to become a two-time State placer in ’16.

6. Dru Berkebile – 10 – (152) – Frankton – Berkebile placed 5th as a

freshman at 152lbs last year. He will certainly contend for a state

championship or two before it is all said and done.

7. Robert Samuels – 11 – (285) – Lawrence North – Samuels the

Younger is dropping down from heavyweight, which should play into his

strengths. He is very, very long and deceptively strong.

8. Nick Smith – 12 – (132) – Lawrence North – Smith came into

semistate as a top-seed, only to see the lights courtesy of the Southside

Strangler, Nick Ellis. He is capable of a nice State run.

9. Ben Stewart – 11 – (182) – Cathedral – Stewar t keeps drawing nasty

New Castle matches, dropping a 3-1 ticket rounder to Mason Parris. Yeah,

he’s pretty tough. A state placement isn’t a stretch.

10. Ricky Samuels – 12 - (182) – Lawrence North – The elder, smaller

Samuels was a ticket-rounder as a junior and will attempt to take the next

step up the ladder—a State qualification.

What a huge, tumultuous year for this regional. In one of the

bigger offseason coaching moves in recent years, long time Perry

boss Jim Tonte took his skills (and his tough son Tristen) to Warren

Central. Last year, Perry edged Warren in the regional team race,

but ‘16 should be a different story.

Both Perry and Warren, along with New Palestine, have produced

some of Central Indiana’s (and the entire state’s, for that matter)

best wrestlers in recent years. This year will be no different. In

Warren’s case, the cupboard is embarrassingly full. Tonte picked a

very opportune time to head to the east side of Indy. The Warriors

only big loss is Courvousier Morrow from last year’s loaded, ultra-

dangerous team. Oh, and in a classic case of the rich getting richer,

Warren will employ the services of former Cathedral standout

Skylour Turner. This is a state title-caliber team and should win

even this brutal regional with ease, barring injury. While Perry still

has a nice group, as always, they were hit much harder by

graduation and defection. New Palestine has the best wrestler in the

state and one of the very best in the country in Chad Red Jr, but he’s

far from the only hammer in the lineup.

By my unofficial count, there are at least 17 former state qualifiers

in this regional, along with 8 returning placers, including a champ

and runner-up. This is a brutal regional.

Top 5 Teams

1. Warren Central – Coach Tonte doesn’t have to do the

program-building he’s done in the past. Instead, he inherits what

could be one of the best teams in the area in recent years. There are

qualifiers and potential qualifiers at seemingly every weight, led by

returning runner-up Tonte (195) and placers Turner (113) and Trent

Pruitt (145).

2. Perry Meridian – While it’s always a loss when

someone of Tonte’s stature leaves a program, don’t feel too sorry

for Coach Schoettle. As usual, there are standouts aplenty in the PM

lineup, led by Noah Warren (145), Brett Johnson (152) and Chris

Ridle (285).

3. New Palestine – The Dragons, led by Coach Red, would

dominate a number of other regionals year in and out, but there’s no

doubt that steel sharpens steel, so it’s not all bad. 3-time champ CJ

Red (126), returning placer Cam Diep (106), former placer Alec

White (113) and former qualifier Jared Timberman (138) lead a

talented squad.

4. Franklin Central – The Flashes are led by returning

state runner-up Jordan Vaughn, who caught fire last postseason and

never looked back. (2) semistate qualifiers & (4) regional qualifiers

join the mix for Coach Fox.

5. Roncalli – The Ellis men, Coach Lance & returning placer

Nick (132), lead the Rebels. Two additional semistate qualifiers and

a regional qualifier lend depth.

Top Individuals (Last Year's Weight) 1. Chad Red – 12 – (126) – New Palestine – Red has put up a resume

that ranks him among Indiana’s all-time greats. He is among a handful of

the very best young wrestlers in the country.

2. Tristen Tonte – 11 – (195) – Warren Central – Tonte has a knack of

pulling out tight matches, and did just that last year en route to a runner-up

finish. He’ll be among the favorites for gold.

3. Jordan Vaughn – 12 – (132) – Franklin Central – Vaughn broke out

of an evenly matched pack at 132 to rocket into the ‘15 title match. He may

have the misfortune of being in another ‘locked’ weight this year.

4. Skylour Turner – 11 – (113) – Warren Central – A 2-time placer

already, the only hurdle left for the junior is a higher finish.

5. Trent Pruitt – 12 – (145) – Warren Central – The Warr ior was hot at

BLF last season, finishing an impressive 5th. There’s no reason he can’t

improve on that finish in 2016.

6. Nick Ellis – 12 – (132) – Roncalli – Beware the Ellis headlock!

Apparently, it’s genetic. Ellis tossed top-seed Nick Smith of LN to qualify

for State, and followed that up with a place finish.

7. Dominick Herrick – 12 – (152) – Warren Central – Despite double

digit losses, Herrick was battle-tested and ready at State, finishing 8th. He

beat a one-loss Derek Noon to advance to BLF.

8. Cameron Diep – 12 – (106) –New Palestine – Diep was the lone New

Castle 106er to place last season. A move up weight will provide new

challenges, but he and White make each other better.

9. Alec White – 11 - (113) – New Palestine – A tough Fr iday night loss

to Glogouski meant no repeat placement for White, but he should rebound

in a big way in 2016.

10. Jasion Brogan – 12 – (285) –Warren Central– Like White, Brogan

lost a very tough Friday night match, to Quinn York of Franklin in OT. He

should place well this season.

New Castle continued their climb back to the top of the regional

ladder last season, placing second to South Dearborn. The same

two teams should battle for the crown in 2016. Veteran skipper Rex

Peckinpaugh might just have the horses to get it done this season.

George Gardner’s South Dearborn Knights comfortably won the

title last year and his two big guns, Cainan Schaefer (106) and

Nathan Boggs (138), return to both defend their individual and team

regional crowns.

This regional also produced some excellent individual results at

the state meet in 2015. Richmond’s State runner up Nathan

Trawick has graduated, but two of the best underclassmen in the

state return in Lawrenceburg’s Mason Parris (3rd at 182) and

Richmond’s Alston Bane (3rd at 145). Schaefer and Jake Ruberg

from Lawrenceburg also have excellent shots at earning a state

medal.

Top 5 Teams 1. New Castle – The Trojans have had a stranglehold on their

sectional longer than most wrestling coaches have been alive. In

2015, they won their 10th straight sectional, and with 9 regional and

7 semistate qualifiers returning for ’16, they should easily get their

11th in a row. State-streeter Caleb Hoots (182), along with ticket

round wrestlers Trevor Ragle (113) and Sam Buck (132) will lead

the New Castle squad.

2. South Dearborn – The Knights are the defending regional

champs, and they return enough strength to repeat in 2016.

Schaefer (106) and Boggs (138) are the headliners but four other

semi-staters also return with seniors McKelti Espedilla (152), Dylan

Neff (220), and Sam Smith (285), as well as sophomore Garrett

Walton (113).

3. Franklin County – Coach Doug Deters’ Wildcats finished

third in this regional last year and have a nice core of wrestlers

returning this season. Semistate qualifiers Steve Browning (120),

Brandon Grubb (170), and Tyler Selm (285) join ticket-rounder

Johnny Loos (126) as front-liners for Franklin County.

4. Lawrenceburg – Tucked in the southeast corner of the state,

Lawrenceburg is often forgotten by the rest of the state, but this was

not the case in 2015 when superfrosh Mason Parris wowed the

Banker’s Life wrestling crowd, barely losing to eventual state

champ Chase Osborn. The return of 2014 state finalist Jake Ruberg

and semistate ticket rounder Charlie Hall (152) make Lawrenceburg

a strong tournament threat.

5. East Central – East Central does not have the top-end talent

to compete for regional hardware but they do have excellent depth,

with 7 regional and 3 semistate qualifiers returning to the Trojans’

ranks. Semistaters include Gabe Lane (132), and ticket-rounders

Andrew Negangard (138) and Dario Guintini (195).

Top Individuals (Last Year's Weight) 1. Mason Parris – 10 – (182) – Lawrenceburg – Parr is was probably

the top freshman in the state last season. His 54-1 record and 3rd place

medal attest to his talent level.

2. Alston Bane – 11 (145) – Richmond – Bane was the author of one of

the biggest upsets at State when he knocked of 2-time medalist and

semistate champ Cael McCormick. The Red Devil used this momentum to

ride to a 3rd place medal.

3. Cainan Schaefer – 11 – (106) – South Dearborn – Schaefer was the

victim of a big Friday night upset after dominating in the regional and

semistate. He will be thirsty for a medal in 2016.

4. Jake Ruberg – 11 – (138) – Lawrenceburg – Ruberg was a 2014 state

qualifier who battled two-time state champ Tommy Cash, losing 2-1. His

return from injury will strengthen the Tigers.

5. Isaiah Michaels– 12 – (152) – Centerville – Michaels par layed a nice

win over Perry Meridian’s Brett Johnson into a trip to the State finals. He

will battle for State hardware in ’16.

6. Caleb Hoots – 12 – (182) – New Castle – Hoots had a fine campaign

his junior season, piling up 45 wins and a State finals appearance where he

unfortunately drew the state champ on Friday.

7. Nathan Boggs – 12 – (138) – South Dearborn – Boggs has been a

hammer in the Knights lineup since his freshman year, but has yet to make

that elusive trip to State.

8. Trevor Ragle – 10 – (113) – New Castle – Ragle made a nice run to

the ticket round in his rookie season and has a regional on his resume.

Look for bigger and better from this talented Trojan.

9. Johnny Loos – 12 – (126) – Franklin County – Loos was another

regional titlist who fell one match short of a State finals trip. It was only

the second loss of a fine junior season.

10. Charlie Hall – 12 – (152) – Lawrenceburg – The third Tiger in the

top ten, Hill is a regional champion and ticket-rounder. He could be one of

multiple state finalists from the ‘Burg.

Others to Watch Batesville – Jackson Wooldridge (120), John Moody (126). Blue River Valley –

The Mooresville regional can stake a claim as the strongest in the entire

state this year, even though traditional powerhouse Franklin does not ap-

pear to be as strong as they have been in recent seasons. Always a strong

regional, the emergence of Avon and Brownsburg as state powers have

thrust this grouping into the elite status. An amazing eleven state-placers

and nineteen total state-streeters return to their respective teams. Not only

does this regional have top-end talent, but the depth of talent is quite im-

pressive.

Avon is the defending regional and semistate champion, and reportedly

has a very strong freshman class to add to an already strong returning

lineup. The Orioles should receive a stiff challenge from the boys in purple

just seven miles up the road. The Bulldogs of Brownsburg have their

strongest team in school history. Both Avon and Brownsburg will probably

be ranked in the top-ten in the state.

Top 5 Teams

1. Brownsburg – Are the Bulldogs ready to take their place

among the state’s elite? That question will likely be answered this

season as Brownsburg returns a loaded lineup behind fourth-year

coach Darrick Snyder. State runner-up Ty Mills (106), 8th place

finisher Nathan Walton (170) and the impressive Brayton Lee (132)

make up the core, and all three are only sophomores. Nick Weaver

(113), Blake Mulkey (120), Troy Owen (145), and Isaac McCor-

mick (195) are a nice second line.

2. Avon – The Black and Gold had one of their school’s finest

seasons in 2015, winning the semistate in a tie-breaking procedure

over Evansville Mater Dei. Juniors Jacob Skaggs (8th) and Gunner

Larson (5th) return with state medals and soph Mason Miranda

(106) was a qualifier. Juniors Jacob Clark (132) and Brett Henson

(285) have semistate experience. Israel Blevins is building a pow-

erhouse on the west side.

3. Center Grove – The Trojans won their first sectional title

since 2007 last winter, and appear to have enough to earn back-to-

back trophies. Last season, frosh Gleason Mappes (152), made an

improbable run to the state finals after a regular season barely

above .500. Fellow soph Jonah Hays (160), junior Logan Coyle,

(145) and senior Zak Siddiqui (106) also made runs to the Evans-

ville semistate.

4. Martinsville – The Artesians, mentored by Dave Contre-

ras, also have one of their stronger teams in memory returning for

2016. Led by 7th place finisher Cayden Whitaker(152), along with

state qualifier Clayton Scroggs (220) and ticket-rounder Ethan

Runyan, Martinsville will be a team to reckon with.

5. Franklin – The Grizzly Cubs continue to rebuild and will

do so around the talents of HWT state-placer Quinn York (6th) as

well as semistate qualifiers Trevor Reese (126), and Shane Wilker-

son (138).

Top Individuals (Last Year's Weight) 1. Brock Hudkins -12 – (120) – Danville – This lil’ warr ior won his first

state title and has a career record of 98-3. He is clearly one of the top talents in

the state and ranked 19th in the country.

2. Elliot Malloy – 12 – (126) – Danville – Hudkins’ long-time practice partner

has been Malloy and his resume is nearly as impressive. A 117-7 career record

and 3rd place medal makes him a title threat in ’16.

3. TJ Mills – 10 – (106) – Brownsburg – Going into state finals weekend,

few would have predicted Mills to wrestle under the lights but that is exactly

what he did. What will he do for an encore?

4. Elijah Dunn – 12 – (152) – Indian Creek – Dunn made as big as jump as

anyone in the state, improving from semistate qualifier to 4th place medalist.

Another bump like that could put him atop the podium in 2016.

5. Brayton Lee – 10 – (132) – Brownsburg – Lee went into the Evansville

semistate as the 2nd ranked wrestler in the state, with impressive wins over vet-

erans Conner Knapp and Jack Chastain. A shocking win by Austin Bethel rude-

ly ended his freshman season.

6. Bryce Biddle – 11 – (285) – Plainfield – The Quaker big man made a run

to the semis in his sophomore season, placing 4th. He is an early frontrunner for

a state title in 2017.

7. Gunner Larson – 11 – (220) – Avon – Larson continues the tr adition of

outstanding Avon upper weights. Two trips to State and a 5th place medal mean

the sky is the limit in his remaining two years.

8. Kyle Shaffer – 11 – (182) – South Putnam – Shaffer is another example

of a wrestler who made a big jump. 6th place as a sophomore could mean a

state title might be in Shaffer’s future.

9. Quinn York – 12 – (285) – Franklin – York has developed a nice r ivalry

with Biddle the past couple of seasons and it drove him to a 6th place finish at

State.

10. Cayden Whitaker – 12 – (152) – Martinsville – Whitaker is the top dog

in the Martinsville room after finishing 7th in the state. The senior will lead a

strong Artesian team this year.

11. Jacob Skaggs – 11 – (113) – Avon – Skaggs made the most of his first

season in the Orioles lineup, defeating Rickie Rodriguez on Friday night and

giving Austin Holmes a great battle. Skaggs was pretty dinged up and settled

for an 8th place medal.

12. Nathan Walton – 10 – (170) – Brownsburg – Walton was a surpr ise

medalist for the Bulldogs in his freshman season. Big things are on the horizon

for both Walton and Brownsburg.

Others to Watch Avon – Timi Osho (195). Ben Davis – James Pritchett (120), Jaylen Roth (132),

Brady Johnson (145), Kasha Wilder (220). Brownsburg – Conner Allen (126), Arkee

Glover (160), Reilly Peterson (220). Cascade – Thomas Long (138). Center Grove

– Ethan Duke (120), Conner Noble (138), Rhett Mappes (170), Cory Heinrichs

(220). Cloverdale – Nick Blundell (152). Danville – Bryce King (138), Jace

Heitkamp (152), Kameron Caudle (195). Decatur Central – Kadin Poe (113), Dylan Dearing (132), Jaylen Adkins (138). Franklin – Burk Van Horn (152). Greencastle –

Keaton Boswell (106), Trea Carrington (132), Andrew Ruiz (170). Greenwood –

Keegan Overton (113), Tyler Futrell (120), Gavin Fuqua (285). Indian Creek – Tony Mosconi (106), Brad Trietsch (126), Nick Clevenger (285). Martinsville – Keaton

Fisher (113), Jeremy Vaught (126), Cody Drake (138). Monrovia – Brycen Denny (106), Eli Stock (160), Camryn Smith (170), Ivan Wray (182), Garrison Lee (195),

Dristan McCubbins (220) Mooresville – Christian Warren (1450, Andrew Sanders

(160). North Putnam – Bobby Scheele (220). Plainfield – Isaac Gomez (120). South Putnam – Kieffer Vittetow (120), Jacob Lorimer (126), Brady Ballard (220),

The Bloomington South Panthers continued their stranglehold on

the regional hardware last season, but the gap between the purple

powerhouse and the rest of the teams has narrowed considerably.

In fact, South’s crosstown rival, Bloomington North might just

have enough ammunition this season to wrest the regional crown

South has held for three years straight.

North returns more than half of their lineup that finished third

last year in the regional. Seniors Hunter Dalton (182) and Zach

Wade (195) were both ticket round participants for the Marty

Hutsell-led Cougars. Six other teammates joined the big two at

regionals.

Bloomington South will not go lightly, but they are still in the

middle of a rebuilding process. They will build from the bottom up

with one of the best 106 pounders in the state in Noah Hunt and his

practice partner Luke Stull (113).

If another team has the ability to win this regional, it might be the

Southridge Raiders. If a few of their 9 regional qualifiers are able

to show improvement, they have the depth to pull it off.

Top 5 Teams

1. Bloomington North – North will be led by the 1-2

punch of Hunter Dalton (182) and Zach Wade (195). Both were

sectional champs and ticket round participants in 2016. Morgan

McGlothin (106) and Jon Inman (160), along with junior Caleb

Gosney (113) and soph Wyatt Dalton (126), joined the big two at

Evansville’s Ford Arena.

2. Bloomington South – The Panthers will attempt to

stretch their regional streak to four behind ticket rounder Noah

Hunt (106) and semistate qualifiers Luke Stull (113), Blake Webb

(138), Conner Hay (160) and Taylor Algood (195). It should be a

great battle at both the sectional and regional in B-Town.

3. Southridge – Coach Schank has 9 returning regional

qualifiers in his lineup, the most of any team in regional. To

challenge the big boys from Bloomington, some of these regional

qualifiers must step up and get deeper into the postseason. It could

be an outstanding season for the Raiders from the ‘Ridge.

4. Northview – The Boys from Brazil have traditionally

produced fine wrestlers and many state placers. 2016 should be no

exception as the Knights will feature Cale McCoy (132), the only

wrestler from this regional that returns with state credentials.

Ticket rounder Austin Cook (120), along with semistate grapplers

Stephan Gibson (138), Jacob Hendrich (170), and Marcus Druegger

(182), will be a nice group to build around for Coach Mikesell.

5. Jasper – Coach Jace Brescher has some rebuilding to do for

a squad that finished second last season at the Bloomington

regional. Tommy Brock (126) and Reid Eckert (145) are two nice

wrestlers to build around.

Top Individuals (Last Year's Weight) 1. Cale McCoy – 12 – (132) – Northview – McCoy made a fine

postseason run all the way to Bankers Life--A nice way to top off a 40-10

season.

2. Noah Hunt – 10 – (106) – Bloomington South – The wee Panther was

riding high with a 37-0 record until he was tripped up by Avon’s Mason

Miranda. Hunt was ranked 6th in the state.

3. Conner Dwyer – 11 – (285) – Terre Haute North – Dwyer dominated

this regional and took the eventual 4th place finisher in the state to the wire

in his ticket round match.

4. Hunter Dalton – 12 – (182) – Bloomington North – Dalton wrestled

exceptionally last year, winning a conference and regional title. His ticket

round experience should help him qualify for state in ’16. His 40-4 record

is further evidence of state-level credibility.

5. Austin Cook – 11 – (120) – Northview – Cook is the second Knight to

enter the regional top ten. His ’15 season ended one match short of a state

trip.

6. Zach Wade – 12 – (195) – Bloomington North – Wade, like his

teammate Dalton, finished ’15 one match short of a state berth. The

Cougar upper weights should be pushing each other in ’16.

7. Tommy Brock – 12 – (126) – Jasper – Brock, the lone Jasper Wildcat

on this list, was a ticket rounder in his junior season and will be a key

leader in his senior year.

8. Thomas Dull – 11 – (145) – Terre Haute North – Dull has spent time

in the state rankings and has some good wins to his credit. He was a

semistate qualifier as a sophomore.

9. Mitch Mundy – 12 - (152) – Southridge – Mundy was r iding high

after his regional title and 36-3 record. The end came too soon for his

liking, as he fell in the opening round at Evansville.

10. Jacob Hendrich – 11 – (170) – Northview – Hendr ich had an

outstanding sophomore campaign, winning a regional crown and compiling

a fine 35-7 record.

Others to Watch Bedford North Lawrence – Braden Yarberry (106), Jacob Ray (113),

Caleb Higgins (160). Bloom. North – Quentin Percival (120), Nick Doering

(152). Bloom. South – Chase Dixson (220). Crawford County – Noah

Sturgeon (106), Dustin McClure (113), Zach Best (132). Edgewood – Zane

Sullivan (106), Denver Aydelott (145), Eyan Coldren (170), Ty Robinson

(182), David Wilson (195). Forest Park – Zach Brosmer (120), Luke Fleck

(126), Colten Glenn (132), Landon Fleck (152). Jasper – Skyler Byrd

(113), Geordon Terwiske (132), Magana Lee (285). Mitchell – Ethan

Bohnenkamp (126), Austin Kirk (145), Delaney Chowning (220), Caelan

England (285). Owen Valley – Zach Tussey (113), Tim Tussey (152),

Devan Tussey (145). Paoli –Will Stroud (126). Salem – Daniel Scott

(120), Dylan Carpenter (138), Ian Fetz (145), Damien Miller (152), Nathan

Hunter Meyerholtz (113), Drew Dearing (113), David Rogier (132), Austin

Kane (138), Brandon Oxley (160), Davin Songer (170), Jack Michel (220).

Sullivan – Wes Bedwell (132), Kell Williams (220). Terre Haute South –

Logan Stephenson (106), Keagan Koenig (120), George Reed (160), Abel

Jennings County won their first regional crown in nearly 30 years

last season and they did so in dominating fashion. T. Howard Jones

has built a program to be envied down along US 50, and his 2016

squad might be his finest ever. A whopping eight semistate

qualifiers return to a lineup that won the regional title by nearly 50

points in 2015.

The Panthers of Jennings County also return two state-placers in

Andrew Herrin (8th) and Christian Redmond (8th). Two others are

in the regional top ten. This is a lineup that can compete with the

very best in the state.

If there is any team to challenge the Panthers this season, it will

most likely be Columbus East. The Olympians counter with six

semistate qualifiers, as well as state medalist Graham Rooks (3rd).

Floyd Central, New Albany and Greensburg follow the big two

and any of the three could make some noise in this solid regional.

Top 5 Teams

1. Jennings County – With 500 dual meet wins, 9

conference, 13 sectional and now a regional title, Coach Jones

certainly has a Hall of Fame resume. One thing that is still missing

is coaching an individual state champion. Could Andrew Herrin

(145) or Christian Redmond (195) fill this hole after placing 8th in

the state last year?

2. Columbus East – Coach Cooper also has a deep and

talented team to take to the mats in 2016. The aforementioned

Rooks (106) leads the way, but Rooks won’t be lonely as ticket-

rounders Dawson Combest (113) and Sean Galligar (285) will be

working to earn their own spots as state finalists.

3. Floyd Central – The Highlanders are traditionally the

toughest team in this regional, but they have not worn the regional

crown since 2013. Coach Sisson probably does not have the horses

to compete this year, but a young and talented squad returns.

Leaders for ’16 will be regional champ Tristan Sellmer (113), ticket

-rounder Tyler Crowl (138), and semistate qualifier Wayne Nicholas

(120).

4. New Albany – The Bulldogs had a fine season in 2015,

winning their first sectional title in 20 years. Coach Eric Burres

will reload for ’16, behind the leadership of juniors Tristin Dowell

(132) and Dalton Mowry (160). Both were regional champs and

made it to the ticket round at the Evansville semistate. Sophomores

Aaron Gohl (106) and Jaden Sonner (195) also made the semistate

trip.

5. Greensburg – Matt Cochran’s Pirates finished third in

this sectional last season and return enough for 2016 to narrowly

edge Madison for the fifth spot in this regional. Ticket-rounder

Brandon Butz (126) and fellow semistate qualifiers Jackson

Michalski (132), Dakota Delwert (160) and Dylan Cash (285) are

the core of a nice squad.

Top Individuals (Last Year's Weight) 1. Graham Rooks – 10 – (106) – Columbus East – The little big

Olympian had a stellar rookie season for the East orange. He went 44-2

and gave state champ Colton Cummings his stiffest challenge on his way to

a 3rd place medal.

2. Andrew Herrin - 12 - (145) – Jennings County – Herr in dominated

the field on his way to regional and semistate titles last year. Look for a

move up the podium this year.

3. Christian Redmond – 12 – (195) – Jennings County – Redmond, like

his teammate Herrin, finished 8th in the state for the Panthers. Look for

him to improve upon his 42-10 record and move up the podium.

4. Brandon Sutton– 11 – (285) – Jennings County – Sutton is a r are

sophomore that qualified for state at 285. Unfortunately, he ran into the

eventual state runner-up on Friday night.

5. Dalton Mowry – 11 – (160) – New Albany – Mowry came a hair ’s

breath away from being a state qualifier, losing a narrow 3-2 decision in the

ticket round. Bigger things are ahead for this talented Bulldog.

6. Evan Bullock – 11 – (120) – Brown County – Former state champ,

Coach Mark Bruner, has a talent in Bullock; the sophomore was one match

away from qualifying for State in ’15.

7. Quade Greiwe – 12 – (195) – Columbus East – Griewe lost a two-

point match in the second round of semistate or he would have joined his

teammate Rooks on the floor of Bankers Life.

8. Brady Shepherd – 10 – (220) – Jennings County – Shepherd won a

regional title in his freshman year and came within a match of qualifying

for state.

9. Tristin Dowell – 11 – (132) – New Albany – The second Bulldog

ticket-rounder, Dowell is part of a strong sophomore class.

10. Sean Galligar – 12 – (285) – Columbus East – Galligar is another

talented big man for the Olympians. His rivalry with Jennings County

heavyweight Brandon Sutton should be fun to watch.

Others to Watch Brown County – Colten Harper (113), Bristen Dial (182). Charlestown – Tanner

Smith (113), Logan Gurr (138), Zach Higdon (182), Bradley Laffoon (195).

“…And the youth will be served.” The Castle regional has expe-

rienced an influx of highly talented young grapplers over the past

couple of seasons and their impact has and will continue to be felt

at the state level. Seven of the top eight wrestlers in this regional

are either juniors or sophomores and all seven have state experi-

ence.

Mater Dei is poised to repeat as team dual state champion and

make a run for the state championship at Bankers Life, after finish-

ing third last season. The Lee brothers both will contend for a state

title and a handful of other Wildcats will be in the running for state

hardware.

The battle will be for second place in this regional and it should

come down to Mount Vernon, who return two state qualifiers, and

Castle, who might have been the youngest team in the regional last

year when they finished second.

Top 5 Teams

1. Evansville Mater Dei – The west side boys are

fully back and ready to challenge for the state title in 2016. Coach

Greg Schaefer’s Wildcats return the most state qualifiers in the

state, along with two that made it to semi state in sophomore Nolan

Weidner (106) and Kurtis Wilderman (220).

2. Castle – The Knights developed nicely last season and

won their 32nd sectional title. The cupboard is not bare, but Coach

Harmon’s troops will have Mount Vernon nipping at their heels.

Castle returns no state qualifiers but they do have two ticket-

rounders in Annakin Baxter (106), Braedon Clopton (126), plus two

other semistate qualifiers, Austin Ramsey (138), Jacob Farmer

(152), in the lineup.

3. Mount Vernon – The Wildcats have an excellent

chance to contend for 2nd place in this regional if some of their

wrestlers improve to the point where they are placing ahead of Cas-

tle kids in their weight classes. Austin Bethel and Tristin Choate

both are state qualifiers, but it will be guys like Harley Gorman

(106) and Tyler DeKemper (182) that will determine the Wildcats’

team successes.

4. Evansville Memorial – Coach Larry Mattingly

also returns a veteran squad that finished 3rd in the Castle Sectional.

The Tigers will be led by ticket-rounder Chance Williams (145), his

classmate Noah Heulsing (170), and junior Nolan Schaefer (120),

each a semistate qualifier.

5. Evansville North – There are many teams that could

slip in the fifth spot in this regional. The Huskies of Evansville

North have an excellent shot due to the return of three semistate

qualifiers. Senior teammates Nick Burke (126), Josh Elpers (132),

and Justin Naylor (152) will lead Coach Donald Asay’s squad for

2016.

Top Individuals (Last Year's Weight) 1. Nick Lee – 11 - (132) – Mater Dei – Lee the elder cruised to a state

title in his sophomore season, pinning two opponents and majoring two

others. His solid, straight ahead style is tough to deal with and he is cur-

rently ranked 4th in the country at 132.

2. Joe Lee – 10 - (138) – Mater Dei – Lee the middle was well on his

way to matching big brother when the unpredictable Tommy Cash turned

the tables under the lights. It was still a stellar freshman campaign--his

only two losses came to D1 wrestlers.

3. Will Egli – 11 – (120) – Mater Dei – Egli is another 2-time medalist

coming from this regional and a key component in the murderers’ row that

is the bottom half of the Wildcat lineup.

4. Kyle Luigs – 11 – (113) – Mater Dei – Luigs is a bit under the radar,

even in the Mater Dei lineup. He had a ticket round appearance as an un-

dersized freshman and finished 6th last year.

5. Blake Jourdan – 12 – (145) – Mater Dei – A senior leader for the

Wildcats, Jourdan also has state hardware on his resume, finishing 7th last

season.

6. Levi Miller – 10 – (106) – North Posey – Miller won nearly 50 matches

in his rookie season and gave state champ Colton Cummings a nice match

on Friday night at state.

7. Austin Bethel – 11 - (132) – Mt. Vernon – Bethel engineered one of

the biggest upsets of the year when he beat Brayton Lee at semistate. He

was awarded with a terrible draw at state. A spot on the podium is highly

likely in ’16.

8. Tristin Choate – 12 – (220) – Mt. Vernon – Choate took advantage of

a favorable draw to earn his first trip to the state finals. The 220 weight

class is deep in the south, so Choate will have to be on his game to make

his way back to Indy.

9. La’Terrance Kyles – 12 – (220) – Evansville Harrison – A two-time

ticket round participant, Kyles will be highly motivated to make his first

trip to the state finals.

10. Austin Ramsey – 12 - (138) – Castle – Ramsey is one of the top re-

turners for Coach Bob Harmon this year. He was a semi-state qualifier from

a loaded regional bracket.

Others to Watch Castle – Bailey Anderson (113), Carson Willis (113), Clay McNutt (132). Evans-

ville Bosse – Corey Schmitt (113). Evansville Central – Jacob Shanks (106), Kiave Guerrier (170), Jordan Libby (285). Evansville Harrison – Dymond Harr is

(160). Evansville Mater Dei – Mitch Lehman (152). Evansville Memorial – Hunter

Rice (106), Seth Horty (113), Chris Voegel (160), Marcus Gahagen (195). Evansville

North – Shawn Coan (160). Evansville Reitz – Alec McNeely (113), Caleb Craig

(126), Andrew Shaw (182). Gibson Southern – Logan Dilbeck (113), Michael Polen

(126), Cory Klem (220). Heritage Hills – Owen Ninke (132). Mount Vernon – Noah Keller (126), Micah Keller (138), Kyle Lang (195), Wade Ripple (285). North Posey

– Cameron Fisher (113), Kameron Capps (120), Colton Gamblin (132). Ryan Martin

(138). Pike Central – Colton O’Neal (152), Jaylon Owens (160). Princeton – Kyler McKinley (106), Chase Wilson (132). South Spencer – Spencer Kirchgessner

(106), Keith Barclay (195). Tecumseh – Zack Graham (120), Tommy Pemberton

(145), Jeremy McKinley (182), Cade Arnold (220). Tell City – Aubrey Craig (120), Joe Craig (126), Jarrett Hawhee (145). Vincennes Lincoln – Daniel Miller (126),

Joseph Bauer (170). Wood Memorial – Dalton Ashby (126), Louis Hoover (170),

Quinten Might (182).

There is no better way to incite a riot amongst sports fans than

claiming your favorite athlete is the “best ever.” What constitutes

the best ever is always up for grabs not matter the sport. You will

always have the old timers who say their heroes were better and

tougher. The younger folks will claim that today’s athletes are far

more superior and others will try to be the voice of reason(at least

in their minds). This year we have already had the talk start about

who the best ever is and I don’t expect the talk to die down any

time soon. One thing for sure is that we have been able to see many

guys that can lay claim to the best ever over the past 15 years.

Everyone has their different criteria for the best ever and it would

probably be easier to get a Democrat to vote Republican than to

change who they think is the best ever. How much to you weigh

having four state titles or national success? How much do you

factor in dominance in their victories throughout their career? Add

that to your personal favorites from “your era” or personal

connections to some of the guys and you get a fun discussion.

This year we will certainly add Chad Red to the conversation of the

best ever. He has a laundry list of accolades that include winning

the best tournaments in the nation like the Super 32, Fargo, and

FloNationals. On top of that he just recently cemented himself as

the #1 guy in the country at Who’s #1. That’s just the tip of the

iceberg for the Nebraska commit.

Jason Tsirtis is another one that is in the mix with four state titles

and a Fargo title also. He also garnered a win over a former NCAA

champion in freestyle while he was still taking gym class at Crown

Point. And don’t forget his brother Alex who sliced through the

competition like a warm knife through butter during his four years

at Griffith.

Blake Maurer and Angel Escobedo both are thrown into the mix.

They had four titles and a heft national resume while in high school.

Unfortunately Maurer’s competitive career was cut short in college.

Escobedo won an NCAA title and was the first four time All-

American for Indiana University to go along with his high school

credentials.

No argument about the best ever would be complete without

throwing(literally and figuratively) Lance Ellis’ name into the mix.

He was undefeated during his career and had about a gazillion and

seven pins on top of that.

The discussion doesn’t stop there though. Where do you put guys

like Reece Humphrey and Andrew Howe who had three titles and a

solid national resume? I’ll even throw out a name that might

surprise many, but look at what Shawn Streck has done. How many

heavyweights have placed all four years in high school? I’ll go out

on a strong limb and say there are less heavyweight four time

placers than there are four time undefeated state champions.

Any way you want to slice it we are lucky to have been able to see

many great wrestlers recently. It certainly does not look as if the

cupboard is bare and we will continue to have wrestlers with

national success.

One cool thing that I am looking forward to this year is Indiana’s

first time competing in the Pittsburgh Wrestling Classic(formerly

Dapper Dan). This is an awesome honor for our state to be able to

wrestle at this prestigious event. It will be a great experience for our

guys to go there. With what may be our best senior class in history

we will get to show the nation how good Indiana wrestling really is.

As with everything there are a lot of thanks that goes into this

magazine and the website in itself. First and foremost our rankings

guy Mike Reiser who has done an outstanding job as usual. Last

year he predicted 74% of the state qualifiers just in our preseason

magazine! Either he has a crystal ball or he has quite a knack for

evaluating the talent in the state. Next, a big hefty thanks goes to

Chad Hollenbaugh one of the original founders of the website. He

does some great writing and contributes behind the scenes with lots

of ideas and suggestions. Other big props goes to our team rankings

guy Dane Fuelling who does as much research into this magazine as

anyone. Predicting team success in every class is a daunting task.

Cameron Drury has been helping with his great writing skills since

the beginning. He is also a great editor that goes over the magazine

with a fine tooth comb looking for mistakes. Our New Castle and

Evansville semistate rankings gurus also deserve a lot of praise.

Howard Cottey took over New Castle last year and did an

outstanding job. Speaking of outstanding jobs….Dustin Bentz has

always hammered out a great set of rankings, even though he isn’t

good at nicknames.

Another thanks goes to all the fans of the sport. This is the greatest

sport ever and I fully believe Indiana has the best and most

knowledgeable fans.

Lastly I need a big thanks to my family. They get to enjoy the perks

of running this website, such as unlimited wrestling matches,

talking to all the people in the state, and even better an unlimited

amount of GEAR! My wife is a trooper who has accepted there are

very few times that I am not working on the website or going to a

wrestling event. Good luck to everyone this year as we partake on

another great wrestling season.
