It is with immense pride that we bring Magical Nights in Dubai back to the UAE for the fourth time in six years; this time, during Nowrouz celebrations. As ever, the dedicated Magic of Persia team have worked tirelessly over the past year to put together another star-studded event; managing everything from promotion and logistics to the production of our most comprehensive catalogue to date. We are delighted to have successfully established a number of charitable initiatives in partnership with world class institutions, including MOP CAP; our bi-annual art prize which has already created so many opportunities for emerging young talent. It is with the funds raised at the Magical Nights in Dubai events that we are able to sustain these initiatives.
Each project provides a chance for a talented young Iranian artist with great potential to expand their horizons, hone their skills and enrich their lives in a way which was previously not possible. It is so humbling to watch the charity become the first point of call outside of Iran for young artists; with so many gifted individuals reaching out to us for guidance, advice and sponsorship. Innovative, inspired and well-planned projects are often presented to us in the hope of gaining support; and while we strive to give as much as we can of our expertise and resources, we so often have to turn down these worthy proposals due to limited funds. As the team always tell me, I just don’t know how to say no!
There are countless individuals and organisations that have supported Magic of Persia and enabled us to create such a spectacular event; not least the donating artists, who bring with them the ‘magic’ to make this all possible. Magical Nights in Dubai 2012 is a truly historical event; as so many incredible artists will be together under one roof in celebration of themselves, their peers and of course the Iranian New Year. The collective attendance of these talented individuals is in keeping with our mission to encourage cross cultural communication and create opportunities for them to meet artists and collectors from outside their country of origin. This event will provide a rare opportunity for both young and established collectors to see an incredible spectrum of contemporary Iranian art and interact with the artists themselves.
On behalf of Magic of Persia, I would like to thank every single supporter for believing in us, every artist for showing generosity beyond compare, and of course the UAE, for hosting us during Nowrouz; which is such a special and unique time of year for Iranians around the world.

Mighty EchOEs
The experience of curating this collection was like unravelling the most primary fabrics of the Iranian art scene. It also brought to light the fascinating issue that is the holographic character of this art, either in the Diaspora or the homeland.
The majority of the artists in the Silent Auction are from my own generation; the generation that experienced war, post revolutionary morbidities, destruction and reconstruction; a generation whose raison d’être is a mutual pain. Magic of Persia’s endeavour to seek out and promote these works resonates in their voices; their mighty echoes.
This collection would have never been made possible without the generous support of Mr. Fereydoun Ave, the man for all seasons and I would like to extend a special thanks to Mrs. Shirley Elghanian; the portrait of a lady.

Established in 2004, Magic of Persia is a non-religious, non-political UK-based charity which nurtures and develops Iranian cultural practitioners of the arts. This is accomplished by establishing initiatives promoting modern, contemporary and classical Persian art, music and media, in partnership with world-class institutions.
Programs include residencies for talented young artists at the Delfina Foundation, Gasworks and Visiting Arts. In addition, Magic of Persia offers several MA scholarships at the London Film School and MFA grants at the Royal College of Art.
The Magic of Persia Educational Family Weekends, held at the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, feature workshops and activities through which families can come together to learn about Persian culture and its unique contribution to modern society. This partnership between Magic of Persia and the British Museum continues through a series of informative Artists’ Talks arranged in conjunction with the museum’s acquisitions of contemporary Iranian art.
One of the charity’s most established initiatives to date is the bi-annual Magic of Persia Contemporary Art Prize

(MOP CAP); a global search to identify the next generation of Iranian artists. The MOP CAP nominating and judging panels are comprised of gallerists, curators, artists and critics who are familiar with the Iranian art scene. In keeping with Magic of Persia’s goal to provide maximum exposure for the applicants, the works of all shortlisted artists are exhibited in Dubai at a leading gallery during Art Dubai. Furthermore, the Finalists’ works are exhibited for public viewing during Frieze Art Fair at the Royal College of Art, London. The MOP CAP winner is awarded a solo exhibition the following year at a leading arts institution such as the Saatchi Gallery.
At the heart of Magic of Persia is a mission to provide much-needed opportunities for talented individuals both inside and outside of Iran; supporting them in gaining well-deserved international recognition. Through its activities, the charity strives to make a notable contribution to the long-term advancement of Iranian art and culture worldwide.

THE FUTURE CENTRE FOR SPECIAL NEEDS
The Future Centre for Special Needs is a non-profit organisation based in Abu Dhabi. It specialises in the education and habilitation of individuals with disabilities, who may stay at the centre between the ages of 3 and 20.
Its multi-national team of specialists consists of special education teachers, speech and language therapists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologists and administration staff. The Future Centre has been an ongoing beneficiary of Magical Nights in Dubai. The president of this commendable organisation is the long standing patron and tireless supporter of Magic of Persia, His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Bin Mubarak Al Nahayan. www.future-centre.com
KIDS COMPANY
Kids Company was founded by Camila Batmanghelidjh in 1996. It provides practical, emotional and educational support to vulnerable inner-city children in the greater London area. Their services reach 16,000 children across London, including the most deprived and at risk, whose parents are unable to care for them due to their own practical and emotional challenges.
In 2007, Kids Company was awarded the Liberty and Justice Human Rights Award. In 2010, they were selected as a ‘Child Poverty Champion’ by the End Child Poverty project for their success in enabling children to achieve their full potential.www.kidsco.org.uk

THE OMID FOUNDATIONS
Founded in 2004, the Omid Foundations provide emotional and practical support for severely disadvantaged young Iranian women. These women are faced with relentless emotional and financial deprivation. The Omid Foundations enable them to achieve self-determination and self-sufficiency in modern Iranian society. Magic of Persia will be exhibiting photographs taken by some of the young women who recently took part in a photography workshop led by Shadi Ghadirian in 2011. The workshop was part of the Omid Foundations’ holistic program that strengthens the social, emotional and economic competencies of disadvantaged young women, by visually expressing their thoughts about womanhood and femininity. Magic of Persia is presenting the exhibition in parallel with the Exhibition of Auction Highlights at the Salsali Private Museum. The photographs in the exhibition are for sale with all sales proceeds benefiting the Omid Foundations. www.omid-e-mehr.org

Isabelle de La Bruyère joined Christie’s London in 1998, where she specialized in Impressionist and Modern Art as an expert, before heading the specialist annual sales of Ottoman & Orientalist Art.
Based in Dubai, Isabelle has published numerous articles on Impressionist and Orientalist Art, and has been a guest speaker in many seminars and educational lectures. She frequently travels to New York, London, Paris and Geneva, following Christie’s most important auctions and private client sales. As both an advisor for buyers and sellers, she has been instrumental in forming and selling important collections worldwide, bringing single-owner sales to Christie’s which included works of art that have set world auction record prices.

James joined the Dubai team in March 2011 having previously supported the Bids office teams in Christie’s King Street, Hong Kong and Geneva. Following his graduation from the Brera Academy of Milan in 1959, Tanavoli taught sculpting at the Tehran College of Decorative Arts, and from 1961- 1963 he taught at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. He then returned to Iran and assumed the head of sculpting department at the University of Tehran, a position he held for 18 years until 1979, when he retired from his teaching duties. Since 1989 he has lived and worked both in Tehran and Vancouver, Canada. Tanavoli’s work has been displayed at the British Museum, the Grey Art Gallery, New York University, the Isfahan City Center, Metropolitan Museum, New York, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis, Olympic Park, Seoul, S. Korea, Qatar National Museum, Royal Museum of Jordan, Royal Scottish Museum, UK, the Museum of Modern Art in Vienna, Museum of Modern Art, New York, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Shiraz University, Iran and in numerous other prestigious venues around the world.

Photographs of the unrest following the June 2009 elections in Tehran were transmitted to the world in a very small format. This was done to bypass the internet slow-down instigated by the Iranian government. As a result of their size, these digitally transmitted images, of which Pazooki was sent several by friends caught up in the furore, would pixelate when zoomed into. Those outside of Tehran hoping to make sense of what was going on would have to navigate through the blocky deconstructed rendering of these images. With this idea, Pazooki has assembled a collection of these images to form a pixelated diary of that time. She has graphically altered the pixelated images to make them more aesthetically pleasing; otherwise these are original shots of the protests that overtook Tehran at that time.Incredibly, Pazooki was able to show these works in a recent solo show in Tehran. Though such images, in their original legible format, are outlawed, the artist’s pixelated versions were shown. She notes the element of double-censorship in these works, in the tiny size that the images were sent in and also the act of zooming an image into illegibility. The physicality of the works themselves also reflect and mirror the difference in comprehension between those within a catastrophe and those outside it up-close; these are mere blocky masses, but from a distance the chaos becomes clear.

The notion of political art can be difficult to digest. Today, works that overtly take current events in hand can seem resigned to the ‘70s and ‘80s, as if they’ve skipped on some of the apathy that has set in. Yet in the Middle East, and much of the world where religion and politics maintain a delicate interlinking, politics remains an overwhelming force in life and art. The works that form the bulk of this collection were formulated around June of 2009, as the Iranian capital was overcome with mass protests challenging the elections at that time. Collage is laced with performance, photo montage is given a fresh and visceral direction. Painting a catastrophe becomes an exploration of both the sadism and masochism of the form. The works balance between solemnity and raucous humor. Haerizadeh invites us to stare wryly into the disaster.Born only a few years before the Revolution, Haerizadeh watched an entire nation remake itself in the wake of the upheaval; the mandatory covering of women, the tide of conservatism that spread through the country and history constantly reshaped. With only a few strokes of a censor’s black marker, it seems, a nation could be cut and pasted into a new, Islamic shape.

The most classic pop culture flags in the Shi’a region are the hanging embroideries with a calligraphy design showing holy names as well as religious figures and ornaments. They are traditionally presented on black textiles and hung outdoors on the walls of mosques, alleys and bazaars.In my piece, main calligraphy imitates uneducated people and fake calligraphy. Here, I cut out the classic content and put in a nasty Iranian proverb which translates as ‘our cow doesn’t milk, but pisses plenty’. It is a little kitsch and a little political; sad yet funny, critical and sharply ironic.

Events and occurrences, which have their own logic, are the accidents which I reveal in my work and through them I discover a new layer of myself. Years ago, when I entered high school, I painted as a means to escape the mundane academic atmosphere of the educational system. I failed to understand the relevance of the subjects being taught to my daily life. I opted to enter the art academy and that marked the beginning of my journey into the world of art, a world in which I learned to discover myself…..I begin each piece with a sound; it can be the sound of a leaf dropping. Each work needs its own logic and guidelines and has to be unique and be ruled by its own laws. I know a work is complete when it finds its own life, at which point I prefer to hide my intentions and allow viewers to come up with their own conclusions. I would like their conclusions to end this process with a sound as well, the sound of more questions.

The Moneymaking Persian Calligraphy comprises one hundred and twenty patchwork fabric panels stretched on frames. The patchworks are composed of banners used in religious ceremonies, rice bags and hessian materials with printed calligraphy. The panels are assembled like a makeshift wall - a stage backdrop - along an L-shaped formation. Iconographic religio-aesthetic codes are cut and pasted within the panels and manipulated along the space. The title The Moneymaking Persian Calligraphy (Khat-e Poolsaz-e Parsi) appears as calligraphy across some of the panels split up and divided along the installation wall. It alludes to the commercially profitable status of calligraphy in the recent market trends in the Middle East.

The concept for my oil barrels is driven by a fascination with oil politics and the major role it plays in the world’s political balance.
I strongly believe that oil is one of the most important factors contributing to current conflicts in various regions of the world.
Painting on the surface of an oil barrel helps me to express the complexity and instability that exists in the Middle East. If one looks carefully at the imagery painted on the surface of these oil drums, one will find not only beautiful Middle Eastern patterns and designs, but also symbols of violence and conflict, such as bleeding bullet holes and headless animals. These aspects of my work seek to express the contradictory and complex role of oil in the world today.

Throughout her distinguished career spanning over five decades, Farideh Lashai has always juggled with varying means of expression, without recognising any frontiers that might confine her to a rigidly defined identity. While painting and visual arts are her main practices, lyricism is the reigning characteristic in her works, whether it is painting, sculpture, writing, installation or a combination of animation, sculpture and painting.
With the use of animation projection she divides the scene into temporal and spatial layers, they take various forms, imagined and real and spectacles are performed, humorous sarcastic stories are politicized, love stories, historical narratives unfold, then they fade away and the painting silent but charged remains. It is a way of discovering the meaning behind the background painting, a meaning that constantly changes, once abstract once representational, but nothing is represented, it is only the scene for performance of the theatrical.
The main concern in her works is the interplay between the real and the imagined, which is visible in this work in both its medium and subject. The material is solid stainless steel and flimsy, ephemeral video. The rabbit of her narrative sees its own reflection in a water well, then sees a moon and jumps

to catch the reflection of the moon. The moon twirls and spins and the rabbit gambols and bounds, at moments touching the moon, wrestling with it, at moments the moon slipping away. Once caught, the moon and the rabbit become one, one speeding sparkle like a shooting star, enlightening the root of a tree that twinkles upwards through all its branches. In a way the work is a reflection on Rumi’s poem, Hunting the Shadow.

But Farideh’s work is celebrating the fool. The fool is the rabbit, the artist that hunts the shadow, the dream, but a dream that affects and transforms reality and creates a reality of its own.

Taken from the news coverage of the fraudulent Iranian presidential elections in 2009, an image of two women emerging from the turbulence of a tear gas cloud creates a hazy backdrop for two businessmen shaking hands and congratulating each other on some unknown achievement. The image of the two men is cut in two sections, with the top segment being smaller than the bottom, which may indicate a sense of violence, incongruity or displacement. This palpable presence of violence carries through the painting with the depiction of a lion on the back of the man on the left. The image of the lion, taken from a nineteenth century Iranian lithograph, may be indicative of the savage nature of man or perhaps suggestive of the source of an omnipresent violent danger in this multilayer allegory. However despite all the references to violence, the presence of beauty and hope, as suggested by the three butterflies in the third layer of the painting, cannot be denied.

A few days following the eight years of conflict of the Iran-Iraq war (1980 – 1988), an unarmed Iranian man was lost in the desert and became a captive of Iraqi soldiers, unaware that the war had already ended. By chance alone, he became a “prisoner of war” and spent the next seven peaceful years in captivity. Action 104 by Reza Aramesh is a sculpture inspired by such accidental misfortunes of Everyman, across cultures and borders. The reality of captivity surrounds him; he is an avatar facing the limitations of our contemporary society and a nation facing the confinement of liberty. It is an image of a modern-day saint, both terrifying and reassuring. The Sacred Made Real exhibition at the National Gallery in London, which displayed Spanish 17th century sculptures of saints was a powerful experience for Aramesh. Action 104 is similarly hand-carved from limewood in a small traditional family workshop in Italy, using techniques that were used to create the sculptures which adorn the cathedrals of the European Renaissance and Baroque. It was then hand-painted (polychromed), and carefully varnished to imitate the sheen of a living human body. The expertly inserted glass eyes complete the illusion of realism. In contrast to hyperrealist representation, however, Aramesh offers us a heightened version of reality. The distinctive silvery flesh tones intensify this saint-like man’s almost impenetrable aura of piety and devotion. His ecstatic pose is closely based on Michelangelo’s Rebellious Slave, who, like the Saint Sebastian of Guido Reni, searches the heavens for strength and support in his time of trial. In both, the sinuous contrapposto expresses at once the writhing of a man in pain, but is artistically recalibrated to produce an
image of great poise and elegance. Aramesh’s elevation of anonymous young and misfortunate men to the status of modern-day saints forms part of a tradition stretching back to Caravaggio. The jeans and the boxer shorts of the young man in Action 104 carry unmistakeable references to the universality of modernity and popular culture, but they are frozen, in a way, in the careful and delicate manner in which they are carved and painted. In doing so, Aramesh shows the viewer the transcendence of so many moments captured in media imagery today, and which, by blending two distinct worlds, elevates both onto a plane of timelessness and contemporaneity. Aramesh depicts humanity as repositories of beauty, grace, and limitless potential, but bound and trapped by the limitations imposed by society. While the work of Jeff Koons was a celebration of banal physical rapture, Action 104 epitomises a brave new world of global uncertainty and conflict. The Postmodern was an image of a Western

society brimming with supreme confidence in its materialism. Today, teetering on the brink of global conflict, Action 104 is more relevant and illustrative of the anxiety in which we live.

The plinth of Action 104 is an indivisible part of the sculpture. It was designed by Aramesh, drawing inspiration from Islamic geometric designs. Like the opulent furniture bought for palaces, these designs were painstakingly inlaid by hand in precious wood veneers such as fumed eucalyptus and Indian ebony. The Islamic designs, though clearly discernible, are sharp and contemporary in contrast with the sculpture that the plinth supports. In traditional Islamic art, complex geometrical patterns are used to demonstrate the perfection and omnipotence of God. Aramesh thus brings together the two artistic traditions of Christian sculpture and Islamic pattern: he points to the basic humanistic message binding both monotheistic religions, while at the same time implying the dire effects that an extremist interpretation of both Islam and Christianity can have on the human soul. It is of no surprise, for Aramesh, that the period in which Spanish sculpture flourished was marked by inhuman Spanish oppression in Central and South America, executed in the name of Christianity.

Having studied Fine Art at the University of Tehran, Hashemi has had several solo shows in Tehran at spaces including Mah Art Gallery and Aaran Gallery. She has also exhibited in France with Iranian Spring (2004), an exhibition of six artists inspired by the art of Persian miniature painting and poetry selected by the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art; and in the US, a touring group show entitled Wishes and Dreams: Iran’s New Generation Emerges (2007). Wrap Me Up In you presents her second solo show in Dubai. Stories from The Boudoir, her previous exhibition with B21, explored scenes and moments from her past in meticulously painted compositions of millions of tiny lines. The works, like their emotive subject matter, seem to bristle before the viewer’s eyes. Reflections on her traditional family life, her upbringing and instances from her childhood are themes often found in her boldly personal art.

Banisadr once remarked that his childhood memories, notably of the Islamic revolution and the brutal Iran-Iraq war, were a mix of images, half abstract and the other half with recognisable forms. Present in all of his works, is a sense of sound and movement that is due to the way in which Banisadr condenses his imagery, and chooses a wide range of colours to bring his subject to life. His figures, inspired by Persian miniature, contrast with the use of large brushstrokes to create an increasingly abstract image. As you draw closer to the painting you see that he is not only capturing the brutality that he has experienced, but also showing human evil in general. Disguised beneath the magnificence of the paintings’ overall design – despair, isolation and terror are conveyed. Banisadr explains, “I became fascinated with all histories of war, conspiracies, colonialism, corruption, ancient and modern battles...Opposition and conflict are at the heart of my work.“

Carefully filmed abstract images of natural landscapes are selected and captured. These captured images are projected onto the canvas and painted in a precise, hyper-realistic manner. The result is a painted image in exact colour, composition and proportion to the captured film image. The video image which is about a 20 second looped clip is then projected back onto the canvas. Once the mirrored moving image is superimposed with the painted canvases the subtle movements of wind and water suddenly bring the flat surfaces alive and impart an element of real time onto an otherwise frozen moment.The physical result is unexpected. The viewer gets the distinct impression that these surfaces have been infused with poetry and life.

A life spent between Europe, America, and Iran has informed the formal and theoretical basis for Ave’s art. Prior to the Iranian Revolution, he worked as a stage and graphic designer at the Iran American Society in Tehran, was Resident designer for the National Theatre, Tehran, and was advisor to National Iranian Television and the Shiraz Arts Festival. Between 1974 and 1979 he was acting Artistic Director of the Zand Gallery in Tehran. After the Revolution, in the 1980s, Ave created his own alternate space, 13 Vanak Street, not functioning since June 2009. Ave’s work is represented in various collections in the US including that of his friend and mentor, the legendary painter Cy Twombly’s Foundation; as well as the Contemporary Art Museum, Tehran; the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Lloyds Bank, Geneva, and the British Museum, London.

To the same degree that our lives today have been disassociated from their surrounding environment (though involuntarily), they are directly influenced by it. These shots have captured the cruel moments of misery and fatigue, though are not expressive of a certain event in time or place. They explore the depths of the collective memory of a people who have for generations suffered silently and tolerated much torment. Atighetchi makes use of traditional Middle Eastern ornaments in his calligraphy to give more substance to his works; which are accompanied by gold leaf to further beautify his pieces. He applies calculated and traditional colors in his works; depending on whether he has chosen to emphasise or de-emphasise the viewer’s focus by lightening or darkening the letters. Atighetchi is one of just a handful of Middle Eastern calligraphy artists who can truly and fully master the balance between colours and proportions of the Arabic alphabet on a large scale. This has been a true obsession for Atighetchi leading to discovering new frontiers in art of Calligraphy hence the reason for the level of innovation in his works.His mostly spiritual paintings are executed on a white background to honor the traditional colour of paper, where all calligraphy began.

Salehi’s paintings construct a narrative of an emotional severance from people, places and time: a personal journey which is patched together using old letters, photos, digital imagery and hand drawings, and retold with passion and candor. His works are vivid in tone yet layered with vintage imagery. The viewer is placed as the protagonist of his narrative, and engaged in a dialogue with his characters.
He has been making films and video art since 1992. His video art films which are generally shot in Iran are both intense and dreamlike. They represent a temporal distortion of memory, and the process of creating a personal mythology. They each have a story to tell and in this sense are closer to narrative based films than conventional video art. Longing and reconciliation are common themes and are repeatedly invoked in his films.

Fakhim takes us to the inner world of the artist; a world full of complexity, fear, wonder, and observation. Fakhim’s sculptures begin with assemblages of readymade traditional terra cotta pots of various shapes and scales, which are used as the body. They are then decorated with fabrics, wigs, jazzy coloured high heel boots, and different accessories bought from public markets, second hand shops, and the bazaar. In her work, we also find strong ref-erences to pop culture and language that are prevalent in Iran.

Saffari attended primary and secondary school at Alborz College, Tehran. In 1950 he arrived in Lausanne at the Lemania School; one year later finding himself in Paris enrolling at the L’Ecole des Beaux-arts where he frequently visited the workshops of Souverbi and Andre L’hote. In 1953 he enrolled at “L’Ecole Speciale d’Architecture de Paris” where he obtained his diploma in architecture in 1958.
Saffari then returned to Tehran in 1959 where he worked as an architect and completed a diverse range of projects. He participated in the foundation of the faculty of decorative arts and created paintings and designs which were exhibited both individually and as part of collections.
In 1980, Saffari returned to France where he has lived since. In Paris he continues his activities and has completed further interior architecture projects; recently adding sculptures to his repertoire of works.

In 2002, Behnam founded “L’Ecole de Murat”, an art school in the charming medieval city of Murat, offering a variety of courses on art techniques, art history, as well as “L’académie des Couleurs” programme.

aFsOONWe all travel. Life is on the move. Places hurry by, as landscapes from the windows of fast-moving trains. Sometimes we trace our journeys on maps. What are we searching for and where are we going?
The Conference of the Birds is a masterpiece of the Persian Sufi poet Farid Al-din Attar (1142 - 1221). It tells the story of a large group of birds (human souls) which, under the leadership of a Hoopoe (spiritual master), undertake a long journey in search of the legendary Simorgh bird (divine truth, God or beloved). Many of the birds perish as they confront their own limitations and fears while journeying through seven valleys before they ultimately find the Simorgh in the form of their own reflections in the water. The last thirty survivors realise that what they were searching for was inside them all along.
We are all part of the beloved and the beloved is a part of us. As I continue my search for the past, for all that is lost and for impossible desires, I know that they are all within me and I need the mirror of truth to reflect them and free me. First I need to undertake the journey of finding the mirror, either from a moving train or in my heart.

A history of Assyrian reliefs to Apadana patterns, Ghaznavi palaces, Safavi mosques are paradoxical tales of beautiful kings, cruel beauties, faithful traitors, cowardly champions, prosperous prostitutes, traditional modernity, modern calcification; all in a context called Iran. The reflection of the steel sheet and its interference with the objective reality is like the integration of the past and the present. At this stage in my practice, I have tried to provide an opportunity for a vivid symbiosis and create an artificial appearance to some extent. The result is a refreshing and renewing of the past - not adoring or denouncing the history.

An extension of his Parergon series, these seemingly two-dimensional works, are Golkar’s latest exploration of object-hood, space and perception. Through the use of plexiglass cut-outs, which are in place of the frame’s actual glass, Golkar masks the space being framed by a custom-made frame. Once hit by the light, the cut-outs cast a shadow on the wall behind that lures the viewer in, only to find a void behind the frame. Similarly, the silhouette cut-outs of well-known architectural sites offer a glimpse into the monumentality of the ideological space and the void on the other side.

For centuries, the lion has protected our land under the favorable gaze of the sun, the Flag of Persia. In the past, Iranians regarded the lion as a symbol of manliness and leadership. They used to call their heroes and champions “The Lion Men”.In the old days, astronomers divided twelve pillars of the skies among seven rotating objects including the sun; and each one or two pillars belonged to one of the objects in the sky and was considered to be the home of that object. The pillar called Asad - the lion, was the home of the sun. My birth sign is lion.

The fundamental question underpinning the way I think about my artistic practice is how to face and respond to one’s activity in the world. I try to think about those questions and channel them into my work. I’m involved in an activity that hopes to unlock and provoke the cognitive faculty in my mind; or the viewers minds. The intention of my work is not to please the viewers aesthetically, but rather to invite them to participate in an open dialogue.This piece is part of a larger body of work which is currently in progress. The work focuses on an era; our era, which has been known as a post ideological condition, where people no longer seem to believe in ideological truth and where the fundamental and extreme practice of any ideology be it a ‘business ontology’(west) or a ‘political-religious ontology’(east) has frustrated us all over the globe. Our lifetime is spent in an environment clouded by that prospect and our children will face the same equally grizzly and more likely prospect. As an artist and cultural worker, I believe that it is my task to reflect on those issues by using art as my tool.

Esfandiary’s practice is an investigation into the diverse cultural, visual, and mystical experiences of her life. Her exposure to both eastern and western cultures started when she was very young due to the frequent relocation of her family. As the daughter of an Iranian diplomat, Esfandiary was privy to the cultural, political and religious realms of the many countries that she and her family travelled to and lived in throughout the Middle East and Europe. The experiences Esfandiary had while living within these different cultures initiated an internal dialogue around her personal identity and sparked a line of questioning as to which culture she belonged to. Realising that her personal identity lies between the interstices of the many cultures that she has inhabited, Esfandiary creates work that exists within both the eastern and western worlds. Her visual childhood memories of the patterns, symbols and vibrant colours of the eastern world have been interpreted and reconstructed using the western techniques and materials that she learned while studying art in France and the United States. Esfandiary’s paintings present the viewer with a dynamic history and a multitude of cultural appropriations and interpretations. Her paintings, which are saturated with colour and loaded with historical and contemporary references, offer a privileged view into her own personal negotiations between East and West.

Culture and language are the most valuable heritage of a country which colonialists have tried to make insignificant during the past centuries. The piece ‘Precious!’ represents the stage of gradual devaluation of a culture. In this art work, the plate represents a complex like a country and the words are symbols of culture, language, poetry and literature which are coming out of the plate and nothing may be filled in their place. Different scripts of the letters illustrate different periods which have been passed to a nation. More and more recently, people say that protecting our cultural heritage is a real concern; but they just pretend and it will be forgotten forever.

It took me a while to understand and realise the numerous possibilities and the flexibility that textiles and sewing could bring to my practice. There were some things I couldn’t achieve in oil painting that I can with textiles. My work process begins with my “études” or preparatory sketches, which represent the mental process of each work. However, sometimes the monoprint and the collage aspects of the work take control and become the dominant forces. I search for old fabrics, and I have my own treasure hunts in the traditional marketplaces as well as private homes. The weekend markets are where I find the best fabrics for my work. You can’t find the same patterns and character in new fabric as in old textiles. I’m not trying to make a sentimental issue out of the old textiles, but my lifelong experience with fabric has given me a different view of them. In my work, I attempt to create a concrete conceptual body formed with many layers to achieve what my inspiration guides me to do.Poetry inspires me. Often, in my mind, there is something meaningful going through a maturing process, and when I hear a word, poem or story, the language guides me unconsciously toward the inspiration that was maturing in my mind. My work starts from the moment I can reconstruct the inspiration for myself. My work is very similar to a writer’s work but with a different result. The major influence in my work comes from my immediate surroundings. These inspirational elements are often very simple things that I witnessed growing up, but they gave me a deeper sensibility toward my work. To develop this further and preserve it, I spend time every month taking photos of distant parts of my hometown and villages in Iran – this way, I don’t lose my contact with these elements.

In a family of artists, I began my journey into the world of art with calligraphy, creating portraits with words. I then realised that painting does for me what no other artistic medium can; it stops time in its tracks. Each of my paintings is a slice of my imagination in a single moment, yet they reveal all my secrets within that moment. I paint to place next to each other all these moments in time, which represent life, to engage in a dialogue with history and present a kind of dialectic.I begin each work with the complete absence of fear and total love for art. I use my hands to lay the paint on the surface. They are by far my favourite tools to work with as they remove one step in the transference of my imagination to the canvas. I work with speed, working and reworking the pant and thus, I find acrylic to be a suitable medium. My palette, though controlled, is an interplay of colour and consistency; I allow the colours to interact freely but within a controlled technique. Yellow ochre, though consistently present, appears in different hues and shades. I do not have a favourite colour but prefer combinations of colours. Burning silver is a word that comes to mind. Calligraphy in the form of loose scribbles is pushed to the edges and beneath the forms. Then, when nothing needs to be added or subtracted, the work is finally complete.My paintings are filled with riddles and mystery. They rip me out of my body and take me to a far away land and time where no one else has been and is only known to people through legend and myth. They are filled with tales and accounts which if in a book, would take days to read. But on my canvas, they immediately inform viewers of their secrets. When viewers are able to read and understand the forms, when they follow the story and reach the truth revealed in my work and when they are delivered a blow by its impact, then I have created my work successfully and feel like a sultan on earth.

The forgotten ones: they have not really escaped from anybody’s hearts. As people and events are forgotten it should be noted that what has been forgotten was at some stage in the hearts of people and as time went on has been forgotten.
If The forgotten ones are remembered, will they find their way back into the heart of people again? This is the temptation that makes people want to open up the long lost treasure chest and put their spoils on a blank canvas with the hopes of it re-entering people’s hearts. The forgotten ones are not always people, but events; moments of time and sometimes they are so real that you must give them space and time.
The forgotten ones are a fact that has turned into an incident and they have happened. Let us suppose that on occasion we’ve turned the story to their liking, turned grey skies into blue, turned dead trees into green trees and maybe even sometimes planted trees in their empty gardens and sometimes given them love and sometimes sorrow.
The forgotten ones…I know…They are like an old picture that has been brought back to life. The forgotten ones are true.

When I first started painting the images of the collection Esther’s Children by Houman Sarshar, I was thinking solely of the origins of Jews of Iran. At this point, I subconsciously added some faces to the photos, and took out some others; the reason for this is still not clear to me. The next stage was searching for myself in those paintings. Nevertheless, after the painting process was over, a feeling grew in me, which is more important to me than any other experience in this work; it was the connection that those people in those old images were making with me, and thinking that they could very well be my own ancestors.
I started seeing signs of their presence at home. Perhaps those signs had always existed, and I only noticed them after I did the paintings and experienced the feelings that followed them.

Ever since I can remember, I have been a traveller who was most attentive to shifts in landscape – the changes of energy, atmosphere, sounds and scents… curious of its forms, shades, pigments and ‘fruits’. I have repeatedly drawn mountains and many trees, painted waterfalls and hundreds of skies, made short videos; always trying to capture ‘something’ that seemed special to my senses. As an intimate extension of my life, my work generally bears witness to my connection, deep love and concern for Nature.
Some years ago, I became very ill and I had to switch from oil painting, my life-long practice, to other less ‘toxic’ media. I turned then to engraving, which has become a real passion and I started a botanical journal called “Golhaye Behboodi : Les Fleurs qui m’ont fait du Bien”. Once I felt comfortable and had even developped my own technique of etching, a rather elaborate and long process, I started another series much larger in size which I called “Baghe Hooriane Ferdows : In the Garden of the Hesperides”. The making of each edition stretches over a long period of time and the process feels like a ritual to me. As I was completing my “Cypress”, the first tree in this series, I remembered a dream I had many eon-years ago, in which I’d seen myself on Mount Ararat. I decided to recreate my dream in the form of an installation, to bring the various media I have been recently using into a coherent whole; “Baghe Hooriane Ferdows : In the Garden of the Hesperides” is to be integrated into the final installation. Most of the material utilized for this project had been quietly awaiting its final use and abode in my studio.
For the past thirty years, some basic themes have recurrently emerged in my work as an artist. I usually work in series, in order to unfold the various stages of my process. Once and again I also feel the need to present my work in form of an installation, because it allows me to create an environment where I may weave different levels of meaning and experience. Whether I address issues pertaining to the conceptual, the narrative or the sensory perceptual – I usually aim to translate some aspect of my relation to Nature and formulate its lyrical dimension … In fact, visual poetry is possibly what I would like people to experience when seeing my work.

I was 24 when I left Iran and settled in France. Being a foreigner created a certain distance from the new cultural landscape I found myself in. I had to re-invent everything because my experiences didn’t quite fit the new reality. It became necessary to sharpen my observational skills.My main creative tool became the instrument of my survival which helped me to develop a real consciousness whilst looking at things in general and improved my focusing powers. Over time painting became a means of grasping a universal reality.My themes, superficially speaking, vary in subject: scarecrows, self-portraits, people reflected in water, people lazing in hammocks, lying dogs, garlic bulbs, stilt-walkers,images of my father near the end of his life and diverse other portraits.All these subjects are, however, stamped with my desire to lighten the emotional load and tend towards a mood of peace. Each work is an ephemeral moment, the idea being tosuspend the flow of time in a direct and forthright composi-tion, thus allowing the most ordinary things to free themselves of their earthly ties and take their place in a harmonious and restful order.The canvas is at once the mirror of my perception and the interface between painter and viewer, who is invited to share my contemplative approach and, hopefully, see things from a different viewpoint.

7. Subject to the auctioneer’s discretion, the striking of the hammer marks the acceptance of the highest bid and the conclusion of a contract for sale between Magic of Persia and the Buyer. Following the sale, the Buyer must provide Magic of Persia with his or her name, permanent address and signature as well as credit card details.
8. All Lots can be paid in full on the night of the sale at the Payment Desk or within seven days of receipt of a sales invoice. A 10% deposit will be charged to your credit card if your bid is successful. The balance can be paid by bank transfer, cheque or credit card up to 31st March 2012, when storage will be charged.
