Overview Magellan Compass is a mapping and navigation application.  It utilizes Map Quest data for a variety of information and display.  In addition to maps and directions, Magellan Compass provides a wide range of “overlay” information that is displayed on top of the maps.  The majority of the application does require an Internet connection.  In the case of maps, no map data is pre‐loaded with the application, so an Internet connection is required.  However, as you use the application, map data is automatically stored on your device for quicker access as well as access when no Internet connection is available.  The high level features of the application include:

• Map Quest data • Real‐time traffic • Directions • Route Navigation • Multiple bookmarks • Custom points‐of‐interest (POI) with custom icons • Yelp® business locations and review • Flickr® photo album • GPS tracking • GPS recording • U.S Weather Radar overlay • U.S. Airport status • Earthquake locations • Off‐line map caching • Touch navigation

Map Screen

After the application has been loaded, the map view will be displayed.  The map will display the location and zoom level that was last displayed from the previous session.  On this screen, there is the map on the right side and a feature bar along the left.  The feature bar provides quick access to the most common features of the application.  Additional  features can be accessed  from  the application bar.   On  the BlackBerry PlayBook,  the application bar  is accessed by swiping down from the top bezel.

Depending on which layers are selected, additional information may be displayed in or along the sides of the map.  In this case, the map has weather, airport status, and route guidance displayed.

Map Navigation  Zooming Maps can be zoomed in and out in a multitude of ways.

• There is a plus (zoom in) and a minus (zoom out) button in the upper right corner of the map. • The user can also use two finger gestures to zoom the map by pinching in to zoom out and expanding out to

zoom in. • Double tap will zoom in the map. • Double, two‐finger tap will zoom out the map.

Panning The map can be panned by simply picking and dragging the map around with your finger.  Preferences can define how fast a map is slide.   The “faster”  the map can slide will allow  the user  to quickly slide across  the map  for a period of  time before  it slows down. The map can also be moved around by various other controls, like bookmarks and marker menus.

In addition to addresses, the user can enter a  latitude and  longitude.    If they  just enter a  latitude and  longitude  like "34,‐100", then the map will move to the closest address to that  latitude and  longitude.    If the user enters "@34,‐100", then the map will move to that exact location, regardless if there is a real address nearby.  Depending the map provider, the search results may differ.  This also depends on where on the earth you are searching.  So if the user  is not getting a good search result on  the address entered,  try changing map provider  to see  if  the search result  is better suited.

Layers Various "layers" can be displayed on the map at one time. Toggling an item in the list and selecting the "check" icon will update the display.  Some layers have preferences associated with them. Selecting the gear icon along the right side will display the preferences for that layer.  My GPS Location Ability to show or hide the GPS marker on the map.

Points of Interest The user can manage specific "points of interest" (POI) that can be saved with a previously saved bookmark.  Therefore, the user can have any number of "sets" of POIs to be easily recalled when a bookmark is selected.

To add a POI, select the context menu on any feature/marker on the map. The menu has  its regular  assorted  items  to  show.  In  the  lower right is a marker with a plus sign in it. Selecting that will show the POI editor.  Simply select a previously selected bookmark, give  them a name  for  the new bookmark and select  an  icon  to  represent  the  bookmark.  Icons are broken into various categories.  Once done,  select  the  "check"  button  to  save  the selection and  the POI will be displayed  in  the map.

Selecting a previously saved POI will show  its context menu. The double arrow  icon on  the  right will allow  the POI  to be dragged  to a new  location.   The  "X"  icon will delete the POI and the "edit" icon in the lower right will allow the user to edit the POI such as its name and icon.

Once bookmarks are created, they can be managed under the Bookmark preference page (gear icon in layer list).  Bookmarks, along with their points‐of‐interest can be managed from this page. Bookmarks can be renamed or removed along with any associated points of interest (POI). When a bookmark is selected, their associated POIs are displayed. Each POI can be edited (name, and icon) or can be deleted.  POIs can also be edited and deleted from the map view as well.

The Go To button under the POI list allows the user to jump back to the main map to the selected POI.

GPS Record The current GPS location can be recorded to create a "track" file.  The track file (GPX) can be imported into other GPS applications like Google Earth.   Waypoints are only added  if  it  is greater  than 6 meters  (~18') away  from  the  last  recorded waypoint.   The recording will automatically stop  if the user switches screens or  if the total duration exceeds a maximum amount of time.   GPX files are saved in the user's documents directory with the default file name of “date+time”.

GPS Indicator The GPS marker will automatically update when new GPS information occurs.  The application makes take a few moments before the initial tracking may occur.  There is an indicator in the lower left corner of the application that provides a high level view of the status of the GPS tracking device.  Initially, the GPS monitor will be inactive waiting for the initial response from the GPS sensor.  If all the bars are green, it indicates that GPS updates have been occurring regularly.  As bars begin to drop off, it indicates that GPS updates have been coming less frequently and may be caused for limited access to the GPS satellites.

If you are using your device for the first time for GPS, it is best to be near a window or outside where the device can have a clear view to the open sky.  It may take anywhere between 5‐20 minutes for the device to lock on and configure for GPS. Obstacles, like interior rooms and car roof tops may interfere with GPS sensor reception.

Map This view controls the preferences of map display and map data caching.  Data caching only occurs for standard map tiles and not for hybrid or satellite layers.

Provider:      The source of the map images being displayed in the map.  Show Crosshair:     Option to show a crosshair in the center of the map.  Include Weather Menu Item:   Choice to show weather menu item in marker context menu.  Slide:  The relative amount the map should slide when panned.  The quicker the panning by flicking the

finger across  the screen,  the  faster  the map will slide  relative  to  the selection made here.   The range is from “None” to “Ultra”.

Cache This view controls the preferences of managing the map cache or stored map data.  Stored map data allows the user to traverse maps while disconnected from the  Internet.   Cache map data  is done automatically when the user pans and zooms around the maps.  The data is then stored to the device while the user is not doing anything.  To give an  idea of how much map data  can  take and how  long  it  can  take  to  store  (depending on  the  speed of  the network connection):  Washington, DC from map level 14 to 18 takes about 180MB and 20 minutes to save.  New York City from map level 12 to 17 takes about 300MB and about 1.5 hours to save.

Cache Limit:  The maximum about of disk space that should be used to store map data.  Once this amount has been used, no additional map data will be stored.  A choice of “None” will tell the application not to utilize map caching and to only get map information from the Internet.

Used:  The total amount currently used.    Clear Cache:       Option to clear all saved map data.  Pending Tiles:  Number of pending tiles that are expected to be saved.  Map information is stored periodically.  If

the user quits the application before the remaining tiles are saved, they will be “lost”.  Save Pending:  If there are pending tiles, and the user wants to rush the saving of this information, selecting this

button will  accelerate  this  process.   Otherwise,  they will  be  stored  on  their  own  schedule.   A progress bar is shown during the saving process.

Current Map To:  The user has the option to save a region of map data.   This  is similar to saving map data  long a

route, but this will save map data of the current region of the map, starting at the zoom level of

Page 40: Magellan Compass Users Guide

the map.   The selected value  is the  level the user wants to gather below the current map  level.  The default selection is the current level of the map.  The more levels selected the more data that will be accessed and the longer it will take to save.  A maximum of six (6) levels can be accessed at one  time.   This  is a substantial amount of data, so  the user should not  try  to access  the entire world or even a continent, since there simply is not enough disk space to store all of this data.

Existing Tile:  The user  can  choose how  to manage  any  existing  tiles  that might  exist  from  a previous  cache

storage session.  A tile can exist at some point in the current region at any of the levels selected.  The user may select:

Leave Alone:  If the tile exists, do nothing.           Replace:  If the tile exists, replace it with one from the server.

Refresh:  If the tile is more than two weeks old, update it with one from the server.  This  is  a  good  choice  to  refresh  stale map  data  that might  be  on  the device.

When the user is ready to add any new tiles for the selected region and map levels, they may press the Add button.  If all the tiles have already been retried, the user will be alerted.

A progress bar will indicated the number of tiles saved and the number of tiles in total to save, along with an estimated time of completion.  The user can abort the process at any time by pressing the Abort button.  If the maximum cache limit is reached, the saving process will automatically abort.  The user can also delete a region of map data in a similar way that map data is stored.  Set the map region, initial map level and the Current Map To level and press the Delete button.  This is a good way to remove regions of map data to make room for another region.

Voice This view controls the preferences of which voice to use  in the application as well as the ability to download other voices.   The applications come with a default voice to use with the application (Doris).  Additional voices can be purchased.  To check for new an updated voice, the user can select the Update button.  The user can preview another voice by selecting the voice and press the Play button.  When the user is ready to purchase a voice, selecting Download will step the user through the purchase screen.  If the voice was previously purchased and it has been updated, selecting the Download button will simply update the voice without additional purchases being required.

The Delete button will delete the purchased voice from the user’s device.  If they try to re‐download it, they will not see the purchases steps.

GPS Record This view controls the preferences of GPS recording.  A user’s GPS track can be recorded to a file.  The GPX file format can then be imported into other application including Google Earth.

Format:        Format of the exported data.  Minimum Time Separation:  The minimum time between route data stored into the file.  If the user’s device received

GPS updates sooner than the specified amount, the information will be skipped.  Minimum Distance Separation:  The minimum  distance  between  route  data  stored  into  the  file.    If  the  user’s  device

received GPS updates  that are closer  to  the  last saved position,  then  it will be skipped.  For example, if the device is standing still, the file would only have one location saved to the file, until the device moves at least the selected amount (in meters).

Trouble Shooting  Using GPS for the First Time If you are using your device for the first time for GPS, it is best to be near a window or outside where the device can have a clear view to the open sky.  It may take anywhere between 5‐20 minutes for the device to lock on and configure for GPS. Obstacles, like interior rooms and car roof tops may interfere with GPS sensor reception.  GPS not showing up If the device has been in doors for a period a time, the GPS receiver in the device will have lost its ability to hone into the orbiting GPS satellites.  It is best to reboot the device outside for it to have a clear advantage point to the satellites.  GPS marker does not re‐center with the map The GPS marker can automatically re‐center the map as it moves.  This can be done by selecting the GPS marker, or by selecting the GPS button along the  left side of the map screen.   This can also be the default behavior by selecting “Track” under the GPS preferences for “On Initial GPS”.  Guidance is off from actual road OR Guidance is saying that I made a wrong turn For  the most part,  this  is probably because  the  route data  is  slightly off  from  the  actual  road.    This  information  is publically available, so it can be updated by anyone by going to the MapQuest Potlatch 2 OSM Editor found at:  http://open.mapquestapi.com/dataedit/  If that is too much problem, just send us an address so we can look into it for you.  It takes about 1‐2 days for submissions to be approved and available to the route guidance system.  Guidance Error If you get an error trying to get directions, typical reasons include:

• Not connected to the Internet • One or more of the way points are too far from a street • Street information at the end way points have directions that does not allow the route to move in that direction

(e.g. one‐way street).
