CHA-RETTE- (BLUE)

CHARETTEthis semester started off with a charette. which was a tradition started on architecture schools in france as a competition where students were given some criteria then sent out for the day to draw and paint. the charette was the name of the cart that was driven around at the end of the day to pick up the work. the entire design department was given a theme (blue) on which to spend two weeks working on whatever they pleased wether it be a perfor-mance or instillation or something different all together, it all was to take place at the same time. in cel-ebration of the theme of blue for this years charette, the entire class went to go see the movie avatar.AVATARwhile it was a pretty movie and they used some interesting tech-nology, the writing in general was pretty bad. the characters lacked any real depth or personality and didn’t change throughout the en-tire movie, that is, they were totally predictable and not very interest-ing. the sequencing in the movie might be the most interesting part of the movie and had some re-ally nice moments and made the movie somewhat believable. the sequencing was especially well done in the opening scene where jake sully is narrating how he got into the avatar program. i think the problem with the movie was really just the story line, i mean, it’s not bad if you liked fern gully and halo and pocahontas and every other generic action flick out there. i think that they really over-spiri-tualized the whole movie really playing up the mother-earth-spirit thing really emphasizing the environmental consciousness of the movie to the point where i just didn’t care about it anymore.

BLUE RAVEto contribute to the sense of com-munity that occurs during the charette, the junior design class decided to host a blue party with music and food during the event. a few days before the event i did some advertising for the party (titled the blue rave). I used some wide blue painters tape and taped up a wall on the main floor of the art and architecture building. i wanted it to be really tall and play-ful with some interesting diagonals working in it to kind of reference the 80’s. i also tried to create some interest by pulling them off of the wall and down onto the floor. I thought it turned out awe-some. i snapped some pictures of it and threw it into the computer and played around with vector-izing it because i wanted to try and improve my skills. in the spirit of growth and experimentation i went ahead and played around a little bit more working with type in a circle really just for fun.

14MASKSone day last semester i took a break from doing design work and made this mask out of a bunch of random stuff i have in my studio. after i finished i proceeded to wear it around the building regardless of mot having anyway to see out of it. for the charette i decided to make another mask this time a blue one. again in an attempt to expand my skill set i took both masks into the computer and illustrated them.

STUDIO OBJECT

STUDIO OBJECTwe were assigned to create a virtual version of our studio in which we show any aspect of our workspace that we want. i chose to show my home studio in which i work in just as much time as i do my studio at school. in my studio i keep a lot of objects in my studio in which i draw inspiration from. our tours final form had to be a website. i wanted my website to function as a community space for designers and creatives in which they could upload their own studio spaces and objects. at the same time i wanted it to be very simple and clean. this idea also involved a kit that would cross lines and establish a standardized criteria and process for document-ing the work spaces of people across many disciplines. as part of the process of preparing for the assignment i went on a series of explorations into different areas to find out what exactly a studio or workspace was or wasn’t and how to tell the difference between the two of them. what i learned was that artists and designers and architects all work in a studio that doubles as a classroom that allows for equal amounts of refinement and experimentation where the studio can function as a home or living space but the home or living space cannot function as a studio. this is very different from musi-cians and engineers who don’t view their work space as a studio but only as a classroom. i like to keep my workspace very orga-nized and as part of the project i documented every object and categorized them into four differ-ent groups: freestanding objects, hanging objects, flat objects, non-flat objects, as well as my actual space.

22wood-i found this piece of wood in one of the archi-tecture studios. i stole it.

littleredman- i got this little guy a couple of years ago. he has magnets in his hand and butt so he’s fun to keep around to stick on stuff. i really like having things in my space that i can alter or play with when i hit a mental wall. i love his color and he’s just so happy. .

vinyl- i don’t know why i like this. its just the down-load code for a album i bought on vinyl, maybe it’s the proportion of the large black square and the thin white border.

raisedbywolves- i ordered this rad watch from the canadian de-sign firm furni. the watch was a collaboration be-tween them and raised by wolves. i like the type on it and its contrast to the background. the typeface is really inter-esting.

thumbprints-i was experimenting with ink one day last semester and made a few prints of my thumb. i think that they are really interest-ing. i’m trying to come up with something to use them for.

runningnumber- last fall i ran a 5k. it was my first time and a big goal because i had started running and was very determined to do it. i think the numbers are really interesting but i really keep it around to remind myself of what i can do when i put my mind to it.

slide-this is a messed up slide that came with a bunch of non-messed up slides of some family i don’t know from Athens Ten-nessee.

prom- i found this in my par-ents house i think it’s a picture of my dads se-nior prom but you can’t really tell.

23newyorkgraffiti- when i was a senior in high school i really began to get into art. that being said, i was really at-tracted to street art. so for spring break i went to new york city armed with only a polaroid. i took a ton of pictures of street art and this was one of my favorites.

daddrunk- two years ago my aunt gave me this picture of my dad. apparently in high school they had a party when my grand-mother was out of town one weekend. There is some debate whether he is holding celery or cigarettes.

dad- last year i found a box full of pictures of my father. i took a couple of them without him know-ing partly because i like how they looked and partially because i feel like i’ve gotten to know him better through them.

graffiti- some local graffiti work with great line quality.

feathers- i made these feathers as part of my project for the charette. i like them.

asia- an old friend gave this to me. she didn’t know that i was really into asian art in high school. i really like the colors and forms.

indexxerox- this was an experiment for a bookmaking class. i don’t know what it is about this but i think it looks awesome.

gcutout- this was one of my favorite projects from last year. i combined a

“g” and an “o” to make an interesting letterform. i made a poster as well as laser-cutting a bunch of thin sheets of wood and gluing them together to make toys. this is the negative.

a-this was my final grade for a class that was very challenging, taught by a very respected teacher.

key-i got this key at an antique shop. i have this attraction to old metals. sometimes i like to just pick the key up and hold it in my hand and just feel the weight.

glasscontainers- i like to keep these little glass containers on my desk. i tell myself that if i could put stuff in them if i ever needed to but re-ally i just like the quality of the glass and the form that it was melted into.

3dglasses-these are some super old school 3d glasses. sometimes i put them on to see things in 3d or just in blue and red.

i assembled a kit that had every-thing someone would need to begin documenting their space as well as collecting objects for it. the objects in the kit are the same as the symbols i developed for the site. the site was very simple with the five categories. on each pages the pictures were displayed and more information was available when you clicked on them

SOLAR HOUSE

LOGOSthe solar house is part of a compe-tition hosted by the department of energy called the solar decathlon where colleges and universities can submit plans for 100% efficient houses that are under 800 square feet. the competition is a collabo-ration between architects, engi-neers, landscape designers, inte-rior designers, programmers, and graphic designers. our class was brought in to work on the brand-ing and identity for the house this involved creating a logo, working on icons for the house, and work-ing on infographics explaining how the house worked. the entire pro-cess involved a lot of experimen-tation and refinement. we tried, at several points, to change the name unsuccessfully. i approached it from a lot of different angles and really wanted to communicate the modularity of the house as well as the fact that the house is really changing how our lives affect the environment.

POSTDESIGN

THE MANIFESTOwe were put into groups for this project with the goal of creating a manifesto. every member of the group had to use some format to post about our manifesto every-day for two weeks then come up with some final form. we sat down and discussed how we wanted our manifesto to work and decided to make a tumblr because it is a very simple blog format. we thought it would be too much to try and build a deep manifesto when we had nothing to work from so the plan was to just start posting things that inspired us and writing about anything, basically it was all free game. to distinguish the posts we came up with nicknames for ourselves by cutting up all of the letters in our names, throwing them in a hat, then drawing the same number of letters out. so our first posts were our names written on our prompts.

60POST DESIGNi decided i wanted to be not only posting something everyday but that i wanted to be making some-thing new everyday. so everyday i would make something post it then write about what it meant to me. the further we got into the project the more we noticed our-selves playing off of and reacting to each others posts. a lot of the time i would give what i had made away, post it around the build-ing, or make it in the realms of the building and leave it up.

THEBIG READ

THE BIG READwe were presented with an as-signment to do a publicity cam-paign for the big read which is a program by the national endow-ment for the arts that encourages libraries and communities to read one book together for a month to promote literacy. this years book is zora neale hurston’s, their eyes were watching god. in the book, gossip plays a big part in the progression of the story line. because the goal of the big read is to get people who don’t normally read, to read, my group decided to aim the campaign as women in their twenties and thirties who read magazines but not novels. we did this by making a mock magazine that took parts of the book and translating them into the language of these magazines in hopes that the readers would see the book as being relevant in today’s society.

AMOINTERFACE DESIGNwe had to develop a theoretical interface. i developed the amo or the arbitrary mapping object, is essentially, the smart combination of a trip planner or concierge and a gps system. the combination is put on e-paper. currently e-paper uses an e-ink that is only black and white and is not flexible, but scientists are currently developing flexible, full color e-paper. users have an account on the amo and login to use it. first time users are prompted to create an ac-count and fill out a short survey so that the program grows and changes depending on the users preferences. the interface is an abstracted map in which buildings are reduced to shapes and streets to lines and nothing is labeled. the user is represented on the map by a triangle with the point facing the top of the map. users use a tool bar on the right side of the map to select what they are looking for. as they select buildings that house the businesses appear in three colors, the darkest being the most compatible and the lightest being the least. the amo would not be something that is downloadable onto a smart phone but would ex-ist as a physical object that users would carry around somewhere like a glove box with its dimen-sions being 11x13 emulating a more manageable style of map. the screen would be touch-screen and users could scroll and zoom in or out. the amo could have two uses. the first would be for users visiting new cities and looking for fun, new, exciting things to do that the amo thinks they would enjoy. the second would be for users in their hometowns and could act as a randomizer for selecting restau-rants or activities.

80after the user visit the location they are prompted to rate and comment on their experience as to better help categorize other users experiences. this is interest-ing to me because of how tech-nology has advanced to personal gps and how paper maps have all but been done away with. this would be a sort of revival of the map in a more modern experience that would turn cities into areas of exploration where you don’t know where your going only the idea of what you will find there. i am interested in how users choose where they will go when they do not know the names of places that they will end up. LOGOin addition to developing a inter-face we had to create a brand for it. i originally named my interface the hano after hanno the navigator. i also wanted to refer to the span-ish word mano for hand. i liked the name but with the logo i had people kept reading it as ano and amo just seemed to work the best.

THE LIGHT OF INTERI-ORS

IDENTITYthe first step in this assignment was to make two self portraits. the first was to portray something that most people didn’t know about you. mine was that i secretly want to be a hitman or a mob boss. The second was supposed to show ourselves in a stereotype that we subscribe to. mine was the indie-scene-lookbook-style stereotype.the next step in the project was to take what we learned with story-telling and pick a poem and make a video based off it. i chose kay ry-ans’ the light of interiors. the poem is about light and how it feels in a place when the nature of a space has changed and can’t be fixed back to its original state. the video was filmed in black and white to better communicate the overall feeling of the poem.

POETRYFILIBU-STER

WIND IN A BOXfour design students and myself were asked by a creative writing professor to create posters for a poetry reading event. she had five poems picked out to go on the posters and asked for the post-ers to be 11 by 17 and in black and white (she was planning on xerox-ing them). i took terrance hayes’ poem, wind in a box. i set the background to a solid grey that would change depending on the qualities of the specific xerox ma-chine being used. also, the inkcould be altered on the posters depending on the type of paper.
